OpenSUSE :: One-click Installation - Yast Manager Is Trying To Download Packages Other Than Vlc Which Account For About 1.5GB
Jul 16, 2011
I chose Opensuse as my first distro. The problem is, whenever i invoke any one click installation from any website, (for example vlc), the yast manager is trying to download packages other than vlc which account for about 1.5GB. But I can see that vlc comes to merely 40MB. How to remove those unwanted downloads? and continue to install only what we wanted? I am running opensuse 11.4 with gnome on my notebook

I isntalled Ubuntu 10.04 LTS in a dual boot configuration with Windows 7 (new i5 desktop, 8 GB DDR3) , and after a few gliches solved, Ubuntu runs. The problem I have is when I try to install software with the Synaptic Package Manager, no packages can be downloaded. Also, after I attempt this, no other software can connect to the Internet (even if that software was able to connect before). Rebooting restores connectivity.

Is it possible to configure Yast Software Manager module so that it does not completely exit when done installing a package? It get's annoying to search for a package and install it, the software manager exits, you then have to reopen it, install another etc. a few minutes later.
Seems this would be a config option, but if so I can't seem to find it.

Why does YaST close after one installs a package? Is there a way to disable this annoying feature?
System Specifications:
openSUSE 11.3 64-bit(installed from a Live CD)
KDE 4.5(error also occurred in KDE 4.4.4)

I'm not talking about YaST auto-resolving dependencies for me or the auto-updater checking for patches... sometimes, when I start up the Software Management portion of YaST, there will be a package or two marked for installation. Today, for example, it wants ksshaskpass. This is 11.2 64-bit. (I know I'm bucking the trend of 11.3 questions, but I'm hoping you can overlook that.)
Is this behavior expected? I don't think I ever noticed it prior to 11.2.

i finally managed to achieve minimal 11.2 system (following tutorial on this forum) but now whenever i try to install additional packages using yast, it automatically selects a whole bunch of unnecessary software. For example, installation of "radeonhd" tries to pull Mozilla Sunbird from repositories.
That's unacceptable behavior and no wonder system gets bloated over time. Is there a way to set yast to pull only crucial dependencies with selected packages (like apt-get's recommended and suggested packages)?

Using the Software Manager in YAST how do I determine who the packager of the file is? Is it appropriate to contact them and ask them to update the version?

I'm running OpenSuse 11.1 (this may be the thing that causes me to finally update ) with KDE 4.4 (specifically, 4.4.4 release 5). Recently (maybe the past month or so... give or take a week or two or so... first time I really remember it happening is when I realized they changed the repository for KDE 4.4 from factory to stable and switched them) >90% of the things I try to install via YAST fails with the following error... this example is me trying to upgrade avidemux from the Packman repository.
Code:
Error: RPM failed: warning: /var/cache/zypp/packages/Packman_Repository/x86_64/avidemux-2.5.3-4.pm.5.1.x86_64.rpm: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 9a795806 error: %post(avidemux-2.5.3-4.pm.5.1.x86_64) scriptlet failed, signal 11
Oddly enough, the main avidemux package threw the error, but the avidemux-qt4 package didn't.
I've tried doing

Error msg: YaST got signal 11 at YCP file PackagesUI.ycp:273./sbin/yast2: line 399: 30258 Segmentation fault $ybindir/y2base $module "$@" "$SELECTED_GUI" $Y2_GEOMETRY $Y2UI_ARGS
Got this most recently while trying to upgrade WINE from YaST Software Manager. Got a similar message for a different package that I recently installed, and just used zypper to do the install. I also used zypper to reinstall Yast2, but still got this error message. Running openSUSE 11.3, kernel 2.6.34.7, GNOME 2.30.

When trying to open YaST Software Manager, it downloads/refreshes repository information, but then, just when the loading bar indicates that the manager is about to open, a warning window pops up which says: "There was an error in the repository initialization." The program continues to open, but only packages that have already been installed are visible.

I know I should be able to do an online update using cl zypper but would much prefer to use Yast's sw manager as it's easier to review and respond to package issues that always arise (because of packages made by me or dl'ed from obs but from repos not enabled in the repo manager)currently running 11.2

it's a couple of weeks I can't perform YaST updates from my openSUSE 11.2. The reason is that YaST wants to connect to repositories "only" through IPv6, but my network doesn't support it. I quoted only because I suppose it prefers v6 over v4, but it keeps trying to connect without switching to v4 or returning error.
Even if I disabled IPv6 from YaST/Networking/Network Settings, I still have a local scope address. I connect to Wifi using KNetworkManager. The TCP/IP stack should know that if an interface has a local scope v6 address and a global v4 address, it's a bad idea to keep trying with v6. Italian mirror, garr.it, of openSUSE repository both has v4 and v6 addresses. If I try to ping opensuse.mirror.garr.it I ping v4, but if I try to telnet that host on port 80 it tries to connect to v6. Same if I try to connect with Firefox.
How to tell Linux that I don't have IPv6? I'm connecting from University of Naples wireless network. While unina has IPv6 via GARR's Teredo tunnel (2001:760::/32 as I remember), it doesn't reach students' network because DHCP server doesn't release IPv6, nor Zeroconf obtains one. I just would like to use classic IPv4 until, at least for now.

