Have just assembled a new computer and thought I would install the 64 bit version of openSUSE 11.2 in a "Windows free zone". After a hiccup or two I have managed to get a system of sorts running but on trying to copy files from my old computer(via a memory stick) it tells me that Vfat is an unknown file system.On my old computer I am running 32 bit openSUSE 11.2 as a dual boot system with Windows XP and have no problems moving files between the two different file systems.Is it possible to get a 64 bit file system to read 32 bit file system drives and if so how do I do it?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI had recently installed the kernel sources so that I could compile the VirtualBox kernel module to use well but I had not restarted afterwards. I had been using my system problem free until tonight when I decided to restart. I had no internet connection and through ifconfig showing only lo and ifup eth0 returning "device eth0 is not accessible", I discovered I had a bigger problem than at first thought. Then I discovered that no PCI devices other than video were working, and so I referred to /var/log/messages and discoverd a line stating that "/lib/modules/2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop/modules.dep : no such file or directory.
All other entries in that directory were some version of 2.6.37.1-1.2.

I have opensuse 11.4 (Gnome + KDE) installed. The problem is with Gnome. When in KDE, everything works fine. But in gnome, when I shutdown/restart, it merely logs off the session. Then I have to shutdown it from the menu in the login screen.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIm running opensuse 11.2 on Linux 2.6.31.5-0.1 64Bit, KDE 4.3.1 with 4GB RAM, Intel duo core processor with Intel graphics card. I initially had opensuse 11.1, which i removed and installed 11.2. Initially everything.Then came the problem, the system starts up fine but then after a few hours freezes, monitor powers off and it wont accept commands from the keyboard or mouse. Meanwhile the lights (caps lock, numeric and scroll) on the keyboard blink. The power light is still on and i can hear the hard disk turning.
I have to forcefully turn the power off and restart but can freeze again after random periods.I do lengthy and demanding computations and its common for the PC to run for weeks without turning it off.
I added a whole slew of apps to my favorites and lost the 'Shutdown' option...every time I try to shutdown in the Terminal I am told I must be logged in as Root to do so...I can't figure out how to do this I'm a newbie to Linux but a CNE 5 -haven't used it 10 years- an MCP and A+ certified I've searched local help and SuSe's site and I can't find anythingI've only spent a couple of hrs on this and have had SuSe 11.2 installed since last Sunday

I bought a new SD card which I intend to put some MP3s on - except that I can't write to it because it tells me the destination is Read Only. No-probs thinks I: I'll just reformat it.

Various chmod commands all result in Read-only file system. I tried umount then mount commands, but it couldn't find it to mount once I'd unmounted it using the same /media/ file path (I assume it's the only one).

My Redhat Enterprise Linux 4 with 6x partitions (/, /boot,/home, /usr, /var, /tmp) of 6.0 GB IDE Hardisk was working quite fine. I plugged in my USb drive into my computer yesterday and tried to delete a folder. I was unable to do so and got the following message
Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately? The file "my file" cannot be moved to the trash. Show Details Unable to create trashing info file: Read-only file system
So when I click on delete I get another error message:
Error while deleting.
There was an error deleting Case Study Database. Show Details Error removing file: Read-only file system
At this point I can only click on Skip, Skip All, or Cancel.
I have not changed anything on the stick recently so I dont know what is causing the problem.
Can windows read files from a home file server with an ext4 file system? or do I have to partition the drive with the server (ext4) and an ntfs partition with the files on?

whats the difference between restarting/stopping apache using 'service httpd restart/stop' and apachectl restart/stop. I know that using 'service httpd restart' is actually a script in /etc/init.d/httpd but what about apachectl?

i want to edit the file menu.lst in /boot/grub i m facing a problem of not to enter in to the graphical interphase, so i m using only the boot terminal whn i try to edit this file it says the file is read only. i tried to change the permission of file with chmod also
but it is also not working i tried the comand gksu gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst but it is not opening the file to edit since the graphical interphase is not there.
I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)

What are the possible problem when Windows access the file from Ubuntu got Read Only even though have a full permission to read, write and execute the file? Ubuntu to Ubuntu accessing the file there is no problem only Windows got a problem.
