Mounted second hard disk still report 0 bytes even when files are already deleted in rhel5 . I already checked the lost+found and trash . It only happen that disk space on deleted files cannot be recovered after the disk reach full capacity , but if it does not reach yet its full capacity , deleting files will recover the disk space . The format of the disk I have mounted is ext3 also have tried ntfs using fuse but the same problem , once allowed to reach 0 bytes I can no longer recover space with deleting files and had to reformat and restore the backup

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 10.4 [64bit] on a AMD dual core with 4gb of RAM. My Problem: I am mounting to a Windows share from my Ubuntu box and everything is working as expected however, when a file is added, deleted, or modified the Ubuntu File browser does not reflect that change until the next refresh. The Windows users with Explorer will reflect the change immediately and automatically.
Is there a way to make the Ubuntu File Browser respond like Explorer when mounting to a Windows share? I call this behavior "maintaining state".
so after searching and reading, and searching some more, im stuck. i cant seem to get a mounted thumb drive to give write access. first thing to know is that, im using a seagate dockstar with a primary thumb drive[sda1] booting debian and samba.
i guess you could say im still in the testing phase, just trying to make sure files can be shared, mounted and accessed by users. the problem is stated as the title. i have successfully shared a folder in sda1 with rw access, but i cant do the same for the second drive[sdb1].

I got the following task from my boss. I have to find out if there is some alternative tool for create reports from Squid except SARG. Now, we use SARG, but my boss told to me, that the main problem of SARG is, that SARG generate huge amount files, which cause problems during migration our servers. He told to me the following condition for change of current tool (SARG):
* standard package of Debian
* generate less amount of files, optimal is to save reports to the database
So I would like to ask you if you know about some tool (I can not find some by google)... and the best would be if you told to me some practical experiences.
I am used to Ubuntus simple sharing with samba. Just install it, reboot and then share the files.Then do I klick on network folder and see all the shared files on the computers in the network.
How do I install it so I only need to go into network folder and see the other computers shared files.Then, how do I share files?
I hope it's not so difficult and that I have to change i config-files.

Ok, this is a complicated one, and possibly not entirely a linux question, but here goes-
I have a Synology server, set to backup to an external USB disk. As I understand it this disk is formatted as ext3.
The server recently crashed, so I need to get the data off the USB disk.
Weird thing 1: if I used an ext3 reader for Windows, then I can only see directories on the USB disk, no files. Yet if I mount it back on the (now crashed, but still just about bootable) Synology, then I can see all the files just fine.
Since I can see the files on Synology I figure the Windows ext3 reader is faulty. So I copy all the files to a spanky new QNAP NAS. Telnetting into the NAS I can see everything is present and correct and all the data is there. Great!
Weird thing 2: If I try to access the data via a Samba share, I can't see any of the files. Only directories!
Weird thing 3: I tried to make it all completely open by chown to my user and the "everyone" group, and then chmod uga+rxw *. This made no difference.
Weird thing 4: If I select "show hidden operating system files" in Windows then all the files appear.
Are there some weird "extra" permissions that Synology are using? If so how can I get rid of them? Anybody have an idea what is going on?
My worst case is I'll have to boot the Synology back up and copy the files via that, but I'd like to know whats going on. Oh and black mark to Synology here for making a backup that is hard to use on anything but the original system.

I have recently installed Fedora F11 with a Samba server. The smb.conf seems fine but I cannot see any of the files in the share from a Windows machine. I am probably missing something unbelievably simple but driving me nuts!
I can see the machine and share from windows
When logged in as the user fred I can see all the files in Linux - most are owed by fred.

The other thing I find a bit odd is that

does not effect the way that the windows machine sees Samba. It appears that you need a full restart to get the changes to show properly.

I am trying to see share files on my windows machine to my linux machine. I would like an answer to how to fix the problem. This is where i am at i am using my own network to learn who to use nmap properly. I ping my whole network with nmap -sS -O. Then i used nmblookup -a which gave me the infromation i needed. Then i run smbclient -L computername -I ip address -N
This will not show me the windows os this only show me my laptop. What can i change for this to show me the other computer on this network. The port i am wanting is open. I'm trying to make my music directory, located on my Ubuntu box, available to all the windows clients (Windows 7, to be specific) located around the apartment. It seems to work fine, I can see and read from the shares from my windows box, but deleting files doesn't work, I just get a permission denied.I've tried being as lenient as I can in the smb.conf, as well as setting 777 on the affected files, nothing changes. I've read, from my various googling, that the octal file permissions aren't as important as the samba permissions. Okay fine, but how do I tell samba to ignore permissions and let everyone delete files? I've read that samba works with samba users, but again, I don't care about users, I just want a global share that anyone can connect to and read (and delete) files.
Here's my smb.conf file: http:[url]...As you can see, I've played around a bit with options, but I just can't seem to get anything to work.
My server info:
SUSE 11.3 , authenticated against LDAP, I am able to log in using LDAP credentials.
I did run smbpasswd -w password
After I configured the smb.conf file, I try to do this on the Terminal to make sure it will work in Windows machines but I got this error:

I used Samba to share some files. But when I try to share /home/username/download, it is not accessible by WindowsXP. But when I modified the dir to /opt/*. It is OK.

