I am an openSuSE user for many years. My current installation is openSuSE 11.2. However, my first was SuSE 6.4 and I have been _constantly_ upgrading since then until reaching the current openSuSE 11.2. The technical issue I have been facing lately is with the kernel version of my current system: although it should be 2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop, as this is the one I have chosen via the online update mechanism and the yast2 system boot-loader procedure, grub shows it as preselected, the boot procedure in the end greets me mentioning this very kernel version, _but_ when I issue the command: uname -a in a command prompt, I am informed of using linux kernel version: 2.6.18.2-34-default #1 SMP PREEMPT
I am really quite puzzled, since I _cannot_ find any such vmlinuz file under /boot/ ! Could it be that my system properly runs with the expected kernel version, but uname mistakes it with a different one? Is there a way to determine the actual version of the linux kernel that my system currently runs with? If it's a problem with uname, have you got any suggestions that could potentially shed some light towards the origin/cause of the reported issue?
I am having issues trying to compile the alsa-linuxtant module and I am getting errors about not being able to find some files and the source needing to be reconfigured. Anyway the developers told me to try compiling on a pristine source to see if I could compile that way. When I went looking at kernel.org I did not find a 2.6.32-5 version. So I did some checking and to see just what version I have.

Well, the first time the Opensuse resets the computer, after the installation (it was fine, w/o any problem) the system goes frezze showing a screen which reports a BUG ERROR in the Kernel code, specifically:

After a "button off" reset the machine boots fine and we could finish the configuration of the applications that we needed. We tested the machine by two days and it didn't show again the problem mentioned, and we believe it was a little bug in the installation, but today, the server halts again in the boot process 3 (three) times before it runs again well.We have repeated this installation in other computers, one in a 32 bit version and other in 64 bits version (like the Dell) and only in the last one has repeated the problem, I mean, no problems in the 32 bit installation. Fortunately, this new server is just a replacement for an old machine, that is running with the 10.3 version. Perhaps, does we continue using the 10.3 instead of the 11.3 meanwhile it is deputed?
I have a system running openSUSE 11.2 with Desktop and XEN kernel, as well as Windows 7 (not by choice though...). I have noticed a strange time issue, with Windows 7 and the desktop kernel the time is correct (like for example now: 1:32 PM) but in the XEN kernel it is ahead several hours (6:32 PM). If it was an issue between openSUSE and windows then I would think that it is a problem with the system clock but I don't know what would cause a time issue between kernels like that.

View 2 Replies View RelatedJust installed OpenSUSE 11.3 64-bit. I have a program that uses libjpeg, so I installed libjpeg and the dev modules. It has both version 6 and 8 installed. When I run my prog and try to access the lib I get this error: Wrong JPEG library version: library is 80, caller expects 62 This seems a common problem elsewhere. Anyone know how to fix it in 11.3 ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I installed fedora 11 the other day using the live CD it installed the i586 kernel and not the i686, despite the fact that smolt seems to know that that the hardware is i686 (well, actually it's x86, but I'm not going to argue because I forgot to get that one...). Why would it install the i586 one though? (uname -r 2.6.29.6-213.fc11.i586) But more importantly, are there any specific issues which this version can cause that I should be aware of? I can't really be bothered to change it at the moment if there is no real issue with it but I'm not too sure what difference it makes? Is it slower? It seems to know that I have a quad-core processor and seems to use them fine.

I've a physical machine with FC9 running vmware server 1.0.6 with 2 virtual machines. Each virtual machine is also running FC9. Everything was running smoothly until one day, one virtual machine stop. I've checked /var/log/messages of that machine and it says:

I am running ubuntu 10.04 with the fglrx driver installed with apt-get. I have an ATI Radeon HD AGP with 512MB of video ram. My bios window size is 64MB. The Xorg.0.log file shows that 512MB is recognized. I also tried checking the /proc/mtrr file and it shows two values one I believe is my ram size which looks to be correct at 1.5GB the other is 512MB which I think is my video ram size, but when I do an lspci -v the video ram size shows 256MB. I am trying to run Doom 3 and it only allows me to use 256MB of memory.

