OpenSUSE Multimedia :: No Sound In 11.3 64-Bit
Aug 16, 2010
I just moved from 11.2 to 11.3 and I find that I'm unable to get my sound working. I get this output from dmesg:
Code:
[ 6.414532] EDAC MC0: Giving out device to 'amd64_edac' 'RevF': DEV 0000:00:18.2
[ 6.414550] EDAC PCI0: Giving out device to module 'amd64_edac' controller 'EDAC PCI controller': DEV '0000:00:18.2' (POLLED)
[ 6.506460] Error: Driver 'pcspkr' is already registered, aborting...
[Code]....
I don't seem to get any sound out of any speaker tests, they all return that the device is missing, but I'll try others (I can't remember exactly which commands I've tried at this point, I've been scouring the web looking for things to try).

I have suse 11.4 installed and I wish to replace the on-board sound chip with an add-on sound card. The following are available at my local shop but they cannot advise whether any will work on Linux Suse 11.4.
Anyone know which of these cards will work on Suse 11.4?
Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium HD
Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
Asus Xonar DS

I recently bought a set of 2.1 speakers, all is fine. I like to listen to my DAB radio through them. When I boot up, (runlevel 3), sound is there via the mic/line-in jack, but as soon as KDE starts, the sound cuts. I can get it back by:~>alsamixerand then F6 and then scroll to mic, switching to ON and slider up to full and then mic boost up to 65% or so.Can I tell something in KDE to default to mic/line-in on?kmix does not give the full picture I see in other's posts, like here:ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hostingjust a single slider under each tab, like this:

openSUSE 11.2 64bit
libxine1 from Packman
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
Maybe it's just an Amarok2 problem, but whenever another app (for example Konversation) plays a sound file, the audio instantly cuts out (in Amarok2) and will not come back unless I quit Amarok2 and restart it.
Amarok2 has only the options - "HDA ATI SB VT 1708S Analog" or "PulseAudio" (which is NOT installed).
alsa-info here - [URL]
Also I am totally confused by the mixer, it has so many knobs that I am totally lost!
here's a lovely pic - [URL]

I encountered this on a 10.3 system but there might be similar problem with the 11 series. Having gone through the business of obtaining config info on this card via pnpdump and subsequently using Yast to configure and install it, I encountered a situation whereby the card was fully functional as far as the "Test Sound" option of Yast was concerned. However, after a reboot, it was not loaded and no sound was possible. Debugging the "alsasound" script, I discovered that the directory /proc/asound was not in place at that time and, therefore, sound was not started.
The solution was to add the module name (snd_sbawe) to /etc/sysconfig/kernel to the parameter "MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT". Seems like Yast did not see a reason to do this itself.

I recently installed the x64 rpm of OSS on my Opensuse 11.2 installation (alsa does not have drivers for my lynx card). Sound works beautifully in KDE (login sounds, apps produce sound, etc), EXCEPT for firefox. I can get no sound at all from firefox. I am baffled at why only firefox does not play audio.
System:
OpenSuse 11.2 (it is a pretty fresh install)
OpenSoundSystem 4.2
KDE 4.4 (updated from factory repos)

The laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ45-307tx (more specs at link below)

After a fresh install of 11.3 from 11.2 on my system I went about updating packages to play DVD's. On 11.2 I found a web page that talk you through it and it worked like a dream. But can't get vlc, cine, mplayer etc to play DVD's with sound only picture on11.3 or sound from websites, no sorry mplayer will play sound but it's mess up and i can't get rid of any subtitles.
I've been searching for almost a day, and no luck, I justended up installing more packages.
(my system does play sound so it's not on mute as it always plays the start up turn)

Last Night I upgraded to KDE 4.5.90 (KDE 4.6 RC1). I got a message telling me hardware had been removed. After much trial and error it seems that the update REMOVED alsa-firmware. To fix this just reinstall alsa-firmware logout and login again and your sound should work again. I am not sure if you need to logout and login but i know if you do it does work and I guess KDE should detect it when it loads. So if your upgrading to RC1 remember after installation reinstall alsa-firmware
as root > zypper in alsa-firmware

At work I can ssh into my home PC (both work and home PCs running Opensuse 11.2 i586) using ssh. X11 forwarding works, and so does VNC over ssh tunnelling. However I was wondering if there's any straightforward way to use Banshee over the ssh tunnel like that, or to run Banshee on the work computer and have it access my collection on the home computer?

