OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Configure Suse To Send Audio To A Receiver In Some Cases?
Sep 10, 2010
I'm been struggling to find a way to configure suse to send audio to a receiver in some cases. Details: - Did a fresh install - Using an old SoundBlaster card (which worked in my previous version of openSuse) - I do have digital out, but only for Amarok (start menu -> configure desktop -> multimedia -> prefer "SB Live! Platinum [CT4760P], Multichannel Capture/PT Playback (IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output") and Kaffeine (.kde4/share/apps/kaffeine/xine-config -> set "audio.output.speaker_arrangement:Pass Through").
- I have analog sound on firefox and "test volume" on Administrator Settings -> Sound, but just can't find a way to configure those to digital passthrough (tried to copy "audio.output.speaker_arrangement:Pass Through" to .config/kde.org/Phonon-Xine.xine.conf but didn't work)
[Code]...

In order to create S.T.A.R.T. copy and past the text in the following code section into your favorite text editor and save it into your home area bin folder as the file start (~/bin/start).

I have a Dell Inspirion 5150. The onboard sound card was blown 3 years ago. OS is Ubuntu 8.10. I am also a HAM radio operator and use the computer for digital modes using a USB device that acts as an external sound card modem for me.
The program that I use for that is fldigi. The device is Signalink USB by Tigertronics. the device has the ability to have speakers plugged in to it. Question: Is there a way to have the computer send the audio out the USB cable to the device?
I have looked at my sound settings and there are USB devices but none of them are the one(s) that I use with my Signalink device. If it can't be done, no worries -- have not really needed it so far. Just something nice to have.

Say I have 2 speakers connected to 2 different sound cards. Under Windows, is it possible to have some sort of virtual device that would forward an audio stream to both sound cards? If this can't be easily done under Windows, a solution for Linux is also fine. lternatively, if the 2 speakers are connected to different channels of a sound card, is there any vendor-independent way to duplicate audio to both channels?

I'm thinking of installing openSUSE-11.1 Gnome on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 7400M laptop because the wireless in Gnome is much more user friendly than KDE3/KDE4 in openSUSE-11.1. The idea is to give this laptop to my 84-year old mother and things need to 'just work' for her (she currently has a desktop running openSUSE-11.1 KDE3 that uses a WIRED interface to the web).
I refuse to update this laptop to openSUSE-11.2 nor 11.3 (nor other recent distributions) because every kernel update after the 2.6.27 kernel has broken the Intel i855GM graphics drivers for that laptop. There are many bug reports and none have fixed the problem for this Fujitsu-Siemens implementation of the i855GM graphics.
Hence I am looking at Gnome.
I booted the laptop to a Gnome openSUSE-11.1 liveCD and wireless is easy and works great. But audio is very very VERY bad. It is incredibly user unfriendly and it does NOT work well. I assume that is because pulse audio in openSUSE-11.1 was very immature.
I note these updated packages in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository:
Code:
So my question is, did the updates to pulse audio (in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository) fix the pulse audio situation? Are there ANY helpful views on this?
Currently my wife is using this laptop with KDE-4.4.4 (and openSUSE-11.1) so I can't just install Gnome and play with it without taking the laptop away from her for a while (note the hard drive is too small for a dual boot of KDE/Gnome).

to start off, i'll post the specs of the machine:
dell inspiron e1505
3.2 gb ram
1.86 ghz intel core duo
ati x1400 gfx
opensuse 11.4 kde 32 bit.
okay, here are the details: can't play any audio with amarok when desktop effects are enabled because the minute a window is moved, it will distort the audio. even when disabling desktop effects, some applications still cause this. can't play videos videos even with desktop effects disabled because of the same reason.
i just switched from ubuntu and when i ran version 11.04, i had to disable kms to do anything. i tried on opensuse 11.4 and the audio was flawless but the gfx went all to hell.

I've searched a lot across the web and this forum in particular, but wasn't able to find the solution. The settings of the firewall are too cryptic to me. When the firewall is turned off everything is OK, but it is uncomfortable to turn it on and off every time I watch IPTV.

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) on a five year old desktop computer with no problems what-so-ever until that is when i try to use aMSN. The aMSN program is great and problems only arise when i try to configure the audio and webcam. When i open up Preferences -> Edit audio and video settings and try to configure the audio and webcam everything just freezes solid and the only way i can un-freeze the computer is to disconnect the plug from the power connection.
On other occasions when i have again attempted to configure the audio and webcam the whole aMSN program just vanishes off the screen altogether? I have a Logitech QuickCam 8.1.1

For X-Mas I got myself a nice little nettop running off an ION motherboard. how to enable HDMI audio output, but got it to work. I've realized that when I'm in XBMC (which is admittedly the only place I watch movies) certain sounds like gunshots will be extremely louder than something like dialog. My friend believes that I should mess around with the channels (to fake the center channel from the left and right) I don't want to threaten Linux, how lightweight I can make it which is critical to an HTPC, but considering XBMC just got a Netflix addon

has anyone running the Igor USB Receiver under Ubuntu 9.10? Ive made an minimal Ubuntu 9.10 installation and after install and configuring LIRC with the Igor Ceskos USB Receiver the system holds by loading the modules. By trying a reconfiguration, the system says, that LIRC is defect. If I try the load the needed modules by hand, there is no problem to load lirc_dev, but I get the same system hold by loading lirc_igorplugusb. Are there any known problems with lirc_igorplugusb and Ubuntu 9.10?

In our factory, we used to use a bell system to signal breaks. Well they died. I figured it would be easy to replace those bells with speakers which ran into an Ubuntu box. I would just schedule some cron jobs to play a sound file to signal breaks.
However, I'm not talking about desktop speakers, and here's where the problem is. I only need two speakers. Do I need to run them both into a receiver/amplifier of some kind? Then run that into the back of the PC sound card? The actual speaker setup is where I'm new at. What would be the best way to get 2 (maybe more in future) LOUD speakers, separated by a few hundred feet, to the back of a computer that would control the ringing?

