OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Login Under An Username

Apr 25, 2010

Been using 11.2 for a couple of months now, mostly I've solved my own problems or read from some preexisting already solved problems on threads like these. But, I'm not even sure where to start with this one. I cannot login under my main username, the account is set to autologin, and I get the login screen instead. When I attempt to login I get a black screen for about a second then it bumps me back to the login screen, no error messages. I'm able to login under runlevel 3, but as soon as I try to "init 5" it bumps me out and back to the login screen.

Root account works fine, and I used it to create a secondary account from which I am posting from right now. The behavior started after the system put the display to sleep while I was watching a movie in VLC, I woke it up just as it turned completely black, it hung there and I was forced to hard reboot. Had the problem ever since (for several hours now, lol).

I use Gnome but I installed KDE to see if it would resolve my problem, but no dice.

OpenSUSE Install :: Username Order On Login Screen In 11.2?

Dec 2, 2009

I just moved from openSUSE 11.0 to 11.2.

While I like to new login screen (I was using a face based theme previously), I am stumped on how to control the order that the user names are presented.

As best I can tell, they are presented in the order who logs in most frequently. While that makes a certain amount of sense, I would like to be able to force the list to remain alphabetical.

Is there any way to control this, and if so, where?

Ubuntu Servers :: Users On The Machine Can Login Into Vsftpd With Their Username And Password On The Machine And Go To Their Root Dir "/home/username"?

Nov 3, 2010

I recently installed vsftpd on my server. I noticed that users on the machine can login into vsftpd with their username and password on the machine and go to their root dir "/home/username".Now, I want to give some people a vsftpd username and password so they can upload and download files and folders to their folder, but this folder has to be in the "/var/www/(username)" folder. I don't want them to be able to go to any other folder than their own folder like "/var", "/etc" or "/home" etc. Also I don't want them to be able to login on the machine as a user, through putty for example. They should only be allowed to acces their folder with vsftpd, nothing else.

OpenSUSE Network :: Network Login Starter - Set Up A Server - Centralized Username And Password

Jan 21, 2010

I'm new to networks and servers, been using Linux on the desktop for a while now but always relied on the company's IT guy for setting up everyting LAN-based.

Now I want to build up my home LAN, and want to do it with Linux. I've managed to set up LAMP and file share servers.

What I am looking for is information on what I need, and how to set up a server for the following tasks:Centralized Username and Password, that when the user logs into any one of the desktops in the LAN, it uses this for authentication

Something that allows this authentication to be utilized in other servers (file access, web access, router logging, etc.). Something to make it easier for continuing permissions from one service to another. e.g. I have IPCop filtering content, and it has provisions for tracking who is making which request if there is authentication going on. (optionally) to run a script for mounting Samba shares or mapped network drives so from one system to the next. For example, in whatever box somebody logs in, it mounts a server share ("smb://Myserver/users/<username>") to a local folder ("my_user_share").

So;user "fred" ="smb://Myserver/users/fred" and user "wilma" = "smb://Myserver/users/wilma" but both would find their respective one mounted under "~/my_user_share". This would be irrespective of which box they are loggin in with. If the server share location changes (new server/servername), I change it on the server so the next time they log in it points to the right place.

I guess it is similar to Window's Active Directory, though I'm not sure what it's called, how to configure it and what it is and is not capable of doing.

OpenSUSE Install :: Remove (not Hide) A Username From KDM?

Jun 2, 2010

I know how to go through KDE settings to "hide" a user from the login screen but I want to know where KDM is getting this info from. I've installed OpenSUSE 11.2 x64, configured it the way I like, and now I would like to clone it. Problem is that I logged into my own account while testing FreeNX and now my username shows up on the login screen. I want to remove any information that I logged into this system with an account other than root. I've Googled many times and still have no idea. I currently have two local users, root and user. The rest of my users authenticate and login via LDAP. The name of my LDAP user account is now always displayed on the KDM login screen. I don't want to disable the user list either, I just want to remove my account from the list before I clone the machine.

