I just recently setup a OpenSUSE 11.3 server with Xrdp which I got from the 11.1 tutorial. Everything had been working great until yesterday I let the system run a update and now whenever I try to login I get login failed. When I look in xrdp-sesman.log file it says X server died. I've searched around for this problem and it seems there is some talk about it from a few years back but nothing as of recent and nothing that has worked so far. I'm kinda at a loss with this and really would like to get it up and running again.

While connecting over Xrdp, hitting the "D" key alone hides all my windows and shows the desktop. This is problematic since I often wish to type words containing at least one "D" in it. In case anyone else is having this problem, I've wrestled through it and offer this help.I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meercat and connecting via Xrdp. I only have this problem when connecting remotely.
APPARENT CAUSEI don't pretend to know for sure, but the problem appears to be that the remote connection is flubbing Metacity's "<Super>d" binding for the "show desktop" command. More precisely, the string "<Super>" doesn't appear to be functioning for me. If I change <Super> to <Ctrl>, I can use Ctrl + D to show desktop, and I can then type the letter D without it hiding every window from me.
Further evidence <Super> isn't working for me, if I change Metacity's "panel_run_dialog" global key binding from "<Alt>F2" to "<Super>F2" I bring up the run dialog by hitting F2 alone.
WORKAROUNDChange the system's "show desktop" keystroke. Here are the steps.
1) Alt+F2
2) gconf-editor
3) /->app->metacity->global_keybindings
4) Change the assigned keystroke for show_desktop from "<Super>d" to "<Ctrl>d" or "<Ctrl><Alt>d" or "disabled"
If someone finds this worthy of submitting a bug ticket, please let me know so I can follow it.
I am trying to enable rdp server on my ubuntu machine. I installed xrdp using apt-get, but when I try to connect (setting protocol to sesman-X11rdp) it authenticates, but dies with the error "only supporting 8 and 16 bpp rdp connections".

I have found this link "Login Failed" message when logging in through RDP
I am suffering from exactly these symptoms. Can anyone suggest what the likely cause is? How would that bug/solution relate to my environment: openSUSE 11.3/xrdp 0.4.1-85.1?
And lastly, how can I find out if the update implied under "Additional Information" has happened?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using HP Mini 1000 Series with Ubuntu 10.10 (later installed with xubuntu-desktop). I want to run a wine application which requires 800x600 resolution. However, my current resolution is 1024x576. The other available solution is 640x480. Previously, I used pre-installed Windows XP, it allows me to change the resolution to 800x600 by clicking the "List All Modes" button at the display setting, then I can choose the 800x600 resolution. So, I think HP Mini is also able to support 800x600 screen resolution. May I know how can I do it in Ubuntu?

View 1 Replies View RelatedIt has been about a month since I installed openSUSE 11.3 (64bit, Gnome), and overall it is better than 11.2, but I have had some stability issues that I did not have with 11.2.
1. openSUSE 11.3 crashes very often when I change desktop background. I haven't experiment with it but it happens with downloaded images.
2. Changing monitor environment makes openSUSE to freeze. Fresh boot with external monitors connected usually works, but plugging & unplugging monitors usually makes openSUSE freezing. (I have to force power down)
3. Suspend makes openSUSE freeze a lot. Usually one suspension works, if I re-suspend it, it usually freezes.
I was wondering if these are common with 11.3 or I'm the only one who is having this.
I know this is kind of stupid, but is there any way that I can change the color of the top of the desktop cube??
When I booted up from the Live CD before, the tops of the cube were green with a little chameleon. Now, their just cream colored...
I would like to change to the Gnome desktop is this possible and if so how?

I rebooted and can now set the resolution to 1680x1050 which is my max. However, when I go to test these new settings the resolution shown in the window is 1400x1050. View 9 Replies View RelatedContinuing with my 11.3 install on an old Toshiba Tecra M1 laptop:
When i was installing, i had the options of 1600x1200, 1280x1024, 1024x768 etc.
I chose the 1024x768, because it fit the laptop screen perfectly.
But after the installation, the highest resolution i get is 800x600, and it's wasting a bunch of real estate on the screen.
I mean, if during installation it could do 1024x768, why not after the install? obviously the graphics card supported it.
