OpenSUSE :: Last KDE 4.6.5 Update Kills Desktop

Sep 11, 2011

I installed the new suggested OpenSuse 11.4 updates and also the last KDE 4.6.5 updates from the Index of /repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.4 repository. The result: after restart and KDE relogin I ended up with a black screen. Only two windows (firefox and dolphin) were remaining on the black desktop. I was able to switch betwen these both windows but not able to open new ones (e.g. with Alt-F2).After login with IceWM, I switched off the composite manager and made a relogin to KDE. Now KDE runs, but of course without any desktop effects. When I switch on the desktop effect I can directly have a look on a black desktop.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Update Kills ATi Drivers

Aug 2, 2011

I recently installed 10.04 on my Dell Inspiron 9300. After a clean install, the ATi drivers (for a Radeon x300) were automatically installed, and worked fine out of the box. Soon after all of this, I decided to run an update. Now, while my drivers are listed as installed in synaptic, nothing is recognized, not even the command "aticonfig" when typed in the terminal. When I try to access the Catalyst Control Center, it tells me that either I have no video drivers, or there's a problem with my card.Is there anything I can do about this? I've already tried reinstalling the drivers from synaptic.

Ubuntu :: Update Kills Keyboard And Mouse

Dec 28, 2010

I had applied all the updates available on 23rd Morning and Keyboard and mouse stopped working thereafter. The updates amounted to around 130 MBs in size. I can use the keyboard to select other items in Grub menu and it works upto the login prompt. I can change the console to Ctrl+Alt+F1 to F6 before the login screen. No response thereafter. I have set the autoloin after 10 Seconds and the notification asks me for enabling compositing.

When booted in recovery mode, the screen remains blank without the options like Repair Packages, Root shell, Resume etc.BTW, Ctrl+Alt+Del reboots the blank screen. What to do now? I thought that Reovery mode boot will give me the menu of these above items. The keyboard and mouse freeze just at login screen. So is it related to .gconfd or Gnome? Or can I unistall all the updates I had installed on 23rd December? At least how can I have the list of installed applications and my customisations in case of a reinstallation?Should I renstall and start all over again without any clue what I had done earlier?

Ubuntu :: Update Of Libc And Xorg Core Kills Ati Hardware Driver

May 26, 2010

I got the weekly updates; libc files and an xorg core file from memory. Thinking now the xorg core possibly rewrote my xorg.conf!seems to have killed the restricted ATI driver. I can boot from kernel 2.6.24.26 but 27, the one I did the updates, after the Ubuntu progress bar I get a black screen. Booting from 26 I get the low resolution graphics guff and need to set it manually each time. Go to Sys->Admin->Hardware Drivers, and sure enough, the ATI driver is 'Not in Use'. Switch it on, try booting into 27, black screen.

Phew, back to 26, change to manual config, get back in, see ATI driver is off again, leave it off and leave manual graphics resolution and config, boot back into 27, everything is stretched and out of proportion!! But I can at least get in. Switch ATI driver on in there, reboot into 27, black screen. This is pretty urgent as my wife is end of semester uni stuff and needs this machine. Worse, so am I and have even more on the plate (but at least have a computer!),

OpenSUSE Network :: New Cable Modem Kills DNS

Nov 13, 2010

I got a new cable modem so I could get rid of the one I've been leasing from the cable company. It is a Motorola sb6120. Everything is fine with the ISP, it's approved for operation on their network, the only hitch was I had to use my Windows laptop to run their activation software.

At any rate, with the new modem installed, I hop on my Linux box and go to work. I'm seeing some terrible delays in looking up names. When I look with firebug, all the dns lookups for new names are taking 15+ seconds. First I just think maybe the names aren't cached or something is weird for a minute and it will get better, but no. After several restarts and then a couple days persevering with the new cable modem, all DNS queries are still terribly slow (including zypper, mail client, web client).

Suddenly I remember an issue I was having with, I believe version 11.1 when I first installed it. For just the computer on my network with a fixed IP address, DNS resolution was slow like this and if I disabled IPv6 then all was well. I believe there was even a patch issued back then for gethostbyname() that was supposed to fix the issue? So, when I disable IPv6, DNS lookup is back to normal. The two Linux computers on my network had been working fine with IPv6 and the old modem, though, and the Windows box is still working fine even with the new modem.

I can disable IPv6 and make it fast again, but really why should I have to?

When I try to reinstall 10.04 it starts ok and sort of stops.alt cont F1 does nothing live boot or from the 500g hard drive. I also have an 80g drive with 8.04 and when I boot from that it gives me my login screen less any icons names etc.I can feel my way through the login and again no icons.alt cont F1 gives me a big unix type terminal.I've also tried with the video card removed using the default video on the motherboard, different but similar.I've also re-flashed bios, I'd refreshed it previously so this bios was working.

OpenSUSE :: Nautilus Folder Won't Open On Via Desktop Or Places Menu - Post Update

Jun 28, 2011

I recently preformed a full update to my openSuSe 11.3 x64 + gnome install. Everything was running fine before the update however post a number of features have stopped working or have changed. I used the command zypper up to update everything. The errors I've been recieving are as follows, Wastebasket

Won't open on via Desktop or Places menu. Gives the following error "Could not display "trash:" File Is Of An Unknown Type". If I drop things on the Wastebasket the files do go to /home/USERNAME/.local/share/Trash/files but I can't Empty Wastebasket upon right click as the option is highlighted out.