I have tried the two yum suggestions and they don't work I have tried updating the kernel and have installed kernel-devel-'uname -r' (suggested by another site) I have tried installing broadcom-wl and b43-openfwwf which only knocked out the card entirely
I have tried to 'rpm -ivh' the 2.6.34-8 image to the 2.6.31-5 on my Suse 11.2. Without any luck, rpm goes fine, however at the next bootup, then udev is about to be initialized, the machine goes down (don't see any message).
But if I install the MileStone 7 of 11.3 on the same machine, it works just fine.
Are there any scripts/howtos I have to follow if I upgrade from 2.6.31 to 2.6.34?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running 11.3 for about 4 months and it suddenly started to hang intermittently, sometimes many times a day. Once KDE restarted and other times the screen went black. Most of the time it was just hanging and I needed to force a shutdown. The only clue I got is KDE displayed a notification saying "Disabling IRQ #24" not long after it started to go nuts.
After searching around, I figured the problem was with my external video card so I pulled it out 2 days ago and so far it didn't freeze again. After searching around some more, I found many users fixed very similar issues by upgrading to kernel 2.6.35 and I am ready to go for this solution. But now, I couldn't find out how to upgrade the kernel. People said it can be done in Yast but I only see version 2.6.34. What is the easiest way to upgrade?

I am having issues after upgrading the Scientific Linux 6 kernel from its current 2.6.x version to the latest version that SL6 has available. The issue is that once I install the upgrade and reboot, the internet becomes extremely laggy when scrolling on web pages, so much so that you get a ripple like effect as your scrolling. Which doesn't occur in the current kernel i am using.
Current Kernel is: 2.6.32-71.18.2.el6
New Kernel RPM update is: 2.6.32-71.29.1.el6
I wish I could figure out the problem but I am having trouble identifying what exactly the current kernel has that the new one doesn't that would cause the internet lag. I have read other topics with similar kernel update problems, but none have expressed an internet problem & only an internet problem from a kernel update.
I did a kernel upgrade in openSUSE 11.2 which caused bootchart to fill the root partition or so it would appear as when I rebooted I started getting messages on the console saying bootchartd could not write because the device was full.

As you can see from the partition table I have 2GB allocated for the / partition and according to the df command there is 0 free space but du -hx shows / is only using 405MB. What's happened to the almost 1.6GB that should be available?
I've upgraded kernel 2.6.27.48-0.2-default to 2.6.27.54-0.1.1 on openSUSE 11.1. Before I tried to upgrade to 2.6.27.48-0.3-default where I encountered the same issue. After reboot it can not find the modules for 2.6.27.48-0.2-default which puzzled me to no end. Now I have found that the /boot which is on separate partition of ext2 type is not mounted. The mount command does not recognize ext2 and xfs anymore.
Clearly the initrd does not have the right modules. Since this is standard zypper up process I would expect this to work without issues since it has worked until the 2.6.27.48-0.2-default kernel without issues. Has something changed with the last 2 kernel versions that requires some extra actions from me and if so what do I have to do.
To run my other linux distros on another drive I have been manually entering the kernel and initrid info for each distro on the opensuse yast boot loader. For windows 7 it just runs the mbr on the drive windows 7 is on. However I can not get it to do that on the other linux drive. The problem for me is that on every kernel upgrade I have to manually change the info. I would rather have grub on the sdd linux disk take care of it on the upgrades. The drive that holds the other linux versions is sdd. Opensuse is on sdc.

Opensuse Linux (Linux sr-server 2.6.37.6-0.7-default #1 SMP 2011-07-21 02:17:24 +0200 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux). I have a very unusual problem where fdisk reports one size BUT df reports a TOTALLY different and unexpected size. Besides doing a full backup, repartition, reformat and restore, is there anything else I can try first??
