Downloading acpi_battery desklet... OK
Verifying download integrity... OK

Occasionally when I start Ubuntu, all desktop widgets get skinned down. This is what it looks like when it's normal:
[URL]
This is what it looks like when something goes wrong:
[URL]
The error only occurs at startup, and happens less often than not. It has been happening for a very long time, under two different machines and several kernels for the past 2 years to be exact.I'm currently running 64-bit Ubuntu with linux-image-2.6.35-28-generic.Let me know if you need any more details about my setup or anything else.

When I uncheck "expand" in a panels properties, everything works fine. But when I restart my computer, all the panel's widgets are rearranged. I locked them all in place, but it still moves them around after restart.

In Ubuntu 10.10 one was able to add widgets, such as the full date (not just the time) to the top bar in Gnome. Can you do this in Unity? I like being able to quickly look at the bar and see the date (I'm forgetful) but all that is there is the time. I do miss not having the applications bar where you can look and see just what applications are running and quickly cycle between them. Right now I need to mouse over the dock (and sometimes do a little mouse dance) to open it and then scroll down it to access something that is open and happens to be at the bottom of the list. I felt that having the bar exposed was more efficient, although maybe not as elegant looking.

Just wondering if there's such thing where when you press a function key it dims and widgets slide in from the edges, like in Mac OS. If there is such thing what's it called and where can I find it?

Very new installation of openSuse 11.3 on T42 laptop. I was having trouble with a persistent notification and in trying to remove it have lost several important widgets including the speaker volume, wifi connection and upgrade notification icons.I cannot identify some of these from the add widgets option. Even tried a new installation with re format of root, (but retaining /home,) thinking that I would get all back to how it was, but no, the fresh installation has the widgets still missing. Is it possible the desktop configuration is on /home partition?

I installed Suse 11.3 a couple days ago. I have been using Ubuntu for the last 2 years and wanted to try something new. Everything has been working great so far except the widgets.
To add a widget, I click the icon on the right of the toolbar, click "Add Widget", and drag the widget to the desktop. When the widget appears it is stretched to the full width of the display and everything is scrunched vertically. A screenshot of the problem is below.

Is there a way to add widgets to a Gnome screensaver? I think this can be done with KDE 4, but I've never liked KDE very much. I'm a programmer and comfortable with writing code if needed.
I'd like to be able to:
See the weather and forecast
Control Rhythmbox
Use a flash card widget for reviewing musical concepts
The reason I want these on the screensaver is that I have login restrictions. I would like to be able to do a very limited subset of activities without having to log in.

My 2 year old daughter likes to "type" on the computers in the house. In actuality she is raking her fingers across the keyboard. This frequently ends up with her adding dozens of panels to the desktop and/or removing existing widgets. Is there a better way to lock the widgets that isn't easily undone with a keystroke, like a password or a settings file?

is there a way to 'hide' all 'folder widgets' from the desktop with a mouse (or keyboard) action? I mean hide as in 'make invisible', not as in 'close forever'I'm trying to mimic this Window's app: URL..., which is nothing more than a 'folder widget' for windows. The only thing that this app has that I can not reproduce in KDE is the ability to hide all 'folder widgets' with a mouse action (Fences does it with a double click on the desktop).

This question concerns the system panel/launcher panel / the panel with the launcher that normally appears across the top or bottom of the screen. The default system panel layout was nice, but, I screwed it up by accidentally deleting the task manager. I put the task manager back but now my clock & system tray are to the left of the task manager, and, I can't just drag things around. Is there a trick to organizing the widgets on this panel or is it broken? Every time I try to move something, it basically ignores me and adds it to the right of everything else.

Just upgrading to 13.0, and one thing I had in KDE 3.5 was a larger (normal) sized xterm, and a smaller sized one. The small sized ones are handy for CL scripts and don't chew up as much screen-estate.
I know I can change defaults in .xinitrc, but I don't know how to make a widget for the small xterm.

When I used Karmic, I only had to use gconf-editor to set the titlebar widgets to the left once, and they stayed there when I changed themes, no matter what theme I set. Since I installed Lucid, every time I change themes (other than to radiance or ambiance), my titlebar widgets are moved from the upper left to the upper right, and I have to use gconf-edit or to switch them back to the way they were. Why is this happening and what can I do to stop it?

I can compile and get nimbus-0.1.7 installed, but the problem is when I choose the nimbus theme (via Appearance in Gnome) the "Controls" or Widgets get unthemed, and an error displays: "This theme will not look as intended because the required GTK+ theme engine 'nimbus' is not installed." The window manager theme seems to install OK, it's just the controls.