I just lost flash sound on my openSUSE 11.2 x86_64 desktop. I'm using the built-in HDA Intel audio, and I have sound in all other appliations (Amarok, mplayer, Minitube, ect) but not in Flash (I've tried Firefox and rekonq; no dice). I've never had issue with Flash sound before (hough I know many have) and I can't seem to find anything recent or relevant to my issue (most of the problems reference pulseaudio, which I, thankfully, do not have, or are for older versions of Flash).
I'd like to know where to start looking for this issue; it came up fairly recently (I don't use Flash all that often so I can't say when) and I have made no concious upgrades or changes that would affect it (though I do zypper dup pretty regularly). I updated to KDE 4.4 but I had Flash sound afterwards; I also tried downgrading the Flash player to 10.42 (instead of .45), but that didn't help. This issue is global (to all users on the system), so I don't think it's messed up configuration at the user level.

I cannot get sound to work with my new installed Opensuse 11.2. If I check yast (sound card configuration), I can play a nice testsound. However, Kde (I am using kde 4.4.2) does not issue any sound at all.

You need to know that these instructions work for anyone who has more than one way to play sound on the computer: For instance, I have a onboard sound card on my motherboard AND an ATI HD Video card that produces HDMI sound.

I seem to have a problem with sound after upgrading KDE. All multimedia applications (Amarok, xine, vlc) do not produce sound at all. Sounds at startup and notifications have also disappeared. However, when I go to yast -> sound -> play test sound, it works. I tried to update my sound drivers following instructions from here: Alsa-update - openSUSE but it didn't change anything. I also tried to configure the sound output device in Amarok (Configure -> Playback -> Configure Phonon). The only option that it offers is PulseAudio Sound server, and when I press "test", nothing happens (although it is supposed to play a sound).
I have the following packages installed:
alsa-plugins-pulse-1.0.23-28.1.i586
alsa-driver-kmp-default-1.0.23.20100626_2.6.31.12_0.2-1.1.i586
alsa-firmware-1.0.23-8.1.noarch
alsa-utils-1.0.23-20.1.i586
alsa-plugins-1.0.23-28.1.i586
alsa-1.0.23-62.1.i586
alsa-tools-1.0.21-2.5.i586
alsa-tools-gui-1.0.21-2.5.i586
alsa-oss-1.0.17-53.1.i586
libasound2-1.0.23-62.1.i586

I just installed OpenSUSE 11.3/KDE4 and now I have no sound from the headphone jack. I checked Kmix and everything is fine.I do remember that in OpenSUSE 11.2 I had this similar problem which I solved by switching ON/OFF the "Independent HP" option in Kmix. The problem with 11.3 is that this option is not available in Kmix.

I have tried putting the PCM to full levels this has not worked. This is a fresh installation of openSUSE 11.3. I wanted to install a stable version of Linux on my friends system. All other sounds and codecs are working well, except flash in Firefox. This is not a good example. Is there a command line mixer I could check the sound levels on. Like ALSAMIXER for Gnome but for KDE.

get my sound working again. It worked on my 11.2 installation although I had some problems then too.
The installation I use is running in vmware 2.0. It's running on a laptop which I use for my company. Since the company only support xp I don't want to overwrite that installation with opensuse. Since I like opensuse personally I use it within vmware for my personal purposes (during evenings/weekends). Beside I have opensuse running on physical hw for file/printing/mail purposes which is used by the whole family.
The sound 11.3 produces is garbled. I did followed the advice in 'SDB:Audio troubleshooting'. What I notice is that speaker-test is producing this output:
Code:
speaker-test 1.0.23
Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
[code]....
