Fedora Hardware :: AWE64 ISA Card \ Wasn't Recognised At Boot Up?
Jan 26, 2010
I'm running FC 12, on a Pentium III PC. This has a 440BX motherboard with an AWE64 Gold ISA card. It wasn't recognised at boot up, I've installed the GUI ALSA mixer, inisitally it shows no sound device.Searching around the forums stumbled across the command:modprobe snd-sbaweThis one line command worked fine (no errors), enabled the volume control, and ALSA mixer GUI gave loads of nice sliders. Pushing these up I found that basic sound was working fine (eg playing Flash video within Firefox). I don't need any other features of the AWE64 right now (might like MIDI port one day).
However, each time I reboot the system it forgets, and I have to run the comand again (and tweak up the volume in the mixer, particularly for PCM).I tried adding a file called awe64 in /etc/init.d, with the contents:
#!/bin/bash
#modprobe snd-abawe
(and chmod +x awe64) but this doesn't seem to get run, or has no effect.I tried adding a file to /etc/modprobe.d but this just gave errors - I think this is the right approach though. What should I do please?

I am using debian on kernel 2.6.38-2-amd64 with Kde 4 and I have one sound card integrated on my mother board (Asus A8N32-Sli Deluxe) with Nvidia CK804.
Often when I start debian I get a message that sound card wasn't found, therefore from the Konsole I have to reload the as:
xxxx@debian:~$ sudo alsa reload
Unloading ALSA sound driver modules: snd-intel8x0 snd-ac97-codec snd-mpu401 snd-gina20 snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-mpu401-uart snd-pcm snd-seq-midi snd-seq-midi-event snd-rawmidi snd-seq snd-timer snd-seq-device snd-page-alloc.

i have installed openSUSE 11.2 on a dell dimension 2400. My Ethernet card wasn't working, so i am using a wireless interface, but it doesn't work either. It worked on a dell dimension 4400, but when it gets to the activate network my system freezes. Should i re-install my system, or should i post this under the hardware category.

I've recently put Ubuntu 11.04 onto an unused server with the plan of converting it into just a standard desktop PC, however it was lacking some of the basic components. After a struggle I managed to get an old Nvidia graphics card to work nicely and I bought a ?2 USB sound card from ebay and I've had no luck whatsoever in even getting it recognised. When plugged into windows the information given about the device is 'Generic USB Audio'I've restarted after each time I've tried to fix the issue and I've been mucking around a bit with ALSA following instructions from every forum post I could find but with no success

I have just set up a server with Ubuntu Server edition 10.04. I installed it by plugging the harddrive into my main pc as the server doesn't have a cd drive. Now the drive is back in the server and the internet won't work. I have run lspci and lshw and neither show a lan or network card anywhere. ifconfig comes up with nothing related to eth0, and says the 'inet addr' is 127.0.0.1. My motherboard has an onboard Realtek 8101L LAN controller. Can't seem to find much with a google search

I've just put together a Centos 5.2 system using an old Future Domain SCSI card which would allow me to hook up an external DAT drive. On its BIOS screen it advertises itself as an AHA-2920 which should be handled by the aic7xxx module. However, the module doesn't even get loaded unless I force it in /etc/rc.modules and even then it doesn't pick up the card.

I have just tried to upgrade my Toshiba Laptop (Satelite X205-S9800) from Fedora 10, which was working correctly, to Fedora 12. During the first boot Fedora 12 does not recognise my Wireless LAN Card and stops (Freezes) in that part of the first boot sequence. I have tried switching the LAN OFF in the Bios and also switching it off(There is an On/Off switch on the Wirless LAN card. Neither of those actions fixed the problem.

With any download that i start (whether ftp/http/bittorrent/etc..) I get download speeds of no more than about 100 KiB/s...which is decent, but I usually I know my internet speed is max at about 600 KiB/s. If I go to Network Mananger (while a download is in progress), and click on my wireless network, it will disconnect, then reconnect, and I'll get download speeds of up around 600 KiB/s for a period of about 20-30seconds...then, I'm back down to the 50 KiB/s - 100 KiB/s.
Fedora can download at max speed for a little bit, but then goes down to about 100KiB/s for the rest of time (until I disconnect and reconnect again). Why does this happen, and how can I get my speed to stay at maximum potential? Also, Fedora 10 recognized my wireless network card when i had installed F10. But I'm worried that the best driver wasn't used for it. I've found my actual driver that I used on windows vista/xp, and installed that via ndiswrapper, but i don't think that ndiswrapper disabled my old driver... am i right about this? Maybe a solution to my problem would be to disable the driver that came preinstalled on F10, so it can use my newly installed one instead?

I'm reasonably noob to Linux but now seriously confused Installing F11 onto a Dell Precision 490, 4GB RAM and 250GB WD2500YS. I get through to drive partitioning and there is no drive listed. Especially odd as the drive is running F10 quite happily. Reconnect a Seagate Barracuda 500GB and restart, this is seen and is the only drive listed even though it is SATA1 not SATA0. Boot the F10 installation DVD and that recognises both drives! I have tried both AHCI and ATA modes with the same results. Can anyone point me in the right direction or do I go out and get another Seagate drive, no I can't use the existing one.

I have a HPL2045W LCD monitor connected to my Fedora 14 PC through a Belkin KVM switch. On Fedora 12, the screen resolution (upto 1680x1050) was correctly recognised, but in Fedora 14, the best I can get is 1024x768. How do I correct this obvious error? My graphics card is an ATI Radeon RV2600 which has worked flawlessly for several years, until this version of Fedora.

