Ubuntu Multimedia :: Jack Runs But No Sound?
Sep 4, 2010
Jack runs, but I can't get sound to play through it. Another thing that happens is when I launch jack, all audio in the system, whether its connected to jack or not, goes off. There are no errors or anything in the messages window. And I checked to see if it was connected to the correct interface. I have a mac mini and I run ppc lucid lynx. The system does detect my hardware, and its not muted. All I want to do is use MusE. Is there maybe anyway to run MusE without jack?

After installing I was not able to get many of the audio programmes to work. After some reading, I realised that this was probably due to jack not starting.
I was unable to get jack to start normally but have been able to get it started with the playback only option selected. Programmes that use jack now work, however there is no sound once jack has been started. The sound does work in other programs when jack is not started. Strangely, I only have to open qjackctl for the sound to stop, and jack is not even started. Initially I thought these problems were due to my sound card not being supported, but I believe that alsa support was added for the via 1708 codec at some point. I found that support had been added in a document showing the changes between alsa versions; however I cannot find the exact model listed as a supported sound card on the alsa site.
I believe that altering jack settings could fix the problem, as i have been able to get audio to work in hydrogen by selecting plughw:0 but there is still no sound in other programs. I have tried altering many other settings but to no avail, however I do not really understand the meaning of the settings that i am adjusting.
Does anyone know what settings to adjust or know something else that might fix this problem so that sound works once jack has been started?
Also, would programmes that use jack such as audacity, hydrogen, and ardour work with pulseaudio as the main sound server if I were to install normal ubuntu - it might be worth seeing if my soundcard works with the puleaudio sound server
if this helps, here is the error message received when jack does not start when the normal duplex option is selected.
21:24:04.867 Patchbay deactivated.
21:24:04.868 Statistics reset.
21:24:04.886 ALSA connection change.

also, when i open alsamixer in the terminal for some reason the headphone part is greyed out, even when the sound is working before qjackctl is opened.

I recently bought a set of 2.1 speakers, all is fine. I like to listen to my DAB radio through them. When I boot up, (runlevel 3), sound is there via the mic/line-in jack, but as soon as KDE starts, the sound cuts. I can get it back by:~>alsamixerand then F6 and then scroll to mic, switching to ON and slider up to full and then mic boost up to 65% or so.Can I tell something in KDE to default to mic/line-in on?kmix does not give the full picture I see in other's posts, like here:ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hostingjust a single slider under each tab, like this:

I am trying to set my computer up to do sound sequencing. I want to plug my MIDI keyboard in and record with a sequencer. Running 10.04, was following a tutorial on installing JACK, and my audio stopped working. Since then, I've gone through all guides I can find, some advising an upgrade of ALSA, some saying to use OCC. I've tried both, but nothing seems to work.
I suspect it may have something to do with libjack0. I could not install jackd because it claimed libjack0 to be the wrong version, and for some reason I couldn't upgrade. So I uninstalled libjack0, then installed jackd, which automatically included the version of libjack0 it wanted. After that, I could get the JACK server running, but the computer had no sound.
I will post whatever logs or information necessary to troubleshoot, but I don't know exactly how or what to post. If you need logs, please tell me how to get them.

I have a Dell Vostro 320 running Ubuntu 10.10. I can get sound through the onboard speakers but when I plug headphones into the jack, the onboard speakers mute (correct behaviour), but no sound comes from the headphones (incorrect behaviour). The headphones do work with other sound sources.I have made sure all the alsa drivers are up to date and correct and the system is seeing the sound card OK according to aplay -l:
The alsamixer run from the command line or Gnome shows "Master", "PCM", "Beep" and "Capture" all normal with nothing muted. The alsa-base.conf file has the following as the last line as per various posts that seem to have a fix for this problem:options snd-hda-intel model=dell-vostro position_fix=0 enable=yes.

I had sound. My sound stops working after install jack. Jack server starts well, and the jack log shows no error messages. If I run Muse, it recognizes jack and show no error messages, but I have no sound output. Where should I start investigating? I'm using Karmic.

I'm dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10 64bit on a new HP laptop.In Ubuntu, I'm not getting any sound from the headphone jack. I've tried a couple of different solutions but haven't had much luck. Sound works through the internal speakers in both Windows and Ubuntu. Sound through the headphone jack works only in Windows.The sound card is a IDT 92HD75B3X5.This is a fresh 9.10 install, save for the changes mentioned below.I've attempted to use the gnome-alsa fix that's mentioned in a few threads, but I don't have a "Headphone" tab to "un-mute".I've attempted to recompile the driver as mentioned in this thread

I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 recently to find that my computer will not play mp3 files in Rythmbox, Amarok, or Kaffeine media players. All of the FLAC files I have ripped from CDs work, but no mp3 files work. I have downloaded and installed the ubuntu restricted codecs from Synaptic as well as the codecs prompted by Rythmbox rebooted, and still no result.Like I said, the .FLACs play fine.On another note, no sound is being transmitted to my earbuds. The only sound will come from the laptop speakers.

I have a new install of 10.10 on a Toshiba Satellite with a dual boot of win7. I installed 10.10 and on the first night I swore the headphone jack sent sound to my external speakers (may of been plugged in during install). Then the next day I couldn't get any sound out of the jack. Sound kept coming out of my internal speakers. In win7 the jack worked normally. In Ubuntu I have checked sound preferences and my alsa mixer. There is no listing for a headphone jack (so it is not muted).

