I have been reading up around the internet that although it is possible to use MSTSC.exe under Windows XP to connect back to a Suse machine running XRDP (I believe).I had been working fine with Suse 11.0 until today. I had not made any changes to my local network but now whenever I try to connect in, I am told that I can not start the session as the sesman logon fails!
I tail'ed /var/log/messages but there is nothing written to that log when I try (interestingly enough, I do get the logon prompt that requests username, password and session type - I usually select KDE3 but have tried all options - and get the error after clicking OK).
My questions:-
1. Is XRDP under 11.1 any better (more stable as when it worked, I use to get kicked out a lot under 11.0)
2. What log file should I be trying to tail so I can see what is happening?
I must use Linux as the back end, I don't want to use a hacked copy of XP anymore and don't want to pay for a real version when Linux is free and should by now be able to grant me access to my network from a remote location!VNC is not an option as I will be wanting to log on more than one user at the same time.

I looked in YAST it appears everything is installed on my 11.3 machine to remotely view another desktop what I am missing is how I set that up on both ends. The desktops I want to view are on the local network. A Windows 7 64 machine and a openSUSE 11.4 machine.Does anyone have experience setting this up?

Just a few moments ago I got notified by the remote desktop application that someone logged in. As I have not given out my remote desktop information to anyone it has to be some sort of attack. I immediately rebooted and I noticed erratic hard drive activity. A few applications with 'tracker' in their name were causing major cpu load so I killed them. Right now my computer is not logged into the Internet so it's probably impossible for any more of my data to leak out.

I may have to work in another state for some time, and I'd like to access my home machine desktop remotely, like this: Server - home machine, oS 11.4 64-bit, KDE 4.7, 1920 x 1200 screen (currently set to 24-bit color depth), 1 Mbps upload speed, behind a Dlink DL-524 router I manage.
Client: laptop, oS 11.4 64-bit, KDE 4.6.5, 1280 x 800 screen (also 24-bit color depth), unknown up/down speed - probably huge at work, crappy at apart hotel. I'd like to keep the server resolution, if possible, even if the client's is smaller. I want to be able to star/stop KDE apps in the server, move files between folders, and fix the issues that only happen when my wife is at the keyboard (it's a machine conspiracy, she says ). So I'd need to connect to the server's current session/user (which is myself, i.e., same login/password).
What do you recommend for this? I've read Swerdna's tutorial for 11.2/11.2 (a million seen malcomlewis xrdp 0.6 packages for 11.4 (you rock, malcomlewis!), as well as this thread: RDP into OpenSUSE 11.2, however most seem concerned with rdp between windows and linux boxes. Is there something better/faster/simpler for oS-to-oS RDP or should I use xrdp all the same?

I have to work in a computer that uses Suse 10.3 from another computer that uses Windows. What I am looking for is for some programe that works most similarly to windows remote desktop or logmein. What I mean is that I want is to see my actual desktop, not to log as a new user (when I do that I loose my work when I log out)As I said I new at this so it would be great if you could recomend me some easy program to do what I need and with a detailed tutorial.

I have my main box, Ubuntu 10.04lts, and I am trying to use remote desktop viewer to see the desktop on a Windows XP machine. The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. But, I cannot ping the XP box from the Ubuntu box, and Remote Desktop Viewer won't establish a connection to the VNC server I have running on the XP box.

I have VMware server installed on this machine. I also have a Windows XP VM running all the time. I have it bridged so it gets a valid IP from my router and such and is in my network. I use KRDC to remote desktop to it and I make it full screen. However if I want to go back to my desktop I have to minimize KRDC.
Is there a RPD client out there I can use so I can go full screen on 1 desktop and have everything else on another desktop then use KDE's Desktop switcher or ctrl+alt+arrow keys to switch between desktops to flip between Windows XP and Linux without having to minimize?

I mount the shared drives (on a Windows Server 2003) and I can access them from my home directory. Everything is mostly fine. But I also get desktop icons for the shared drives, which I don't like since I prefer a bare desktop. Sometimes I have deleted desktop icons from /usr/share/dist/... but these are not there.

I have ovpn configuration files for Windows from SwitchVPN. They do not provide configuration files for GNU/Linux. They said I can extract the certificate and key files from the ovpn files, but I'm confused about how to do that.First of all, I don't know which Authentication Type to choose: "Certificates (TLS)," "Password," "Password with Certificates (TLS)" or "Static Key."
Second, I don't know what to put where from the ovpn file. I see a <ca> </ca> section and a <tls-auth> </tls-auth> section, but I don't see how those correspond to any of the Authentication Types. "Certificates (TLS)" and "Password with Certificates (TLS)" require two certificates and a key, "Password," requires one certificate and no key, and "Static Key" requires a key and key direction but no certificate. When I connect to SwitchVPN in Windows, it asks for a user name and password. Here's an example of the ovpn files (certificate and key contents removed):
Quote:
route-delay 3
fast-io
client
dev tun
[code]...
how to get what I need from the ovpn files, and which Authorization Type to choose in the Network Manager VPN configuration GUI, and what to put in the blanks?

