Debian :: 8.1 Jessie Very Slow Shutdown / Restart
Aug 25, 2015I have been a Debian user for some time already, and lately I experienced a weird behaviour regarding shutdowns/restarts. The thing is my computer shuts down very very slowly, but not because of HDD activity, nor because of CPU activity (as far as I know, I may be wrong). It stops at some point, and after that, it hangs between 5 seconds and... even 5 minutes. The time in which comes back to normal and continues the shutdown process varies and has absolutely no pattern.
This is where it hangs (the last line appeared because I disconnected the mouse):

Aug 21, 2015I am using Debian sid 4.1.3-1 and when i shutdown the system it takes 3 - 5 minutes before actually shutdown, there is only a black screen until the hdd led start flashing and after that the system finally shutdown. The weird part is that sometimes it happen in less than 30 seconds , how can i figure out where the problem is ?

Aug 21, 2011I have opensuse 11.4 (Gnome + KDE) installed. The problem is with Gnome. When in KDE, everything works fine. But in gnome, when I shutdown/restart, it merely logs off the session. Then I have to shutdown it from the menu in the login screen.

Jul 22, 2011After NFS mounting some system folders (i.e. lib, usr) of a slave cluster node to /lib & /usr located on the master cluster server I got into some problems: I forgot Ubuntu 10.04 was installed on this particular slave node, while the master node runs 9.10. Now, I am not able to unmount these folders using umount, or restart the system using shutdown, I get some error: " /lib/libblkid.so.1: version `BLKID_2.17' not found". Is there an alternative way to unmount these NFS shares, or to restart the system to undo the mounts? The systems are located elsewhere, so just physically restarting the system would not be the preferred option.

May 3, 2010For some time now, my laptop makes a quick but loud buzz sound when I shutdown or restart it. Muting my sounds doesn't fix it. Before, it didn't do this. It just started one day and got worse till it happened everytime I shutdown or restart.
Going to preferences > sounds > changing sound theme to no sounds helped a bit and after doing this, it doesn't happen all the time anymore. This is quite disturbing especially when I'm in libraries. What worries me the most though is that it might affect my speaker.
I'm using Karmic btw.
Debian Hardware :: Reboot / Restart Instead Of Shutdown (wheezy)
Oct 16, 2012Come across with a situation where all methods of shutdown result in a restart/reboot? I've tried commands:
- shutdown
- halt
- poweroff
.. with various parameters, nothing works. The laptop seems to power off, but after a sec it restarts/reboots. I've Googled high and low, but there's very little on this topic. Maybe it is specific to the current kernel in Wheezy? I'm not suspecting a harware failure, since this was not happening with Windows installed.
This happens on me with Wheezy on a HP Elitebook 8530w.

The system goes shutting down. Eveything looks fine, and the main console shows all process being stopped. In the end it says "System will now halt". Then a few seconds later, it restarts. It is unclear what is causing this, because nothing is written to the screen. It just goes blank and starts rebooting. Looking afterwards in syslog doesn't show anything also.
Debian :: Complete System Freeze During Shutdown?
Apr 1, 2010When I try to shut my PC down (press the shutdown button in KDE 4.3.4), the desktop quits, but the console screen does not appear (the CTRL+ALT+F1 screen). Well, technically speaking it appears but only a still (not blinking) cursor is shown, otherwise the whole screen is blank. This means that not only the X freezes but whole system, because the keyboard is unresponsive too. It happend multiple times now, and every time I reboot after such event, some kde rc files (amarokrc, kmailrc, etc...) get deleted due to the automated filesystem check (unclean umount), which means that I have to reconfigure these apps again.
My home partition is on a separate EXT2 partition (this way I have full r/w access from winxp) and every time this is the only one which gets corrupted. The system partition (which is EXT3) is always intact (no fsck starts on boot). I'm using Debian Squeeze by the way.

Jan 28, 2010I upgraded all xserver-xorg packages in my notebook. After restart system Xorg (GDM) don't run. My screen is black. If I will go to console CTRL+ALT+FX, screen is black too. I will go to console only in single-mode and I tried run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, but without results. I haven't got /etc/X11/xorg.conf in my system. I have got integrated Intel graphics card.

Apr 30, 2011I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)

I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.

May 17, 2010I have a recently new, less than 2 weeks old, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installl. It is a clean install since the prior install of 10.04 LTS decided it would no longer allow me to login.

