General :: Ctrl+C Incorrectly Mapped In Ubuntu 10.04 LTS?

Jul 11, 2011

I was playing around with my keyboard shortcuts and accidentally mapped a command to the Ctrl+C shortcut. Now I can't stop programs running in the terminal with Ctrl+C and I have no idea of how to restore this functionality.

Ubuntu :: Map Ctrl+W In Hebrew Layout(which Is Actually A Ctrl+') To Be A Ctrl+w?

Jan 5, 2010

I have 3 layouts: USA, Russian and Hebrew. In Hebrew the W key is mapped to apostrophe, so Ctrl+W in Hebrew layout doesn't close tabs in Firefox. There is no workaround for it as I see by now, so I am trying to get it work this way:I want to map Ctrl+W in Hebrew layout(which is actually a Ctrl+') to be a Ctrl+w. Here is what I got from xmodmap:Code:$ xmodmap -pke | grep 25keycode 25 = w W Cyrillic_tse Cyrillic_TSE apostrophe WAs you can see, there are pairs for each layout, each pair tells what happens without and with the Shift key pressed.

Ubuntu :: Freezes Mouse After Changing A Tab (with Ctrl+tab, Alt+#) Or Closing It (ctrl+w)?

Nov 11, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 x64 and already am really annoyed by Firefox, which freezes my mouse after changing a tab (with ctrl+tab, alt+#) or closing it (ctrl+w). After about one second, i can continue working as usual. Changing Tabs by just clicking on one does not freeze anything...Maybe some of you would think now if I am crazy because of complaining about such a little thing, but it is really annoying if you are used to work fluently with ff.Edit:I today noticed, that not only shortcuts in firefox, but all Hotkeys freeze my mouse for a second. For examle ctrl+c, ctrl+v, super+e or anything else.Do you have any Idea what causes this behaviour? Reinstalling ubuntu didn't change anything

General :: VirtualBox On Wubi Ubuntu Can't Start VMs Due To Incorrectly Handling Absolute Paths?

Jun 27, 2011

I mostly do .Net development in a Windows 7 virtualbox. I use the host for simple things such as web browsing, skype, chat, etc. All things that are fantastically available on Ubuntu which I in many ways prefer. So this has been begging the question for a while: why even use Windows on the host, seems like a Linux host would use less resources (untested) and allow my Windows VMs to run better while allowing me to do my non-development stuff in an interface I prefer.

So easiest way to do this - I downloaded wubi and installed Ubuntu. I installed in it Virtualbox, and then start add and start my VM to get this message: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine VS2010, Could not open the medium '/host/Users/George Mauer/Virtualbox VMs/VS2010/C:/Users/George Mauer/.VirtualBox/HardDisks/VS2010.vdi; VD: error VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND opening image file '/host/Users/George Mauer/Virtualbox VMs/VS2010/C:/Users/George Mauer/.VirtualBox/HardDisks/VS2010.vdi; (VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND).

You see what's going on? With wubi, the windows drive gets mounted at /host/ but virtualbox is for some reason appending an absolute path! I would very much like to use the same exact VM file since it would retain Snapshots and I would be able to use it in either windows or Ubuntu mode. However, even if I try to simply mount the drives into a new VM I get an error: Failed to open the hard disk /host/Users/George Mauer/.VirtualBox/HardDisks/VS2010.vdi. Cannot register the hard disk '/host/Users/George Mauer/.VirtualBox/HardDisks/VS2010.vdi' {guid...} because a hard disk '/host/Users/George Mauer/VirtualBox VMs/VS2010/C:/Users/George Mauer.VirtualBox/HardDisks/VS2010.vdi with UUID {guid...} already exists.

This is especially odd since this worked fine with my recently created Android VM, though this might have something to do with the fact that VirtualBox recently changed their default VM storage locations. Any idea how to fix this? My Linux-fu is weak but I seem to remember from CS class something about symbolic links that might be relevant here?

General :: Windows - Why Does E-mail Render Incorrectly Only For Certain Recipients - When Use A Certain Server

Mar 11, 2011

This has been driving me absolutely crazy for a few days now. I have an e-mail. If I send it from a Windows Server 2003 server via MailEnable, a certain person receives it using Outlook 2003 just fine. If, however, I send the exact same message from an Ubuntu 10 server using SSMTP to relay the e-mail to the exact same MailEnable queue, the recipient receives a messed-up-looking e-mail. There are all kinds of "= " all over the place. The exact same e-mail looks fine on my Ubuntu computer, as well as my Mac, and all of the Windows/Mac computers here at work. Here is an excerpt from the copy they receive:

COMPANY has been communicating with COMPANY as they Agency worked to develop the= COMPANY permit, knowing that this would impact aquatic pesticide applicat= ion. But in December, COMPANY advised us that the COMPANY permit would = also cover any pesticide applications made "on or near any water or water c= onveyance." They described a scenario in which a pesticide applicatio= n made in a field or pasture that had a waterway or ditch in it (even if th= e waterway or ditch was dry) would need a COMPANY permit. This meant th= at the majority of pesticide applications made to crops would need a COMPANY = permit, and would have to comply with all the burdensome paperwork requirem= ents plus all of the pesticide application records would be available to th= e public for review.

