OpenSUSE Hardware :: Screen Corruption On Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB?
Jun 1, 2011
I'm getting some weird corruption on the screen in openSUSE 11.4 or Ubuntu Natty and wondered if anyone has seen this or could offer some suggestions. My config: Athlon XP 2400+, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (R350NH), 1GB RAM, fresh install of either OS. It manifests as evenly spaced columns of discolored pixels, which change as different windows are drawn on the screen. At first I tried compiling the latest radeon drivers from git, but that didn't help. I've also tried nomodeset, x11failsafe, turning off desktop effects, turning off dri/dri2, and nothing seems to help. The corruption appears even if I switch to the vesa driver or fbdev. Any suggestions? This has got me stumped.

Installed Natty a few days ago and everything was working fine. I have a dual head setup with the left monitor rotated Clockwise 90 degrees (AKA rotate left). When I setup the the displays properly, instead of just cloning, I noticed a problem, making Unity unusable. When I apply the rotation either in the xorg.conf fle or using xrandr, the display shows a corrupt looking image. When I turn compiz off and use metacity instead it works perfectly fine.
Display Adapter:
Code:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Cedar PRO [Radeon HD 5450]
xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Desktop"
Screen "RightScreen"
Screen "LeftScreen" LeftOf "RightScreen"

I just replaced my older monitor with a slightly newer, much nicer Dell 1905FP. I need to have it rotated, but I have no clue how to rotate it. I have seen several xorg.conf modifications that are supposed to work for some of the nvidia drivers, but nothing for the generic radeon driver. The radio buttons in SaX2 are grayed out as well. How do I set up X11 to rotate my display? Preferably without installing the other ATi driver, as I have tried before to switch to that one, and have been unsucessfull.

Similar to the other threads, but a completely different card/manufacturer. The others were mostly Nvidia. I have a dial boot machine, HP PAvillion with Windows 7 and now openSUSE, 11.4.
One (of my many problems right now!) is the screen / monitor constantly blinks/flashes/blanks. About every 15-20 seconds, it will go black for about 1-2 seconds and then come right back.
I was using KDE the first go around, and have since re-installed and am now running Gnome. I switched to Mint in between and did not have this problem. Also, I do not appear to have this happen at the logon screen. I have also tried ubuntu and didn't have the problem. I have checked the screen saver settings, and power save options and have them set to off and a couple of hours respectively. I have also modified the xorg.conf.d file to hard code the monitor settings. (Dell 23"). The card is Dual DVI out, and I have it converting to VGA to the monitor.

I'm using openSUSE 11.4 on a HP Pavilion laptop, and it was working fine until last week or so. A zypper update seems to have upgraded to a package with a nasty bug though: it now boots into a black screen, instead of showing kdm.And the only option after that is to forcefully shut down the machine;ither Ctrl+Alt+F1 nor Ctrl+Backspace nor Ctrl+Alt+Del does anything. Not sure if this means the kernel hangs,or just that X blocks all keyboard input as well. The issue with powering off with the hardware button is that I don't get full log files (especially kdm.log) so it's a bit hard to investigate...I have tried many things, here are the results:
* Default radeon driver + kdm = black screen
* nomodeset + radeonhd driver + kdm = black screen [driver doesn't support HD4200 anyway]
* nomodeset + radeon driver explicitely requested + kdm = black screen

I finished making a custom build OS of openSUSE 11.4 using suse studio but when I tried running the LIVE DVD in a laptop with an ATi Mobility Radeon HD 4250, I got a black screen. Everything from the word go seemed fine showing everything from the loading Kernel message, but the screen that is supposed to show the user accounts is surprisingly absent and only a black screen in its place.
I have only seen this problem with ATi graphics, Intel graphics work just fine. I haven't tested it on a laptop with nvidia. I'm using the default openSUSE 11.4 Kernel (Kernel-Desktop 2.6.37.6-0.5.1), Xorg-X11-driver-video-radeonhd 1.3.0_20100512_80ba041-2.1, Mesa 7.10.2-7.3.1, Xorg-X11 7.6-43.44.1. I have listed these few packages contained in the build, but I'm not sure where to look or what I may be missing.

