OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Mount Root Filesystem After Changing Graphics Card

I have opensuse 11.3 installed, and my motherboard has the intel i845 chipset,
one day windows had enough of the intel graphics chip and would not let me have anything but 640x480 pixels, well you cant do much with that so I put an ati card in and disabled the intenal graphics. windows was happy enough but suse could not boot - more specifically could not mount the root filesystem, saying it had errors (did a very quick fsck), could not find the journal, and I had a bad superblock. the "failsafe kernel" was no better. If I take the ati card out suse boots fine. however I do swap frequently between windows and linux and changing graphics cards between boots is somewhat irritating.

When I try to boot to OpenSUSE I get the following error during boot-up: unknown filesystem type 'reiserfs' could not mount root filesystem - exiting to /bin/sh$
This only started happening quite recently - before this I could boot to Linux quite happily.

I am running 11.2, kde4. The day before yesterday, the system updated and I think there was kernal update within that. I had no problems immediately afterward. Then I did a total shutdown for the night, and turned it back on yesterday only to find this:
Mount: wrong fs, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda2, missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog--try dmesg | tail or so
Could not mount root filesystem--exiting to /bin/sh
sh: cannot set terminal process group (-1): Inappropriate ioctl for device
sh: no job control in this shell

Besides the last updates from the other day, I did nothing out of the ordinary, no downloads or any system/configuration tweeks. Will I have to reinstall opensuse? or is there a way to reclaim my previous setup--or at least reclaim my files and documents? I'm running off of the 11.2 livecd.

Have been running 11.1 on a generic notebook (eRacks) just fine until a few days ago when CUPS couldn't be reached. Rather than futz more with 11.1, I decided to install 11.2 (which has been on my desktop). Using the same CD, which continues to check ok, the install has failed many times at about the same point: 87% through "copying root filesystem" in yast2.
Specs: Intel P4 2.4 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM, ATI radeon PV250Lf
The HD was partitioned into /, swap, /home, and an extended partition of /opt, /var, /usr. Only / was ext4 and the rest were ext3. Tried various options:
* no apic
* no acpi
* "noapic acpi=off" entered manually
* Vesa instead of 1024x768
Each time had to edit partition table to mount the extended partitions. Always formatted /. At first didn't format the extended patitions, later formated all but /home. Then set yast2 to format / as ext3, to match the other partitions. In the sysinfo page the / partition is now shown as /mnt containing 723.6 MB out of 7 GB, still formatted as ext4. On rescan by yast2 partition manager, / shows as ext3. The install halts every time with an error while "copying root filesystem." Tried booting from the CD direct to install and to the Live OS followed by install--same result. So, hours later, went back to 11.1--which installed in minutes.

I was looking to get glx to work with direct rendering. So i installed the nvidia drivers from the openSuSe Sight. I installed because /var/log/Xorg.O.log Said that the Nvidia card was not loaded. Long story short looks like the card is loaded but X windows... I guess GLX is not running and neither is Opengl. I still have output to the monitor. here is

I have unfortunately found myself unable to properly boot up openSUSE because I decided to buy the Acer Aspire with the i5 Processor.
I have the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (GMA HD) graphics card, and unfortunately from all my searching online and on openSUSE, I have been unable to find a driver for this that works for linux, and in addition I don't know how to install a driver outside of a GUI.
My openSUSE boots up to the boot choosing screen (regular openSUSE or failsafe), and then that nice list of functions being done is displayed, but as soon as the daemon has started, suddenly my screen goes blank and I am unable to do anything about it. Beyond this point, my OS loses all functionability, and while I can hear it computing, I am unable to actually tell WHAT it is computing. get a driver for this and to install this driver and get this GUI running, that would be great.

