Short question: It has been possible in earlier releases to create boot floppies from CD install version, for those PCs who haven't a bootable CD drive.11.2 is deployed as a DVD iso, but I need CD isos for an older laptop with a bootable CD drive only, not DVD. Is there a similar possibility for 11.2 also available?I want a full install, not the readonly "Live" versions.
View 2 RepliesI have a Dell laptop with Windows XP installed, and for various reasons (Help: I borked my WindowsXP boot when installing OpenSUSE 11.3) I can not install a GRUB boot loader to the first hard drive (hd0).
I currently have a second hard drive in this laptop with a perfectly working OpenSUSE 11.3 instance, but no way to boot into it. I remember back in ancient times, a common option with Linux distros was to create a boot floppy to boot into Linux rather than installing GRUB or LILO to MBR. Since this laptop doesn't have a floppy drive I'd like to do the same thing with a USB stick. Is there any way to install GRUB (or something similar) to a USB stick? What I am not asking here is whether I can put a full, bootable Linux instance on a USB drive - I only want a boot loader on USB that launches to the appropriate mount point on (hd1).
Is it possible to install using floppies? Perhaps a floppy installer that'd be like the MinCD and download most of the data? My CD-RW just went belly up (quit working) and the machine is 1998 so no USB boot.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am new to linux. I tried and failed. I need some help on Creating patitions (I think it is root, swap and home).I have HP laptop with WIndows 7 installed. I have shrink the volume to allow Linux installation. I have three partitions, first one is windows boot - about 100MB. Second one is about 110GB and it has windows 7. Third one is UNALLOCATED space of 110GB that I intended for Suse.
Now I am going to install the Suse. The unallocated spaces should be "primary" or "extended"? Also, should I divided this new partition in to three partition? If does, what are sizes for each? I want to learn Linux so I will able to look for better job. This is the first time I ever look into linux and confused.

From my limited research, OpenSUSE seems to fit the bill (as does Mandriva Powerpack).
Also, how easy is it to create a dual-boot with Windows 7 with this distro?

I would like to create a dual boot Opensuse/Vista laptop. My problem is I do not have a DVD-RW drive, and I am not that good with creating a bootable USB stick. I have read some of the installation guides offered here and attempted to install Opensuse via my USB stick without success. My question is there a setup.exe download offered for Vista users who would like to create a dual boot laptops? I have an 8Gb USB stick that was made "bootable" via some other forums, and I have downloaded the DVD ISO image of Opensuse 11.2 to my desktop.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to create a Linux instance on a Windows 7 PC and use dual-boot. I have created 64GB of space for Linux. Is this enough? When I boot from the live DVD and go through the setup, I get stuck setting up the unassigned space as a linux partition. I don't understand what the setup is trying to tell me and I'm afraid I'll wipe out Windows 7. The message I get says there isn't enough space even though the unassigned available area is 64GB. I am very timid about following what Yast2 is telling me because to my untrained eye it appears the setup wants to use my entire hard drive. Where can I find more information about the disk setup section of the installation process?

All I can get are errors saying cang find kernel or error like that. I have used linux and windows environment. The iso I am using is fine, I am sure because I have instaled it on two pcs. Iso gnome-live >> usb (bootable to install)
If I boot from the opensuse 64bit DVD (Ver.11.0/11.1/11.2 - its the same effect)-the bootmenu appears-i choose to install opensuse in the menu-now the kernel is loading-then i see shortly the next screen-and then my notebook reboot.I have the effect also in the live-version 64bit.The 32bit version works properly.i haven't any problems with vista 64bit or Ubuntu/Kubuntu 64bit, but the same effect with mandriva 2010.0 64bit.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the DVD 32 bit and 64 bit as I have 2 machines, one 32 and one 64. After I burn the disks, I put the DVD in and run the check media. The 32 bit version says invalid checksums, cd is broken. I try to install and ever single checksum is invalid, not just one. But every file. The 64 bit says it has bad sectors in it. And will not install. I have tried re-downloading them. Tried burning them on computers. Tried different burning speeds. Nothing. Is this just bad files on the website, or is this all my computrs?

