Dec 31, 2009
i tried to install Oracle XE on openSUSE 11.2. The first attempt without orarun didn't work, so i read. How to install OracleXE on openSUSE 11.1 - openSUSE Forums and wrote a script for installation:
[code]...
How can i fix this or have oracel-xe running as oracle:dba? Or do i need "groupmod -A oracle oinstall"?

I am completely new to OpenSuse and just installed it. However, I wanted things encrypted for work and chose LVM2 with password encryption upon installation. However, I didn't change any of the values. Now I see that my home partition is only about 30 Go and I cannot mount the oter 300GB that sit on another partition. When I try to mount it through nautilus I have to enter my password and then get :Unable to mount 307 GB LVM2 Physical Volume

After upgrade of 11.1 to 11.2 I noticed that none of services that was started in 11.1 at boot are starting now in 11.2. I check run-level of services with
Code:
chkconfig --list
When I start services manually everything is OK, but on restart they do not starting. Another weired thing is that my SuSEfirewall2 is filtering everything on input, nevertheless my previous configuration is still there, but ports are closed.

I just got an android phone that I will want to interface with my linux box, which is currently behind a time warner cable modem. In the morning when I'm groggy, and my computer is off, I want to be able to kick the power button on, leave for work, and have it e-mail me the ip address I get from time warner, so I can check it on my phone.
I don't have the script written or anything yet, all I'm asking about here is how I would go about getting the script to run once I have it -- I can boot to a user using an automatic login and probably get away with it but that seems to be poor practice.
I'm really a stranger to the world of customizing a bootup.
Leaving the computer on all the time is a bad option even though my electric is included in rent, I live in a studio and I don't like the noise, and the environment and all. And manually doing mindless, automatic work is not the reason I have computer.

I want to experiment with hugepages support in KVM. I have added
<memoryBacking>
<hugepages/>
</memoryBacking>
to my domain xml.
Also I create the directory /hugepages and mounted it using
mount -t hugetlbfs hugetlbfs /hugepages/
and created huge pages using
echo 4096 > /proc/sys/vm/nr_hugepages
Now, when starting the domain from virt-manager, I get the message:
libvirtError: internal error hugetlbfs filesystem is not mounted
What is the recommended way to setup hugepages in opensuse 11.3?

Ive opensuse and windows on my laptop. I hardly use windows anymore but I would like to keep it. Im getting warning messages saying that I only have about 75 MB left on linux. Windows has lots of space available (especially the "d" partition which I use for storing stuff in like music and video) but I do not know how to "claim" that partition for for Suse.

I was messing around couple linux distros and a desktop earlier today. When I booted from the Ubuntu disk, it seemed to take like 2-5 minutes on each screen. So was basically taking like 10 minutes before I even got to the disk's menu. When i booted the machine off of openSUSE 11.2 disk it booted nice and fast, then installed without a hitch. When i put the Ubuntu disk into my laptop it booted fast and fine there.I'm just curious if anyone has any ideas why that desktop would seem to disagree with a bootable Ubuntu disk like that. Those things are obviously designed to work with near anything. It's a standard IDE CD-ROM, 7600GT, IDE hard drive, all pretty standard stuff.

I am too stupid to run a live Linux on a Macbook air. I used both, an openSUSE 11.3-KDE Live-CD and a Live-USB key and tried several boot options.
(i) I held down "C" to boot from CD → didn't work. It's an Apple CD drive but came with an older Macbook air a few years ago.
(ii) Found the bootmenu by holding down the option (ALT) key. Neither Live-CD nor Live-USB were shown. You can only choose the harddrive (and available wireless networks).
(iii) "Command-Shift-Option-Delete" to boot from an external drive didn't work either. I assume my USB key is an external drive, right?
I don't want to install openSUSE on the mac I just want to run a live system from time to time. Therefore I want to bypass Boot Camp or rEFIt and that's probably why I am stuck here. I wonder, if I really have to setup one of them to boot into a live system? The wiki article "openSUSE on a Mac" is under review right now.