I have a z9 volari Graphics card that opensuse 1.2 is recognising but the xgi driver is not present. I get the following when I startx:

Perhaps my last post about this was too long and hence why nobody responded. So i will try and keep it simple and let the experts advise me.
I have tried installing an rpm that I got from rpm search. Namely xorg-x11-driver-video-xgi-1.5.0-6.1.i586 which seemed to install but when I did a query it said it was not installed, but when I tried to do an install again it said it was already installed ??
There is also a file called xserver-xorg-video-sis_0.9.3.orig.tar.gz which i got from this site. I have not managed to extract it properly yet but will look into that myself. It appears to have in it a makefile, so I presume it is source files and I could really do with some help in that.

Formated new drive with ext3 on external drive on Suse 11.1 When upgraded to 11.2, drive was not connected... Could not get mounted after that... Set up another boot drive, could not get to mount. Found post with following:
>cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sde1 restore
>mkdir /restore
>mount /dev/sde1 /restore
Error as follows: mount: unknown filesystem type 'crypto_LUKS' Have also got to another point where superblock was incorrect. I can use terminal, but am not a linux guru... Have looked at other posts under luks, but can not find a solution.

I have a dual booting newly installed 64 bit Ubuntu 9.10 on my machine. It was all fine until today. Now when I boot into Ubuntu, I see the error Failed to mount root filesystem. I cant remember any significant changes during the last session. One thing I remember is I upgraded the system using the update manager which asked me to choose an option for grub boot loader. I opted for its upgradation. After the upgrade, I was able to work with Ubuntu for a few more sessions. Windows XP works very fine.I checked other threads which suggested running fsck, but it did not help. fsck does not report any errors.

I am using GRUB bootloader. I can boot into windows fine. But booting into linux gives me the error "kernel panic: unable to mount root fs on unknown block(0,0)I got LILO to load linux fine but GRUB always gives me this error regardless of the linux OS for this particular computer.

I recently installed SuSE 11.1 (64 bit) on my system
AMD Phenom II 940 3.0 Ghz;Biostar TA790GX 128M Motherboard with ATI Radeon HD 3300 Graphics card built in;
4 Gb (2*2 sticks) DDR2 800 MHz RAM
The installation went smoothly, But on first restart and login (and subsequent ones too!) I get a light purple screen with a skyblue box at top left corner, with xconsole written on it. when I Left click anywhere on the screen, I get a popdown with a number of options, of which only XTerm (bash shell) and exit (logout) options work. Now I know the HD 3300 graphics card drivers are not built into the SuSE 11.1 distribution, and I have already downloaded them (Linux ones)from ATI website. I login as Superuser, and type init 3 to go to a very basic screen,login as user, change to superuser again and then run the following file i downloaded from ATI:
sh ati-driver-installer-9-4-x86.x86_64.run
The result/output at the command prompt:

Verifying archive Integrity... All good.

Also I tried making changes via sax2 command, it doesnt seem to work. A window opens where I see that my graphics card has been detected but thats about it. nothing else in that option, everything is greyed out (nothing to be selected)

I did not find my graphics card in the HCL/Nvidia video cards thread. I looked in YaST for drivers & found none. My desktop pc freezes after the system loads so I cannot use my system. I understand about the level '3' boot option for tty input. How would I download/run the nvidia installer from tty?

I have just tried to update my kernel from 2.6.24.5 to 2.6.39-rc3 on a Slackware 12.1 distribution. I have successfully updated the kernel before, but it was from a newer distribution and newer kernel(Slackware 13.1 and 2.6.33.4). After I updated and rebooted, I got the following error:

I am a linux semi-noob who just got the idea that it would be fun to play with Arch Linux.I was dual-booting Windows and OpenSuSE, and I installed Arch by shrinking the Windows partition and putting a new logical partition in between the windows partition and the swap partition I already have.Unfortunately, opensuse still thinks that its root filesystem is on /dev/sda7 so it fails to boot b/c it is looking at an ntfs filesystem that I used for document sharing.If someone has a solution, that will save me from having to reinstall opensuse.

the solution of my monitor is much to small. So I tried to find out, where I can change the settings of my graphic card and monitor. Unfortunately opensuse only gives me the possibility to change it up to 600x800, which is by far too small. So I thought maybe I need to install a driver... so... there I am ... having question marks around my head and wondering how to install a graphics card driver on my opensuse 11.3.???
And where to find the right ones?
My graphic card is a Matrox Mystique (no 220 or anything else!!). I checked the website of Matrix to find my drivers, but it tells me that there is no driver planned for linux. Matrox Graphics - Support - Latest Matrox drivers for legacy products But I guess I am not the only person in the world who uses this graphic card on linux, so there must be a way to make it work!!

