OpenSuSE 11.3 (but this is not likely a distro specific issue)Kernel 2.6.34.7, but likely applies to a number of previousAm close to launching a more extensive webpage describing in detail why and how this configuration is important, but I'm missing up to date information on how to persist the config. By default, changing the TCP Congestion Control algorithm only modifies the current system session. Docs I've read recommend that the command resetting the algorithm be written to Code:/etc/rc.d/rc.dAm confused with all the different config files, but I suspect either an existing file should be modified or an additional file should be modified in

I want to change linux scheduling algorithm for some of my processes but when I click on processes in ksysguard and click renice project, all of the processes use normal level cpu scheduling. Why is it such a thing and there is no priority?

there are 3 nodes..A,B and C. Node A wants to send information to Node B but it does so by sending it to Node C first which then sends to B. And similarly Node B sends to A. In this simultaneously C doesn't send to both A and B. This is the in built algorithm..but i want to change it to: A and B send their packets to C and C sends both these packets to A and B..by ORing... In the receiver side...node A can receive the wanted packet and also B. Where do i change the algorithm?

I just added a 2 port network card to a system that is running Fedora 11, but it is INACTIVE. I open the Network Device Control to activate it but there is no network ports in Network Device Control. It is empty.It looks like the system recognize the card and loaded correct driver.

I'm trying to play with different control style at application settings-controlstyle, after change a little bit of settings, the desktop freeze nothing can click,so I goto control+alt+f2,hit control+alt +delete, after restart, It freeze again, so where it store the settings about that so I can change it to default control style from terminal only acess since dekstop freeze all the time?

Still a flawed KnetworkManager in the released 11.3.No user control for cabled 10/100 lan ports. Yast config for the eth0 says it can have usercontrol by networkmanager. Oh no it doesn't.It seems to cater for wi-fi users only who get a "enable wireless" tickbox and "manage connections". At least you can stop and start it.Meanwhile cable users who might have a taskbar display for lan traffic can see stuff pouring in, or out and if it's something they don't want they can't do anything about it unless they pull the plug.

I read that passwd -S spits out informationabout a user's password including the encryption algorithm used to encrypt the password in /etc/shadow. I ran the command but nothing about the algorithm is returned. Is this a quirk in openSUSE?On another note, I've determined through other means that I've selected blowfishryption as evidenced by the $2blah$2blahblah format of the /etc/shadow entry. However, if I look at /etc/default/passwd it lists CRYPT=md5. If I'm using blowfish why would that variable be set to md5. onversely, if it is set to md5 why is the blowfish algorithm being invoked?

Since a while,the energy-saver shuts down the screeago,it happens after half an hour,but I didn�t set it up in that orders !It makes menervous,short time away from the comp,and soon the screen is dark!And the screensaver will not appear any more,too.I tried to enlarge the times in the energy-manager,created a new profile,switched off the laptopmode-service,nothing helps!And it seems,if there is no possibility to set one of the profiles up,they can only be changed,deleted or newly created.Is there really no place to force it to the required settings?Under the good old KDE3.5,it was no problem,to get it work like I want it to.My 64-bit system runs under openSUSE 11.3 and KDE 4.4.Is here any salvation for my nerves

I have my box setup as a router/NAT with two different network cards. One for external connection(connected to the Cable Modem) one for internal connection(used for internal DHCP). It works perfectly when I manually activate the two interfaces after booting(both interfaces always show up as inactive after booting), then the DHCP server and firewall. I am confused, however, by which program has control of these interfaces.
First, there is the Network Configuration (System->Administration->Network), which is where I manually start the interfaces after rebooting. Both interfaces are set to "Activate when computer starts" in here.
Second, Network Device control(System->Administration->Network Device Control), which looks to be almost the same thing as the above.
Third, the NetworkManager applet(on the top bar) - both devices show up as unmanaged when I left click on this, but if I set "Controlled by Network Manager" in the "Network configuration" window(number one above), It still does not work. Can I get rid of two of these programs, or is there some way to edit the startup scripts to start my ethernet cards before the dhcp server/firewall(which is shorewall BTW)?

openSUSE 10.3 is firewall with multiple public IPs, on one external interface..In protected zone is server with multiple LAN IPs, binded to different instances of Lotus Domino servers (irrelevant), and incoming connections are routed according to destination IP of incoming package to different LAN IPs(FW_FORWARD_MASQ set with "destination ip" parameter).I would get something like SNAT instead MASQUERADING for packages that are traveling from internal servers to Internet.

How do you change the hostname in SLES11? I have normally used the /etc/hostname file and rebooted the server in other distros. I only notice the way to change it is in yast2 -> network devices -> network settings -> Hostnames. I am looking for where it is stored because I want to write a script to update it (apart of a server deployment process).

I have configured Network Manager with another eth0 entry for openDNS. This works ok if I switch to that configuration, but if I reboot, it reverts back to the normal settings.

I'm having a wireless issue (go figure) where I can't get to the internet, can get to my LAN just fine, but trying to ping anywhere on the net just gives me "network unavailable" message.One thing I've seen noted here time and again is people saying "Use Yast vs Network manager" when I go through the Yast Network Devices GUI it tells me it's using network manager, and I need to use ifup (if I want to use Yast), however I have no clue how to go about changing it from one to the other?
Currently I'm using hard-link to get all the updates and see if that will resolve my problems, but figured I'd learn how I'm supposed to switch it for the future.

I'm trying to setup a cups printing server, but I want the default admin to not be root. Google has given me a couple hints and the cups administration page a little further but I'm now stuck at the end.What I want is a user called admin who belongs to the group printadmin as cups server administrator.What I have done1) I have created a local user called admin user yast user interface , and a group called printadmin. I installed openSUSE on my notebook with an usb drive using openSUSE 11.4 KDE LIVE iso. The installation process set the name to "linux-ygrl" which I don't really like. (I probably just missed the setting during the installation.). I tried to change it through YaST -> Network -> Hostnames and I set everything where needed to the new name and restarted but the changed weren't applied. I searched the web and found out about the /etc/HOSTNAME file which still contains "linux-ygrl". Now I could change it manually but I was wondering if there is a GUI for it? (I mean, openSUSE has for alsmost everything a GUI.

I use a reverse SSH tunnel to log into my university machine from home. In order to do so, i start the java client that let me have ssh access to my university machine (since is behind a nat), then start the ssh -R command. However the java client is defective and brings my firefox to 99% cpu and ram leak, If I close the java client, i also lose the ssh -R tunnel and the connection. I tried to give disown, but again when the TTy is closed i also lose the tunnel. Is there any way to make it persistent? at least for an hour once i have closed the java client?

Right click on the "K". Choose Menu Editor.Save changes. However, after that,some changes persist, other changes do not and, additionally, some unexpected folders magically appear on the menu (such as "Office-1, Office-2, etc.). Some folders I created never show on the right place (the main menu) but instead tend to persist on a different submenu (such as "Graphics"). If I move them out to the place I want, they immediatly show back in the wrong place. Regular KDE manuals I've seen do not mention this issue or how to go about fixing it (they just tell you to delete an item when you want to delete it, to save the configuration after you are done, etc). Maybe I should switch to Fluxbox immediately. I use Linux mostly for production and research, and all I expect from a GUI is to let me get things done.
