OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Change Region Of Copied DVD?

Apr 11, 2010

I have many DVDs that I purchased in Europe (Region 2) and I would like to copy them and change the region for easier reading here in North America (Region 1). In an ideal world, region 0 would be even better.k9copy works fine as far as copying, but the region is kept. I haven't found any setting in k9copy to change the region - is there one? If not, any other application that can do it?

CentOS 5 :: How To Change Owner Of Copied Files To Newly Created Users

Jan 29, 2010

CentOS 5.4 install, likewise open standard install (For active directory authentication).I have a license service which requires a license.txt be in the users home directory. The group owner for license.txt must be the same as the license service. Whenever a new domain user logs in, it creates the all the appropriate files but the group owner for license.txt is the users domain group. My current workaround seems like more effort than it's worth, is there another way to get this process solved easier/more secure?

- copy the license.txt into /etc/skel

- created a script to check for the presence of license.txt, check it's permissions and change them if necessary

- gave the domain's group sudo [nopasswd] access to the script (the script is not writable)

- execute the script in /etc/bashrc

Security :: Debian Shows File Permissions Change When Copied To A Windows Partition?

Dec 10, 2010

Some time back using this computer a SucKit rootkit was found. Having dd urandomed the drive, flattened CMOS battery, flashed BIOS, run Knoppix live CD 6.1,using no flat pack battery (laptop), and memtested the RAM, I am still having problems with what I suspect is a javascript file that tries to reload the rootkit from? firmware. I suspect the firmware as everything else should have eradicated it??

Also it or a hacker via a backdoor then corrupts the drivers so devices malfunction. Windows security programs and rootkit detectors don't seem to pick it up. Fresh install of Windows or linux after the above still show this problem, though internet not used. The person who admitted rootkitting this machine is capable of writing java programs or using javascripts to do all this.

When viewed using Ubuntu 8.4 files and dates on a Windows partition appear normal both in file manager and terminal. However booting using Knoppix CD these files are all green, and I cannot change their permissions, even as root. ie: everything is green including text files etc. If I copy them to a linux partition, I can change their permissions and make them nonexecutable and nonwritable. Also on the Windows FAT32 partition the . directory has the date 1 Jan 1970.

If I disable any green files, I can shutdown and reboot cleanly. If I don't I start having problems shutting down [/usr/sbin/init ?] And always these follow a pattern:

Can't remember details as I have now corralled the beast but error messages relating to:

nfs-server
inet.d/statd

are the start of these.

I know the disks are being read, their name pops up and everything, but I guess it just cant read the files.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Region Free DVD Drive / Burner?

Jul 11, 2010

I know I can use things like regionset and VLC to bypass region encoding (which I already do), I was really wondering if you can actually purchase a drive that is "region free" without having to apply hacks/ patches/ voodoo etc.I've done the "google thing" and all I come up with is hacks while using windows, I'd really like to get a drive that is completely region free.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Cannot Playback Commercial DVDs On External DVD (Wrong Region/mounting ?

Jan 19, 2011

Having issues getting my external dvd drive to play nice with 10.10. The usual horses have been beaten thoroughly.

1.) I've installed Medibuntu

2.) I've grabbed libdvdcss2, libdvdread, run the install script, etc., etc.

3.) I've attempted to check the region, with no avail.

When I try a regionset, it offers the following complaint:

ERROR: Could not open disc "(null)"! Please ensure there is a readable CD or DVD in the drive.

4.) The drive and disc(s) are all operational, as they work on different partitions and/or machines fine.

VLC/Totem will, briefly, open the menu for a given DVD. The menu video will briefly play, sputter, then die, which sounds like a region issue.

Any idea why the regionset isn't working? Perhaps it's not mounting right?

OpenSUSE :: Cloning Files - Copied To The Other System Automatically?

Mar 8, 2010

I have multiple OpenSuSE 11.2 systems. With some files being on one system I would like to have another computer to have the files as well. Is there a way to have the files copied to the other system automatically? FTP is one way but it is too cumbersome. I am thinking of something like disk or directory mirroring. Does OpenSuSE have something like that?

If it was real time mirroring that would be better. I.e if a write to one file on one system is done, then this would be done on the other system with the same directory/file.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Rescued Disk - What To Do With The Bad Blocks That Were Not Copied

Oct 13, 2010

My old system disk almost failed me. I dd_rescued the disk onto a new one (_don't_ use dd_rhelp, that one took days and seemed to forget what it had scanned more than once). The condition of the disk was not very good. So naturally I expected the subsequent fsck.ext3 to bomb half of the new disk. But obviously only a few inodes were affected and I lost only about 10 files completely (mostly on the root partition and not the home partition - yeay!).

However, I then ran a badblocks and put all the bad blocks into a file. I could use this to run fsck but I fear that

1. It could undo or even redo worse than what the first fsck run did, and

2. giving the list of bad blocks, fsck might on the one hand rescue/flag damaged files (which is what I want), but I don't want it to flag the bad blocks on the new disk as well (they are not bad blocks anymore, just copies of bad blocks).

So, how can I single out problematic files using my list of bad blocks (which I can then look at one by one if they could be rescued) without flagging the supposedly bad blocks on the new disk.

Ubuntu :: Touchpad To Big - Can Disable The Outer Region ?

Jun 20, 2010

I have this 17" Dell laptop, and the touchpad is huge. My family use it and when we're typing, we brush of this incredibly large touchpad and end up pumping characters into the middle of a prior paragraph.

They've reduced the size of the touchpad on the newer versions of this model, but I'm wondering is it possible to hack it somehow so the outer perimeter (say 1cm) is 'dead'?

Most configuration software available is of no use to me since I think it's not a synaptics mouse. (I don't have multitouch - that's why I think this)

This is really frustrating. Does anyone know how I can do this?

This is what I found in dmesg:

shpchp 0000:00:01.0: HPC vendor_id 1022 device_id 9602 ss_vid 0 ss_did 0

shpchp 0000:00:01.0: Cannot reserve MMIO region

shpchp: Standard Hot Plug PCI Controller Driver version: 0.4

I'm running an AMD laptop With Lucid x86_64, a custom install I did off the alternate iso with onlyLXDE installed.

All my hardware works fine and this just seems like some sort of bug.

Is there anyway I can silence all kernel messages at bootup?

This is what I have in /etc/default/grub and it's not working to silence it.

Ubuntu :: Cursor Move Within Limited Region Via Synergy During Dual Monitor?

Jan 24, 2011

I'm using Mac as a main machine and Ubuntu Netbook as a secondary. Although synergy gives me a good control over Netbook when it works without external monitor, but when I activate VGA monitor, I can only move around the limited region (details are below).

Phenomenon: Cursor can move in the external monitor's screen. No way to move cursor into the netbook's screen via synergy (it's possible from local touchpad/mouse) In the external monitor's screen, curosor moves only within limited region, which I'm guessing is as large as the size of netbook's screen.

Configuration: Use dual screens (uncheck "Same image in all monitors" in the tool "Monitor" on Ubuntu)

Env:
- OS: Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook edition
- HW: Starling Netbook (star3)