I am running Fedora 13 with a motherboard that doesn't have onboard graphics, so I had to put a PCIE card in to do the install.
However, I am using the box as a file server so I don't need graphics, and would like to be able to use the PCIE card for another computer.
So I took the card out and powered on, waited about 3 minutes and then typed in the login details. I then tried to SSH into it from another computer and couldn't connect, so it must not have booted up properly (I tried a few times to make sure).
I have read about a similar problem that occurs on Fedora 9 when there is no monitor attached - this is apparently solved by adding "nomodeset" to the grub entry, but that didn't work.
There is no X or Gnome/KDE installed and the default runlevel is 3.
PS - also, usually when the power button is pressed there is a pause before it powers off, but without a graphics card the power button turns it off immediately no matter how long you have waited.

I've been a distro-hopper for a while and just installed FC14. I like it and it seems very stable on my older Presario laptop (2170us with 1-Gig Memory and 80-gig HDD).In other distros, I was able to open a Terminal, type "su" & <password> then type "gedit" and take care of things like the Workgroup name in Samba, adding a user to sudoers, etc.....but in FC14's Terminal, typing "su" & <password> and then "gedit" results in all kinds of error messages (that I can't recall right now). I did find after typing "su" & <password>, that if I then typed "sudo gedit", gedit opens just fine.I had tried to type "sudo gedit" (before trying "su") but was told I wasn't in sudoers.I suppose it's minor for someone like me who can eventually find a way around it...but why won't gedit open when I'm a superuser by just typing "gedit"?

Driver: snd_hda_intel.

Before I upgraded to Squeeze, I was using a USB Soundcard. With help of forums I did some manual tweaking to force system to use this card, instead of my default snd-hda-intel card, because it wasn't supported. However, this was a long time ago and I can't find what I did. Now, my on-board sound card worked perfectly on Debian 6.0 live DVD, but the installed system is silent. Any ideas how could I trace the problem?

So I have Suse 11.2 installed to dual boot on a Macbook Pro. Everything is finally working right after a lot of re-installs to get it too where the Suse installation wasn't disappearing after reboot, everything except for the wireless. Suse is seeing my connection and to my knowledge, I have all encryption and SSID entered correctly, but I cannot get a connection.

I have a file server that has a raid array with a jfs file system attached. Whenever there is a power cut (quite frequently in our house), and the server is not shutdown cleanly, then the raid array is not automatically mounted since ubuntu doesn't know if the journal is clean. I have to then manually run fsck and remount the partition by hand which is a bit annoying. Basically, does anybody know if fsck can be setto run if a non-clean shutdown has been detected, or failing that, on every boot?

10.04, clean installs, running Gnome or LXDE.
IF
- a logged-on user wasn't properly logged off
- the system is restarted
- the same user attempts to log in
[Code].....
This seems repeatable, and happened on 2 different PCs.
When logged into Gnome as another user and trying to sudo a backup of the borked user's home before attempting a repair, a ".gvfs" file is reported "in use" and can't be copied.
It happened to me quite a few times, due to crash or more often power failure, or my sudo-errors. I now keep a few spare virgin sudo-enabled cloned accounts just in case one dies that way.

I had just upgraded when after the first reboot I noticed that the black Ubuntu screen (with the little red/white dots) is actually white and buggy. It's unreadable and looks trashed.
After the first login, the desktop wasn't able to load properly, leaving me with a blinking, unresponsive icons and no menubars.
The only way to use the desktop environment is to choose Ubuntu Classic (both with and without effects) and Ubuntu Safe Mode.
I do have nvidia drivers installed (173).

i recently started sockets programming. In the process i began to look for relevant network information about my computer and realized that ifconfig wasn't displaying the same information that resides in my /etc/network/interfaces file. On the interfaces file my IP address is 192.168.1.109 for interface eth0 but ifconfig displays 192.168.1.101. I was under the impression that ifconfig got its information from the interfaces file but clearly doesn't. I tried re configuring the device with ifconfig and then disabling and re enabling the device with ifdown and ifup so that the device updated its information but it didn't.

I have an EeePC 4g netbook which only has a 4Gb hard drive and I thought I would like to install Fedora 13 on an 8 Gb SDHC card and use it to boot the netbook.
As neither the netbook nor I have an optical drive, I made a bootable USB memory stick using Unetbootin which boots the netbook and could be used like a live CD to install Fedora.
On booting with the live USB stick, with the blank SD card in place, and clicking on the install icon, the installation starts but then there are 2 problems; the first is that the installer appears to want to install to both the SD card and also the USB stick. There is a tick in the box beside the USB stick which I can't remove.
I decided to ignore that and put a tick in the box beside the SD card but when it got to the point where it creates partitions it said "Could not find enough free space for automatic partitioning. Please use another partitioning method"
Surely 8 GB is more than enough space for partitioning, so where am I going wrong and why does it want to install on the USB stick as well?

Just installed Fedora 14 from the Live CD i686 on my Dell Inspiron 1521. I can't connect to the SpeedTouch 585 on either wireless broadcom card or the wired Ethernet card.
I can connect to it from the same Laptop on the Vista which is on dual boot on the same laptop.
Further confusing is that I ran Fedora 14 and connected to another SpeedTouch today.
Already checked the Channel on the wireless nic and it's on the same one as the SpeedTouch.

usb devices inserted after bootup aren't being automounted and opened. For the life of me, after much googling, I can't get them to work. the ehci_hcd, uhci_hcd and ohci_hcd modules are not loaded, but those were from some old posts, and I don't know how relevant they are to me.But if I insert the usb before startup, ubuntu now recognises and automounts any usb device.before the recent kernel update ( **.2 my wifi dongle would be recognised. but after,it seems as it too isn't being recognised.for the meantime, I am keeping a small unused usb device plugged in the back of the tower.