I use KVpnc and openVPN to connect to my desktop at work from my laptop at home. This works fine, I can reach my desktop at the office from my laptop at home. The only problem is that when the Vpn connection is active I cannot use a browser on my laptop. In fact, I cannot connect to anything outside the office Vpn (like mail, chat etc).
I suspected it had something to do with the DNS servers at the office not being reachable from the Vpn so I added my "regular" DNS servers to the /etc/resolve.conf used when the Vpn is active, I added two lines in total on the form "nameserver <ip-address>". This did not solve the problem. I have searched the KVpn forums without finding anything, and the same goes for the openSUSE forums. Does anybody else experience the same problem?

I have freshly installed OpenSUSE 11.3 64 bit and reimported my old openvpn connections via Network Manager. Connection can be established fine, but after 3 to 6 seconds (pings) it will stop to receive any packets on the tun device.
I tried disabling the firewall, starting openvpn manually, no avail. I checked the message log and the openvpn output, no messages recorded.

I've run into a bit of a problem with an attempt to remotely admin a friend's computer. Here's the basic layout:
--My Ubuntu is connected via wireless router, port 22 forwarded properly. I can ssh in and out as I please to other hosts.
--Across the internet, their Eeebuntu is behind a router as well. Port 22 may or may not be properly forwarded. Nobody in that house really knows how to access their router. (I accept this may be an issue I'll need to handle)
What I'd like to do:First priority, ssh access to the remote Eeebuntu.Assuming the remote router does not forward port 22, would I be able to have the remote computer remote forward, say my local port 10022 to remote 10022, thus allowing me to ssh user@localhost:10022 and bypass the need to access the router?
Lower priority, prepare a bash script for my friend to download that would require one input of the root password, and go through the full process of installing OpenSSH, setting up the server, and initiating contact to my computer. The ideal situation is allowing my friend to start the computer, run one script, type in one password, and walk away.Any ideas for better remote admin options are welcome, as well as comments/suggestions from anyone who has attempted this backwards form of ssh access.

I'd like to remote into my Linux (Ubuntu) desktop from a Windows desktop. Of course there is VNC, among others. The trick is that I just want to have a remote session without having any local screen sharing. In other words, when I type and move the mouse on the Windows computer, I don't want that activity to show up on the screen remote Linux system. The Linux box should just sit there at the login prompt or whatever it was doing prior to my remote login.

I have a remote network that I manage consisting of a DLink DFL-210 firewall/router, and behind that a Dell server running openSUSE 11.2 and a collection of Windows XP/Vista/7 computers.
The Linux box is running OpenVPN as a server (that is how I connect to this network) and a client (it connects to a second server - running XP - at a different location).
The DLink router is the DHCP server and provides addresses on the 192.168.51.0/24 network. The OpenVPN server provides the 10.8.51.0/24 address range.
The remote network that the Linux box connects to is 192.168.54.0/24 via the OpenVPN network 10.8.54.0/24.
I have added routes to the DLink router to route all traffic to the 10.8.51.0/24 and 192.168.54.0/24 networks to the Linux box.
With SUSEFirewall turned off, after I have connected via OpenVPN from my remote computer I can ping all active 192.168.51.0/24 addresses. Other computers on the 192.168.51.0/24 network can ping computers on the 192.168.54.0/24 network. But if I turn on SUSEFirewall, neither of these work. However, I can ping 10.8.54.1 from any computer on the 192.168.51.0/24 network.
How can I set up SUSEFirewall to allow these networks to communicate with eachother?

I know I can use Terminal Server RDP v5 to do remote desktop support for Windows boxes - but would like to use something that is easier to use - for the Windows user. Is there a package that allows the user to sign onto a web site and then I can take over their Windows box using my Ubuntu box? Or is there something else as simple without me having to walk them through finding their IP, making sure their firewall isn't blocking me, etc. etc. I would love to show my clients that I can do almost everything with Linux instead of Windows.

I'm trying to set up a machine without a monitor. It has a video card in it but it won't have a monitor connected.Basically I want to press the button on the front, it boots up and I can remote desktop onto it from my main machine. I'm assuming this means it needs X.The problem I have is that with no monitor attached, it boots but complains about "low graphics". I only see this complaint after I re-connect the monitor cable. My remote desktop from the other machine works fine until I come to shut it down whereupon it just sits there presumably waiting on the display that's not connected for someone to fix the low graphics "problem."
Is there a way to stop it moaning about low graphics? Or, better yet, have a machine without a video card at all yet still be able to remote desktop onto it? Is there some kind of virtual framebuffer version of X I could use that would allow this?