I have recently obtained a HTPC which has Mythbuntu pre-installed and already working with a remote it came with. I have another remote that I have changed over to (including the ir receiver) as it had easier button layout. Setup seems to have gone fine, but when the pc is restarted (turned of and on) then the ir receiver is not reloaded in the usb port. This was not a problem with the old remote. If once the pc is on I unplug and re-plug the ir receiver then it loads and works fine.
Running a lsusb in terminal shows that it is definitely not loaded on restart but is when re-plugged in.

im about 3 weeks into linux, started out with fedora actually, but switched to ubuntu. First days of linux was intense but slowly got the hang of it and i enjoy it way better than my previous op vista.
Sound System Setup-
Sony Receiver 3 speakers and 1 subwoofer
From receiver Y connector -(red plug and white plug R/L) to audio plug that goes into laptop output. Laptop- AsusTek g51x with
PHP Code:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC663 Analog [ALC663 Analog] Subdevices: 0/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC663 Digital [ALC663 Digital] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
PHP Code:
alsactl version 1.0.22
Sound card has Headphone, output, and input holes.
OS- Ubuntu 10.04
The setup worked fine on vista, but on ubuntu whenever i plug in headphones (headphone output) the laptops internal speakers shut off and there is no sound on the headphones, and when i plug in the sony receiver audio plug to my sound card output hole, the laptops speakers are still playing but no sound in the sony receiver. Also when i open the Ubuntu sound manager (I think its either pulseaudio or ASLA, stock gnome one) , it says on the Output tab, "Choose a device for sound output", but there is only one option and it says
"Internal audio analog stereo".
Im literally extremely lost at this point, i have read the forums for help, ASLA wiki (only shows USB sound device support) messed with the Sound Preferences, and spend around 9 hours in the last 2 days trying to make this work.

I'm trying to diagnose a weird problem ... maybe someone has an idea where to start. I'm having a problem with flash videos. The video part displays as if the fast-forward button is being held down; audio sounds correct.
I'm thinking "synchronization error" (duh!) but I'm not sure how to start to diagnose the issue. I'm running OpenSUSE 11.4 x64, and the problem shows up in both chrome and opera.

I have a puny netbook (deimos) and a more powerful desktop machine (phobos). Sometimes I want to watch a video file on deimos; but it's so puny, the video won't play properly, lagging behind the audio or skipping frames.
A solution I have hit on is to use ssh -X, to use phobos's more powerful guts to send the video over to deimos. This works, except for one annoying problem: the video is coming over just fine, but the audio is played on phobos's loudspeakers, not on deimos's speakers.

I have a laptop that I want to connect to my stereo via USB, and I want the other computers on my network to be able to send sound to it somewhat transparently. By "transparently" I mean that I want to be able to send literally any audio that would go through my local speakers to the stereo via the network. As far as I know, PulseAudio can do this without rebuilding any multimedia packages. No one really has anything good to say about PulseAudio, though.
As of now I'm ready to wipe the laptop (Pentium 4) and put pretty much anything (*nix) on it. I know PulseAudio is pretty easy to get running on *buntu, so I might end up doing that. I just want to be able to turn on the laptop and connect the stereo (in any order) and without doing anything else, have it ready to go on the network. Of course, I'm willing to put in some work to get it running. I prefer Slackware and FreeBSD, but the machine will literally just be there to send sound to the stereo.
Someone on forums.freebsd.org suggested NAS as a solution to a similar problem; however, I can't find anything useful regarding how to configure it, troubleshoot it, etc. I've only found random threads on the web by people who know how to use it or by people who can't find any resources for it.
Anyway, I'll be busy setting up PulseAudio to see how that works out. I can always wipe the laptop later, and I have a Kubuntu boot on my main laptop that I don't really care about.

I just setup a SuSE 11.3/64 server and I am trying to setup pptpd for a vpn. I noticed thatg the ppp0 (or any pppx) interface is non-exoisting and I think that that is the problem why my gre packages are not being sent by pptpd (as I have checked all other options). I have tcp port 1723, and protocol port 47 (gre) open on the firewall (SuSEfirewall2). I have traced the responses using tcpdump and only when the server sends gre to the remote client, the client never receives it (the 1723 connection is established). I checked the old server (SuSE 10.2) that worked the vpn fine, and the only thing missing on 11.3 is ppp0. All other hardware (routers, etc.) are the same. I suspect that pptpd tries to use ppp0 and the interface is non-existing. I can remotely ssh to the server, dns works, samba works, everything else works. Is it something I am missing? How do I create if ppp0 and link it to eth3, the internet gateway? Do I need ppp0?

I´ve got the problem that i get no sound with adobe Flash 10.0.32.18 in Firefox 3.5.4 on my Suse 11.2 What i´ve done: After Suse 11.2 installation i installed Audiocodecs by using 1 click installation from:
Restricted Formats/11.2 - openSUSE-Community
Switched default Sound to USB Device in Sound Options in Task bar. After this i uninstalled the Adobe Flash plugin and reinstalled the Flash Plugin (after uninstall of Plugin, it still appears in Firefox as "10.0r32") by using the install Option direct from the adobe homepage as Yast Installation.I get sound with Koffein, can play mp3, everything fine, but Flash Clips are without sound. For sound i use usb speakers plugged in direct to the USB port of my Asrock motherboard. Suse also find the on board Nvidia Soundchip, but i only use the usb speakers. For further test i installed VLC Player. Here i also got no Sound, but Video is still playing.
