OpenSUSE Network :: WMQ And 1414 Unable To Bind To Port
Feb 16, 2010
I have a QMgr running on a SUSE 11.1 - I start my runmqlsr under qmgr control on 1414. After a few minutes the listener dies saying that it can't bind to port. I did a netstat -a and I see no service on 1414. I did an lsof | grep 1414 and found nothing. what am I missing here?

I'll explain this in one sentence: Is it possible to program a port-binding shellcode in which people across the Internet can connect to, without being thwarted by the router blocking their data because the port its bound to doesn't allow port-forwarding

In SuSE firewall0. I do have a openSuse 11.4 and multiple IP addresses on eth0 interface
I run (trying to/have to) multiple TOMCAT servers.
I am trying to have each tomcat instance listen to on separate IP address for example:
What i am trying to do is to redirect
a) tomcat 1 -
a) tomcat 2 -
And so on.
I know that it has to be possible.
I do have just eth0/
Is is it possible. Do I have to create "vittual interfaces"? eth0:1, .......... and do redirection ?
"Server" has got just single interface - just 1 ethernet calbe goes to that server. I am planning to have 10-15 tomcat's on that server (I have to unfortunatley) and each has to run on port 80
Is it possible to "grant" permissions to normal users to run app on port 80 - that would solve me lots of problems if impossible to redirect.
I tried to setcap 'cap_net_bind_service=+ep' /path/to/tomcat ...... but no luck

It seems, if more than one cable is connected, a random hardware port is chosen as eth0-eth2. If only one cable is connected the port that is connected is chosen as eth0-eth2. Any idea what's going wrong here?

I have to wonder how much testing Opensuse has done with yast-dns-server package. After adding zones to the dns server - the system loses the ability to perform name resolutions. I can copy a named.conf file from a system that does work, except everytime the system is restart the named.conf file is rewritten trashing the updates done and again rendering the system to perform name resolutions.
Anyone have suggestions on how to get yast-dns-server from interferring with the configuration file? I tried just uninstalling the package, but then bind doesn't even start up on boot up.

I am facing two issues with CUPS - 1. I have installed cups 1.3.9 over OpenSuse11 x86. Please check below -
cups:/usr/share/cups/banners # cups-config --version
1.3.9
cups:/usr/share/cups/banners # cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.27.7-9-pae (geeko@buildhost) (gcc version 4.3.2 [gcc-4_3-branch revision 141291] (SUSE Linux) ) #1 SMP 2008-12-04 18:10:04 +0100
I have added few printers over there and everything is working fine. I can also able to add - delete - modify any printers from "yast2 printer" command. I can also able to browse cups web interface via http://cups:631, but when I am going to manage the printers (start - stop - delete etc), none of the buttons are working in firefox5 not even in IE also. Older version of firefox is giving error as "This address uses a network port which is normally used for purposes other than Web browsing. Firefox has canceled the request for your protection." All other buttons are working properly.
2. LINUX - LINUX Printing - OK
LINUX - WINDOWS Printing - OK
WINDOWS - LINUX Printing - NOT OK
While giving printing from Windows machine (Printer attached on Linux), there is no problem to coonect the printers, but unable to print.

Is is possible, via iptables or something similar, to bind a service running on a specific port to a specific interface? My case: I use a VPN service for privacy. I would like to have all traffic except ftp and ssh to run over tun0. Ports 21 and 22 will need to be accessible to the outside world (eth0) while the VPN is running.

If I open a raw SCTP socket, am I able to bind to a specific port? (I only want to see SCTP packets from a particular IP address AND port.) Or, any raw SCTP socket, regardless of port binding , will get all SCTP packets received by the OS from that IP address? The port doesn't matter and is ignored.

I have just installed Debian 6.0.1 base install, for the use of a file server. I installed samba using apt-get and am using: smbd version 3.5.6
Here is my smb.conf file. Very basic, which by the way, seems OK according to the output of testparm.
Code:
[global]
log level = 3
workgroup = INERT
wins support = yes
[test]
[Code]....
I don't understand why smbd is not reportedly binding to IPv4 ports.

