Aug 1, 2010been searching google and forums for about 5 hours now, and can't figure this one out, I have a server running opensuse 11.2 sharing various NFS directories, I have one laptop that is running 11.2 and I have no problem getting my NFS shares from the server.On my other laptop that is running 11.3, I had the shares working at one point, but changed things around and added a new HD to the server, now I can NOT get this thing to work, I have tried everything I could find to read on it. Started and stopped the NFS server and exportfs -a, and checked /var/logs/messages on server and nothing about this laptop (192.168.0.102 suse 11.3) trying to connect.On this laptop, I have deleted all the shares, and tried to re-add them but still get this error everytime.on server /etc/export:
/home/kryptic/ *(rw,no_subtree_check,sync)
/backup/Media/ *(rw,no_subtree_check,sync)

Jul 29, 2011After installing 11.4 my fstab entries for CD and DVD drives as well as floppy generate errors when I try to mount them automatically or via Nautilus when inserting CD or DVD. The icons and CD/DVD name show up ok but will not mount. Manually mounting via terminal command works. Here are the relevant lines from fstab

In /dev scd0 and scd1 are symlinks pointing to sr0 and sr1 respectively. The above error message was generated after attempting to load a CD in scd0 i.e. my laptop internal CD/DVD drive. Lines 10,11 and 12 are the fstab lines quoted above.

Nov 25, 2010I am trying to mount a directory from my server onto my wireless laptop. The directory mounts successfully if I am already logged into the laptop with another account first but if I log on initially with the user who requires the mount the mount fails. I suspect the mount is taking place before my network connection is up, is it possible therefore, to delay the mount in fstab until the network is fully connected?

Jan 2, 2010I have a Thecus NAS with nfs support running. Now I switched from OpenSUSE 10 to 11.2 on the client side and aren't able to mount my nfs shares. With SuSe 10.0 I didn't have any problems.
The /etc/exports:
/raid/home_nas1 192.168.0.24/31(rw,no_root_squash,sync,anonuid=99,anongid=99,no_subtree_check)
/raid/soundandmore 192.168.0.24/31(rw,no_root_squash,sync,anonuid=99,anongid=99,no_subtree_check)
On the client side I'm able to see the shares:
showmount -e nas1
Export list for nas1:
/raid/home_nas1 192.168.0.24/31
/raid/soundandmore 192.168.0.24/31
The client address:
inet addr:192.168.0.27
I'm using nfs-3:
mount -t nfs nas1:/raid/soundandmore/mnt

Jul 15, 2010I decided to implement quota on /home file system, but unfortunately I had not separate partition of /home file system. So I made entries in fstab at root (/) partition as follow:-
Label=/ / ext3 defaults,usrquota, usrgroup 1 1
and reboot the system, but my system could not give me login screen and after a longtime giving many "read only files" error ends up at following error message:-
"I could not start the X server (your graphical environment) due to some internal error. Please contact your system administrator or check your syslog to diagnose. In the meantime this display will be disabled. Please restart gdm when the problem is corrected."
I also got single user mode and try to remove changes whatever i had made recently but it gives me read only fstab file.
Ubuntu :: USB Device Entries In Fstab In 10.10?
Dec 11, 2010I have UUID entries for USB devices in fstab in my Ubuntu 10.10. I assume this is because I have upgraded my Ubuntu's since 8.04. Each time I boot, I get a message saying it cannot mount the devices even though they are present. I have to skip mounting in order to complete the boot process. I also have two filesystems mounted at Root ( /). See later post in this thread.can I safely remove these entries from fstab and have Ubuntu automount the devices? If I do so, will this get rid of the messages at boot time?

Dec 13, 2010I'd like to manage a nfs-mount via etc/fstab. The simplest solution (or lets say, I forgot _netdev) went wrong - but in bash I could mount - showing the entry in the fstab is fine. (nfsvers=3, soft). So I added _netdev. I expected from the system, that mount would be called twice in the init scripts: The first without those _netdev (s) and after bringing up the network then mounting all _netdev (s). But it seems, it is not working this way. Is anyone here, who can explain the (may OpenSUSE special) behaviour? I found in [URL] the information that _netdev is especially for nfs - so should work, shouldn't it?

Fedora :: Sshfs Entries In /etc/fstab Prevent Booting
Jun 3, 2011I added an sshfs entry fto /etc/fstab in a fresh FC15 build ona laptop and this seems to work
sshfs#user@server:/opt/apache-tomcat-7.0.2/webapps/ /mnt/server/opt/apache-tomcat-7.0.2/webapps/ fuse uid=500,gid=500,allow_other 0 0
I can mount and umount /mnt/server/opt/apache-tomcat-7.0.2/webapps/ without problems.
But after a reboot the systme it hangs when loading, I can't copy paste the messages but it said something about boot dependencies, and it was apparent the error was loading fstab. I had to Ctrl D or enter root password to get a recovery system, after commenting out the sshfs line (and some nfs lines too) from /etc/fstab after another reboot I was in.
sshfs used to be permitted in /etc/fstab it seems , I've not used it before, could this be a FC15 issue? I have seen other threads about FC15 and nfs boot issues presumably to do with the new booting mechanism.

Jan 14, 2011I have a Windows partition encrypted with TrueCrypt. If I start TrueCrypt (or RealCrypt) I can mount the partition through the GUI. before I encrypted the partition I used to auto-mount it at boot using fstab and it would appear in my places bar in the file managers. Is it possible to auto-mount truecrypt partitions from fstab?