I played a bit with plasma widgets and every once in a while everything crashes, I see only black screen and have to restart. After restarting everything worked normal. I found some tutorials for opensuse, and started with some basic shortcuts, such as showing active windows and activities. Then I had black screen again (which I've come accustomed to) and restarted pc expecting everything will be just fine like it was after previous reboots.
But then I saw that all activities are identical and everything I worked on has been deleted. I found in activities window that I have 20 or more activities and I didn't know where they had come from. I am stuck and I didn't see any activity that will restore my desktops to original state, and in my searching through activities I also had a lot of black screens. I use opensuse 11.4 x64 and kde 4.6.

I'm a total newbie in Linux and only have limited experience of programming - in Hypercard, Javascript and some Python on the Mac platform. Now I want to get started with high-level programming and scripting on Ubuntu 10.04. The project I have in mind is fairly simple: I want to create an image viewer window that I can bring up on a RAW image file in Nautilus - with the help of dcraw, to inspect the image at 100% without going into a separate application.
The viewer should have a button that if clicked, would then convert the file to a TIFF, again using dcraw. That's it, that's all there is to it. My initial impression is that I should be able to achieve this using Python and GTK widgets. Am I right? How can I find the commands and structures I will need to work with?

I installed Fedora 15 on my netbook the other day and I decided that I will remove everything but the absolutely needed to make things lighter, faster and less time/power consuming. I thought that GDM isn't needed on a single-user machine. Maybe I can remove it and have a script run on boot and take care of (auto-)loging in and starting the DE? (Xfce, but I plan switching to openbox/fluxbox and 3rd party panels/widgets etc). Is it possible? (and does it worth it?)

I am using OpenSUSE for the first time. I quite like it but KDE on 11.3 is really giving me a hard time. My desktop becomes very sluggish after about an hour of usage and the KDE widgets/desktop are no longer rendered properly, with color spilling and bloated borders etc.
To give you a better idea, here is a screenshot of my desktop -[url] here's another - [url]
I suspect that this might be an issue with drivers for Intel Graphics, though I couldn't find anyone experiencing exactly the same problem as me. I am running a P4 2.4 GHz with onboard intel graphics.

I have KDE 4.4 and Firefox 3.6. Whenever I click a link from a plasmoid widget, it tries to open Konqueror and another instance of Firefox. The page actually loads in the opened Firefox window, but the task bar shows an instance of Konqueror and another instance of Firefox, that keeps loading for a while then close. See image below:
I currently have setup the browser default application as "firefox". If I set this option to use the default application, it opens in Konqueror and I don't see additional windows in the task bar. If I change the option to "firefox %u", then it exhibit the same issue, but the process is much faster, so the loading windows don't stay for long in the task bar. Additionally, it opens the link on a new Firefox window and opens the page twice. Although Konqueror is not loaded, the bouncing icon next to the mouse pointer shows up and stay for a while.

When originally installing 11.04 I had problems getting my Ralink 5390 wireless card to work.
Today my computer froze completely and I had to turn it off via the power switch. When I turned it back on, wireless was no longer recognized! My iPod can connect to the network just fine, so it must be an Ubuntu problem. There are no problems with my ethernet connection either.
I researched this and found several threads about blocking and unblocking wireless devices using the rfkill command. Well, unfortunately for me the rfkill command doesn't work. When I type sudo rfkill list or sudo rfkill unblock all, nothing happens; it just returns me to my bash prompt. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling rfkill...nothing.

I have been looking around the forums searching for similar problems, it seems not only me had this problem. About a month ago I did a regular update via Upd Manager. The next day - no wired connection.Still managable, since the local library has wireless. Now that won't work either.Just after I upgraded from Jaunty, I accidentally removed NetwMngr from the top right corner of the screen, but that should not have anything to do with how the program works, right? I now cannot reach NM, if I run it from the terminal, nothing happens visibly.

I installed it on a Dell Inspiron 531 with the GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 built in video card. From the recommend driver list I installed NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) [Recommended
Well, turns out it should not have been recommended. I had restarted and all I got was a low res ubuntu logo and a boot right into a full screen terminal. Tried startx and got a no screens found, I look online for about an hour last night and decided to just reinstall, which takes a couple hours when installing all the packages.
I have done more research today and found to install the latest linux x64 driver from nVidias website, which I did, but it does not run. I followed some more instructions and it said to do a sudo chmod +x <file> which I did, and it starts to open and I get You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before installing.
Im starting to get a little frustrated here, guess Im just used to a lot of the ease of windows and assumed that something like installing a graphics card driver would be easy.