View 2 Replies View Relatedso I created an install CD and installed 11.2, but I'd like to take advantage of all the goodness the 4.2GB install DVD iso has to offer and re-install... but for some reason, I cannot create it (well, at least one that works). I've even tried an 8GB thumb drive using UNetbootin and still nothing.
I've used K3B and Brasero on the laptop I intend to install to burn the CD and DVD (on a low setting), so I know they're not the problem. I checked the md5sum, and it's good, so I know it's not that. I've booted with other Live CDs/DVDs and thumb drives, so I know they're good and the BIOS settings are correct. Again, the problem seems to point to the DVD iso, as I've used the CD iso without a problem.
So, two questions:
1. Is there something I'm not aware of about the DVD iso?
2. Should I leave the installation I used with the CD as is, but use the DVD's info to upgrade it?
Does the gnome live cd install a "live version" of OpenSUSE or a "standard version? I used knoppix 4.x long time ago... I don't want to end up with a default user called linuxuser and not be able to save any changed unless I created an additional read/write partition.

In an effort to solve a problem I was letting openSuSE upgrade as much as I could and then all of a sudden gdm wouldn't start.
I've found some problems but I have no idea how to fix them, remember I have no graphical interface. zypper does work and I was looking for a way to downgrade something figuring that just reversing one of my upgrades should do it.
If anyone could give me some steps for getting out of this mess I would appreciate it. Also, if it is possible to just install the new openSuSE 11.2 without losing all my custom settings I would be happy to take that as a solution.
In any case, here is the info I have so far on the problem:

When trying to run the Live version of OpenSuSE 11.0 from a CD, I can run from the command line, only. No graphics at all. No error messages. Tried some of the other suggested fixes on other threads, but nothing worked. The machine in an old HP OmniBook.
What I really want to do is reformat the HDD and install OpenSuSE on it, but the machine has no DVD drive, so I downloaded an iso image of the live version of 11.0 and burned a bootable CD. It boots, but I can get no X-Window, or the KDE desktop. I'd really like to convert this old machine from Windows 98 to Linux, but seem to have hit a brick wall.
wher can I download an older version. My system has less then 1 gig of ram so I can not run the 11.3 version, I tried 5 times.

View 7 Replies View RelatedA month ago, my HP Mini 1035NR, with a Windows XP system died. Since then, it won't boot into Windows. I tried installing Ubuntu via a bootable USB with no luck. I have finally been able to create a working bootable USB running the Gnome version of Open Suse 11.3.
Aside from not picking up my ethernet connection to the Internet, my bigger issue is I can't install Open Suse from the USB. I get a message when I try to install that there may not be enough memory and it hangs at the section where you choose your time zone. I would like to install the latest version of Open Suse with KDE. Is there anything else I can do?
Where can I download opensuse 10.X version?

Thinking of installing openSuSE on my laptop and wondering how the upgrade process is. I know 12.1 is coming out in only a couple of months. I don't really want to spend all my time customizing 11.4 and then find out a straight upgrade is very buggy or even not possible and have to reinstall.

It would be convenient if i could simply install 11.3 along side my Ubuntu distro. I see yast enables me to reduce my sda1 and create a new partition, (sda3) However it offers to mount sda3 in /usr ? Could you offer me any advice please? My objective is to be able to select which distro from the grub menu.

The motherboard I got has a feature (I don't think I can shut off) that lets you select what drive you want to boot off of. I have XP installed on the first drive and openSUSE 11.1 on the second drive. I am running openSUSE 11.2 with KDE 3.5 and I simply dropped my drives onto this new motherboard. I can boot up (Linux) just fine but am having other issues with my mouse. I am thinking of Updating to openSUSE 11.2 and the current KDE version.
Should I just update to 11.2 or do a new install. I have LOTS of data in my home directory I really don't want to lose and have a partition for data as well that is pretty full. I don't want to lose this stuff. What should I do about Grub with this BIOS that lets you pick which drive to boot off of? Put Grub in the MBR of the drive with openSUSE on it and nuke the MBR of the XP drive?
I was installing the kernel-pae, in the middle of the installation it said it couldn't resolve some dependencies. it ask me to ignore or cancel I chose to cancel there after my system froze.
