OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Create Repository?
Aug 12, 2010
I am trying to add a few additional repositories to SLES 11 64-bit but I can't seem to get them added. I am trying to add Index of /repositories/server:/database but I get the error "Unable to create repository from [URL]... Try again? So I browsed that repository and then tried to add Index of /repositories/server:/database/SLE_11 but still got the error message with this new URL listed instead. I tried just the 11.2 repository and it worked - Index of /distribution/11.2/repo/oss/suse.
How or what do I need to do in order to get Index of /repositories/server:/database added to my repository?

I have a small installation problem with openSUSE 11.2 I have read the relevant stuff in the forums for new users. I have downloaded openSUSE-11.2-DVD-i586-iso and verified the file using MD5. I am currently running windows XP (SP1) on a Fujitsu Siemens V1000 laptop andI am trying to install linux from my hard drive and not from a DVD drive.
The path to the downloaded file on my windows partition is: e:/OpenSuse/openSUSE-11.2-DVD-i586.iso I have initialised installation and selected sda6 as the partition where the sourcefile is located. and when prompted for the directory, I typed " /OpenSuse/openSUSE-11.2DVD-i586.iso " The installations then proceeded through to "Initialising Package Manager" upon which I get the following message:
" Unable to create repository from url' iso:/? iso=openSUSE-11.2-DVD-i586.iso&url=hd:/OpenSuse?device=/dev/sda6"
DETAILS: Failed to mount iso:///?iso=openSUSE-11.2-DVD-i586.iso & url=hd:/OpenSuse?device=dev/sda6 on: Unable to find iso filename on source media.
History: - File:/openSUSE-11.2-DVD-i586.iso not found on medium 'hd:///OpenSuse?device=dev/sda6'
There is an option to try again at which point an additional dialog box appears and I have the opportunity to change things. Other than that, the only option is to cancel and terminate the installation. I've tried the process around 3 times, but if I'm doing the same thing then not surprising I'm getting the same result.

Why does this happen? I am (this time) trying to install Atmel's gnu-avr toolchain. Atmel's web site gives the repository as http:www.atmel.no/avr32/suse/11.0/i586. I put that into YAST2's repository manager, and it comes back with "unable to create repository from URL..."
Why does this happen? It's hardly unique to the Atmel repository: in fact, it seems to be YAST's default behavior on ANYTHING other than the official SUSE repos.
Is there some way to fix this, or bypass it with some other installation tool, so I can get the software I need?

I cannot download the timezone RPM(and other RPM's) from several repositories(I haven't found ANY that will allow me to DL the timezone RPM's and I have checked 8 so far!) This breaks the update as it will stall on any of the undownloadable(new word for O.E.D. undownloadable) RPM's
This was noted in the thread Yast vs system tray.

Im not able to install the package mesa-32bit from this repository: Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.3. It tells me to make a huge change on architecture on many packages, plus downgrading mesa to 7.8.2 from 7.9 !

I am trying to update four OpenSUSE 10.3 servers. This worked once on one server, but I have been unable to repeat that success. I use yast's Online Update to select repositories, but at the end of the repository refresh they keep coming back with 'No active update source is available. Exit Online Update now?' I get this error:
Download failed: File /repodata/repomod.xml not found on media: [URL]
It appears to connect to remote repositories, but always fails. Is it realistic for me to expect to update 10.3, or is it a lost cause? I am not ready to jump to 11 yet, but I am required to update them. I am a newb, so I am not clear on the process. Are package versions locked in place for specific versions of OpenSUSE? If so, how can I find out what the final versions were for 10.3 so that I can at least tell my auditors that they are as up-to-date as they can be?

I was asked to come up with a solution to get updates to our linux computers on a classified network. I was told to create a local YUM repository and have the clients connect to it. -- Simple right. No at least not to me. The last time I worked with linux was back on WS3, things have changed. So let me explain my situation. I have various Red Hat Linux versions -- 5.1, 5.4 & 5.5 that are not connected to the internet and never will be. I need a way to grab updates for those versions and load them.
I have one linux RHEL 5.5 with paid subscription that is allowed to be connected to the internet.I was going to use this one as my repository to download the packages I need, disconnect from the internet and have my "blessed" machines access it through an nfs share. Possible solutions were to create a local YUM repository, set up a mirror or perhaps red hat satellite (which may or may not coast more money.) I need an easy to step by step guide or what would be the best solution.