What on Earth is happening? I'm using PHP's Mail_Mime to send the mail, if that matters.

I have tried testing this on an in-house netbook, running XP and Outlook 2003, same as them, and it looks fine. Unfortunately though, it's happening for more than one person, with different companies, in different states. Is it maybe an Outlook thing? Or a firewall?

Here are the headers they sent me, when I requested them earlier:

OpenSUSE :: Ctrl+z And Ctrl+c Do Not Work Without A Third Keystroke

Feb 3, 2010

I just spent a few days ripping out all the broken/buggy apps that are in the opensuse 11.2 official repos so I can finally get working software(openoffice, thunderbird, wine, eclipse, rubygems, rails, and a few others required getting the "official" versions from their respective websites to avoid strange behavior and outright broken functionality).

All of which makes updating more annoying and time-consuming. Why are opensuse packages so different anyway? Anyway, the last thing that I have noticed to fix is Konsole. For some really bizarre reason ctrl+z and ctrl+c do not work without a third keystroke: enter.Maybe this is something new with the KDE team, since they seem bent on making simple things that already work more complex, but given my experience with crappy packages in the suse repos, I am thinking this is the problem. I have looked over all the config settings that I can find and nothing fixes this affront to productivity.

Ubuntu :: Two Keys Mapped As The Same Thing?

After pissing around with Kubuntu all evening, I wish I had hair to pull out in screaming frustration. After trying everything from Xbindkeys to animal sacrifices and voodoo spells to get my multimedia keys working, I now find that both the Windows key and the End key are mapped as F14. Problem is that it's the End key opening the K Menu, not the Windows key.

How can two keys get mapped as the same thing?! And how do I get the End key back to just the End key? I'm close to calling it quits on Linux and putting Windows back on my laptop.

General :: F3 - F5 Keys Incorrectly Behaving As Audio Keys / Remap Them To Original Meaning?

I don't know if this is a configuration issue or a hardware issue, but I have a Kinesis Advantage USB keyboard and for some reason the F3-F5 keys aren't responding as they used to. Any idea how I could remap them to the original meaning?

Ubuntu Servers :: Nfs4 - Idmapper / Some Uids Are Not Mapped To Names?

Oct 5, 2010

i set up a ubuntu server (10.04) with LDAP, Kerberos and NFS4. Did a set up for a client (ubuntu desktop 10.04 32 / 64) to connect to ldap, kerberos and nfs4-mount. All is working fine except of the idmapping. Some uids are not mapped to names. the entrys, which cannot be mapped, change. so 10 minutes before the uid was mapped to the correct name, after that time (i'm not sure if it's exactly 10 minutes) the name is mapped to nobody. sometimes the gid cannot be mapped too.I mount the nfs-share via nfs4 with sec=krb5 (krb5i or krb5p result in the same problem) and after successfully mounting the device, i type ls -la. i never have problems with getent passwd or with logging in as ldap-user. i get all the entries of the ldap-db and i also get kerberos tickets. All is working fine with nfs3, but i would like to use nfs4 for security-reasons.

if i run the rpc.idmapd with many "-v" i get the following messages in the daemon.log-file:

Code:
....
rpc.idmapd[15953]: nfs4_name_to_uid: calling nsswitch->name_to_uid
rpc.idmapd[15953]: nss_getpwnam: name 'test@DOMAIN.TEST' domain 'DOMAIN.TEST': resulting localname 'test'
rpc.idmapd[15953]: nfs4_name_to_uid: nsswitch->name_to_uid returned 0
code....

the first part is the response to a correct name-to-uid-mapping the second part is a failed one. both user exist, both users have the same ldap-entries (except of the different descriptions, uid and so on). the responses have the same timestamp, so the reply is in (nearly) the same second.

restarting the idmap-daemon every 5 minutes or other workarounds are not practicable in normal operating environment.

Debian :: File Sharing Via Mapped Directory ?

Dec 13, 2010

My friends and I want to have a central server where we can share our files. I would like it to be accessible to each client (friend) by simply logging onto their VPN client and have the shared directory appear on their "My Computer" as a hard drive. It will be a Debian Lenny server that is accessed by Windows computers, and they'll be able to read and write whatever they like.

We do this same thing at work, but I don't know where to start. To access the file server at work from home, I just run our VPN client and I have access to all the drives I do at work. This is exactly what I'd like to do, but at my place. I'd like to know what applications I need to get to make this realizable, like if I need to use Apache, Samba, OpenVPN, etc. I can learn fast, I just need direction.

Eventually I want to evolve this project into something more, but I figured this would be a good starting point in learning server applications.