Now I want to backup some documents in ubuntu, but the harddisk is not visible, I can't see it, ok I think the term in Linux is that it is not mounted. Is there something else one should do ?

I seem to remember I could just use DHCP given addresses when sharing from Windows to Windows, and they'd keep sharing even when the IPs changed.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe file permissions on the folder are RW for user,group and world.(umask=0000) My main problem is with SELinux, I've tried to audit2allow and that seemed to work, all I had to do then was chcon the directory and files to type samba_share_t but the tool fails with Operation Not Supported. Am I to assume you simply cannot share files from a mounted ntfs drive under SELinux? Because I've just spent 2 hours trying and I've just about ready to just give up and just go back to windows when I need to share those folders. There's no way i can copy the folder contents to my Linux partition, far too big for that. Has anyone EVER been able to do this? Do I have to disable SELinux to do it?

I've been building my digital music collection for some time and used to house it on a local drive with no quality issues. A while back I built myself a file server using ubuntu and mdadm in a raid1 configuration to protect against potential drive failure. I link my iTunes library to the music files via a samba share and everything works great on the surface. I've started to notice that random songs are becoming corrupted with pops clicks and silent pauses. I'll even re-download an album and notice that it's corrupted a few weeks later. Now I'm at a loss to what is causing this issue; I ignored it at first but it seems to be getting worse and more widespread as time goes on.
Do you think this could be caused by mdadm? It reports that all is fine via 'cat /process/mdstat' but I wouldn't know where to look or what to look for if there were syncing issues. The other possibility is that I have iTunes set to keep my music folder organized for me, but I've never heard of it actually corrupting the files it shuffles around. The bottom line is that my library is getting crappier as time goes on and I cannot stand for that!
I'm trying to share some folders over the network, but the shared folders are not visible on another computer. This is through double clicking my computer from the Network list in Nautilus. However, I can access the share by typing the full address(<computer name>/<share name>) in "File > Connect to Server...".Since I can't type the address manually from my blu-ray drive, I need to get the shares to show on the network. What is wrong with my settings?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having some trouble with the user's home folders in Samba, ubuntu clients.I have a Samba server (Ubuntu Server 9.10)nd a bunch of windows clients and ubuntu clients too.On windows clients, each usercan see his home folder without problems, and the other shared folders too of course.The problem appears in ubuntu (i'm using gnome desktop with nautilus and the plugin for I enter Places->Network->Windowsetwork->DOMAIN->SERVER I only see the public shared folders, but no the samba user's home folder.I tryied connecting to samba through Places->Connect to Server and entering the username (for previous auth just in case) but nothing happens...
If, in nautilus I write smb://server/username, once it asked me for my user and password (but I told the popup to keep the password forever so now it doesnt ask me anymore :S), but it keeps not showing the folder under SERVER, the only way to access it is through smb://server/username directly. Even username@server does not work.Mi auth type in the Samba server is "user", and the auth config at my ubuntu client is also userJust in case.. when I type smbclient -L //SERVER -U username, it shows me the home folder ok.
i'm trying to set up samba so that i can connect to the printer in the den since we have wireless access. also, i can see my virtual box on the windows xp home ed desktop, but can't access it.so, how do i go about setting up samba so stuff is visible between my ubuntu machine and my families windows orientated network? i'm having a hard time finding anything on videos too. i'm taking a break from the remastersys stuff so i can get the more important things done, such as connecting my ubuntu machine to my families windows network. i don't know if the printer is wireless or not, but regardless, i can't find it.

On the Server PC, I have the printer working, I have set it to shared, and I have set the server setting to Publish shared printers. I can see and use the printer fine from a windows PC.
On my Ubuntu Client PC, I have samba installed, including smbclient, and all other samba components I can think of. I can see other computers on my home workgroup (Windows and Ubuntu fine). I can also add a printer connected to my windows PC. However I cannot find the printer connected to the other ubuntu PC.
I see the instruction in the Samba guide saying
"Now enter your Ubuntu Samba Print Server (set up as above) IP address in the box on the left titled "smb://"."
However I do not have fixed ip addresses, so what am I supposed to enter in the box. If I enter nothing I can browse the network and can see the host computer, but the printer is not displayed. I can also see the printer connected to the windows PC. How do I 'see' the Ubuntu printer?
I am attempting to share a folder from an existing drive that has been formatted in NTFS. I simply right click on the folder, goto share, and I can see the option to share to UNIX and that works with no problems. My question is; why is the SAMBA sharing dialog grayed out?

- Which application might have created them?
- Is it save to delete those ?

Im having trouble sharing a mounted iso in narty. i have mounty installed which is what i use to mount my iso's with and i attempted to share the folder it creates in my home folder over the network to a windows based machine with no luck.

On computer 1 I can see and use the shared folder of computer 2 just fine.
On computer 2 I can NOT see the shared folder of computer 1 anymore since recently. I has worked in the past.
Some more information: the name of computer 1 is "daniel", the share name is "gedeeld". So the address of the shared folder of computer 1 would be smb://daniel/gedeeld/
Opening this address in Nautilus works fine on computer 1 (that shares the folder), but results in an error on computer 2.