I'm new here, an Ubuntu user who would try Opensuse for a while. That is if I'm able to launch the thing !
I'd like to create a Live Usb Stick to test it and install it if I like it but it doesn't seem to work.
I tried the website method, using "Win32DiskImager.exe" but the program doesn't work for me (WinXP) : it looks like it's writing but when the "Done" message is prompted, I'm unable to access the usb key, Windows says it's not formatted. That doesn't look right...
I tried with LinuxLive Usb Creator but the boot process fails and Universal-Usb-Installer doesn't offer an Opensuse option.
Is there another way to install the distribution on an USB stick ? I could still try through Ubuntu but that would be quite surrealistic.

I've got 3 extra disks on OpenSuse 11.2 - all the same size. I've created a partition on all of them as type 0xFD. If I then try and add raid in yast I get "There are not enough suitable unused devices to create a RAID."

I am attempting to use SuseStudio "preload" and "live" .iso images and the instructions at SDB:Live USB stick - openSUSE to create a bootable USB drive.dd_rescue ends after the expected amount of time--without reporting errors--yet "fdisk -l" reports that the device does not contain a valid partition table. The USB key does not boot and appears to have no data.
For what it's worth, my build host is Gentoo on 2.6.39, and I have the latest dd-rescue available. The USB disk is a PNY attache 4GB and works fine with any ISO's supported by unetbootin. The only other bare metal I have here is a netbook running Mepix, so I can't make use of solutions that start with "Boot your existing OpenSuse workstation

I have written a script which builds a repository into a website document root and it seems to work OK apart from one little problem other servers which use that repository have set it to autorefresh, but they don't, I have to manually execute "zypper refs".how yast2 knows that a repository is out of date?

I manage a computer remotely in a different country. The last upgrade I did (to openSUSE 11.2) seems to have had one issue that I didn't work out until later. I am unable to "Online Update" or "Software Manage" the system. Whenever I do I get the following error:
[Code]....
I have been through a number of attempted fixes via the thread 434687-software-repository-corruption but have not managed to resolve the issue. There is no one at the location that could repeat the "update" to hopefully fix the issue that way. I have a copy of the 11.2 DVD iso file on the remote computer. Is there some way that I can get the repository DB rebuilt or reinstalled so that I can then install other software and do Online Updates? Whatever I try has to be doable with the system running so that I can OpenVPN connect and issue commands remotely.

I would like to test 12.1 M5 on my real hardware, so I have special for this purpose two additional partitions (sda2 (to install milestone) and sda3 (to store installation ISO files)). I am running my stable 11.4 with Grub on sda1.
I do not like to burn DVDs just for short test of one milestone, so I was used to download DVD ISO, to unpack it to sda3 partition with all its files, then I changed Grub to boot install Linux from sda3. Installation complains there is no DVD or CD, then I chose to force installation from hard disk and select sda3 partition and select root directory "/". As I was used to from 11.4 this will start installation as it would be started from DVD.
But I think the problem has appeared since 12.1, where I get message: No repository found. (on sda3 / ), so the installation does not start.
I know this is not official way to install openSuse, but it worked before, and it was fast and easy for me, to install from hard disk.

I want to upgrade Koffice to 2.1.1. When I do a search at software. [URL]...search, I see koffice2-2.1.1 available at KDE:43/openSUSE_11.2 and KDE:Backports/openSUSE_11.2.
zypper info kdebase4 shows Version: 4.3.1. OpenSUSE is 11.2. What's different about those 2 repositories? They both appear to be the same. I'd like to get updates for KOffice. I'm using it for project management.

Now, with gdm login gives just wallpaper & no desktop. If I change to xdm as window manager I can login OK. The installed version of gdm is gdm-2.28.2-1.3.i586.

I just purchased openSUSE 11.2 x64 on DVD from osdisc.com, as well as the 5 x64 repository DVD's. The base install went fine, but when I try to add thos's to my software repositories using yast they all have the same listed name, "repository" - I can change that to show "repository disk 1" etc, but when I go to install stuff and the software installer asks for "repository disk 1" I put that in the dvd drive, and it cannot recognise it, spits it out and asks for the same disk again...hmmmm. Should I not change the default name that comes up when each DVD is added to the list? If I leave them unchanged will I be told which is the correct disk to insert, remembering that in the list they all have the same name

If there are e.g. multiple repositories with the same prio, which contain different versions of an RPM. What happens if an install is made and a particular package has a dependency, where no version is specified? Would all repositories of the same pri be searched and the newest RPM version be installed. OR Would simply once the RPM is found in one of those pri's simply be taken and no further searching made. So summarized when all repositories are the same priority, is the first found RPM taken or the RPM with the latest version?
