CentOS 5 :: Switch Kernel Kills Terminal

im a having a problem whit the terminal on my CentOS 5.3.After i installed the kernel-xen and activate it at:/boot/grub/grub.conf.I tried to start a terminal from my root gnome sesion and it shows this error:There was an error creating the child process for this terminal.I know swithcing the kernel made the problem because when i use the old kernel the terminal works fine.and even when i tried to connect to my Centos server via ssh it shows an error after asking for password:Server refused to allocate pty.

I just installed CenOS 5 on my server and am in the process of installing some software to the machine.
I understand repositories and was able to get it all set up for installation with the yum command.
My problem is that when I attempt the install, it says i need root access to install.
I tried using sudo commands to switch to root access, but after entering the password, it says my username isn't allowed root and that my actions will be reported.
I am the admin for the system and have total control, I just don't know how to switch to root in the terminal.

I am running an old kernel for my XEN VPS CENTOS 5.5 x86_64 - 2.6.18-164.el5xenI did a 'yum update kernel' but when I rebooted still the same. I have downloaded the version 'kernel-2.6.18-194.32.1.el5' I cannot find grub.conf in both etc and boot, yes grub is installed via yum.

Just updated the kernel to 2.6.32.22 as requested by Update Manager, and was rebooted into low graphics mode, the nvidia kernel module failed to load.I tried installing the linux-headers-2.6.32.22 but this made no difference. This could get ugly if such an early update mucks up

From F12 to F13. Is there anything I should remove before updating? I have few programs isntalled from source/binary installers in /usr for example. Would it cause problems?
And is there any chance to be able to switch from a 32 bit kernel to 64 bit kernel during the update? The hardware is capable of this.

I am using Wine to play Sim City 2k, and the game doesn't show up in the taskbar. Conky shows that SimCity.exe and winserver are both running, but I can't get to them. How can I use the Terminal to swap windows?
EDIT: Oh, great. I think a fire just broke out. I can hear the sirens, but I can't stop them! Crap!
EDIT2: You know, listening to these sirens really sucks. I had my city up to 130,000 people. I was just saving up enough money to buy an arcology when I tried to move SimCity to Desktop #2. Wine was not happy with this decision. My city is probably burned to the ground by now.
EDIT3: Ok, I just realised that I can stop the process from the System Monitor. Too little, too late I imagine. Oh well, I can probably rebuild it if I could just get to the window...

I am having difficulty with an Ubuntu 9.10 machine locking up. I have reinstalled the OS a number of times. I have the latest patches installed. I have another machine installed from the same CD that works fine. The computer is a Dell Optiplex GX260. When it locks up ctrl-alt-F1 will not switch to a terminal. ctrl-alt-esc does not do anything. ctrl-alt-backspace does not do anything. alt-sysreq-b will reboot the machine.

My laptop screen broke (smashed) a while ago and I have been using Windows with an external monitor on it ever since. My main laptop, however, runs Ubuntu 10.04 which I prefer immensely so I installed it on my broken laptop in dual-boot with Windows. Everything was fine at first, it loaded by default into a dual-monitor mode, but that was easily changed to just the single external display.
The problem was when I installed the graphics card driver (a Nvidia one). It seemed to reset the configuration to just using the laptop's broken built-in monitor. From what I can tell, there is nothing wrong with the driver as the OS seems to be running fine (from the small corner of the screen which still works). Unfortunately, neither the FN-F4 key combination (which never worked on Windows either) nor unplugging/reinserting the HDMI cable resets the screen setting to let me use the attached monitor.
So my question is whether there is anything I can do using the full-screen terminal (CTRL-ALT-F1), or a keyboard shortcut, to change monitor or go to dual-monitor mode. I would prefer not to use it to just disable the graphics driver because the laptop is a Samsung r780 and the only reason I really want to use it is its great graphics card which is way better for editing stuff and 3d tasks than the old replacement I'm using at the moment.

I recently installed Fedora 12 for some Linux testing. When I switch between virtual terminals (CTRL-f1 Ctrl-f2) I can no longer scroll back in the VT I left and came back to. Any new data created will be scrollable, but i can never get back to before the switch. I'm sure this used to work (several years ago). Was this introduced as a security feature to prevent left over data on VTs from being seen by the wrong eyes? If so, is there a way to get the old functionality back?

Graphics card is ATI Technologies Inc RV730XT [Radeon HD 4670]After fresh install of Debian Lenny VESA was used, neiher xserver-xorg-video-radeon or radeonhd worked.I installed ATI:s proprietary driver, after that there are 2 problems:
1) I can no longer switch to a text terminal with ctrl+alt+F# - it worked with vesa driver. There is no option "VTswitch" in xorg.conf
2) The new fglrx does not give 3D, also very bad performance - dragging windows on screen makes them stutter for instance.

One thing I always do is switch to the vmlinuz-generic(-smp) kernel in /etc/lilo.conf and build an initrd (see /boot/README.initrd for details). The "huge" kernel used by default is only meant for installing and not recommended for everyday use. It has a lot of drivers you don't need built-in and uses more RAM than the "generic" kernels.
still trying to find my feet and get to know Slackware. In one of my previous threads, 'things to do after installing' i was told the above message. When i installed, it used the huge kernel, but i'm unsure if that was the one that got installed. when i start slackware up, above the login screen it say, �wecome to Linux 2.6.37.6-smp (tty1)� I was wondering how to swich to the generic smp kernel, do I just change the vmlinuz to the desired, in lilo?