OpenSUSE Install :: Pam_ldap Username Case Sensitivity On 11.2

Sep 8, 2010

It seems pam_ldap in 11.2 is not case insensitive anymore when it comes to checking usernames with uid from ldap.It is working fine on 11.1 though (both systems with latest updates up to now)(I didn't try 11.3 yet)On our ldap server (which is out of my control), the usernames are not unified, some are all in lowercase and some are capitalized, but on our Linux servers we have all usernames in lowercase.

Since our upgrade to 11.2, the users that their uid on ldap server does not match exactly to the username on Linux servers can not login anymore. Is there any option to change this behavior and force pam_ldap to be case-insensitive or convert uid/usernames to lowercase?
or all of a sudden pam_ldap decided to become case sensitive!?

Debian :: Safest Way To Change A Username / Login Name

Apr 6, 2010

I would like to change my username (or login name) and am wondering what the safest route to do so is. The install is on a headless server, which I just use ssh. There's a) using usermod -l newname oldname. The line in the usermod man that says that changing the login name doesn't change anything else, which makes me think that something else is bound to break. I've also considered b) creating a new user, moving the contents of my home directory to the new user, and deleting the old user. This is kind of cumbersome, but would this be the recommended way to ensure everything goes well (considering I still have to redo some config files).

OpenSUSE Install :: Crash Back To Login Screen After Login?

Feb 3, 2010

The graphical login screen is loaded just fine. Though very shortly after (a moment after the loading screen could be seen) it crashes back to the graphical login. And that happens no matter what wm I'm trying - gnome, kde3, kde4, e16, e17, even twm.

It happened after the logout after a zypper up yesterday morning. Looking through the list of what packages were upgraded (two machines, both last zypper up'ed last Sunday, checked on the second one after the problem with the first one), the only packages which might be responsible are kwin or qt4.

The graphics card seems to be fine (NVidia 9600), as it happens whether or not I use nv or the propietary driver. Also tried reinstalling it from the repo as well as using the binary blob from NVidia. Has been tested on Windows and games are running fine there, so it shouldn't be the card.

What is strange, is that when calling upon sax2 -r from runlevel three, the initial screen loads nicely, but sax2 crashes back to the cli once one presses 'Change Configuration'. No error messages are being printed.

Any pointers on how I can narrow down the cause (and get it fixed)?

Packages:
OpenSuSE 11.2 + KDE 4 factory & enlightenment & qt 4.6 repos
X.Org 7.4-35.3
Kwin 4.3.98-406.6
libqt4 4.6.1+4.6.20100202-1.1

CentOS 5 Server :: Vsftpd: 530 Incorrect Login Regardless Of Username Used

Aug 14, 2009

I am attempting to connect to VSFTPD via Filezilla from a windows machine, but regardless of which user name I use I get a "530 Login incorrect" error. I have tried turning off the firewalls on both the CentOS and Windows side of things with no result. I disabled the SSL/TLS commands in the config file, also with no change. I tried a couple of different FTP clients, but got similar results regardless of which client I used. I have been going over man pages and documentation for a couple of days now, but cannot come up with an answer. I suspect it lies in my configuration, but I got the same results when I reverted my config file back to the original. what else I can do? One other note is that I am attempting to connect via a LAN, at this point I don't care if it works across the WAN as I only intend to use it to upload files to my web server.

Ubuntu :: Login Cycle Loop After Username / Password Entered

Aug 12, 2010

The login cycles- I already have a problem with mounting something connected with USB (long term minor annoyance, but everything works), but suddenly I cannot log in. When I put my username and password in, the screen flashes black for about half a second, then the login screen re-appears. If I put the wrong password in, I get an authentication error message (as expected) without turning black and then cycling again.

I have no problems going into terminal mode and logging in. I've tried all sorts of suggestions related to this problem- reinstalling ubuntu-desktop, apt-get clean, sudo startx, and the last indicates that x-windows is already running. I've found a couple more things to try, but I'm not too sure how well they'll work. It seems to be connected with x-windows, but I don't know what is causing it. Last night I had a big problem that required reinstalling nautilus (couldn't set up a connection to a remote server), and that problem was fixed- but this developed when I booted this morning.
