Ubuntu Networking :: Why 5 Digit Ports Open In 10.10

Jan 2, 2011

I have been running Ubuntu 10.10 and have found that at any time I am connected to the Internet that I will randomly see high port numbers open when doing a port scan on my computer all are in the unknown listings with five digit numbers so I don't know what is going on or who is using them. Please check your system to see if you are having the same thing happen by using network tools and filling in your local ip address in the port scan tab. If you shut down your Ethernet interface and run port scans the high ports are no longer open. this will at least keep whoever is using your ports at bay when you are not using the net.

Ubuntu :: Point To A Two-digit Interval With Regular Expressions?

Sep 9, 2010

Is it possible to point to a two-digit interval with regular expressions?

Background:
I'm using mplayer to watch tv shows, that often have episode numbers in their names. I know how to easily add several files to the playlist by using brackets, by typing something like
$ mplayer tv/South.Park.S1.E0[1-5]*avi

Is there a way to point to files 06-13 in a single expression?

Ubuntu :: Numeric Keypad Controls Mouse - No Digit Input

May 21, 2010

I've noticed a bit of a problem here in the last few days...after some point, my numeric keypad stops being a numeric keypad; instead, it controls the mouse (5 right clicks, and the outer keys move the cursor in the appropriate direction). It doesn't appear to happen on boot, as I generally type the numeric bits of my password with the keypad, but some point after. The only common events I can think of where this has occurred is either after connecting to the system via SSH, or after swapping to tty1 (which usually requires re-enabling of numberlock for the terminal to recognize digits, again for the password). No matter what state the NumLock is in (off or on) at this point, the keypad fails to function as a keypad.

Programming :: Print A Single Digit Integer On To The Screen Using The Int 0x80?

Jul 4, 2010

I want to print a single digit integer on to the screen using the int 0x80. I have loaded the number in the ecx(=5, say), size in edx (=4, lenght) and eax (=4) ebx (=1). I've added 48 to the contents of ecx, and then calling int 0x80, I thought should print 5 on the screen.

However it does not print anything. also gives no errors. I checked the contents of the ecx reg (gdb), it has 53.

A snippet showing the this will be great. I've seen snippets using the c library (printf), but I want to see how it is done using int 0x80.

Programming :: Simple Shell Script That Produce Digit Values

I just started learning shell programming and I'm trying to create a shell script that produce something like this:
Input: 1 234 5 678 9
Output: < <<< 5 >>> >
Input:abc d 1234 5 5 67890 e f ghij
Output:abc d <<<< 5 5 >>>< e f ghij
Characters with values less than 5 will display '<' digit values greater than 5 display '>'. The digit '5' will be left unchanged.

Below is my unfinished code:

f2="$(echo ${f} | tr "$f1" "$f3")"

OpenSUSE Install :: How To Change Filetype

Dec 19, 2009

the filetype of a file? You know, when you type ls -l in a terminal, you get a long description of each file in that directory. The first letter indicates what that file is (- for regular file, d for directory, l for link, etc)My problem is that I have a data directory in /home that shows up like this:?--------- 1 root root 0 1969-12-31 20:00 suniI did managed to change this to?rwxrwxr-- 1 suni users 0 1969-12-31 20:00 sunibut what do I do with the "?" ???and as you can see the size of this supposed-to-be directory is zero, and I do not understand why. Also the date is quite absurd.

how did I end up here? One day I could not boot, I tried a boot disk to use some repair tools. The automatic thingy stomped all over the faulty /home partition, and fixed it by wiping it clean, only the lost+found directory was there when I managed to boot. So I unmounted /home and tried to see what can I do with dumpe2fs, fsck, e2fsck, debugfs, but that's all I could achieve. I saved the terminal window content for further analysis, so if you need to look into it, I can provide that (I just didn't think that it would be appropriate to dump it right here).

Other system info: when I could not boot I had openSUSE 11.1 x86_64, AMD processor, 4GB DDR400, RAID5, with ext3 file system. I had a 11.2 i386 install DVD for my kids play computer, so I tried to use that for recovery - but I don't think that the version nr or the architecture difference would have caused the wipe-out of /home. Instead, I am convinced that I was a lazy idiot and I just left everything to the machine brainlessly

OpenSUSE Install :: Take To Change The Kdm Theme?

Aug 26, 2010

I have installed some kdm themes (ethais, NewEssenceFinal, oxygen, oxygen-air, MIB-Ossigeno-Kdm-Neutral-2.2) that I would like to try out and they are present in "/usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/".

Changing the theme through SystemSettings>Login Screen changed nothing, logging out still defaulted to the default SUSE theme. So I tried the SysConfig editor through YAST and changed DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME to the theme I wanted, still no change after logging out. I have also changed DISPLAYMANAGER to kdm4.

Opened the "/etc/sysconfig/displaymanager" file to make sure the correct line had changed, and it was.

I deleted the SUSE theme, again made sure the theme I wanted was selected, but now it defaults to a background wallpaper and rather plain looking login screen. I don't know if this is correct but I am using the folder name of the theme I want as the string I enter into SysConfig. I have even rebooted several times just in case it was required. I have tried this through my regular account, obviously entering my root password when required, and also through the root account itself.

OpenSUSE Install :: Change Password Just For Sudo?

Apr 6, 2010

I'm using Debian and openSUSE 11.2 and the sudo-ing is a bit different in Debian. It actually makes more sense to enter your own password like in Debian to achieve sudo status than have to use the root password for sudo status. If I for example would like to give someone on my system sudo rights, I can't give them the root password. Thats just like giving them root access. Or is there a way to change that behavior, or just change sudo password, in openSUSE? Or maybe any other best practice for giving users sudo rights?