- I setup port forwarding of openssh :
connect 1: ssh -g -f -p 11111 -i /<path-to-private-key> user1@ip-server1 -L 22222:ip-server1:161
- Then I setup second connection
connect 2: ssh -g -f -p 11111 -i /<path-to-private-key> user1@ip-server1 -L 22223:ip-server1:3306
- Openssh waring to me "bind: address already in use"
- So I think port 22223 have had another program use,I use command:
ps aux | grep ssh /* find process id of second connection */
kill -9 <process-id-second-connection>
netstat -an | grep 22223 /*find which program use port 22223> */
- but I can't find anywhat
- Then I run again command :
connect 2: ssh -g -f -p 11111 -i /<path-to-private-key> user1@ip-server1 -L 22223:ip-server1:3306
- And I receive a error from OpenSSH :" bind: address already in use"

My configuration: CentOS in a VPS environment, I have 2 static IPs at my disposal.I'm having trouble setting up my nameservers. I've registered the nameservers with my registrar and supplied the GLUE records, however my registrar has not yet applied this information into the DNS zone, because my nameservers fail to generate a response on port 53.DNS check says the following about my nameserver address:Checking SOA records for domain. Domain server is not answering to UDP requests on port 53. Possible problems: A firewall is blocking port 53, server is down, server is not running software for handling dns requests. So the only two possibilities I see is that my port 53 is somehow blocked or not properly set to accept and send the correct traffic or that I've misconfigured BIND.

My understanding is SELinux adds type enforcement to standard Linux. This means that both the standard Linux and enhanced SELinux access controls must be satisfied to access an object. Which means that thing that is prevented to do in the normal standard Linux will be also prevented in the SELinux System? Does SELinux make it possible to run a non-root software to bind to a port < 1024? something that standard Linux won't allow? If not, what other suggestions do you have for allowing a program to run as non-root but able to bind to privileged ports? I know all about using the port re-direction such as ipchains, iptables.

I just upgraded from FC 13 to FC 14. I run an ssh server on a port in the 3000s (call it 3xxx, to protect the innocent). When I try to start sshd with the "Port 3xxx" option in sshd_conf, I get the following error in /var/log/secure
sshd[5104]: error: Bind to port 3xxx on 0.0.0.0 failed: Permission denied.
sshd[5104]: error: Bind to port 3xxx on : : failed: Permission denied.
I did not use to have this problem in FC 13. how I can give sshd the necessary permissions now?

openSUSE 11.3 question:
I have a PCI parallel port adapter (Syba SD-PEX-NM1P) that should "only" need to be told what ports and irq to use with parport_pc but, for the life of me, I can't make it happen. Using lspci -v, I can see it uses irq 19 (it that 19 or 0x19???) and ports 0xc800, 0xc400, 0xc000, 0xb800, 0xb400 (all 8 bit), and 0xb000 (16 bit). This is confirmed by the YaST2 hardware information tool.
Doing modprobe parport_pc io=0xb000 irq=0x19 should do something useful but I get no result at all. There is no /dev/lpt1 - a /dev/parport(n - where n is a digit) shows up on occasion but I can't figure out when it appears or why. cat foo >& /dev/parport(n) - where foo contains "hello world <FF>" doesn't do anything on the printer. Using the YaST2 printer tool, even the HP tool (the printer is an HP LJ-5P), is fruitless.

I'm running suse 11.1 which is configured as a router. Configured are two DSL connections with static IP's and one LAN connection (3 NIC's all together).
Problem: suse firewall will only port forward connections from one of the DSL connections and not the other.
Because I'm running two DSL connections is there something special I have to turn on/enable on the firewall?

I have a Suse 10.3 router with 4 network cards. 1 is to connect to the big network and thereby also the internet, 2 are for 'client' subnets and I want to use the last one as a DMZ. In this DMZ will be a web server which has to be accessible from the other 2 subnets and from the big network. I could do it with a few simple clicks in Yast firewall, but I have some issues with this firewall and there for I want to use it as minimal as possible, using Iptables.
So now I'm struggling a bit with Iptables. Basicly what I'm looking for is how to block all ports but 80 in this last subnet with iptables.

I have properly configured my router to open a port for Transmission and Vuze. The OpenSuSE firewall settings are somewhat confusing, however. How do I add a port specifically for the BT protocol? I know it's the firewall causing issues, because when I shut it down, my BT apps roar to life, and die with a whimper when I turn it back on. In Ubuntu, opening a port in the router is automatically configured in the firewall; that is apparently not the case with this distro.
So, when I go to Yast Firewall, I see "allowed services" under the tabs available. When I hit that tab, I see a dropdown menu that contains services such as NetBios Server and Samba Server. Am I choosing one of those available and adding a port to it? Am I adding a custom service via the Advanced settings, and if so, why isn't there a way to label the service so that it shows up under allowed services?