I'm looking to extract a config from a working kernel..that much was pretty easy..all ya gotta do is "cp /proc/config.gz ." which will put it in whatever directory you're currently in and then do a "gzip -d config.gz" to get the config file.
Now...after that it gets a bit tricky..Linus says you should never compile a kernel in /usr/src/ because those header files in ../include should never change. He says you should extract a new kernel gz in your home directory and compile it there. I tend to agree (who am I to argue?). Anyway..whereever your sources are this is where you need to copy the config file...
Like this...my home dir is "/home/dart". So I would put the kernel sources there under "/home/dart/linux". I would cd to /home/dart/linux and do "cp /proc/config.gz ." then "gzip -d config.gz" which should leave you with a file called "config", then "mv config .config"
Now here's where I run into a problem..when I do "make xconfig" I get this...
Tried to install the qt3-devel packages from CD but guess what? I ran into cdrom errors which is what I was trying to fix in the first **** place...catch 22 eh?

I played the apprentice sorcerer trying to install mysql workbench by my own and I messed up the system 11.1 by removing accidentally some libraries and decided to jump on 11.4 by using the update feature from the DVD. It worked all good (it seems at least: I didn't lost any datas and all my servers are running ok) but there is no more X11 server (kde) running for the run level 5.
I checked the inittab file and it is set to 5. I can log on root account and now I'm searching how to install kde on this new 11.4 system. I didn't yet tried the failsafe option at boot. Is there a way to set up kde from the internet, my wifi connection is ok ? I saw that yast was not installed nore zypper nore yum. Do I first try another update to fix it (if possible) from DVD?

I am trying to install openSUSE 11.4 as a virtual machine running on VMWare Server V1.0. VMWare Server is running under WinXP 32bit.
I configured the VM with the following settings:
10GB disk
512 MB Ram
The installation starts from the DVD after inserting the disk. OpenSUSE setup appears, i do not touch the default resolution 800x600. Every thing is looking good. After setting the language, the installation process continues. Then a problem with the screen/resolution/graphical adapter appears. After a while I cannot read anything from the setup screen, everything is unreadable. I remember I had those problems already with 11.3 but I did not follow this issue an took openSUSE 11.1 instead. With 11.1 I could follow the installation instruction till the end and I got a running system.

I'm really new to opensuse, and linux in general. I started using 11.2 in may and I'm still having trouble. I started it on a newly refurbished HP Pavillion. It's always seemed to run slow, freezes up when I plug in my external hard drive, won't play music on amarok or it will lag, things like that. When I run it in windows everything works fine. and it has always ran really hot and loud when in opensuse.
To make things worse, lately if I open mozilla, all the programs/windows I have open will disappear, all my tabs will disappear, all the icons on my desktop disappear and my application launcher, clock, etc, all disappear. when i manually shut it down and restart it works fine for a while. I keep trying to find things online but I've got to the point where I'm afraid to mess it up more.

I got a new desktop and figured this would be a great oppurtunity to update to 11.3 (from 11.2) while migrating files.. However I have had lots of problems with it, right of the bat. My first installation got messed up right after it was done, so I had to redo everything. Now the system boots up all fine but I am experiencing crashes every once in a while. By crashes I mean nothing works; the system monitor graphs freeze, the clock freezes, system doesnt respond to key strokes. The only remedy is then to "force an unexpected reboot" (ref: IT Crowd). I have a feeling that it has to do with Yast or something related to Yast, as it is the only common denominator between the crashes so far. However the system doesnt crash everytime I start Yast so I cant really say anything conclusively..
I have also realised that when I attach a secondary screen the graphics get kinda screwed as well.. if that makes any sense... Here are my system details: Dell Vostro Desktop with Core i7 64bit processor
8 x 2.8Ghz
6gig ram
graphics card: GeForce GT220
What could be the problem here? btw let me know if anyone wants to see logs from /var/log/messages

I am trying to install 11.2 but it keeps freezing. I press install and the Linux kernal loads and afterwards I get a black screen and after 30 seconds the DVD player stops running. I have also tried to the online network install and the exact same thing happens. I also tried a DVD I have of 11.1 which I know is good since I have successfully installed it on other machines and the result is also the same. My computer currently has a dual boot of XP and Kubuntu 9.10.
I am returning to Suse after experimenting with Kubuntu but thought I would leave the Kubuntu on the machine (prefer Suse but Kubuntu installed very easily on my computer). Could the Kubuntu be causing this problem or is the difficulty something else? I have also tried the safe install and the other options to no success.

