OpenSUSE Network :: Unable To Mount The NFS Entries?

Aug 1, 2010

been searching google and forums for about 5 hours now, and can't figure this one out, I have a server running opensuse 11.2 sharing various NFS directories, I have one laptop that is running 11.2 and I have no problem getting my NFS shares from the server.On my other laptop that is running 11.3, I had the shares working at one point, but changed things around and added a new HD to the server, now I can NOT get this thing to work, I have tried everything I could find to read on it. Started and stopped the NFS server and exportfs -a, and checked /var/logs/messages on server and nothing about this laptop (192.168.0.102 suse 11.3) trying to connect.On this laptop, I have deleted all the shares, and tried to re-add them but still get this error everytime.on server /etc/export:

/home/kryptic/ *(rw,no_subtree_check,sync)
/backup/Media/ *(rw,no_subtree_check,sync)
/backup/Dales_Backup/ *(fsid=0,crossmnt,ro,root_squash,sync,no_subtree_check)

OpenSUSE Network :: Network Login Starter - Set Up A Server - Centralized Username And Password

Jan 21, 2010

I'm new to networks and servers, been using Linux on the desktop for a while now but always relied on the company's IT guy for setting up everyting LAN-based.

Now I want to build up my home LAN, and want to do it with Linux. I've managed to set up LAMP and file share servers.

What I am looking for is information on what I need, and how to set up a server for the following tasks:Centralized Username and Password, that when the user logs into any one of the desktops in the LAN, it uses this for authentication

Something that allows this authentication to be utilized in other servers (file access, web access, router logging, etc.). Something to make it easier for continuing permissions from one service to another. e.g. I have IPCop filtering content, and it has provisions for tracking who is making which request if there is authentication going on. (optionally) to run a script for mounting Samba shares or mapped network drives so from one system to the next. For example, in whatever box somebody logs in, it mounts a server share ("smb://Myserver/users/<username>") to a local folder ("my_user_share").

So;user "fred" ="smb://Myserver/users/fred" and user "wilma" = "smb://Myserver/users/wilma" but both would find their respective one mounted under "~/my_user_share". This would be irrespective of which box they are loggin in with. If the server share location changes (new server/servername), I change it on the server so the next time they log in it points to the right place.

I guess it is similar to Window's Active Directory, though I'm not sure what it's called, how to configure it and what it is and is not capable of doing.

Server :: Many Entries In DHCPD Lease File

May 10, 2011

I've a question about how work dhcpd. I'm on CentOS 5.6. I has a dhcpd server on it. His configuration:

authoritative;
ddns-update-style none;
deny declines;
deny bootp;

option domain-name "mydomain.domain";
option domain-name-servers IP;
option routers IP;
option time-offset -18000;
#option ntp-servers IP;

subnet IP netmask MASK {
range IP START IP END ;
default-lease-time 86400;
max-lease-time 172800; }

And now in the /var/lib/dhcpd/dhcpd.lease file, there few entrie for the same IP. Sometime I've ten same entries for the same IP. Can I have only one entrie by IP? Is there any problems in my configuration of my dhcpd.conf file?

OpenSUSE Network :: Server Description On The Network?

Jun 8, 2010

When I installed OpenSUSE 11.1 on my server, at some point, I gave the server a description. Whenever I connect to any of the shares on the server, this description appears. For example, on one Windows workstation, there is a share which appears in Windows Explorer as "Midwest on 'Cincinnati Corporate ISS Server (ISS0042)' (T:)".

For the life of me, I cannot find where this description, "Cincinnati Corporate ISS Server", is stored. I've search through /etc, and poked around ad nauseum in YAST, but I am missing it. Where is this description stored? What is the YAST function to change it?

How do you count the traffic on the interface, friends ?

I have a router for a medium-size LAN. HTTP-traffic goes through the transparent proxy, logs are parsed with Sarg, so that's the way I look how much megabytes my users 'do' daily.

