OpenSUSE :: KDE Widgets Do Not Render Correctly?

Aug 20, 2010

I installed Suse 11.3 a couple days ago. I have been using Ubuntu for the last 2 years and wanted to try something new. Everything has been working great so far except the widgets.

To add a widget, I click the icon on the right of the toolbar, click "Add Widget", and drag the widget to the desktop. When the widget appears it is stretched to the full width of the display and everything is scrunched vertically. A screenshot of the problem is below.

OpenSUSE :: Lost Widgets In Task Bar?

Aug 9, 2010

Very new installation of openSuse 11.3 on T42 laptop. I was having trouble with a persistent notification and in trying to remove it have lost several important widgets including the speaker volume, wifi connection and upgrade notification icons.I cannot identify some of these from the add widgets option. Even tried a new installation with re format of root, (but retaining /home,) thinking that I would get all back to how it was, but no, the fresh installation has the widgets still missing. Is it possible the desktop configuration is on /home partition?

OpenSUSE :: Move Widgets On Launcher Panel?

Jun 2, 2011

This question concerns the system panel/launcher panel / the panel with the launcher that normally appears across the top or bottom of the screen. The default system panel layout was nice, but, I screwed it up by accidentally deleting the task manager. I put the task manager back but now my clock & system tray are to the left of the task manager, and, I can't just drag things around. Is there a trick to organizing the widgets on this panel or is it broken? Every time I try to move something, it basically ignores me and adds it to the right of everything else.

OpenSUSE :: Plasma Widgets - Black Screen And Everything Crashes

Sep 7, 2011

I played a bit with plasma widgets and every once in a while everything crashes, I see only black screen and have to restart. After restarting everything worked normal. I found some tutorials for opensuse, and started with some basic shortcuts, such as showing active windows and activities. Then I had black screen again (which I've come accustomed to) and restarted pc expecting everything will be just fine like it was after previous reboots.

But then I saw that all activities are identical and everything I worked on has been deleted. I found in activities window that I have 20 or more activities and I didn't know where they had come from. I am stuck and I didn't see any activity that will restore my desktops to original state, and in my searching through activities I also had a lot of black screens. I use opensuse 11.4 x64 and kde 4.6.

OpenSUSE :: Sluggish After An Hour Of Usage And KDE Widgets/desktop Are No Longer Rendered Properly

Sep 26, 2010

I am using OpenSUSE for the first time. I quite like it but KDE on 11.3 is really giving me a hard time. My desktop becomes very sluggish after about an hour of usage and the KDE widgets/desktop are no longer rendered properly, with color spilling and bloated borders etc.

To give you a better idea, here is a screenshot of my desktop -[url] here's another - [url]

I suspect that this might be an issue with drivers for Intel Graphics, though I couldn't find anyone experiencing exactly the same problem as me. I am running a P4 2.4 GHz with onboard intel graphics.

OpenSUSE :: Configuring USB SSD To Mount Correctly ?

Jun 16, 2011

Comp Specs:
Dell Laptop
OpenSuSE 11.4
GNOME
2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Drive Specs:
Kingston External SSD Drive 128GB

Ok, so for the last couple of weeks I have been playing with trying to configure auto-mounting my SSD drive. But it seems SO confusing trying to get this configured correctly. Between HAL, udev, autofs, automount, auto.master file, etc I feel like I am getting more confused the more I read about it.... Not really sure how these work or how they are interconnected if at all?

First: At first when I plug in my USB SSD Drive it automatically mounts to "/media/SSD" (but this is not where I want it mounted, for a few reasons). "SSD" --> is the volume label as well.

Second: Then I tried adding this line to fstab:

Code:

When I add that line I can see during the boot message/log that it is waiting for me to plug it in so that it can mount it. Which is nice but I don't always need it plugged in at that moment. Also, after adding that line, when I plug the SSD in, it no longer automatically mounts it anywhere.