When I put my laptop, a Presario X1000 to sleep that uses Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500], when it comes back up, I get just black and white "nosie" on the screen.
Even after I do cntr+alt+F1 and then cntrl+alt+F7 it still doesn't appear to restore the regular screen.

I am new to linux but will try and be as precise as I can. I have a Dell Insp. 1545 with 3GB ram with 10.04_64
Problem: Rather out of the blue upon login, from the time of entering password to the desktop, is MUCH slower. I have no splash enabled and there is some reference to AppArmour profiles (it sits there at this apparmour reference , then sits trying to load desktop). However, I have never configured apparmor. Finally, on last login, there was some sort of screen corruption prior to getting to desktop.
Prior to all this i noticed that firefox "blinked" when I was using it, and then said that it needed to shutdown/restart for updates. I did notice at that time two of my previous tabs sortof acted oddly (moved around then disappeared).
I have no SSH/Server software etc activated.
I did change visudo so that sudo timeout shorter than it was. However that is the only modification to the system recently.

I've just installed F12 and during boot and at the desktop, the screen has an issue. I have a 9700 pro and the resolution gets detected properly (1440x900), but it's like the frequency is slightly off. I see the screen fine, but the screen looks almost as if it's underwater. My monitor accepts two freq at 1440x900, and the issue is at the 60Hz setting. If I change it to 75Hz, the screen is fine, but the corruption is still there during boot and at the login screen. Ubuntu 8.04, 9.10 and Mint 8 all work just fine at 60Hz. This is using the default driver for my ATI card. The corruption was there in anaconda when I was installing F12, but figured it would not be there after the install. Can I somehow force 75Hz to the kernel mode set? I'll try to get a video up on ..... soon as it can describe my problem perfectly without words.

I have 11.4 with kde 4.6, all up to date via YAST. Radeon driver, legacy ATI display hardware. LibreOffice is latest from the Stable:11.4 repo.
When I open LO, it causes the desktop to break up - diagonal stripes of blocks, and garbage (offset blocks) form all mouse movements from there until kdm restarted.
I restart by switching to F1 console, init 3, the init 5 as root. I can't seem to find any useful messages or logs.

Recently installed Slackware, and now trying to get my two monitors working nicely. After much hair-tearing I've got Xinerama set up so that each monitor displays separate information.I'm using an nVidia 9800 GT dual-headed graphics card. This is my xorg.conf file:
Code:
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "Xinerama" "ON"
EndSection
[code]....
then the mouse is stuck on the right screen. It seems to recognise that the physical right monitor is the virtual right monitor, but if you try to move off the left side of the screen, it appears on the right side of the same screen. This seems to be similar to the bug described here, but that's meant to be fixed in v1.2.3 and I have v1.5.0 (according to pkgtool). I have also considered physically swapping the monitors, but then I would have to edit all the other OSes I use to know about the change, and also on principle I feel I should work out why it's not working...

I recently install 13.37 x64 and I'm attempting to get my video card going but I'm having some problems with X11 currently. After running xorgsetup I checked the xorg.conf file with VI editor and the device was configured as "modesetting". I have the "nouveau" driver blacklisted and attempted to use the more stable "nv" driver with my GeForce 9800 GT and the xserver crashes claiming several files can not be found/accessed. The "vesa" driver issues a highly garbled screen and crashes as well.
The driver now claims a kernel module has possession of the video card and the "nv" driver will no longer work. Anyone have any idea because this did not happen when I used version 13.1 x64 with the same card and had X11 configured with "nv" until I could install the Nvidia proprietary driver.
Edit: (update) I reinstalled 13.37 again and this time it registered the X11 server under "nv" as the driver using xorgsetup, yet it still required the "nouveau" driver edited in to actually enable X11. I'm going the SBo Nvidia packages possibly later tonight or tomorrow anyway. Hopefully it should work fine until then.