I can configure my software's appearance? Well, for the KDM theme, the Grub Bootsplash, i can download themes people so generously create. I however, desire the BOOTSPLASH. or whatever it is, of openSUSE 11.1. the green with white veins in the background, and a strip of black running horizontally across, with "openSUSE" written on it in white. i mean the one that masks the initial Text interface, the FIRST GUI you see after GRUB. The one that also shows when you power down. Is this a plausible endevour? I do have my 11.1 iso, in case it's stored as a theme in there.

I needed to load Linux on a Samsung Q1Ex for a project I'm contracting on, and could not for the life of me get anything to run. Turns out that the video card is a chrome relative, and for some reason, almost every distro out there (I usually use debian for this sort of project - ie, no money, but use SLES at my day job) failed to even get to textmode console. Trying several distros, I finally put it out there and used OpenSuse and voila!, vga was working. After that, I got X running, and many hours later had the mouse working. The key to this device is Windows. I ended up parsing through the registry looking for "touch" and found that the software in use on Windows is eGalaxTouch. A quick google brought up their site where I found several Linux drivers. I used the beta mode drivers to get the mouse working. Here is a more detailed breakdown.
Use OpenSuse 11.3 (I used the full blown disc - its is the only distro I could get to boot correctly as the others all used OpenChrome, while OpenSuse seems to use fbdev - note here that installing the unichrome drivers will actually break X and cause you to have to reboot to get away from the mess on the screen). Use eGalaxyTouch drivers. The pdf's included in the download have step-by-step instructions but the big pieces are the setup.sh script and the serio_raw steps (note if you perform a 'hwinfo --bios | more' you can figure out which /dev/input/event* you're using - for me it was event1 and serio4). Note also to choose PS/2 when executing the setup.sh script provided in their download. eGalax_eMPIA Technology Inc. TouchKit Linux Driver Here is my xorg.conf now:
Section "ServerLayout"
InputDevice "EETI" "SendCoreEvents"
Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection
[Code]....
On the video, just stay with the fbdev and you should be good. So far, I've had KDE, Gnome, TWM all running; and now have my EFL apps running! Woohoo! Next piece of the puzzle is to verify sound, but on the face of it, looks like the system recognized it off the bat. And of course one other note. 11.3 is going to make me a convert!

It started when I wanted to dual boot Windows 7 and Opensuse off of my netbook (No DVD/CD drive) I tried install suse from an external hard drive and I botched it. I ended up erasing EVERYTHING off of my internal netbook hard drive. Windows and all.
Well, I had a couple of other computers so I studied up and eventually successfully installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on my external hard drive (11.3 being the one that I accidentally erased everything with, so kinda scared of it) and now I want to install openSUSE 11.2 on my internal netbook hard drive.
I can not use disks
I can not use a flash drive (For some reason, even if I make it bootable, it will not load up, this could be because it's actually a 8GB microSD card that is placed in a USB card reader.)
I can not use an external hard drive because that's what I'm running suse off of.
I've tried reading up on how to install suse on another drive off of the hard drive and I've gotten as far as whenever I boot up the netbook with the suse external hard drive connected it will ask to boot into OpenSUSE, the Fail Safe, or to install OpenSuse. When I select to install it it gives me the Error 18 Unknown File system.
I've tried formatting the internal hard drive twice. One as NTFS and again as EXT4. Neither seems to effect it other than when it's ext4 I can open it and it contains a Lost and Found folder.
When I interrupt the boot sequence by pressing c and going to the terminal and I use the root (hd +TAB command it tells me I have a hd0 and a hd1. The hd1 only has 1 partition which is ext4, which I'm assuming hd1 is the internal hard drive (I'm not sure how to check) and the hd0 is the external hard drive, which has three partitions. One with an unknown file system and two with ext4. When I try to enter the set up from the terminal it gives me the same error for any thing I put it (e.g. root (hd0,0) gives the same error as root (hd0,1), or root (hd0,2) and root (hd1,0)
Something like it cannot locate these two files I'm assuming it needs to boot. If anyone finds this relevant I'll retry it and post the files its missing.
I've been searching for awhile and can't find any threads that can solve my problem. From other threads, however, I have noticed that I should probably include my menu.lst, listed below
Code:
I have also ran the boot info script and received the RESULTS.txt file it generates. Listed below
Code:
