Ubuntu Multimedia :: USB Ir Receiver Not Loading With Pc Turn-on/restart?

Jan 30, 2011

I have recently obtained a HTPC which has Mythbuntu pre-installed and already working with a remote it came with. I have another remote that I have changed over to (including the ir receiver) as it had easier button layout. Setup seems to have gone fine, but when the pc is restarted (turned of and on) then the ir receiver is not reloaded in the usb port. This was not a problem with the old remote. If once the pc is on I unplug and re-plug the ir receiver then it loads and works fine.

Running a lsusb in terminal shows that it is definitely not loaded on restart but is when re-plugged in.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Card - Speakers - Amp Or Receiver ?

May 20, 2010

In our factory, we used to use a bell system to signal breaks. Well they died. I figured it would be easy to replace those bells with speakers which ran into an Ubuntu box. I would just schedule some cron jobs to play a sound file to signal breaks.

However, I'm not talking about desktop speakers, and here's where the problem is. I only need two speakers. Do I need to run them both into a receiver/amplifier of some kind? Then run that into the back of the PC sound card? The actual speaker setup is where I'm new at. What would be the best way to get 2 (maybe more in future) LOUD speakers, separated by a few hundred feet, to the back of a computer that would control the ringing?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Setting Up Receiver To Computer Sound System?

May 14, 2010

im about 3 weeks into linux, started out with fedora actually, but switched to ubuntu. First days of linux was intense but slowly got the hang of it and i enjoy it way better than my previous op vista.

Sound System Setup-
Sony Receiver 3 speakers and 1 subwoofer

From receiver Y connector -(red plug and white plug R/L) to audio plug that goes into laptop output. Laptop- AsusTek g51x with

PHP Code:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC663 Analog [ALC663 Analog]  Subdevices: 0/1  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC663 Digital [ALC663 Digital]  Subdevices: 1/1  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

PHP Code:

alsactl version 1.0.22

Sound card has Headphone, output, and input holes.

OS- Ubuntu 10.04

The setup worked fine on vista, but on ubuntu whenever i plug in headphones (headphone output) the laptops internal speakers shut off and there is no sound on the headphones, and when i plug in the sony receiver audio plug to my sound card output hole, the laptops speakers are still playing but no sound in the sony receiver. Also when i open the Ubuntu sound manager (I think its either pulseaudio or ASLA, stock gnome one) , it says on the Output tab, "Choose a device for sound output", but there is only one option and it says

"Internal audio analog stereo".

Im literally extremely lost at this point, i have read the forums for help, ASLA wiki (only shows USB sound device support) messed with the Sound Preferences, and spend around 9 hours in the last 2 days trying to make this work.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Configure Suse To Send Audio To A Receiver In Some Cases?

Sep 10, 2010

I'm been struggling to find a way to configure suse to send audio to a receiver in some cases. - I have analog sound on firefox and "test volume" on Administrator Settings -> Sound, but just can't find a way to configure those to digital passthrough (tried to copy "audio.output.speaker_arrangement:Pass Through" to .config/kde.org/Phonon-Xine.xine.conf but didn't work)

Debian Multimedia :: GDM Goes To Tty On Restart / Doesn't Restart

Apr 5, 2010

Whenever I choose "Restart" from the GDM screen, GDM appears to shutdown, and the first TTY is displayed with a login prompt at the bottom (assuming I haven't used that TTY). I am by no estimation a patient individual, but I waited a solid minute or two for something to happen, but nothing ever did. I end up logging in as root on that TTY and running "shutdown -r now" to get the job done. This is a shared computer, and ideally any user should be able to perform shutdown options graphically from GDM.The only mentioned workaround doesn't apply to me as I am using the nvidia driver, not intel.

If I turn the volume on the speakers up more than about half way the mic picks up the feedback I get a high pitched squeal through the speakers.I've gone into "Sound Preferences" and muted "Input Volume," but it has no effect - the mic is still picking up and amplifying every keystroke & giving me feedback. How can I turn off the damn mic? Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Turn OFF Suspend Mode?

Feb 26, 2011

Disclaimer: I have very little linux desktop experience...I've only used command line stuff for work in my previous life. I am joyfully coming off of a long addiction to MS but am having a bit of a hard time adjusting.

ISSUE: I can't seem to figure out how to turn off suspend mode. I have turned every setting I could find in the power management to "do nothing" and I have turned off all of my power mgmt options in the system bios. A "friend" suggested I remove HAL...which caused me to lose my secondary internal HD and all of my usb devices...and the issue persisted. Every 20 minutes of no action the screen blanks and my monitor goes into standby mode which is making watching movies in bed a less than relaxing experience.

Some background that may or may not be useful: I installed kubunutu 10.04 (2.6.32-28-generic) from cd on a fresh HD. Initially I had issues with the wireless network and alsa/pulse sound. I worked through those through much trial and error but the suspend issue persists. I've uninstalled and re-installed lots of packages I probably shouldn't have been messing with and would really like to avoid a reinstall as this seems to be the final fix I need to get things running the way I want them.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Turn Off Monitor / Screen?

