OpenSUSE Install :: Suse 11.4 Installer Causes Reboot?

Jun 4, 2011

I am in possession of a new HP HPE-570f PC which I bought this morning. This has AMD Phenon 1090T and AMD Radeon HD 6770 graphics card. The OEM Windows 7 works fine. When I try to install Suse 11.4 using same DVD that works on my other (older) machine, I see the Suse Installation screen from which I select "installation", then comes the "Loading Linux Kernel" progress bar. As soon as the progress bar gets to the end, the computer reboots! Then of course I end up back at the Installation screen since the DVD is still in the drive.

I recently installed open SUSE 11.3 on my computer which I built myself and the problem I have is after rebooting the computer, I get a black screen. It will not boot the operating system. Here is my component specification:

Video Card: BFG GeForce 8800GTX 768MB 384-bit GDDR3 PCI Express
Motherboard: DFI LP DK 790FX-M2RS AM2+/AM2
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz

Another question is, where can I purchase SUSE 11.3 and if I do purchase, will I get help on the phone installing it ? Pleas keep in mind that I have little experience with SUSE Linux.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 / Turns To Blackscreen / Security Error?

Jan 6, 2011

I downloaded the ubuntu Desktop i3386 iso and followed the instructions to install from windows. I'm a windows 7 user. So after rebooting, I booted using ubuntu and as it was loading, I left my laptop idle for a few minutes and it suddenly booted windows 7. I restarted and booted ubuntu only to find that it has become command prompt format instead of the usual gui. Then when I tried to use it, it turns to blackscreen and the only thing that produces a response is by hitting the power. It then warns me that the power button has been pressed. The model of my loptop is Toshiba Satellite L640.It says it has security error. Will post later the details of the error.

And is there some sort of file constantly updated about open programs and once I reboot, this file is read by KDE during the boot-up and those previously open programs will be started automatically?

OpenSUSE Install :: System Reboot Fails During 11.3 Installation

Aug 3, 2010

I am trying to update my OS from Opensuse 11.2 to 11.3 using the installation DVD (checked OK). Everything is OK during the installation process until the message "System is going to reboot" is displayed with a countdown : when the countdown is finished, the screen becomes black and the screensaver starts, but the system does not reboot. When I reboot manually, after selecting "Opensuse 11.3 desktop" on the first menu, the screen becomes black and the screensaver starts.

So the installation seems incomplete and I do not know how to finalize it. When I select the failsafe option on the first menu, it seems to work but some behaviours are quite "strange"... When I choose update instead of installation at the beginning, the behaviour is the same.

I do not know if it is linked but the firmware tests started from the installation DVD show the following errors :

Memory tests are OK.

OpenSUSE Install :: ATI Driver Installation - After Reboot Got A Blank Screen

Apr 14, 2011

I Just installed OpenSuse 11.4-32 bit with KDE 4.6 on my PC. At first boot everything was working, then I added the community ATI/AMD repository to get the drivers for my ATI 5570, but after reboot i got a blank screen. So I ran the "failsafe mode" in the boot menu, it worked (3D accel. as well), but just for the root user. To make it work for the non-root user had to set the setuid bit for /usr/bin/Xorg. (is it ok to run xorg with superuser privileges?) Then I tryed to understand wich is the kernel option actually needed for X to start, and after a few attempts I realized the only option really needed is the "nomodeset". what is the nomodeset option for? and why I need it to run in the graphic mode?

OpenSUSE Install :: Fresh Install 11.4 Blocks At Splash Screen On Reboot

Jun 30, 2011

I ordered a SuSE 11.4 installation DVD from an online Linux Distro distributer that I've used before with no problems. I did this rather than burn my own DVD from the website. I thought that I might perform a fresh install of SuSE 11.4 on this Dell 1420 Laptop that is currently running Ubuntu 11.04.

Note, this is a completely fresh install, not a side-by-side installation with Ubuntu; I followed the installation sequence that completely repartitions the entire disk for SuSE, and accepted all of the suggested options regarding logon, etc.

Everything goes well ... sort of. The first install didn't reboot correctly, i.e., the set-up that is supposed to run after the initial install never happened and I had to manually power-down the machine and restart from the "safe mode." Needless to say, that didn't work as expected. So, I re-install, from scratch, trying different options: for instance, instead of LVM, I decide to have an un-encrypted partition scheme and accept the "obvious" options ... thinking that the LVM options interacted badly with the install. Eventually I get the installation to proceed correctly, or so it appears: it goes though the entire sequence, including the re-boot, building the default image, etc.

I test this image by removing the DVD, power-cycling the machine, and all looks good, so I begin the process of installing software updates, etc. Being paranoid, I re-boot the machine, and all restarts correctly, etc.

Now here's the annoying thing. The next day, I power the machine on, and it locks at the splash screen. By the way, these are the exact symptoms that I experienced with the bogus/incomplete installations. The boot sequence proceeds up to the splash screen and waits forever.