But this PC have a problem, if once I shut it down I cant restart it again, but the next day it works properly. I tried in various operating systems like Windows XP service pack 2, pack 1, Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate 32bit and I have checked several times the BIOS settings properly but the problem is still the same.

When I try to re-login the screen (xorg) freezes. I don't know how to debug this problem. The problem could be related to hal or d-bus or policykit or X-org..... simply I don't know. N.B. I can shutdown and restart my machine only as "super-user" (root).

Jan 26, 2011I had my netbook which is an Acer AspireOne lock up on me once earlier today and after doing a hard shutdown *holding the power button* and booting it back up I noticed that I could no longer reboot the machine from KDE's graphical shutdown button. Basically I click it and it pops up with the 30 second count down and then nothing. However I can run as root,

and it will comply and reboot. I did notice that rngd was returning an exit status 1 and after some research decided to uninstall it with no change to anything. I decided to attempt and see if it was just a KDE issue as many problems have been, but when I attempted to log into Gnome I got a very nice white screen with one black line where the taskbar should be. Whether they are related or just coincidence I don't know.
I've ran my google researching skills into the ground on this one and I'm tired and a bit grumpy because I haven't been sleeping so it'd be awesome if I could get a heads up, because to my knowledge it's not reporting any errors it just seems to hang without sending the shutdown signals.

Software :: Firefox Will Not Restart After Shutdown?
Apr 21, 2010A few days ago an upgrade to FF 3.6.3 was pushed at me by Mandriva. I accepted it, of course.
Since then, firefox refuses to restart after a shutdown, and there are no error messages in any log or in the bash window if I try to start it that way.
I tried a couple of times to uninstall/reinstall it, but no joy.
Finally figured out that if I reloaded the .mozilla directory in my home directory from a daily backup, FF would restart.
This suggests that FF 3.6.3 is corrupting something either while it is running or when it shuts down.
It's pretty consistent, and makes it rather hard to use FF. The lack of error messages is making it rather difficult to sort out.

I'm in Ubuntu 9.10 (Ubuntu Studio actually) and my computer will not shut down properly. I get the splash, then a black screen, then something like #terminating processes, #closing connections, #blah blah blah, #will now halt(or will now restart if rebooting)
Fedora :: Shutdown And Restart Icons Have Disappeared?
Feb 7, 2010I'm running Fedora 11 with KDE desktop. Yesterday I installed several updates, including a kernel update. Now the Shutdown and Restart icons have disappeared from the Leave menu, which only contains the icons for "Logout", "Lock", "Switch User", "Suspend to Ram" and "Suspend to Disk". I had "Shutdown" and "Restart" icons in my Favorites menu, but when selected they open a "Logout" dialogue.
I can Shutdown and Restart from the command line, but would like to restore the capability to do it from the icons. Has anyone else experienced this and found a fix?

Dec 15, 2009Pressing the shutdown or restart buttons in XFCE simply logs me out and leaves the system running. I did some Googling and it was suggested that by default users don't have permission to shutdown. (not sure how this is a XFCE specific problem in that case but moving on...)
I've taken the following advice:
For a "desktop" system that wants to protect itself from casual attacks (and "puzzled penguins"), but still grant the user control of their system, run the following as "root":

polkit-auth --user $USER --grant $OPT
done
Where <your_userid> is the name of your unprivileged account. I wasn't entirely sure how to run it, so I stuck it into a shell script and ran that with the sudo command. Needless to say it hasn't worked. Is there an easy "sure fire" way to fix this problem, hitting the shutdown button repeatedly to test really grates on you after a while. BTW, Pressing the power button on the front of the system shuts it down okay.

May 3, 2010This is a really weird issue. I'm using 10.04 and on occasion when I boot into Ubuntu the sound doesn't work along with losing the ability to shutdown via the menu. When I click shutdown it just logs out. I need to shut down my PC by using the terminal.
It's strange because the sound and shutdown work as expected most of the time. The issue is seemingly random.

May 21, 2010I installed 10.04 on my old Dell Inspiron 600m laptop. After using it for about an hour, I was suddenly had no option to shutdown or restart the system when logged in on the main and only account. The 'Shut Down' applet on my bar was greyed out and the shutdown option was missing from the system menu.
I removed the 'Shut Down" applet and was unable to re-add it afterwards (wasn't a selection when adding to panel). If I log off, selecting shutdown or restart from the login screen does nothing.
'Sudo shutdown now' will shut it down, though it won't power the system off; it just hangs on an all-white screen.
I saw other posts suggesting Open Office Quickstart was the culprit, though I am not running this.
