OpenSUSE Network :: DHCLIENT_SET_DEFAULT_ROUTE Appears To Be Ignored
Dec 23, 2010
I have two network interfaces in my opensuse 11.3 system and want to control the interface which is used as default route. Somehow, it always picks the first card no matter what. In particular, I have tried setting DHCLIENT_PRIMARY_DEVICE to 'yes' resp. 'no' in both ifcfg-* files in /etc/sysconfig/network. Also, I have tried DHCLIENT_SET_DEFAULT_ROUTE but that also appears to be ignored. I remember having used this in the past with previous opensuse versions but it no longer seems to work. What is the correct way for doing this?

I'm a bit puzzled by new "keyring everywhere" feature, well the case: Now I'm using 11.3 brand new suse and just when I want to connect to INTERNET via my DSL connection, a keyring password window appears, well I fill in the keyring password and hit enter, then another window pops out with my DSL connection asking me to enter a password for my DSL connection (but I've already set it up it before) and ok, I enter my password hit enter, but DSL window pops out again! and nothing happens,
I do it several times like a puppet, then I delete my DSL connection and make it again, so everything works with passwords no(no keyring is being promted). SO what do I do wrong? How can I disable this keyring feature, I do not need it at all, why do I need to recreate my connection every single time?

I am trying to work out if the network manager (the icon in the top right) can be enabled for all users logged on, not just the first.
Sometimes my router drops the connection and it is nescesary to click OK to the password re-entry prompt, however if I have logged on, then someone else is using the system and this happens, I need to log back on, press OK, log back out then let them log back in again.
Can't the network icon be enabled for all users?

I recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically. Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.

I'm having problems connecting to our network time capsule the capsule appears in my network places and I can open it up but there are no files present. However when on my house mates Mac there are many different file types present. At first I thought it may be a formatting problem but the files can be accessed from a windows machine also.

I've restarted a server a couple times, and during the boot process pings respond when it brings up eth0, but then when i get to the command line login screen, the pings die. once i log in and do a ./network start the pings respond again, so i'm guessing its dying or not set to start automatically maybe? What should I check?

I'm having some problems with my wireless connection. I'm on Ubuntu 10.04, on a HP ProBook 4520s, with a RaLink RT3090 wireless network card. I installed the drivers (hopefully correctly), the wireless seems to work correctly, it scans and finds networks, but when I try to connect to one, it times out after some time, while still attempting to connect. I also have a wired connection that works correctly and without problems. Other computers that try to connect to said wireless network manage to do so without any problems, so this has left me a bit baffled, since, like I said, everything seems to be in order.
I'm a new Ubuntu user, so please tell me what other information I need to provide in order to easily and successfully facilitate troubleshooting this, because it is, as you can imagine, quite aggravating, having a laptop that needs to be connected to the internet through a cable.

Opensuse 11.4 gnome/fglrx/compiz Something strange happens when I launch yast2, the controlpanel appears invisible. Meaning that if I ramdomly click around the desktop, the relevant yast modules will start. But I cannot see the controlpanel at all, alt-tab does nothing to remove it, it just stays on top of everything.

Desktop goes blank after boot, then re-appears when shutdown. How do I fix? I turn on computer, it starts fine with the usual green boot screen, the little bar progresses then the screen goes blank. Then when I go to turn off (push power button), the desktop re-appears. What can i do to fix? I need my desktop back (I haven't made any changes to my system since last boot, and I have turned off, pulled cables out, put them in etc...it must be a software issue) I'm using OpenSuse 11.1 Gnome 32 bit

I am attempting to make an application that requires a variety of libraries associated with OpenGL. So far I have managed to find most of them in the devel packages (Mesa, freeglut) that come with the standard distribution. However, I cannot find libglui, though it appears to be standard in some other distributions.

After I boot up into 11.4, the desktop/icons appear but then there is a delay of about 20 - 30 seconds before the bottom-right task bar items appear. During that time, I can't start any applications. This happens on both desktop PC's, very frustrating and not present with 11.3.

I recently installed opensuse 11.4 having come from 11.1 and when I started configuring VNC it appears that tightvnc is installed by default. I enabled remote administration and open firewall ports in YAST and found that the tightvnc viewer connects to my server ok. I do have a couple problems though;1. the password I set up when manually launching vncserver for the first time is not requested.2. When I launch a viewer connection it appears that an existing session is not being connected to since I log in as a user through the typical suse login screen and when I exit the session, all terminals and apps launched during that session are ended. On my 11.1 installation, after exiting a session all work was persistent and not ended.

