OpenSUSE :: Java Programs Grouped Incorrectly On Panel
Feb 26, 2011
I primarily use IDEA for my Java development work, however, I sometimes use Netbeans for stuff like GUI editing. When I have them both open in KDE 11.3, they get grouped together in the application panel instead of being separate.I think that this is probably due to them both being java applications. Is there anything I can do to separate them?

My gnome-panel is at the left side of my screen (I use the 'splendid' cairo-dock at the bottom of my screen). But when more than eight windows are open, the dock freezes. The 'Computer' button works, as well as the tray icons. My CPU rushes to 26% constantly. Solution is to kill gnome-panel and it reappears without complaining (if few than 8 windows open).

This is an intermittent problem I am having. AWN now groups similar application windows under the same icon. I've been waiting for this for a while. Problem is sometimes, if I need to select an application from a grouped list, I click the icon, the list pops up, then as soon as I move the pointer onto the list, the list disappears.

from the links I have read it seems like you have to manually download the lastest sun java from sun.com and then excute some commands to get firefox to use sun java rather than openjdk. It seems stupid having to update sun java manually. so is there a repo for it so i can update sun java with yum like all other programs?

I'm trying to install a program which requires Java VM. The installer is a install.bin file, coming with a eclipse folder; in this folder, you can find a "jre" directory. I also installed Coconut Java virtual machine, as well as OpenJDK Java 6 runtime environment. However, I still can't install the program. Executing the installer gives me this error message:
Code:
Preparing to install. Extracting the installation resources from the installer archive. Configuring the installer for this system's environment. No Java virtual machine could be found from your PATH environment variable. You must install a VM prior to running this program. I think I should make Java VM available to the installer somehow, but I don't know how. I tried searching online but couldn't figure out the answer. Please help.

I printed Bruce Eckel's book "Thinking in Java" and Bjarne Stroustrup's book "Programming Principles and Practice Using C++". They are just great.I installed Fedora 14 with java development features including Eclipse IDE.Now I want to be able to recreate the examples from the books and experiment over them in Eclipse.I have been working for a while with python and django merely in the terminal and gedit without Eclipse. Please, help me to get started. How can I write my Java or C++ programs as projects in Eclipse?

Do you know how to write programs that use electronic signatures in JAVA (although I am not pretentious about the language in any way).
When I say e-signatures I mean those USB smart cards(security tokens) that are capable of doing encryption by themselves and store securely the private key. I am particularly interested in how authentication works with a digital signature, how to sign data, and most importantly how to check that a digital certificate is valid. What do I need to store in the Database for authentication for example -- is it the serial or the Hash?

I accidentally deleted my panel that showed the active programs. I don't know how to get that back. Also, I had another question on top of that one. How do I get it to where the OS doesn't show the desktop when I move the mouse to the bottom left of the screen?

I was trying to customise my desktop, and I disabled gnome-panel as I don't need it (and auto-hide wasn't working). Now when I boot up I can't open anything as the "run" dialog using alt + q (changed shortcut from alt + f2) doesn't load, nor does the terminal via shortcuts. I'm using Compiz, and disabled nautilus drawing the desktop so Compiz could do it for me.
Do you know what I can do to get this back or to get the "run" dialog to open again? EDIT: Skype ran as start up, so I got a friend to send me a link, which opened my web browser. I then downloaded a file, and viewed it in nautilus which meant I could get to the terminal and run gnome-panel from there. I can now get it back easily when needed. Do you know if there is a way I can get the "run" dialog to work without needing the gnome-panel running?

Lucid now has a 'feature' of clogging up the bottom panel, showing open programs twice [normal mode, on the left, compact mode on the right], can this be disabled?
I've attached a screenshot of what I mean, in case I'm not completely clear: see the compact open program thingy's right next to the workspace switcher.

I just freshly installed 10.04 (migrated from 9.10), and the first thing I noticed is that in my bottom panel, the applications crashed ("quit unexpectedly") right after the first boot: the workspace switcher simply disappeared when I tried to change its preferences, and "Show Desktop" crashed without me doing anything (I got the little popup window that allowed me to reload or not). Now, I reloaded them and they're there, but none of my open programs appear in the bottom panel.

I do not use Empathy or Evolution, the default programs used by the messaging panel notifier in GNOME. Rather, I use Skype and Thunderbird for all my needs. Is it possible to change the settings in the panel notifier to use these programs instead? Otherwise, the notifier is completely useless to me and I'd like to remove it individually without removing any of the other panel notifiers that I do use, which is what happens when I right click it and choose "Remove from panel."

If I try opening a folder from the menubar or any other programs, it doesn't work. It does work when I run nautilus from the terminal and, oddly, try to open Computer from the menubar.

I use openSUSE 11.4 64 bits, KDE and FireFox 5.0. I regularly update. When trying to reach my bank, I get the following error: Code: icedteanp plugin error: Failed to run /usr/lib64/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk/jre/bin/java. For more detail rerun "firefox -g" in a terminal window. Is there anything I can do to remediate ? Does IcedTea everything that Java does?

230Gb HD, I recently partitioned a 90Gb slice, and ran 10.10 on it for a while, but due to not using it, I fired up gparted off a live disc last night and got rid of the partition. I got Gparted to make a 5gb swap, and the rest for 10.04, all is fine, rebooted to 10.04, updated grub, it removed the entry for 10.10, but reports that my hd is only 140gb, and sda2 is a 5gb swap. What gives? Where's my disc space?

Running Slackware 13.1
Whenever I insert a dvd or a cd, it automatically mounts to /media/[name], Like for example, the DVD I have in now mounts to /media/TBC3.2.0 (TBC3.2.0 is the name of the disc itself).
I'm needing this to mount to a regular point like /media/cdrom0 or whatever. How can I fix this?

I have an computer that mounts an external hard drive for backups. The Computer hard drive is about 110 GB; the external drive is 120 GB.
When I do a df -h it tells me there is 97% in use.
Checking the computer harddrive I am using about 52.8 GB (of the 110 GB) 501,579 items, totalling 52.8 GB (some contents unreadable)
The external drive is using roughly 49GB of the 120 GB available.
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/xanadu-root
114536088 104995108 3768692 97% /
udev 1030572 328 1030244 1% /dev
[Code]....
It seems like the total % is a reflect of total space consumed calculated off of ONE of the hard drives.
