So for ive changed the dns on my home router to Opendns and ive added this What does a dns attack look like? how would i know is my dns was poisoned or if i was under a kaminsky style attack?
View 9 RepliesI always use VNC to check my server for updates, and this morning I started the xvnc4viewer to vnc into my server and it keep asking for a password. I never setup a password because I do this local from my laptop, and I am the only one who uses my laptop. I had to go to my server and check the setting in System > Preferences > Remote Desktop and found them all changed. There was a password setup and there was a check mark in the you must confirm each access to this machine there some security update that changed all these setting? Sometimes when I do updates I don't know what is being changed on my server

Everything worked fine until I tried my weekly rsync backup.
The permissions seemed to be causing problems, so I recursively changed all the permissions in my home directory:

Im wondering about proxy servers, see it is like this: I got banned from a samp server and i can't get my ip changed (it's not the local address it's the one all the computers in my house shares) I searched a little bit and discovered that a proxy server would be the best option. If I have it in some one else house I will get another ip right? Is it possible to install some software on my laptop and just use that? and how do I do that? Btw I found this: [URL]. after this i cannot boot says cannot boot ,nautilus cant find home folder etc &more after doing alt-ctrl-f1 and doing login i can find my old home folder with all inside the point is how i can change to my old home folder -have to find the solution in order not to do format again i use ubuntu desktop edition on an acer aspire one netbook with ssd 8gb -

I switched on my machine this evening and the first thing I noticed was the home icon in the unity launcher has changed, then I noted then I noted that the window switcher icon, power-off icon and me icon in top right are also different.
On starting nautilus (clicking on home icon) it looks more like thunar (although about says its not). A screen shot showing "nautilus-thunar" and the desktop is attached.
Firefox's minimize, maximize and close icons have also changed - see other screen shot.
Anyone got any idea what's going on? Anyone else have this.
As it stands I have a small home network operating behind my modem/router. Some of the ports on this are forwarded to my PS3 for gaming but I was looking at forward some for my file server.
At the moment I've forwarded port xxx22 to port 22 on my server for SSH for instance. ANd similarly 21 for FTP (although it doesnt seem to want to connect for any more than a few seconds using that). What I was thinking of doing was placing a small website for a handful of ppl to use on the server too and port forward again - xxx80 to 80. It works just fine but I'm a little concerned on the security front.
As I've moved the port to something different from the outside world I'm presuming I will have already cut the potential for malicious folks to wander in but is there anything else I should be doing? At the moment there's no firewall operating on the server, usually as its hidden behind the modem/router. But if I open this thign up more permanently what should I be doing? I've read a few articles on it but I'm always left with the overwhelming thought of "Thats if theres no firewall in my router" as they just seem to do the same.

Set up Gufw to defaults and now am not sure what I am seeing with iptables.
iptables -L shows .....
Do these settings look correct for default settings for Gufw? or do I still have some problems with the old firestarter settings not being removed. All I want is all ports stealthed. I know that ping is enabled but I believe that is a default setting in ufw. Could I restore iptables to default with:

and then enable Gufw and set default?
I have read that to improve security in Ubuntu a good fix is to make the /home folder tree non-executable by default. This would mean that malware could not run in the /home tree without changing the setup.Is this a viable change, or is it just icing on the cake, any one any thoughts on this.

My question is: how can you protect against this? I see this as a security hole.I understand that the user must have physical access to the computer, but if I want to lock the system down so you cannot easily enter single user mode or the root password cannot be changed.
I'm wanting to set up a network. I'm still confused as to how to set it up. I think the easiest design is to have a switch on my border router.n this switch will be the servers. Also attached to this switch will be a Linux box. This will be a dedicated firewall. On it will be another switch. And the machines on the internal network will be attached to this switch. In the book "building Internet firewalls"(o'reilly) this set up is described as a screened subnet architecture. However the external interface on the Linux dedicated firewall will have to get it's I.P via dhcp (192.168.1.*) from the border router.
That or it can be a static I.P on the same subnet as the border routers dhcp range 192.168.1.*(but outside the dhcp range) but that would be trickier.The internal interface of this dedicated firewall would be static and on a different subnet as the external interface (192.168.2.*). Then this internal interface could give out I.Ps to the internal network that are on 192.168.2.*. If it did N.A.T for packets from the internal network then N.A.T would be being done twice; once by the Linux dedicated firewall and once on the border router, before going off to the net.Or is it a better approach to NOT do N.A.T on the Linux firewall and have all I.Ps on the whole network assigned as static(outside of the border router's dhcp range, but all on the same subnet(192.168.1.*))?.
Basically is there any point in the Linux box doing dhcp and N.A.T for hosts on the internal network?. I guess the answer is no. But i just wanted to hear your opinions, if you have the time. The border router is a home router. nted to have a normal triple-homed dedicated firewall and put it in the border router's DMZ but it proved unpredictable and tricky. So i just wondered what the best I.P addressing scheme would be for my newer way.
I've read that using your computer behind a router is a must for security because of the NAT+SPI firewall so naturally I became interested in getting one. The thing is, I don't need the other features routers have because I don't do wireless, & I only use one computer. So do I really need one? Do the security benefit(s) gained from using a router warrant spending $50+?? Wouldn't using UFW with default deny rule offer the same level of protection?
Also I want to use my Playstation3 online. What security risks will I be taking if I connect it straight to my modem, instead of through a router?
I just changed my password now every time I start my computer the keyring wants my old password and it keeps doing weird things even after I type it in. Like Ubuntu will say No keyring found or something to that effect anyway.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I set up an ID in Ubuntu, I encrypted it. I did a print screen of the passphrase and put it on the desktop. I'm just learning how to use the encryption so don't fault me for putting it right on the desktop. There is no important data in this ID. Now, I went and changed my password to the account. On the next boot, I got a few error message:
Could not update ICEauthority file /home/mickymouse/.ICEauthority
There is a problem with the configuration server /usr/lib/libconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256 In researching these, it looks like the problem is that I changed the password but didn't update (or something) my passphrase.
I can't boot into the GUI but I have figured out how to boot to a command prompt. I don't have access to my home directory because I don't have my passphrase. Am I toast or is there a way to recover / update the passphrase?
I am running a Fedora 10 Virtual Server and get have a feeling I have been hacked. I needed to fix a source file that I had definately not changed myself. It was a PHP file concerned with usernames and passwords so that made me even more suspicious. I have been investigating and found the following. If you need other information give me the command I should run and I will update, I am no expert in this area and use the server to host my website and SVN. I am the only person that has access to the server.