I am beginner in UBUNTO 10.04 LTS. I have a mobile broadband of Relience which use the device of Huawei EC 1262. I have a problem with this modem. when i installed required packages for this device like usbswitch, wvdial etc, my internet connect works fine but as i switch off the PC and restart, PC can not detect the modem, it detect as mass storage device. Is there any command/option that i switch the mass storage device into modem in the terminal window or on the GUI platform mean on the desktop screen.

One of our F14 machines was originally set-up with the i386 Kernel. I found out it had a kernel crash and the person tried to fix it by reinstalling the kernel, unfortunately they installed i686. Now some of our software that was setup to work with i386 is not cooperating. Is there a way to switch from the i686 kernel to i386 without reinstalling the system?

Initial FC12 install worked great, kernel 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64 allowed radio kill switch functionality Fn-F11 for wlan and Fn-F12 for bluetooth.The last two kernels have broken that functionality.

I have a broken touchpad primary click button so I set up the touchpad for left-handed people but when I use my wacom digital tablet, I have to switch and it's very annoying because I tend to still use the touchpad when the tablet is connected. A terminal command would help me a lot since I could alias it and I have a shortcut on my keyboard for the gnome-terminal.

after update to kernel-2.6.18-164.el5 one of the 2 NIC's of my machine are only found at 1 of 4 reboots. Using the old one kernel-2.6.18-128.7.1.el5 all is fine. This are the to NIC's:
00:0a.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
00:0b.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82557/8/9/0/1 Ethernet Pro 100 (rev 0c)
And the Intel one, makes the problems with the new kernel.

I compiled my kernel, compiled scsi support into kernel, used the new kernel and initrd, the boot failed.Then ,i unzip my initrd, found that sd_mod.ko can't be insert, i added it manual, and reboot OK.so, why! in the kernel configure , the sd_mod.ko is set to <M> , but why it can't be found in initrd?

The server runs# uname -r2.6.18-128.4.1.el5However, today I executed yum update kernel*due to security advisory. I was just about to reboot the system when I realized that it runs VMWare Server Instance that will most likely fail to restart after kernel upgrade (I had a hard time fixing it after previous kernel update). Now I want to keep 2.6.18-128.4.1.el5 after reboot.I see that new kernel is scheduled for booting:

Most of the references I've found talk about modifying the current CentOS kernel using the RPM way. I really want to have the latest kernel due to some important security issues that haven't been addressed in the current CentOS 5.3 kernel.

I have router based on CentOS system with DHCP server. In one eth I have fiber converter attached in second one I have Cisco Catalyst switch connected. From the switch rest of ports are used to provide internet traffic to rest of network. I wanted to divide each segment of network (based on switch ports) that they don't see each other (it'll be good for me if someone will connect his wireless router to the network not to WAN by LAN port and start be a second DHCP server). So my network configuration:
CentOS:
DHCP with range 10.0.0.1/8 network
Switch ports
1 - CentOS DHCP
2 - second server

Parts of networks I've assigned IPs 10.network_part.subnet_part.client_ip so I have addresses for clients: 10.1.1.2/8, 10.2.1.3/8, 10.3.0.4/8, etc ...
I've decided to give each port it's own VLAN like below:
Port / VLAN
1 / trunk

I've configured switch ports by using:
(config)# interface Gi0/Port_Number
(config-if)# switchport access vlan VLAN_NUMBER
[code]....
And after doing that whole network stopped working. I think that cisco part of configuration is OK (at least customer ports, I don't know if there is any additional info needed for trunk port). On CentOS router I didn't setup anything regarding VLANs ...

I have built a Centos 5.3 server for a friend of mine that is being used as a NAS server. The server has 4 1TB drives in a RAID 5 configuration and a dedicated non raid system drive for the OS. My friend isnt very Linux literate so I need this bow to be relatively simple. I have worked most of it out but have a question with regards to remote reboot.
I need to be able to shut this device down through the power switch without human intervention (at the moment when the power switch is pushed the server asks to confirm shutdown) the server wont have a Monitor connected so this isn't practical. Is it possible to use the power switch to do an clean, immediate shutdown?
The other option is shutdown through a web page is this something that has been done before? I know he can do it through terminal by issuing a shutdown now command but as I said this guy wants something simple. I don't really want to explain everytime he needs to shut the Server down how to do it if he can just do it via a website or even with the power button.

I'm running a Counter Strike 1.6 Game server on my centos 5 VPS. I can get it to run by simply switching to the directory, then doing: ./hltv Now, when I do that, it obviously closes when I exit Shell. So I do the following and it gives me errors then. screen -A -m -d -S hltv ./hltv My question is, do I need all of those commands after screen? I just simply want it to not close once I exit Shell.

I followed the instructions on this page ([URL]) in order to secure my sshd and prevent anyone form accessing the server directly as root. Therefore I changed the "PermitRootLogin yes" to "PermitRootLogin no" and restarted sshd. After that root access was denied directly but for some reason I am unable to switch to root from any of the normal user accounts with "su -" because I keep getting the "Incorrect password" errors. I am sure that the password is correct but for some, to me unclear, reasons I am unable to access the root account over SSH from a normal user account. I also noticed that after that I lost the ability to access the server as root over SFTP. why I am unable to generally use the root account after doing the named changes to sshd_config/ I am running CentOS 5.4 with the newest update.
