OpenSUSE Install :: How To Restart USB

May 10, 2010

Sometimes USB devices (like my keyboard and mouse) stop working while I'm away from my opensuse 11.2 PC. A reboot fixes it, but can I just restart the USB devices (physical unplug and replug doesn't work). Googling hasn't given me the answer to what must be an easy one.

OpenSUSE Install :: Broken System After Install Of Kernel Sources And Restart?

May 29, 2011

I had recently installed the kernel sources so that I could compile the VirtualBox kernel module to use well but I had not restarted afterwards. I had been using my system problem free until tonight when I decided to restart. I had no internet connection and through ifconfig showing only lo and ifup eth0 returning "device eth0 is not accessible", I discovered I had a bigger problem than at first thought. Then I discovered that no PCI devices other than video were working, and so I referred to /var/log/messages and discoverd a line stating that "/lib/modules/2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop/modules.dep : no such file or directory.

All other entries in that directory were some version of 2.6.37.1-1.2.

Unfortunately I had to end up reinstalling because witho

Use case: I've update my system, with some X and kde. I don't want to restart, so i go to vt1, login as root, and type "init 3". X and kde shutted down. After i type "init 5" to get back everything.

But if i logout vt1, X and kde are also gone. I know that's normal, but i want to start X and kde as they start on boot. It's the same with a normal account and "startx" or "startkde"

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.1 - XFCE 4.4.3 Will Not Shutdown Or Restart

Dec 15, 2009

Pressing the shutdown or restart buttons in XFCE simply logs me out and leaves the system running. I did some Googling and it was suggested that by default users don't have permission to shutdown. (not sure how this is a XFCE specific problem in that case but moving on...)

I've taken the following advice:
For a "desktop" system that wants to protect itself from casual attacks (and "puzzled penguins"), but still grant the user control of their system, run the following as "root":
USER=<your_userid>
polkit-auth --show-obtainable | while read OPT; do
polkit-auth --user $USER --grant $OPT
done

Where <your_userid> is the name of your unprivileged account. I wasn't entirely sure how to run it, so I stuck it into a shell script and ran that with the sudo command. Needless to say it hasn't worked. Is there an easy "sure fire" way to fix this problem, hitting the shutdown button repeatedly to test really grates on you after a while. BTW, Pressing the power button on the front of the system shuts it down okay.

OpenSUSE Install :: No Partition Visible After Restart?

Aug 29, 2010

I've decided to install openSUSE on my Dell PowerEdge SC1420. It's got an onboard Adaptec CERC SATA 2S RAID controller that I've used to set up a RAID 0 using 2x 250GB SATA drives. The SATA RAID is enabled in BIOS (which I've updated to v. A04) and the logical device is set to bootable.

openSUSE sees the logical device and sets up 4 partitions (3x Ext4 and 1x SWAP) and install seems to go okay. I get through to the GNOME desktop and everything seems to be working okay until I reboot. Then I get an error saying that no partition is detected from the CERC 2S device.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I've spent the entire weekend trying different configurations of raid and partion file systems! I'm on the verge of buying windows 7 and I guess I'll have to if this just isn't going to work.

OpenSUSE Install :: Computer Does Not Shut Down / Restart

Oct 2, 2010

Brand-new to Linux. Using a computer with openSUSE 11.3 (64-bit) freshly installed. Install went flawlessly without any kind of error messages.

Hardware used: MSI X58 Eclipse, Intel i7-920, 6 GB memory, Seagate 500 GB SATA.
openSUSE is the only OS installed.

After the install is finished, all programs work fine. HOWEVER when I try to shut down/restart the computer nothing happens! I basically have to use the power off button to shut down...

OpenSUSE Install :: Yast Modules Always Restart?

May 22, 2011

I've got a weird problem since the update to 11.4: every time I use a yast module (the problem occurs with all of them), when I've finished (press OK or Cancel), it relaunch the module after the work is done. For example, launch the Package Manager, choice a package to install press OK : it performs the install and then relaunch the Package Manager. If you choose to quit, it will relaunch it... The only way to stop it to kill the process (or killx). The same problem occurs with the terminal version of yast. it's linked to a config file of yast under root or something so? I haven't found such problems reported on the internet.