While trying to boot into the normal user the system aborts the login and tells me that /home does not have write permission.
The login manager gives:
Code:
If I log in as root and do a
Code:
Or to open some files, it works and no problem seems to exist.
All this happened for the first time after running luckybackup to fusion the old files of one home directory under EXT4 with the new files from my notebook (ext3, Opensuse 11.1 KDE3) in order to come to a unified home. But then the system did not boot any more. I tried to change the owner but some files did not have write access (not even as root, "the file does not exist"). So I thought I might have a a file system problem.
So I thought: unmount the /dev/sdb1 and then do a fschk on it. Runs and was perfect. So I did run it with forcing to control inode per inode.
No error.
So I thought: you screwed up the system. I then decided to reinstall OpensSuse11.3 from the scratch and create the same user for home. I formatted the rest (/swap /boot /root) and left only /home. Installation runs brilliantly, all ok, it comes to the login..................

This is harder than it should be. 233 MHz Pentium Pro, 128 MB RAM, Matrox Mystique graphics. The important thing is 35W idle and no fans - a perfect firewall.
Things discovered so far:
- I need to burn DVDs for this machine with -speed=2 (sigh!)
- The syslinux boot loader cannot display its graphical menu - must use the syslinux boot: prompt (double sigh)
- The Live CD does eventually boot into X
The install DVD boots but quickly displays a "You do not have enough RAM to install Fedora on this machine" dialog (this is in text mode). Two questions:
Q1. Is it possible to get anaconda on the DVD to use a swap partition (or otherwise fit into 128MB)?
Q2: Failing that, can I install from the Live CD without starting X?

My foray into Linux is one of hopeful necessity:I have a friend who doesn't have any comp & whose son is leaving for the military. I have an old pc I was planning to recycle but instead would like to see if it can be put back into use.She has wireless service in her apt building which she would like to access. I don't know if the versions of Linux that are light duty enough to operate on such a low end machine still suwifi networking... (I will have to download it at home to a mac, burn it to cd & install from there)? Is it possible to install a wireless card into an old P3/128mb ram (IBM 6564/GL300) and get it working?

I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.

I tried to boot from a Fedora 12 installation DVD. My machine configuration is:
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-965P-DS4
Display Card: X300 PCI-E 128MB
After the "Welcome to Fedora 12!" screen, I then click on either: Install or upgrade an existing system [or] Install system with basic video driver [both display the same following screen and then the machine halt on] Loading vmlinuz . Loading initrd.img . .ready. Probing EDD (edd=off to disable) ... ok The number and cap lock have no responses. When I changed to another display card, it has no problem at all.

I have a machine with an ATI Radeon 7000/VE graphic card and I can not get the screen resolution I need. This is running on redhat enterprise 4 OS (32bit). My monitor is a 1600x1280 but I can not get anything better than 1024x768. I did set the desired resolution in the xorg file. I guess this would rather be a driver issue? I am running with radeon driver at the moment. I tried to get the fglrx from ATI but they do not seem to give any linux support for this card.

My KT4AV-based PC has burned up two GEForce 6200 cards, so I decided to try an AGP bus Radeon HD 3650.At the same time as the nVidia card went "black screen" (no video at all, not even text) my CMOS battery died.I put in a new CMOS battery and fixed up the CMOS settings as well as I can.I put in an old Trident TVGA96PCI cardnd got as far as terminal mode, but even with the xserver-xorg-video-tridentdriver already n the system, I couldn't get the display manager to run. I gave up on the Trident card becauseold and bought a new Radeon HD 3650 card and changed the display bus from PCI toAGP in the CMOS settings.
The Radeon card now also gets me only to terminal mode.tried coaxing the system by renaming xorg.conf, but that didn't help - rebooting still gets me nowhere,no new xorg.conf file. The renamed one is still configured for the nVidia card. The xserver-xorg-video-radeon driveris also present, as "sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-radeon" tells me it's already the latest version.I'm presently stuck without direct network support, as the ethernet connection hangs the computer during rebootthe message, "ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth0: link becomes ready." If I unplug the ethernet cablefor starting successfully, when I plug it back in while I'm at the command prompt, I get a message to the effectthat eth0 up and running,"ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth0: link becomes ready" messageappears again and the sytem again freezes.I have successfully pinged this PC from another on the network, but not while it's hung up at the above-quotedmessage. In that case, it's "unavailable."How do I purge the system of the nVidia stuff and replace it with an approporiate Radeon driver ?