Jun 20, 2011

how to turn off your laptop screen in Ubuntu using a script/command, but none seem to have worked for me except one.

after digging around, I found the following suggestions:

1. xset dpms force off or xset dpms force suspend

This didn't work for many people, nor did it work for me, as the monitor would just turn on again after a few seconds. The second other suggestion I found to make this "stick was:

2. sleep 1; xset dpms force off
or sleep 1; xset dpms force suspend

This worked for some people, by delaying the monitor off function by one second, but it did not work for me, as the monitor would turn on again by itself after one minute exactly. Maybe those who thought this was the solution just walked away and never really found out their monitor plays sneak-peak with them. The next solution i found digging around was supposed to really make the monitor stay powered off:

3. sleep 1; && xset dpms force off
or sleep 1; && xset dpms force suspend

But this didn't work either; what a disappointment, and it also made my CPU and HDD freak out for a while while my monitor was off. So after some more digging around, I came up with the following: (and I don't remember where i got this, whether it was from here or elsewhere on the internet, but if it is your creation, please contact me and I'll edit the post to give you credit)

4. create a file and save as something like Monitor_off.sh in a folder of your preference with the following in it:

---------------------------------------
#!/usr/bin/python
import time
import subprocess
from Xlib import X

[Code]....

Then just go to: System>Preferences>Keyboard Shortcuts and assign a Keyboard combination shortcut to call and initiate the script. I chose "<Ctrl>+M" because it's easy to remember.

Make sure to disable any same keyboard shortcuts you may have in Compiz to avoid conflicts.

This final script just worked perfectly for me. And the Monitor just stays off until I shake the mouse or press a key on the keyboard, and my CPU and HDD don't rev up like a Harley. This final solution seems to be working for everyone of my friends without a glitch.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Turn On System Bell / PC Speaker

Mar 2, 2010

This is for all of you who are having problems getting sound out of the PC Speaker, as far as getting the system beep or system bell. In Karmic (9.10), a change was made to get rid of the system beeps and disable the pc speaker. Unfortunately for people who liked (or more likely need) the beeps, the changes occurred in multiple places and are not that easy to find. The pc speaker and beeps were disabled in response to this bug. I believe there were other bugs dealt with here because not everything that was done seems to be covered, if that makes sense.

This bug was created in response, in hope of getting the beeps turned back on. This post by one of the developers has some pretty comprehensive instructions for getting the beep back on. I want to note right now, that I did not have to apply his patch to get the beeps back on where I wanted them. It may already have been included in an update, or was obviated by something else I did. I realize this is pretty fragmented, and you may or may not want or need to go as far as I did with this. When I get a chance to do a new clean install of Karmic (maybe in a vm or something) I intend to go back over these instructions and try to create a synthesis of them that should work for certain. If I can, I'll figure out a way to script it.

One other thing I should point out. I didn't get the bug where I had to reload the pcspkr module on every boot, so that must be fixed. (I did have to remove it from the blacklist so it would be loaded on boot, but I didn't have to kill and reload it or add it to rc.local like some people did in those descriptions). I also did not get the bug of an endless loop of beep sound or multiple beep sounds, but that only happened to people who followed the directions to change the system beep to another sound.

Ubuntu Networking :: Installing An Asus N13 USB Wireless Receiver?

May 24, 2011

I trouble someone to provide some assistance on how to properly install this thing and get it to work? I have been all over the web trying all sorts of different "tutorials", but most of them start off okay, and then I get errors in the terminal, or the commands in the tutorials become specific to one person's particular system, and I can go no further. I really want to use Ubuntu 11 on a system that currently is running the reprehensible Windows Vista, and if I could just get this Wireless receiver to work, I would be able to format Vista into oblivion.

Please keep in mind that I am as green as a leprechaun when it comes to Ubuntu, so please make instructions verbose and geared to a layperson, if it wouldn't be too much trouble. So, the unit is plugged in, and ready to go. What's first?

Server :: Mail Sent Repeatedly To The Receiver?

Jul 2, 2010

A user from our domain sent an email with big attachments to a recepient of other domain, and the same email was sent several times to the receiver.

I checked the df and qf file on our sendmail server, in /var/spool/mqueue and found following:

qfo5SHgJqX006403:Mreply: read error from remote-host.somedomain.com.
qfo5SHgJqX006403:MDeferred: Connection timed out with remote-host.somedomain.com.

I deleted all qf and df files for this particular mail. So deleting the df and qf file has stopped sending mails repeatedly to the receiver.

Is this problem at our end or the receipient end? Why is the same mail sent several times to the receiver?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Xorg Will Not Turn Off - Sudo Service GDM Stop

Mar 1, 2010

I'm trying to install Nvidia drivers 190.53 on my karmic with a Nvidia 9500GT. I've downloaded the file from the Nvidia website. I've done this before on previous installations and everything went fine, however, with karmic turning off the xserver is a bit of a trick.

/etc/init.d/gdm stop doesn't work
sudo service gdm stop doesn't work
sudo killall gdm doesn't work.

After I run sh ./NVIDIA-linux-x86-190.53-pkg1.run a notice pops up and tells me I'm running x and I need to exit out. I thought I did. I've looked at the instructions on the Nvidia website, but I don't remember it being that complicated before and am a little nervous about removing files I don't know what they do.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Antec Fusion Black LCD Won't Turn Off On Shutdown

Mar 8, 2011

I've been struggling a while with getting the iMON LCD/IR-receiver on my Antec Fusion Black case to shutdown together with the system (XBMC Live 10). But it won't. When it's turned off the LCD still lights up the whole room. Many have proposed the "solution" of setting the machine into hibernation instead but that however won't work for me, since I'm unable to suspend my system.

It is the LCD/IR-module that prevents me from suspending and I haven't found a solution to properly unload it on suspending (it's way above my linux knowledge). getting the display to turn off the backlight when the system is turned off.

how to get the eject function to work on my Antec Veris rm200 remote I would be very grateful, I was told about that it could get fixed with irexec but I do not know how since I haven't been able to find a good tutorial on the subject.