I recently installed Fedora 10 and I'm trying to install a driver for my HP Deskjet F4200 Series All in One printer. I downloaded the proper hplip file and when i go to install it in the terminal it gets to the very end where it is trying to install the missing required dependencies. When it checks for the network connection it comes back saying "error: The network appears to be unreachable. Installation cannot complete without access to error: distribution repositories. Please check the network and try again."I am connected to the internet through hardwire cable (also tried it through wifi) and have no trouble accessing internet through mozilla or downloading packages elsewhere. Any ideas on why my terminal won't recognize my internet connection??

I've just installed openSUSE 11.3 on a workstation in my office and am having trouble with the font in the terminal window. It appears very blocky and some of the letters run into each other, regardless of font chosen. Here is a pic of the issue: Has anyone any ideas as to what is going wrong? I've gone through the 'Preferences' on the terminal window but nothing I change helps.

I'm curious as to whether anyone else has experienced this, and has an explanation. I'm running Kile 2.0.85 under openSUSE 11.3 32-bit on a Lenovo X61. Twice in the past couple of days I've had the bizarre experience that, upon a sudden burst of typing my text has appeared in Kile in reverse order.
no ngis fo ecnacifingis eht fo redaer eht dnimer esaelp ,dniw cihportsoeG a htiw snoitalumis eht gnicudortni erehw ,Note the perfect reversal (I rarely type that accurately in forward mode). A day later it happened again: )1.3.5( noitceS fo hpargarap dnoces eht ni ,niaga ecnO.I've been using Kile for almost a year now, on two different machines and under several versions of openSUSE. Nothing remotely like this has happened before. I don't think I have a virus. I can't think of any event that may have heralded this mystical behaviour. Cheers, jdw

I can't log into my normal user account anymore, though I can log in with root without any problem. When I enter my normal user name and password, the screen blinks, a black page appears and after a couple of seconds I get the login screen again. I deleted /tmp files but no changes. I tried to login using command mode. So I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log into root in command mode, then ran init3, then switched user to my normal user and ran startx. It worked and I logged into my normal account, but I can not do this process every time. So, what is the problem? How can I solve this problem? I used to work with my normal user flawlessly. I installed a bunch of software and also copied some folders to my home directory, but I don't know whether these activities caused the problem or not. I'm using KDE4 under openSUSE 11.2.

I just tried installing OpenSUSE 11.1 onto my Playstation 3. I installed the otheros.bld fine (which I downloaded via a link provided on the OpenSUSE website). I then inserted my 32-bit Gnome CD for installation and restarted my system. Then on startup, a blue/grey screen appears. Here are the links to the screenshot (sorry for poor quality):
[Full Screen]

[Bottom Half]

As you can see, the only option is for me to select the gameboot, which obviously takes me back to the Playstation XMB. There are keys at the bottom of the screen, but this is only to change the resolution. So I have no option to install the OS.
Does anybody know why this screen appears and have any ideas on how I can get around this problem to install SUSE onto my Playstation?

I'm new to networks and servers, been using Linux on the desktop for a while now but always relied on the company's IT guy for setting up everyting LAN-based.
Now I want to build up my home LAN, and want to do it with Linux. I've managed to set up LAMP and file share servers.
What I am looking for is information on what I need, and how to set up a server for the following tasks:Centralized Username and Password, that when the user logs into any one of the desktops in the LAN, it uses this for authentication
Something that allows this authentication to be utilized in other servers (file access, web access, router logging, etc.). Something to make it easier for continuing permissions from one service to another. e.g. I have IPCop filtering content, and it has provisions for tracking who is making which request if there is authentication going on. (optionally) to run a script for mounting Samba shares or mapped network drives so from one system to the next. For example, in whatever box somebody logs in, it mounts a server share ("smb://Myserver/users/<username>") to a local folder ("my_user_share").
So;user "fred" ="smb://Myserver/users/fred" and user "wilma" = "smb://Myserver/users/wilma" but both would find their respective one mounted under "~/my_user_share". This would be irrespective of which box they are loggin in with. If the server share location changes (new server/servername), I change it on the server so the next time they log in it points to the right place.
I guess it is similar to Window's Active Directory, though I'm not sure what it's called, how to configure it and what it is and is not capable of doing.
