OpenSUSE Install :: Repo With Only (symlinks To) New Versions?
Aug 13, 2010
that's it! I got OpenSuse 11.2 and the size of the Repo has exceeded the 4 GB limit. This means that the mirror doesn't fit on my USB-stick anymore, nor would it fit on aDVD-RAM/RW (thus I can't distribute the updates anymore). Yes, there are bigger USB-sticks and BR-RWs, but in the end it is pure insanity!

i'm attempting to know and understand fedora more and i will spend probably the next month pouring through all the forums and documents to answer more of my own questions. but there's quite a bit here, so i'd thought i'd ask some noob questions to get me started a little.
ive installed fedora 14 64bit and chosen only kde as the desktop. i selected an extra 2 repos besides the default, fedora 14 -x86_64 and fedora 14-x86_64 -updates. i believe this kernel is installed: 2.6.35.11-83
1. i can only see the 2 extra repo's as being "checked" in kpackagekit, shouldn't i see the default repo also ?
2. i dont have an applet in the system tray indicating the system is up to date, does fedora have this by default ? also after a clean install i ran yum check-update and yum update but the message sayes: "no packages marked for update". i'm not sure if the system is auto-updated during install or not, but with other distros iv tried there is always atleast a few updates needing to be done after install.
3. is kpackagekit the fedora gui package manager ? i dont see any others.
4. i want to upgrade to nvidia drivers, but i think i am missing a non-free repo or something. when i enter: yum install kmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686 xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.x86_64 i get messages stating "no package" i get the same message with yum install nvidia-settings.i also tried this: LANG=C yum --enablerepo=rpmfusion-nonfree info akmod-nvidia but it sayes repo not found.

1. I have dual booted Suse and Win Xp in past. Can idea be applied to different versions of Suse? I have a working Suse11.2 , and I have a spare partition (15GB) which can be re-formated.
2. Can i do a clean new install to the spare partition? Thus ending with two working Suse versions? ( Separate /home partitions). This would allow a) reserve of a working system while checking that 11.3 works. Then remove 11.2 later , and how to do that.

I tried to install on an Armari Gravistar machine Open Suse 11.3 and 11.2 at 64 bit but both haven't worked, after the welcome I press install, it loads something and then the computer is on the screen black and nothing happens. The 11.3 at 32 bit installs but in this manner I cannot use the 16GB RAM of the machine.

I'm having trouble installing the latest openSuSE 11.2 32bit using NFS. The issue appears during the text-interface, before switching to the GUI. The first strange thing I noticed after mounting the ISO is the change in User/Group-IDs. Earlier versions don't do this:
Code:
# mount ./openSUSE-11.2-DVD-i586.iso /images/suse11.2 -o loop
# ls -lah /images
dr-xr-xr-x 7 root root 6.0K Dec 1 2006 suse10.2/
dr-xr-xr-x 8 root root 6.0K Jun 10 2008 suse11/
drwxr-xr-x 8 98 98 6.0K Nov 6 16:21 suse11.2/
drwxr-xr-x 8 98 98 6.0K Nov 6 14:14 suse11.2_x64/
When starting the installation process on the client system I get a "No repository found" message. Checking the error console (Alt+F4) shows:
Code:
SQUASHFS error: Minor/Major mismatch, trying to mount a newer 4.0 filesystem
SQUASHFS error: Please update your kernel
Older Versions (11.0, 11.1) are working OK. This error is suspicious since it remains after deactivating the NFSv4 in /etc/sysconfig/nfs and commenting out the NFSv4 export lines in /etc/exports.
Here's my /etc/exports:
Code:
/images/suse11 *(ro,root_squash,async,subtree_check)
/images/suse11_x64 *(ro,root_squash,async,subtree_check)
/images/suse11.2 *(ro,root_squash,async,subtree_check)
/images/suse11.2_x64 *(ro,root_squash,async,subtree_check)

I just installed openSuse 11.2. I added extra repo's like packman and Mozilla. I gave them priority level 80. The normal openSuse repo's have priority level 99.Still, Yast does not show newer versions from Packman or Mozilla.Yast completely ignores the prioritylevels of the repo's.The only time Yast shows packages from other repo's, is when they are not in the default repo's, like XMMS,w32codec-all, etc.So the repo's are added in the right way,but something strange happens in software management.
When I search for firefox, it shows the old version 3.5.6-1.1.1.When I click on the tab versions, I see that version 3.6.0-1.2 is there from openSuse buildservice. Why is Yast not showing the higher version (available) in the mainscreen? When I select it manually, Yast complains about dependancies because it is not aware of newer versions of mozilla xulrunner.