I'm a complete Linux newbie - only installed it yesterday, and have spent hours trying to get my M-Audio Firewire Solo sound card to work. I can hear nothing at all. I know nothing of Linux, but am willing to learn. While I learn though, it would be nice to listen to a little Hall & Oates. I've got to the stage where the error messages I'm receiving don't bring up any results on Google. Here's what things look like (watch out, big pic):
Those sample rate errors appear in the terminal when I start ffado-mixer. I'm running JACK with everything set as I think it's supposed to be, except that 'Realtime' is unchecked.If I start JACK running with 'Realtime' checked, it tries to launch and fails, saying "JACK is running in realtime mode, but you are not allowed to use realtime scheduling. After applying these changes, please re-login in order for them to take effect". I don't know what more it wants me to do - i've already added
@audio  rtprio 100
@audio - nice -10
@audio  memlock unlimited
to /etc/security/limits.conf, and selected the 2.6.31-11-rt kernel on GRUB bootup. I'm a member of 'audio' and 'disk' groups like'm supposed to be. Have I not got the connections right in JACK? Have I got some sample rate settings wrong somewhere?I'm not even bothered about low latency with the realtime kernel right now, I just want to hear some sound

I am running Ubuntu Studio 9.10 and have been using wineasio to connect Reaper to JACK successfully for a while now. However, I am now experimenting with using multiple soundcards in JACK (via alsa_in). My main card is an M-audio delta 44 (4 inputs) and I want to route the inputs from my onboard soundcard into Reaper using JACK. No problem so far.. This all works with alsa_in. But the problem is I can't get reaper to start with more than 4 in/out.
With wineasio, there is an environment variable "ASIO_INPUTS=" and "ASIO_OUTPUTS=" which allows you to set the number of in/out... Which I already used to bump it up to 4 when the default was 2. But when I try to set the inputs to 8, for example, Reaper still only recognizes that there are 4 inputs in its configuration.
The problem here is I need more than 4 separate input tracks going into Reaper simultaneously. It would also be nice to just have some "virtual" in/out ports to route things around in more ways. Another option I have considered is the "Rearoute" drivers in Reaper, however I'm not sure if that will play well with JACK. I'll have to test it tonight and see. I guess if it doesn't connect to JACK, it may be theoretically possible to run JACK simultaneously with the Rearoute driver with Reaper, and then actually use alsa_in on the same card to bridge it to JACK (in addition to using alsa_in for the onboard soundcard inputs as well)... But if this even works, I'm not sure if the latency will be worse ...
Does anybody have any insights on this? Am I doing something wrong or overlooking something? Is this just a limitation of wine or wineasio that it cannot assign more inputs than the primary sound card physically has? Would "virtual ports" help me at all in this endeavor?

I've got an Acer Aspire 5101 with Natty on it and everything works so far, but I can't start Muse. It says: "Muse failed to find a jack audio server". At the bottom it also says: "...if Jack was started check if it was started as the same user as Muse". This might be the issue. But how can I check this? BTW: Jackd has been installed and I am a Member of the Audio Group.
I am new to Ubuntu and don't know how to fix this. I got this Notebook for free, because my Brother wanted to dispose it as it didn't worked properly after he reinstalled xp. Only the dvd-drive is broken, the rest is in really good condition for such an old thing. After a lot of trial and error I could finally install Natty from USB.

I have installed Fedora 10-x86_64. I was happy and content with the distribution. Earlier, I found that there is no sound on my headphone's jack where as the normal sound output from my laptops's speakers is OK. I fiddled with the available mixers but couldnt get anything. There seem to be 5 different mixers (HDA, ALSA, OSS), 3 for the playback and 2 for the capture.
I am using an acer 4530 laptop. It has a nvidia Nforce MCP77 chipset. and the o/p lsmod| grep snd :

I have a Toshiba Satellite L655, workin with Maverick. Sound comes out of my main speakers that are on my laptop, but when I try to plug in my Bose headphones or my Logitech speakers, they don't want to work period. The headphone jack works I know for a fact because it works in Windows.
When I open up Kmix, it doesn't show my headphone port at all, it shows up "RV710/730 Digital Stereo (HDMI)" which is my TV's audio output and then my main laptops "Internal Audio Analog Stereo".

I am running Karmic (9.10) on an MSI U120 Wind. I dislike netbook-remix but that is beside the point.
Last night I made the biggest mistake of my life which is causing a loss of still counting hours. I decided to do an update, due to having enough bandwidth, and security updates to download.
So it finished, and I went to sleep.
This morning I went to plug in my speakers to the audio jack so I can listen to music loud, and it was all distorted. I changed al 8 or 9 volume controls and nothing. I unplugged the wire from the audio jack, and the sound is perfect on my netbook's speakers.
I have tried different wires, speakers, editing config files, removing and purging related packages, and nothing works...
I have been google-ing for hours and everyone seems to have the same problem, but all of the supposed fixes do not work for me...
Here is a pastebin of my Alsa info : [URL]
I fear switching back to winblowz..

I have onboard sound, and have a blue jack that can be used for input sound wise. You can plug a device in and then just play it through your speakers. This works for me in Windows 7, but I'm not sure how to get this to work in Ubuntu.
I went to my sound settings, but didn't see anything to make my input jack active. I'm just basically using my pc as a pass through to play through my pc speakers.

I believe my issue is that my computer is not detecting it because when i go to sound options it only shows internal audio under my hardware profile

I am, however, still having issues with the operating system: namely with sound. In the beginning after the 184 updates and solving the screen resolution issue, I found that I had NO SOUND despite the fact that video runs like a dream.
About a week after installation, I found that I had sound . I then proceeded to solve the screensaver issue by removing the Gnome screensaver and installing xscreensaver. After this, AGAIN NO SOUND!! (I'm not sure whether solving the screensaver issue has affected the sound that I'd previously had.)
I also use the KFCE desktop.
Below are the specs for my netbook if it's of any use:

I have a small problem with getting sound to come through my headphone jack with Fedora 13. I switched to Fedora 13 from uBuntu and I had the same problem on uBuntu.
