Ubuntu :: Make A 2(n) Digit Number With Additional Zero(s)

Jun 24, 2011

in terminal: if var = 2 and we write the file name "name$i" it would be "name2" but my file name is "name02" (in fact I wanna have a 'for' loop on about 50 files named: a01, a02, ... , a50)

is there any way to make a 2(n) digit number with additional zero(s) like "%02d" in C ?

Ubuntu :: Adding Additional Users Causes Large Number Of Errors?

Jun 29, 2010

I'm running 64-bit 10.04, upgraded from 9.10. The problem I am experiencing is that any user accounts aside from my main account are problematic. This includes any accounts I add, as well as the GDM guest session. The specific problems that I have thus far experienced are as follows:

1. The desktop loads often improperly. In the latest instance of this the graphics on the right side top panel were randomly chopped-up, leaving parts of my clock on either side of the volume control, among other things. 2. If I make ANY customizations to the desktop at all, the desktop takes nearly a full minute to load on log-in. 3. Flash videos don't work properly on Firefox. Sometimes they only play after refreshing a page, often they will not load at all. Also, attempting to load or play a flash video will sometimes causes Gnome or Firefox to crash. 4. (And this is the one that REALLY has me stumped) Whenever I log into my main accountant after logging out of another account, the IBus control appears in my system tray. However, when I open the IBus preferences the associated check box is (and has always remained) unchecked. Not sure where to go with this one. More than anything, the IBus bug makes me unsure of where to even begin looking for the problem.

General :: Make System Partition Letter / Number Designations Persistent?

Aug 15, 2010

Everyone who deals with Linux knows that partitions on hard drives are designated as "sdx#", i.e., sda1 sdb2, etc. I know through experimentation that the number portion of the designation is assigned not according to order on the disk, but chronologically in the order they are created.

Further, if you have several partitions on the disk-say, sda1 through sda3-and you delete sda2, the designation of sda1 will remain the same, but sda3 will become the new sda2. The creation of any further partitions on the drive will start with designation sda3 and increment from that point.

At times this creates a conundrum, especially concerning bootable partitions. Some time back I rendered a partition containing OpenSUSE unbootable because of this, even though Ubuntu owned the GRUB bootloader in the MBR. Ubuntu's GRUB could find and point to the partition using the command "sudo update-grub", but when OpenSUSE took over the boot-up process, its GRUB was pointed to the wrong partition and would freeze up.

My question is this:

Under Windows, one is able to make a Drive letter persistent. Windows will keep the drive letter for that partition and assign around it. Is there a way to change a drive designation number, or at least make it persistent, under Linux? It would be a handy method to forestall these types of booting problems, among other things.

Presently, when a person has installed Linux side-by-side with Windows and want to delete the Windows partition and expand the Linux partition into the free space, I will tell them to format the partition, then shrink it to next to nothing instead of deleting it. This preserves the partition ID scheme while giving them the space to expand their Linux partition into...especially helpful with a seasoned Linux installation that would be a PITA to reinstall and set back up.

Oh, and I already know about UUID. This article explains it, but if you look down through the comments, you will see reasons that it is problematic for desktop application and usage. I want to make it as simple as possible for new Linux users (and myself! ).

Ubuntu Networking :: Why 5 Digit Ports Open In 10.10

Jan 2, 2011

I have been running Ubuntu 10.10 and have found that at any time I am connected to the Internet that I will randomly see high port numbers open when doing a port scan on my computer all are in the unknown listings with five digit numbers so I don't know what is going on or who is using them. Please check your system to see if you are having the same thing happen by using network tools and filling in your local ip address in the port scan tab. If you shut down your Ethernet interface and run port scans the high ports are no longer open. this will at least keep whoever is using your ports at bay when you are not using the net.

Ubuntu :: Numeric Keypad Controls Mouse - No Digit Input

May 21, 2010

I've noticed a bit of a problem here in the last few days...after some point, my numeric keypad stops being a numeric keypad; instead, it controls the mouse (5 right clicks, and the outer keys move the cursor in the appropriate direction). It doesn't appear to happen on boot, as I generally type the numeric bits of my password with the keypad, but some point after. The only common events I can think of where this has occurred is either after connecting to the system via SSH, or after swapping to tty1 (which usually requires re-enabling of numberlock for the terminal to recognize digits, again for the password). No matter what state the NumLock is in (off or on) at this point, the keypad fails to function as a keypad.

Programming :: Print A Single Digit Integer On To The Screen Using The Int 0x80?

Jul 4, 2010

I want to print a single digit integer on to the screen using the int 0x80. I have loaded the number in the ecx(=5, say), size in edx (=4, lenght) and eax (=4) ebx (=1). I've added 48 to the contents of ecx, and then calling int 0x80, I thought should print 5 on the screen.

However it does not print anything. also gives no errors. I checked the contents of the ecx reg (gdb), it has 53.

A snippet showing the this will be great. I've seen snippets using the c library (printf), but I want to see how it is done using int 0x80.

Ubuntu :: Add Additional Mount Point In 11.04?

Apr 8, 2011

I just installed 11.04 beta yesterday and was following along with this article so I could setup a "Storage" partition and always have access to the same files in win 7 or ubuntu. [URL]

The problem happens when you try to install and use ntfs-config and run it. Here is the description from the article:

Now head to the System->Administration menu and pick the NTFS Configuration Tool.

You'll see a few partitions listed, likely as /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, and the like. If you only want your storage drive, it should be listed as /dev/sda3 or something similar--just not the first or second options. Check the box for "Add," click in the "Mount point" column to give it a name (Storage, perhaps?), and hit "Apply." Check both boxes on the next window to allow read/write access, and hit OK, and you're done. Now the drive with all your stuff is accessible to Windows and Linux at all times.

When I try to run the ntfs-config, I get the following.

However, in the software center there is a note below the ntfs-config download saying:

Ubuntu :: Launch An Additional Application And Add It To The Launcher?

Dec 2, 2010

I run 10.10, netbook. Fine so far. I don't manage to call an application that I added manually, though. I have created a menu item, with all subdetails, a proper command, icon, everything. And I can see it in the menu editor, and it is there, even after a reboot. But: How to launch it?? It never shows up under applications, it doesn't show up in Searches, I can't type it in. It does work fine, though, when I open a terminal and add the proper command. It then also shows in the launcher list (left column). But it can't make it 'stick' there, the right-click option does not show in this case.

how to *start* an application that I have added to the menu? Why would a menu item never show as an available application?