If I disable the repo-non-oss repository the update works fine. The URL I have for the repo-non-oss repository is:
Index of /distribution/11.0/repo/non-oss
This has been going on for over a week. Do I need to use a different URL for the non-oss repository? I live in New York, United States.

I have 2 machines running 11.1, but using 2 diff KDE repo sets . . .
On the first, I am using /KDE:/43:/openSUSE_11.1 as listed under the KDE 4.3.x section of the KDE repo's page. The installed KDE version is 4.3.3-3 but yesterday this repo was updated to 4.3.4-1. The corresponding repo for 11.2 now also has 4.3.4-1.
On the second, I am using /KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.1. Installed is 4.3.3-128, the most current. This is the same version as in the corresponding 11.2 repo.
IIRC (and I very well may not) for those of us who wanted to go to 4.2 (and later, 4.3) it was first advised to use the /KDE:/KDE4:/Factory set, but later it was advised to switch to the /KDE:/43:/ set.
In any event, since 4.3.3 is officially released by KDE and considered stable while 4.3.4 is not, it would appear the upgrade path should use /KDE:/KDE4:/Factory/11.2 (which is counter-intuitive to me, given the "factory" nomenclature; on the other hand, the "43:" section is not accurately described, so perhaps that's the problem).

The repository [URL] is not currently (or no longer) valid. The path still exists up to the "Contrib" level, however, there are no files or subdirectories under it. There are also two siblings at the "Contrib" directory level ("Live" and "Update:") and there are no files under them either other than a single subdirectory called "Test" under "Update:". Does anyone know if the updates that used to be available in this repository have moved and, if so, where to? If the repository is no longer required and there is no replacement, I'll simply remove it. I have also noticed issues for several months where the updater applet will go into an "updating" state and never return from it.

I'm wondering how I would go about dual-booting Ubuntu with openSUSE installed first?
I'm just a little bit concerned about the versions of Grub overwriting the openSUSE version or theme or something.
Would it work okay if I just shrink my openSUSE partition and then set the Ubuntu installer to install Ubuntu to the free space only or do I need to edit the grub file and stuff?

Following the Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide (11.2), I could see that I can avoid installing the VLC repo and execute the rpm command that installs a VLC-related rpm. I prefer executing the command from the terminal instead of installing the repo, because that it feels safer. But I installed suse11.2 64bit, which IMHO makes the libdvdcss version i386 to not be taken to it's full potential. (It's better to install a 64bit version of the libdvdcss package). What is recommended: installing the repo or using the rpm command (all this repo issue is new for me, so naturally I prefer to avoid it, but eventually I'll need to use it...)

Currently I have the latest stable KDE packages through two repositories:
Code:
KDE-KR46 | .../repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.4/
KDE-Extra-KR46 | .../repositories/KDE:/Extra/KDE_Release_46_openSUSE_11.4/
The priorities are:
KR46: 75
Extra-KR46: 85
Now the issue is about the openSUSE 11.4 Updates repo (priority 99). It shows newer packages version than the KR46 repos for some packages, therefore I'm not sure if I have to push Updates repo up in priorities or just forget its update messages an keep the KDE repos as first source.

If I download the whole www folder to my hdd for example: from [URL] to /mnt/repos/oss/ and replace in package manager source [URL] with local one file://mnt/repos/oss will this work as it works from http server? What i want to do is to backup chosen repos before my linux release will be not supported anymore.

Come across these repositories when looking for packages not included in the standard repo.
Index of /repositories/security/openSUSE_11.3
Index of /repositories/openSUSE:/11.3:/Contrib/standard
what these repositories are for? Are they part of the official/maintained by openSUSE repository?

What is the significance of the no key message. How can I renew keys from repo sites and what should I do about the Wrong Digest warnings?

unix extensions = No
wide links = Yes
follow symlinks = Yes
I've added them into my OpenSUSE smb.conf (below) but still no joy.

I wasn't paying proper attention when adding a repo to yast and need to find the file were the info is saved to delete this. The problem is that whenever i use yast it comes up with an error code saying that it can't find the data for the 'problem' repo. Have tried zypper rm but that comes up with a similar error advising that the data is in a format that was not expected. My thinking is to track the file were the yast repo source details are saved, delete this and then just add the repos that i use back.

So my netbook has overall very generic intel hardware Atom processor and Intel Graphic card the only component that requires a proprietary driver is the broadcom wireless card (unfortunately brcm40821 does not work for me) I am running opensuse 11.4 and I am willing to update the broadcom-wl driver each time there is a new kernel update in tumbleweed I am just wondering as of now, how stable is Tumbleweed (anyone has had any problem or success with tumbleweed, welcome to share in this post)
PS: I read (in the announcement/news section) with the new kernel (2.6.38-18), samba is finally working fine alongside apparmor.