Looking for source code packages I have configured the "Main repository (Sources)" into the yast list of repositories. However when I select the repository view in th esoftware manager it shows this repository as empty. Other repositories work. I have checked the link to the repository to be valid. I have added it automatically from the "Community repositories".

I am meeting some problems on my opensuse 11.2 system in the last week, I see an higher load on CPU and the system seems to swap a lot of time. Checking on dmesg I found that at boot time I have a lot of errors: I paste a little part of the full log at the end of this post
If I am not wrong I have found and installed an official opensuse 11.2 kernel update through zypper some days ago Moreover, actually I am not able to use yast package manager because it seems to crash during repositories refresh (or just after it)

i am currently using monkey webserver on my linux machine for my website. I just recently found out that you can also stream music if you direct the web address to a folder inside the directory. The problem is when i try to click on a .avi all it wants to do is download the video instead of playing it in the browser or playing it in windows media player. What can I do to make an .avi to stream from my linux machine ( note this is for private use only so i can stream movies on my lunch break or when I am at a friends house this is not to share my stuff to the general public)

Zypper seems unable to reach the openSUSE servers. I am currently on a network that may or may not block certain traffic, so I don't know if their firewall is in the way. I am able to browse the web without any problems. Sometimes Zypper downloads proceed eventually, but the download is doggone slow. I did this code...
Apparently Zypper has trouble downloading this URI, but if I open it in Chrome it loads perfectly without any problems. How can I find the root of this problem?

Im new in this world of linux and suse. I have just installed the opensuse 11.2 in a Dell Inspiron 5160. Such laptop has a BCM4306 Wireless LAN controller. When I tried to configure a wlan connection, I found that the firmware was not installed. After looking in different forums, I installed the firmware b43. Now, my wlan card is abled to find the wireless of my router.
I have tried to configure a connection with YAST as well as with Network Manager, but both cases failled. Specifically, when I use Network manager, Im able to see in the applet my connection, how strong is the signal, but I see a yellow symbol (in one forum, such a box is shown with a green symbol).
I have check many time all about the secutity, encryption, and so one and all seems to be correct. But when I open the mozila firefox or the konqueror browser, no chance to surffer in internet. Now Im just a step to become crazy. The drivers are ok, the information about the router and the keys are ok, but in such a way, I am still harmloss.

I need a newer version of the nvidia drivers for opensuse 11.4. ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.4 has version 270.41.06 available, but I found that I need the 270.41.19 version for CUDA 4.0 to run (yes I know CUDA 4.0 does not officially support 11.4, but the same 270.41.06 is available for 11.2 which CUDA 4.0 does support).
Where can I download the files x11-video-nvidiaG02-270.41.06-5.1.nosrc.rpm and nvidia-gfxG02-270.41.06-4.1.nosrc.rpm that these binaries were created from? Once I have the source rpms, I can easily update them to the newer version.

How do you mannually set up a network using Yast/ifup? I'm trying to get my wireless running on a Broadcom 1390 WLAN. I've gone through the stickies in the wireless forum (this is my first stab at Linux) and have gotten the drivers installed and the internet working (albeit intermittently) using Knetwork manager. It seems that some folks that have had the same issue did not have problems setting the network up manually with Yast & ifup. I've disabled network manager in Yast, and I went through man ifup. It seems I need a "pre-configured interface," but I don't know how to make that happen.

It's on a desktop that has a dialup modem but no other Internet access (and I haven't even gotten the modem working yet...). So I have it hooked up to a Win2K laptop on the network that is Sharing its (dialup) Internet connection.I can take the laptop to the public library and leech off their wifi to download stuff at much higher speeds. It's not practical for me to take the desktop to the library... Is there a way for me to use the Windows laptop (at the library) to download the packages Update Manager tries to get for Ubuntu, bring it home, transfer them to the Ubuntu desktop, and have Update Manager just install 'em from there?

The other night I tried to upgrade my system to Karmic Koala. The machine took forever to download the packages and when it was almost completed, the installation phase in the Update Manager suspended. Both keyboard and mouse weren't responsive so I was forced to shut the system down manually. Now when I boot up, it loads the desktop, a dialogue box pops up stating there's an Apt Authentication issue. When I click "Run this action now" it opens a window showing it is about to download 15 packages.
But unfortunately before it can load, the system hangs. If I reboot, close the dialogue box and try to use the Update Manager as a means to correct the problem, the same thing happens. In addition to trying to find a solution, I'm keen to avoid doing a full, clean install, as I don't want to lose the system configs and data (I've got 200gb in music files and use the system as a music server). I've also tried to load in "recovery mode" but it doesn't load properly.

I personally use GNOME gwget, but what is your favorite? I'm creating this thread out of curiousity to see if there is a better download manager. I generally use a download manager because of the better resuming support than just Firefox's download manager, as I have an unreliable internet connection.

I'd like to find out if it's possible to download and store (not install) official Ubuntu installation files, and then choose to install them whenever. I don't always have internet available and having to be connected every time I want to install a program really sucks. What happens if I had to format or something and I just wanna install all my programs again but no internet connection? Is there also away I can back up my Ubuntu and when I restore, I get all my downloaded and installed programs back, without having to re-install?
