If I try opening a folder from the menubar or any other programs, it doesn't work. It does work when I run nautilus from the terminal and, oddly, try to open Computer from the menubar.

Lucid now has a 'feature' of clogging up the bottom panel, showing open programs twice [normal mode, on the left, compact mode on the right], can this be disabled?
I've attached a screenshot of what I mean, in case I'm not completely clear: see the compact open program thingy's right next to the workspace switcher.
I just freshly installed 10.04 (migrated from 9.10), and the first thing I noticed is that in my bottom panel, the applications crashed ("quit unexpectedly") right after the first boot: the workspace switcher simply disappeared when I tried to change its preferences, and "Show Desktop" crashed without me doing anything (I got the little popup window that allowed me to reload or not). Now, I reloaded them and they're there, but none of my open programs appear in the bottom panel.

When i go to places and try to home folder, desktop, etc with a mouse click, Nautilus does not open. Instead a really old looking program called textedit opens. The only thing that doesnt cause textedit to open is clicking on computer.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was trying to customise my desktop, and I disabled gnome-panel as I don't need it (and auto-hide wasn't working). Now when I boot up I can't open anything as the "run" dialog using alt + q (changed shortcut from alt + f2) doesn't load, nor does the terminal via shortcuts. I'm using Compiz, and disabled nautilus drawing the desktop so Compiz could do it for me.
Do you know what I can do to get this back or to get the "run" dialog to open again? EDIT: Skype ran as start up, so I got a friend to send me a link, which opened my web browser. I then downloaded a file, and viewed it in nautilus which meant I could get to the terminal and run gnome-panel from there. I can now get it back easily when needed. Do you know if there is a way I can get the "run" dialog to work without needing the gnome-panel running?
I somehow messed up the file association of the panels.... Alle Folders in the "places" are linked to vlc media player.... except the "Computer" icon If I drag a folder on the desktop it opens with nautilus as it should I remember that i wrote somewhere manually "vlc..." to associate a videodvd, that worked too well I deinstalled vlc, but i only get an errormessage then " cant execute child process" so its still linked to vlc.....

As such, the files aren't easily accessible.How might I ensure that downloaded files are visible on the screen and not 100px above & behind it? Perhaps related, I've got a second monitor attached to the laptop (primary). It seems this second monitor's resolution is affecting where downloaded files are put...out of sight.
Primary laptop: Dell Vostro 1310. Resolution = 1280x800
Secondary monitor: Acer 19-inch LCD Flat Panel. Resolution = 1280x1024.
I've tried all the settings in Monitor Preferences to no avail. Searched Google without luck. Currently on Ubuntu 10.10 and the system is (according to Update Manager) up-to-date.

Sometimes, power point presentations will crash the program and then I can't open any open office programs without rebooting the computer. The problem seems to be just with powerpoint files and I'm not sure what the issue could be.

It's gone off the System Tools menu, so I can't right-click it and say 'add to panel'. The desktop Computer icon has no such option.I shouldn't have to show desktop and then click on Computer to see a file manager window. How do I get this icon back (more importantly, why was it removed)?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI do not use Empathy or Evolution, the default programs used by the messaging panel notifier in GNOME. Rather, I use Skype and Thunderbird for all my needs. Is it possible to change the settings in the panel notifier to use these programs instead? Otherwise, the notifier is completely useless to me and I'd like to remove it individually without removing any of the other panel notifiers that I do use, which is what happens when I right click it and choose "Remove from panel."
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have 2 drives formatted NTFS, which I'm mounting with /etc/fstab to ~/Movies/ and ~/Music/ and an EXT4 partition on my primary drive for games, mounted to ~/Roms/ and I would like for these drives to NOT show up in the side panel of nautilus.
I've been doing some looking around, and what I've found so far is that supposedly if you mount a partition/drive somewhere besides /media/ nautilus will ignore it. I'm finding this not to be the case, and it's driving me bonkers. here's my fstab:

I primarily use IDEA for my Java development work, however, I sometimes use Netbeans for stuff like GUI editing.When I have them both open in KDE 11.3, they get grouped together in the application panel instead of being separate.I think that this is probably due to them both being java applications.Is there anything I can do to separate them?

I have some adlib music files I want to be able to double click from Nautilus.. the command line program that will play them is adplay.. However, if I just do that, then when I double click, the music plays, but no way to stop it!I tried "gnome-terminal adplay --output=oss" as the custom command but it doesn't seem to work.. I need it to open the terminal with adplay so i can stop the music when im done, since there's no GUI front end for this program..ALSA is the default for this app, but it skips horribly, and OSS was the only output device that works..

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using Gnome on 10.10 and use hotkeys (shortcut keys) for opening just about everything. When I go to System>Administration>Preferences>Keyboard Shortcuts and enter a shortcut to open Nautilus (file manager) it doesn't work.
The shortcut key I have set for this (Mod4-m or Windows key+m) works fine if I replace 'nautilus' with 'thunar' or 'pcmanfm' as the command, but when I use 'nautilus', nothing. The same shortcut key works fine to open Nautilus in Xfce. If I type 'nautilus' in a terminal in Gnome up she pops. I can stick just about any other command in there and WinKey+M will work fine.
My regular setup is with Xfce where everything is dandy but I am fairly curious as to what Gnome has against Nautilus in the shortcut key menu.
My gnome-panel is at the left side of my screen (I use the 'splendid' cairo-dock at the bottom of my screen). But when more than eight windows are open, the dock freezes. The 'Computer' button works, as well as the tray icons. My CPU rushes to 26% constantly. Solution is to kill gnome-panel and it reappears without complaining (if few than 8 windows open).

View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen i was in Windows, i had absolutely no problem creating and running basic terminal C++ programs. I came to Ubuntu, and now I've got a big problem: I can't run any program that i make. I have tried making programs in Code::Blocks, CodeLight, MonoDevelop, and NetBeans. All 4 four are free IDE's from the ubuntu installer. I've created 4 programs, 1 on each, and they're all the EXACT same program. When i build it, they build just fine and run. When i release and compile it so it becomes an .exe program, i can't open it. I find the thing, double click, and nothing happens. I rightclick and choose Run, and nothing happens. I made a basic Hello World program, and i couldn't even run that. Is there an extra thing im supposed to install to allow me to run .exe or something?

View 4 Replies View Relatedmy X server restarts and boots me to the log screen when I start programs. I recently took the Nvidia card out of my computer and put in an ATI card. This is of course after uninstalling the Nvidia drivers through the restricted drivers interface. This worked out very well but eventually I went back to Nvidia. I removed the ATI drivers put in the Nvidia card and installed/selected the Nvidia drivers just as I did when I did this the other way previously. However now when I start just about any program the entire X server boots me back to the login screen.

For some reason it's as if it's completely forgotten it. After searching for nautilus, i didn't see one single file that looked like it was the main part of nautilus to link to, there was a myriad of files to choose from and i thought it'd be better to ask here and quicker than to try each one out myself.