Feb 22, 2010

Im running opensuse 11.2 on Linux 2.6.31.5-0.1 64Bit, KDE 4.3.1 with 4GB RAM, Intel duo core processor with Intel graphics card. I initially had opensuse 11.1, which i removed and installed 11.2. Initially everything. Then came the problem, the system starts up fine but then after a few hours freezes, monitor powers off and it wont accept commands from the keyboard or mouse. Meanwhile the lights (caps lock, numeric and scroll) on the keyboard blink. The power light is still on and i can hear the hard disk turning.

I have to forcefully turn the power off and restart but can freeze again after random periods.I do lengthy and demanding computations and its common for the PC to run for weeks without turning it off.

OpenSUSE Install :: Black Screen (11.2) On Restart After Installing Some Items

Nov 11, 2010

A few glitches aside, 11.2 has been very good. Today I installed realcrypt. While in yast, I noticed some other items were set to install. I accepted them along with realcrypt. After the install, clicking the -more applications- button (gnome) did not display the menu, just the mouse wait indicator. After a few tries, I decided to restart. Clicking shutdown did not present the normal menu, but instead instantly shutdown. On restart, I noticed 3-ish orphaned inode(?) messages. After boot completes I'm left with a black screen.I'm running 11.2 Gnome raid-1. The raid array appears to be fine. It emails status on boot, and I received those emails (via google) on the my laptop. I can boot to runlevel 1, so the question is, once there where do I look for cause / fix.

OpenSUSE Install :: Fake-RADI0 Detected By Yast But Not Mounted After Restart

Apr 20, 2011

I have fake(bios) raid0 with Windows XP and third non-raid hd which I wanted use to install linux to (as I read about problems with installing grub into raid0). During installation Yast had correctly detected raids and all windows partitions (basically its divided into two raids with 2 partitions of 1st and 3 on 2nd) and even proposed mounting them at /windows/c, /windows/d and so on. Now I have OpenSuse 11.4 installed, grub at /boot on sdc but to log to system I need to use installation disc (otherwise Windows starts up). What I wanted to do is follow this tutorial to add grub to Windows bootloader: Boot Multiboot openSUSE Windows (2000, XP, Vista - any mix) with Windows bootloader. Problem is after reboot partitions are not mounted (dirs exists but nothing there) so I cannot copy boot code to windows. I read that fake raid may need special drivers but when i start Yast->system->partitions it again shows everything correctly!

fragment from partitions section in Yast (I translated/removed non-important entries as I have non-English system so it may vary from what is actually in Eng version):

Code:
Device: /dev/md125p1
Size: 48.83 GB

OpenSUSE Install :: Shutdown / Restart Screen Distortion With Logout Desktop Effect

Mar 28, 2011

When trying to "Leave" the system (either via the small button on the lower right of the taskbar or by right clicking on the Desktop and selecting "Leave") the logout / shutdown / restart screen comes up. I have the "Logout" desktop effect activated, which is supposed to desaturated the background when the Leave screen appears. However, instead of simply greying out the background, the image on the desktop and the rest of the screen also gets slightly distorted, with seemingly random distortion effects cropping up all over the place (e.g. horizontal lines or large blurs).

These distortions are different every time the Leave screen comes up. The Leave screen itself is displayed fine, and apart from the dodgy background I have no other issues with the whole process (the system shuts down or restarts properly according to my choice). I am using the Radeon drivers, and all other desktop effects I have on (Magic lamb, cover switch, present windows, etc) work fine and without a hitch. It's only the Logout effect that seems to glitch. Are the distortions intentionally created by the effect in order to emphasize the focus on the Leave screen?

Ubuntu Installation :: System Automatically Tried To Restart But On The Restart Got The 'terminal' View

I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.

My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.

I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)

"name@name-desktop:...$ "

I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.

OpenSUSE :: Restart X Without Quitting KDE4?

May 14, 2010

In order to switch between dual head and single head, I need to log out of KDE4 and log in again immediately, which is annoying. How can I avoid that?

Is it possible to restart X without quitting KDE?

At work, when my laptop is docked, I use a dual head configuration (internal + 1 external screen), but at home I use the laptop without a second screen.

Using the binary nvidia driver, the laptop always selects the correct configuration upon booting (TwinView), but not upon hot-plugging.

I would just like to suspend the laptop and continue before/after commuting.

any suggestions? I have tried disabling nepomuk and strigi thinking that might have been an issue but I still get the same problem. I also tried removing dolphinrc and dolphin from ~/.kde4/share/config and ~/.kde4/share/apps respectively... still no bueno.