So, in sum: I spent inordinate amounts of time attempting to install this software, carefully following the instructions provided by the installer. In every instance, after leaving the machine off for a day or so and rebooting, I am met with a splash screen that sits forever. Needless to say, I am extremely reluctant to repeat another day of software installation to only have to re-start with no assurances of success. Either I go back to ugly Ubuntu (which has always worked out of the box, by the way), or I look at other options. I was hoping to use SuSE, but I really don't care which distro is on that machine as long as it works and it provides TeX, R, Emacs, Scheme, and a few other software packages that I'm sure are of no interest to your customer base.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 64bit Install Freezes After Reboot During Autoconfiguration - GeForce 9300 Chipset (MCP7A)

Sep 15, 2010

I just wanted to install openSUSE 11.3 64bit. Installation works fine until reboot request. It switches to console, saying that it tries to load without reboot, screen becomes black, i got a cursor with animated wait-symbol and then it freezes. Can't move the mouse, no reaction on keyboard inputs, HDD-led not blinking. If I reset my PC and boot the new installation, it says that an error occurred and asks me to complete the unfinished installation. It starts auto-configuration and freezes again at about 3%. I tried again and some time it did not start the graphical yast but in textmode. The freeze came at the same position, but it posted many lines on console with error messages. I could not scroll, so I saw only parts of it, saying kernel panic and many addresses.

I guessed that it has to do with my chipset and graphics card, it is a nVidia GeForce 9300 chipset (MCP7A) with onboard graphics. It works fine with openSUSE 11.2 64bit by the way, but it was not supported in earlier versions than 11.2. So I tried to install it with proprietary drivers. I started the installation again and added the nVidia repository and a Packman repo and selected the driver which works fine on 11.2. Error was same as above. Next I tried an openSUSE 11.3 32bit Live CD that came with some PC magazine and lay around and it is booting and works fine!

This was confusing to me, so I wanted to try the 64bit version of the live CD. Which was again not booting. It freezes at some part, maybe when it tries to start X. But it also freezes booting with 'nomodeset' (found it somewhere here), in VESA mode and even in textmode! So i guess it's not X what causes the freeze. But it is sometime at the end of booting up, as far as I can say. I would like to use the 64bit version but I don't know where to search for the problem. I checked every checksum before burning, so a broken media should not be the reason

OpenSUSE Install :: Panel Bar Changes After Reboot

I use the Air openSUSE theme for my panel bar, etc., yet, after rebooting (or starting up the computer after it has been shut down), the panel bar comes up as if it were configured with some kind of black theme, which I do not like - you can still see things like icons for windows, launcher, etc. except for the clock, since its font color is black.

How do I put a stop to this? I have tried everything I can think of, customized settings, different themes, and so on, yet I get the same results after booting into openSUSE.I am using the openSUSE 11.2 KDE version.

OpenSUSE Install :: Suse Install Formatted User Data

Sep 11, 2010

I have installed Suse on my Windows Vista 64bit machine a couple of times, but the last time I did it - after a disk change - presented some unanticipated problems. Prior to install, Windows Disk Management (whose output I was unable to paste into this question) showed that my disks were laid out as follows:

[Code].....

Disk 0 is a Seagate ATA drive, while Disk 1 is a Western Digital Ext HDD Usb Device. Looking back, I think I should have carved out a partition after M before installing Suse, but I was uncertain whether to make it a logical one or a primary, and in the past the installation has taken the 25 or so gig it needed from the last defined partition on disk 0. This time, however, it went after disk 1, and reformatted the entire drive, deleting about 300 gig of user data, including my system backup. What really suprised me is that it took up the entire drive: 2 gig for the swapfile, then a 20 gig partition, and all the rest for the third partition.

This is not what I would have expected. I especially would not have expected the installation to re-format user data. In any case, I did not want Suse on disk 1, so I reformatted the drive and then used my Partition Manager to rebuild the boot Mbr. So now, I am able to boot into windows, do not have Suse on my machine, but have lost critical data. My disks are now back to the way they were when I started (see above), except that drive F is now all free space, except for my latest backup. My question is how do I ensure, when I reinstall Suse, that it will choose disk0 for the installation and will not overlay any of the data that I have on that drive.

OpenSUSE Install :: Reboot Hangs At Many Points?

Am now 25 minutes into a reboot, hung at "Unmounting file systems" but it also hung for a while when changing run levels. Is this related to the stability problems with 11.1 I've read about? Possibly KDE? Where would I adjust a config to use kde 3.5 rather than 4?

OpenSUSE Install :: Reboot Directly To Another System?

Jul 7, 2010

in a previous version of openSUSE (I think it was v10.3), there was a possibility to directly/automatically start another OS after exiting (rebooting) openSUSE. This could be done through "right-clicking" on the Reboot (Restart) button from the KDE's log-off dialog and choosing the OS you wanted to be started after the restart. Please, does anybody know if this is possible in openSUSE 11.2 (KDE 4.4)? PS: I know that GRUB enables that, but I prefer a "GUI way" rather than using command line and editing configuration files