After seeing a few articles on making a home router I thought "I'll have a go at that" as I've spare bits and bobs lying around. Now apart form some iffy wireless cards one major problem sprung to mind. Clearly there will be 2 NIC - 1 in and in my case one out. And that one has to be wireless. But I've yet to find a ready built one (is Smoothwall or the like) that will allow me to do this with a wireless network card in the machine.
Firstly is it doable as all the traffic in my house is wireless. Secondly are there any ready built distros that will handle it for me.

I opened Mozilla Firefox connected to the router, but a 'home.asp' application - an interface one can to set up a configuration - running on the router didn't work properly. When I tried to change some settings, and eg. clicked a confirmation button nothing happened. I solved the problem staring Windows and making a connection using IE - this time that home.asp application did OK. The question is what may caused problems? A bug in this app or in general *.asp applications don't communicate well with browsers other than IE or simply they don't 'like' Linux?

I obtained some old PC and I've installed debian linux on it. Now, I have onboard ethernet slot (10/100) and net works fine. Into PC's usb slot I've plugged Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0bda:8189 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187B Wireless 802.11g 54Mbps Network Adapter and I want to know is it possible to transform this PC into wireless router for home use? If so, what do I have to do?

Anyway, my internet has been working fine until recently (last week or so). For most sites, Firefox will load the page quickly. However, every once in a while, but frequently enough to annoying, it will say "loading" for 10 seconds, then direct me to OpenDNS, which says the page cannot load. When I try it again, I get the same problem. Other sites are fine.
Then, when I quit Firefox and restart it, that site will work fine, but soon enough, another site stops loading properly.
For example, Google will work fine for awhile, then I'll get the error, but after restarting, Google will be fine again, but now Wikipedia, which loaded before, gets the error. And the cycle continues on yet another website...
I haven't changed any Internet or network settings recently. I'm on Ubuntu 10.04.
For the second time in a week, I have set up an unmanaged CentOS 5.5 Storm Server at StormOnDemand, only to discover a ton of unauthorized changes to binaries (updated file checksums and sizes) on the server shortly thereafter.The time stamps do NOT change.If the time stamps did change, I would be hunting down ahat was doing some auto-updates. But the time stamps are not changing.This leads me to believe that either these servers are suffering from:1. A virus or hacker is compromising the box.2. system corruption.3. Something else? To eliminate the possibility of number 1, I toasted the first server and started over with a new server and enabled their firewall from the start to only allow access for two IPs via SSH... my IP and my biz partner's.
Then, one of the first things we installed was a system we created that maintains a snapshot of most directories on the system so that it can be used to watch the live directories for changes. At 4:07am (server time) this morning, we received notice from this system that a massive number of files had changed in these directories. Again, no file time stamps changed.So, my question is this... is there any legitimate reason in a fairly standard CentOS 5.5 install that would cause so many files to change?
i have instaled ubuntu 11.04 wubi on my pc with windows 7. i installed and everything was going ok i navigate on ubuntu already. but the problems star here i went on my ubuntu to the partition section and i format my windows partion to be the home partion and changed the nfts to ext, i did the upgrades but i forgot that theyr running yet and i restart my computer when it boot again it gaves me an error:

and the windows7 says that i have to instal again. so i went to another pc and i made a cd boot and a pen boot. i burned the iso (downloaded from the ubuntu oficial site the 11.04 32 bit version) image to the cd and pen drive prperly, i adjust my boot options to star from usb or cd rom and nothing im struck.