Now I want to get rid of proxy, just to do sNAT. But I still want to know the daily traffic of my users (even in general, not for each user).

The router is run by Slackware 12.2.

I can then take that information and use it with the following string to strip off the lead characters so as to make the 3 in $substr either a variable or redirect to multiple occurrences of raw based on the count returned.

sub raw {
$substr = substr ($_, 3);
$raw1 = substr ($substr, 0, -4);
$raw = lc($raw1);

Server :: Adding LDAP People Entries That Are Not Users

Jan 22, 2010

I currently have an LDAP database on my Suse 10.2 server for managing authentication and controlling emails for my Cyrus email server. I use this setup to provide email functionality to my web and email hosting clients, as well as DNS functionality, and it uses the default LDAP database that was setup when OpenLDAP was initially configured. Email support is working wonderfully, I might add. I also tested and verified the use of an email lookup directory in two different email clients (Outlook and Evolution) so that I can tell one of my clients how to lookup the email address of users who are setup in the LDAP server, and it works beautifully.

However, I'd also like to be able to allow my clients to build a shared contact database that can also be used in their email clients so that they can share them among all of their users. Ideally, I would need to be able to allow each client to have their own database of shared contacts, and I assume this would be done by creating a new LDAP database for each client company (i.e. group of users) that can contain the list of shared contacts for any of that client's users. When they configure their email client directory settings, they would enter the base path to their database in order to retrieve their shared contact database entries.

In my web searches, I've found plenty of CRM solutions on the web that claim to provide this type of functionality, but I believe that OpenLDAP contains everything I need to make this work without adding another layer of software to the server solution. (I subscribe to the "Keep it Simple, Stupid!" approach whenever possible.) Essentially, I need to have People entries in a client's LDAP database that are NOT email users on the system. The fields in the standard people schema are all the fields they would need - as long as I can figure out how best to add these non-user entries in the LDAP database. Are there any potential difficulties in creating additional LDAP databases expressly for this purpose?

Are there any tricks to adding contact entries into a client's LDAP database without them also being current email users on the server, so that those entries can be retrieved through an Email Client directory lookup? I will also want to provide an easy method for my client users to add new entries to their LDAP contact database, most likely through a web interface for them that could then issue LDAP commands on the server based on the input fields for the new contact. (I don't believe this is possible from within the email client itself.) Is there any reason this could not be done with the proper configuration? What should I be aware of as I setup this contact management web interface? Is there a better way for non-technical client users to manage this list of shared contacts?

Programming :: Counting Variables In Bash Script

Nov 13, 2010

If I read in variables entered by the user, how can I check to make sure the correct number of variables were entered? For example, after reading in a data file and making it into an array, I have:echo "To check the data, enter the first element number, last element number and step size as x y z:"read x y z.It then goes on to start a loop, but what I would like now (before the loop) is a check to see if three variables have been entered, before the rest of the script continues.

I've tried specifying the variables as $1, $2 and $3, but if I echo $#, the value comes out as zero, so it's obviously not working.

OpenSUSE Install :: Using Cd ~/ Results In / And // Entries For All Directories

May 5, 2011

Since I updated from 11.2 to 11.4 an annoying bug seems to have crept into the shell.

If I type the following and hit tab I get:

cd ~/.kde
.kde/ .kde// .kde4/ .kde4//

i.e. each directory has a / and // version for some reason. I have to enter a / and hit tab again to proceed.

If however I type the following and hit tab I get:

cd /home/tux/.kde
.kde/ .kde4/

i.e. correct as expected.

The ls command does not do this.

This seems like a bug.

Server :: Adding Entries Directly In Password Shadow File

The thing is after the server is installed and run for the first time, three users have to be created for the various services to run properly. I want this to be automated. To achieve this what is was thinking is automatically enter the user entries in the /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files through init scripts when the server starts for the first time after the installation. I tried creating user and assigning password in one of my machine, and the /etc/passwd and the /etc/shadow entries of this user I copied it into the other machine and tried login in on the other machine and everything worked fine.