My Fedora 12 System was failed when booting.The message like that : mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mapper/my_vol missing codepage or helper program, or other error. In some case, useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so Can't mount at root filesystem. [drm: drm_mode_rmfb ] *ERROR* tried to remove a fb that we didn't own. Boot has failed, sleep forever. I guess something wrong with my hard disk, so the bootloader can't recognize the filesystem type.

I'm trying to boot Emdebian Grip 1.0 built on Compact Flash on a mini PC with grub2 as bootloader. I had a LiveUSB of CentOS 5.5, so I decided the install it.With no installer,I just copied the files to my hard drive.his was in a multi boot with Windows 7, Ubuntu 9.10, and FreeDOS.I updated GRUB2 and it detected CentOS. I loaded my entry and it failed to mount the root filesystem.I took the initrd0 file from the LiveUSB syslinux folder and added that ramdisk to the entry. Now it finds the root filesystem (/dev/sda9 as Ext3).But it fails shortly after loading /sbin/init. It talks about an init error where it says "File not found!!!".The previous lines involved umounting old filesystems, like /dev.

A friend of mine upgraded his pc to ubuntu 10.04. Sadly enough we ran into issues with his graphics card, which apparently doesnt work well with lucid. We decided to downgrade to 9.10. I did this by installing over the old partition and chose to import the settings from the old account.The problems started when the pc booted for the first time:The list of kernels in grub2 was the one from 10.04.Somehow grub2 from the old installation seems to be still around and messes everything up. Any ideas how I could fix this?

I decided to try to do the 3 distro upgrade stretch from 8.04 to 10.04 this weekend and now I am hung on 9.04 to 9.10.. The upgrade went swimmingly, but I hit a wall upon boot. When I try to load kernel 2.6.31-22 I am greeted with the following error:

A maintenance shell will now be started ... After doing some digging I found this thread which appears to be similar in the inability to mount the filesystem. However, it does not mention the ACPI error. I tried everything in that thread; verifying device ID's, editing fstab options; running a filesystem check, and flipping the UTC option in the rcS file but nothing worked. The OP of that thread eventually did a fresh install of Karmic; but I would rather not have to go that far.

I've downloaded Fedora 12 and decided to try and install it on my old laptop which is currently running Ubuntu 9.10 with no problems.
When I boot from the live cd, it starts to load with the 3 bars on the bottom, one on top of the other, one is white, one is dark blue, the other is in between those colours in the spectrum somewhere....
Anyway, the load bars complete and "Fedora 12" turns white, then the following output populates:
mount: unknown filesystem type 'DM_Snapshot_Cow' (<----- repeated a bunch of times) can't mount root filesystem Boot has failed, sleeping forever.

I have a non-super user on my box which I'd like to give it MOUNT and UMOUNT permissions but I don't know how.For example purposes, the user name is "USER".I don't want to make it into a SuperUser, just give it rights to be able to issue the MOUNT and UMOUNT commands at the terminal.

When I installed OpenSuse 11.2 it mounted I configured to mount all of my windows/NTFS partition. However, one problem is that only root can write to it. I was trying to change it to '777' permission. However, as root I can't change permission. chmod doesn't work and neither does using nautilus (as root) work.I even tried unmounting it and then doing a chmod. That didn't work either.

Sometimes it starts and sometimes not. the RAM is memtest OK. The test detects a firmware in the micro hole 15 to 16 mb of memory. The rest is OK.