Third: Then I tried using the auto.master file to automount the drive (used this tutorial to do that --> Configuring Autofs). Added the following lines to auto.master (Not at the same time though, tried each separately):

Code:

Code:

After doing the above and then restarting autofs I saw the following as the last line of the mount command (which seems VERY strange):

Code:

Which also will not allow me to umount it? Tells me it's busy.

So basically I would just like to be able to plug in the USB SSD and have it automatically mount to "/mnt/SSD". Could anybody give me a hand with this?

Also, I would LOVE to know how these things work or how they work together (HAL, udev, autofs, etc...)

General :: GNOME Screensaver Widgets

Apr 10, 2010

Is there a way to add widgets to a Gnome screensaver? I think this can be done with KDE 4, but I've never liked KDE very much. I'm a programmer and comfortable with writing code if needed.

I'd like to be able to:

See the weather and forecast
Control Rhythmbox
Use a flash card widget for reviewing musical concepts

The reason I want these on the screensaver is that I have login restrictions. I would like to be able to do a very limited subset of activities without having to log in.

OpenSUSE :: App Windows Entirely Black When Another Already Displayed / Run Correctly More Than One?

May 17, 2011

I am using OpenSuse 11.4 (64 bits) with KDE 4.6.0. My graphic card is nVidia Ge Force 6150 LE with the nVidia proprietary 2D driver (called "nVidia" on the system information page).
A strange graphic behaviour occurs until a few days: when an application (eg Firefox) is already running and when I try to open another application (eg Thunderbird or Dolphin), the associated window is completely black except the upper bar mentioning the name of the application. It seems that this problem occurs only when an application is already running with its window displayed. It is necessary to close this application in order to run correctly another one. It is impossible to run correctly more than one application.

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Boot Correctly Without Monitor

Oct 20, 2010

I have a few machines set up to run off in the corner without monitors attached. I installed 11.3 (32-bit) on a couple of them and they run fine during setup but then I move them to the corner with no monitor attached and they won't boot correctly.

By this I mean they still run some apps I setup to run automatically from daemon scripts, but I can't ping or access the machines at all. It's almost like they aren't booting all the way up. Hooking a monitor up fixes this but I don't have enough monitors to keep these hooked up like this.

I have a couple of other 11.3 systems that are setup almost the same way but I put graphics drivers on those and they work with or without monitors attached. I don't want to have to put graphics drivers on those systems.

All this has left me with an uneasy feeling about the contents of the DVD created from the ISO. Is there a way to test the DVD contents?

OpenSUSE Install :: KDM (Login) Not Working Correctly

Jul 10, 2011

I recently installed SuSE 11.4 (kernel 2.6.37.6-0) and it all works very nicely EXCEPT for the KDM login. I am using kde 4.6.0 and have the latest updates for 11.4 installed and at install time, I left the automatic Login box checked which works ok. However, when I go to the 'Personal Settings - configure desktop' and change the Login - convenience' to UNcheck the Auto login box, it does not change the Login action - I stlll login (without a login name and password screen appearing). I have looked at the file - /usr/share/kde/config and the kdmrc file does change to read 'autologin' true (or false) when I make the changes in the configure desktop GUI, but this has no effect on my actual ability to 'login' automatically all the time!

Ubuntu :: Adding Widgets Or At Least The Date To The Top Bar In Unity?

May 8, 2011

In Ubuntu 10.10 one was able to add widgets, such as the full date (not just the time) to the top bar in Gnome. Can you do this in Unity? I like being able to quickly look at the bar and see the date (I'm forgetful) but all that is there is the time. I do miss not having the applications bar where you can look and see just what applications are running and quickly cycle between them. Right now I need to mouse over the dock (and sometimes do a little mouse dance) to open it and then scroll down it to access something that is open and happens to be at the bottom of the list. I felt that having the bar exposed was more efficient, although maybe not as elegant looking.