Jul 22, 2010I've recently switched over to gnome desktop environment with gnome-shell preview as my compositing manager.Everything is good except for this process xfce4-notifyd which autostarts somehow..
The problem with this process is it acts as the default notification daemon over-riding gnome-shell's built-in notification support and tends to display balloon popups on the top right corner....If i kill this process everything is good.... But on restart it autostarts again somehow..I looked through the items in gnome-session-properties and also in these places:

/etc/xdg/autostart
But couldn't find any entries related to xfce4-notifyd.

Apr 15, 2010I use wicd at my laptop, since networkmanager didn't work well for me.(unable to connect..) However wicd is not connected before fstab probes my nfs shares during boot, so I wold like either to delay the fstab mount command or make sure that the mount command is performed just after that the wireless connection to my home network is up and running. Running mount -a in terminal works well, but I prefer not to run manual commands at every boot. Opensuse 11.2, KDE 4.3

I have two external USB drives, that I need to mount at boot. I have been using /etc/fstab up until now, with the following entries:

However, as I gather from doing searches is quite common, occasionally I get an error during boot (causing the system to drop to a recovery shell) because the USB drives take time to wake up and the system hasn't found them by the time it reads /etc/fstab.
From doing searches, it seems there is nothing you can do to fstab to fix this, so you need to mount them using an rc.local script instead, using:

The problem is, as I have two USB drives, their /dev/sdxx location changes between boots. I thus want to use UUID codes as I do in fstab, however I haven't found anything about this.
Does anyone know how I can use the mount command and UUID to mount a drive in rc.local and what options I have to use the mount the drive with the same options that I am using in my fstab entry? Obvisouly, I can't refer back to fstab using the mount command, because then I will still get the boot error issue if they are listed in fstab. And there is no space internally for the USB drives as there is already two internal drives.

Feb 10, 2010I am trying to setup fstab to automatically mount my NTFS partitions. I have used various Mount managers to create the entries in fstab. The fstab seems fine, but when mounting at boot or even via Nautilus I get the error message that I do not have permission to mount the disk.
1) Can this permission be set in the fstab file? If so what is the syntax of the fstab entry?
2) If not, is there a tool i.e. GUI to set the mount permissions?

May 24, 2011I just made a fresh install of OpenSUSE 11.4-Tumbleweed and have the latest updates. However fstab lines I've used in the past are not working.
Here's an example of two:

Mar 16, 2010Since OpenSuse 11.2 doesn't reconnect samba shares upon a resume from suspend, I wrote a small, ugly script to do so. It's placed in /etc/pm/sleep.d/66samba-remount

The 15 seconds sleep time is useful to me to postpone the remount after WiFi is back online. Perhaps there are way more elegant ways to do so (check for x times if WiFi is on, for example), but I'm no good at bash, and this serves me well. How do I file a wishlist for 11.3? If someone puts a samba share in fstab, I'd assume he wants it connected mostly everytime (at startup for sure... so why not over a standby?) I hope 11.3 just reconnects in-fstab samba shares in a polished way, out of the box.

I've already change my fstab file to add a network drive to be mount on startup localize in /mnt/freebox/. This is also working great. The issue is during the startup, utorrent starts before fstab and thus the network drive is unmount.
In my utorrent init.d daemon script, I ask for $Network starts in first time: Code: Required-Start: $network Is there any possibilities to order the startup and ask to fstab to start before uTorrent Daemon?

Apr 29, 2010I've tried to get an opensuse box I have to share a directory via NFS. I've failed each time, but I thought that the third time, I'd enlist some help from the forums, if I could. how do I know that the nfs server and not the client is the problem? Short answer is: I don't! That's why nfs (and many netwrk problems) are laborious, you're troubleshooting needs to take place at both source and desitination. Next question, what do I have set up so far? Well, I did download the nfs server kernel stuff (two months back) and /etc/init.d/nfsserver start seems to get set up OK. No errors and the daemons nfsd, idmapd, mountd area all running. So, I *think* that part is OK. I have the share set up properly in /etc/exportfs and have "exportfs -r" it.
OK, now onto the trickier stuff: the client and iptables. On the client pinging to the nfserver box is perfect, and I have rpcbind running. the reported error is "mount.nfs: mount system call failed" though from experience nfs errors don't mean a whole lot.However, I will go off and check now and see if I need a mountd running on client-side too.Then there's iptables .... ouch, that could be a long and painful trek. I don't see any specific ports being blocked, and it's the iptables that the default v11.2 opensuse came with. I did turn them off and the problem was the same, so whether wishfl thinking or not, I'm hoping it's not an iptables issue.

When I'm in firefox, I like to save pages alot onto my external but I constantly have to remount because my user has no write permissions for the drive. Sep 3, 2010I have a router that supports NAS; that is, you can plug a USB drive directly into the router, and it becomes a Windows share. I can manually mount the NAS share and use it properly. But, I would like to have it automatically mount on startup. The main reason for this is to assign it a proper mount point so that I can access it from the command line, since I'm having trouble doing that after I mount it manually.
To mount it manually, I go to Places > Connect to Server, select the "Windows Share" service type, and enter "//192.168.1.1/USB_Storage" as the server name. The server name is supposed to be "//readyshare/USB_Storage," but that does not work, so I used the IP address.
I would like to mount this drive at /mnt/readyshare. So, I followed (I thought) the instruction in this document. I created the directory /mnt/readyshare I assigned myself a samba password with smbpsswd I created a group "readyshare" with the GID 1010 I created a .smbcredentials file in my home directory I modified my /etc/fstab file.The .smbcredentials file reads:

The line I added to my /etc/fstab is:
