Ubuntu :: Editing The Grub Startup Menu To Take Out Some Of The Previous Versions

Jun 12, 2010

I'm interested in editing the Grub startup menu to take out some of the previous versions of Ubuntu. First, is there a reason Grub keeps the previous versions available to boot to in that list? If it is just in case of a problem with the new installation wouldn't it make sense to only have the most recent previous installation? Anyway here is the problem, when I run: Code: "gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst"

The editing program opens the file named "menu.lst" but the file is empty. How is it possible for this file to be empty yet I have multiple boot options and they all work? Does anybody know what I am running into here?

Ubuntu Installation :: Removing Previous Versions After Updating Kernel?

Sep 12, 2010

I have looked for existing threads on this issue, but found no matches, so I am starting a new one.I first installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop from a bought CD last year. When I later installed the kernel updtates with the Update Manager, I noticed the the list of versions growing when I booted up. Then something horrible happened. After installing maybe the third or fourth kernel update, I couldn't boot into Ubuntu, it failed every time. After that I left Ubuntu broken on my laptop for a while.I have now reinstalled from the CD again However, I am now very wary when it comes to installing even the important security updates, never mind the recommended ones! I prefer to keep it simple, because I don't want to do any more reinstalls for a while. So far I have just one kernel headers update on the boot list, and I am trying to figure out how to remove the previous one. I do not see the point in having a growing list of them again.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Upgrade And Fresh Install Can't Connect To Previous Versions?

Jul 17, 2011

I upgraded my Ubuntu server install to 11.04 and could not connect to anything outside of it. Its a weird issue because if I run a ping against it as its booting up for about 20 seconds or so I get responses, then it says unreachable. (This is a wired connection by the way). If i login fast enough on the server itself I can ping google for instance and get a response, then it just stops and says host unreachable from that point on.

I then decided to setup a fresh install on the system (virtual server) and I get the same issue. All throughout the install it connected fine, just up until it fully restarts. Its like some service starts that just kills the connection. I rolled back to 10.10 on my other instance and it can connect fine.. Ive been trying everything I can find on the forums but I am pretty stumped by this,

Wanted to make sure I added safe repositories, and why these changes?

ps. i checked some websites and seems like it is installing alpha/beta versions. so since it is not working now - how do i revert to previous versions without losing data, and how do i install thunderbird 3.0 then.

Ubuntu :: Why Older Versions Of Ubuntu Are So Much Faster?

Mar 26, 2011

I would love to use ubuntu 5.10 on computer with 1GH CPU, 384 MB RAM and NVIDIA FX5200, It just flyes, the problem is canonical doesn't support this version anymore(I can find latest packages on some remote reps, but these versions although latest for 5.10 are OLD) and it is impossible to use more or less decent software Is the slowdown reason - kernel? And linux distros getting slower? Or is this a reason of Ubuntu developers?

Fedora :: Lyx Bugs Or Window Manager Bugs?

Jun 30, 2011

I find that the FC 15 Xfce spin will save the user's current session except that it doesn't save what is being done with the Lyx editor. Under FC 15 Gnome 3, I found that after I added the minimize-maximize-close buttons to the top of windows, that some of the windows in Lyx (such as the one that appears for View as DVIPS) didn't respond to those buttons. (I don't remember whether Gnome 3 saved the Lyx session and I've gotten rid of Gnome 3 now.)

OpenSUSE :: Where To Post OpenOffice Novell Edition Bugs

Jun 7, 2010

today I had (once again) a bad experience with the Openoffice.org version shipped with OpenSuSe 11.2 (in this case OpenOffice.org 3.2.1 OOO320m19 (Build:9505) ooo-build 3.2.1.3) which is labeled stable. In calc, double borders (format --> cells --> borders 1,1pt) disappear after saving and reopening. After almost getting crazy and reactually onlyformatting the same spreadsheet far to many times, I realized I was not too stupid hitting the save button and decided to install the plain vanilla version (as I had done on a previous version on my laptop due to another novell edition bug I cannot recall.) Luckily the plain vanilla version has not this bug. However, since I like some of the features the novell edition offers (namely colored tabs and .xlsx export support) and I generally prefer installing software through repositories where possible, and of course because it is my duty as an opensource user. I would like to know were to report a bug that is specific to the version of a program shipped with OpenSuse.

I have a strange problem with sound, or maybe It's ok, I dunno. The problem is. The first launched program that uses sound, "takes over" the sound or smth, anyway, all programs, started next, just not play sound at all. The only solution is to close all programs using sound and start one I need to "listen". When I get into sound settings menu and see the list of programs using sound, I see just one started first.

OpenSUSE :: Keyboard Shortcut To Switch To Previous Window

Apr 20, 2010

This is probably a silly question but I couldn't yet find the answer and I guess someone else must have solved it already, so... How can I activate the keyboard shortcut ALT+SHIFT+TAB to switch to the previous window (As opposite to ALT+TAB)?I'm using gnome, I went to the keyboard shortcut panel, but I didn't know how to add a new action (one that is not already there).I also use another distro (Mandriva) on another computer, also with gnome and that key combination is already there, which is very useful for me.

OpenSUSE :: Restore Evolution Data From A Previous Version?

Aug 25, 2010

This is to request assistance or information as to why the evolution application will not accept the evolution-backup-tar.gz file from a previous version.

Situation: I upgraded by way of a fresh install from openSuSE 11.2 to 11.3 (GNOME desktop).
Before upgrading, I produced the above mentioned backup file so that I could import all the mail, addresses etc. into the new application.

Result: it does not work. The process starts up seemingly normal but then simply sits there forever with the message "evolution shuts down" - but it does'nt. I have to kill it to stop it.

I am looking forward to a resolution since it would be a real pity if I lost the mail history.

Ubuntu :: Difference Between LTS Versions And Other Versions?

Jun 30, 2011

I'm not to clear on the difference between LTS versions and other versions, but think I may want to go with LTS. Can someone tell me if my thinking is correct given the following situation: I have some very cool, but very expensive software installed with a group license from my school, a school which I am not going to be attending for too much longer. So I want to go as long as possible without reinstalling Ubuntu, because once the product is licensed it will be licensed until I reinstall Ubuntu (or I uninstall the program). So I think this is going to require me keep the Ubuntu version I install as long as possible.

So in this case, should I go with 10.04LTS or should I just install Natty Narwhal and keep that as long as possible? It looks like 10.04LTS will be "supported" longer, but I'm not exactly clear on all that "supported" entails. Presumable it means security and software updates will be available for 10.04LTS for much longer than 11.x versions? So I'm thinking I should go with 10.04LTS

Is my thinking correct in going with 10.04LTS? Edit: It was pointed out that this would be against my contractual agreements. Which I suppose is probably true.

OpenSUSE :: Change Gnome Desktop Icons Back To Previous Settings?

Jan 15, 2011

I have recently played around with Mac4lin a program to change the interface to one that resembles a Mac computer. I did not like the settings then decided to uninstall the program. It reverted to a really ugly looking gnome desktop rather than my previous settings. One thing that I don't like is that I have a foot icon on my gnome traditional menu button on the panel rather than the green ball type icon I used to have. I know it's not the end of the world that my icons do not look like it previously did, everything else is running smoothly, though I'm just more annoyed than anything else.

OpenSUSE :: How Does Decide Kernel Versions To Update To

May 19, 2011

I checked my kernel version (uname -r) and see I'm on "2.6.34.8-0.2-default", and I noticed that they just released 2.6.39. I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that there's been at least versions 2.6.35/6/7/8 released in there. Why isn't my openSUSE 11.3 using anything more recent than .34? How does this updating work? Is 11.4 on a more recent one?

that's it! I got OpenSuse 11.2 and the size of the Repo has exceeded the 4 GB limit. This means that the mirror doesn't fit on my USB-stick anymore, nor would it fit on aDVD-RAM/RW (thus I can't distribute the updates anymore). Yes, there are bigger USB-sticks and BR-RWs, but in the end it is pure insanity!