Computer Icon If I try to open it from link in Places menu I get the error Nautilus cannot handle "computer" locations.. The link to it has also disappeared from the left hand panel if I have a Nautilus window open.
Mounted Icons Previously I used to have 4 drives mounted;

1 network (NFS),
1 encrypted (TrueMount),
2 Windows (partitions of main machine)

Out of these only the encrypted and network drive showed on the Desktop and two Windows drives would stay mounted under /windows but have no icon on the Desktop. After the update, all these drives are on the desktop and but the only way to not have them appear on Desktop is to set Gnome config not to show any of the icons on Desktop. Although these are independent errors, they are all related to folders (at least indirectly) so I felt it was better to group them together to give a better picture of the issue.

Fedora :: Firefox Kills F13 Even In Safe Mode ?

Aug 13, 2010

On my friend's fedora 13 install, firefox was working, it seems, until the recent kernel update (kernel is now 2.6.33.6-147.fc13.i686).

After the upgrade, opening firefox would crash the system shortly after starting, so firefox was re-installed (once using rpm, once using yum).

After a re-install of firefox (using yum: firefox version is now 3.6.7) and Until a reboot, the repeated error report went something like this:

After checking to see if the flash plugin was still around and then doing a hard re-boot, however, just opening firefox immediately freezes the system.

Konqueror will run (albeit rather lamely)

In that I don't know the schedule for f13 kernel updates, if indeed the new kernel is causing this problem, does f13 save old kernels? How do I get the older kernel to start (with fc9 the option could be set in grub, or I could startx from a terminal but I have not been keeping up and am not sure how to do this.

I see there are many firefox issues lately...

Thankfully, this is easily corrected by opening the Fusion Icon and going back to Xfwm and then going back to Compiz, where I have the titlebar and frames and eye-popping effects and the whole nine yards. But it'd be a lot nicer to not have to deal with having to correct that every time I log in in the first place.

Ubuntu :: Installing Nvidia Drivers Kills?

Jun 19, 2011

Three times so far I have had to re-install ubuntu because I installed an updated or new Nvidia graphics driver for my GeForce FX 5200 The first time, using Natty Narwhal, I installed an updated graphics driver, and upon reboot, I was presented with a blank screen that did nothing. Being a first-time Ubuntu user, I assumed it was me, or a bug in the new release. So I burnt a Lucid Lynx cd on another pc, and installed that instead. Same problem when I installed a new graphics driver, again via Admin>>Hardware Drivers. Reboot yielded a blank screen. Booted from cd again, as I had no files yet to worry about, and everything seemed to be fine, providing I stayed away from that tempting hardware drivers button.

I then accidentally installed a new driver when installing the dependencies(via terminal) for OGRE (Object-Oriented Graphics Rendering Engine) This time, my terminal froze, Firefox wouldn't boot, and a reboot yielded a blinking, blank login screen that did not do anything. Obviously, I'd like to have a graphics driver, as currently I can't run anything that needs 3d acceleration (Games, 3d simulations, even Desktop effects), but it's not absolutely necessary. So if nobody can suggest a fix, short of a new computer, new graphics card etc, can anybody suggest a way that I can stop myself accidentally installing anything driver-ish? The driver worked fine on windowsXP, but there's two reasons I'm not going back to that: a) I hate it. Hate, hate, hate.b) I've lost the activation key that came with computer, so I can't reinstall.

Further detail can be provided on request. Computer is Dell Dimension 2400, 256Mb RAM, Hard drive is almost empty. Old and slow, but I like it.

Programming :: Kill Script Kills Too Many Processes?

Oct 21, 2010

User 1 and User 2 each start a mono process with sudo:

"sudo mono user1.exe" "sudo mono user2.exe"

Each user has a kill.sh in their directory, which is being called by user1.exe/user2.exe to kill the process.

The script itself is

ps aux | grep 'mono user1.exe' | awk '{print $1}' | xargs kill

which in theory should pull *only* the PID of "mono user1.exe" and kill only that. The problem: It kills any and every single instance of mono that is running on my system, every userx.exe thats open. I am confused, as a simple "ps aux | grep 'mono user1.exe'" does only return the mono user1.exe process and not the others. "ps aux | grep 'mono'" returns them all though. how I can modify that script so that it only kills the specific process? Would "pkill -9 -f 'mono MCuser1.exe'" work as well - or would it too kill every instance of mono? I cant do a lot more of trial and error, its not good I am killing those instances accidently...

Ubuntu :: Broken Prtscn Button Kills?

Jun 22, 2010

I'm keen to install Ubuntu on my old laptop (HP ze4500 2.4GHz 1Gb Ram 120GbHDD) But during installation (I presume as soon as the screen capture function becomes available) A zillion screen capture screens appear and lock up the system. It may be due to my prtscn button being missing. Actually its just the plastic part and the rubber button mechanism is still present. The button works without the plastic part completely fine in windows. That is to say I can press it when I want to use it and it works and it does nothing noticable otherwise.

Seems like a pretty trivial way to kill ubuntu, perhaps there's a trivial way to solve this problem on my laptop without replacing it? I do get through to the desktop sometimes if i carefully dont touch the keyboard and shutdown the screencapture panels as they appear. It doesnt seem to matter which method i use to get into the desktop though livecd/install alongside windows/fresh install.
