OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Use YaST Software Manager In 11.2 - Gnome?

Feb 24, 2010

When trying to open YaST Software Manager, it downloads/refreshes repository information, but then, just when the loading bar indicates that the manager is about to open, a warning window pops up which says: "There was an error in the repository initialization." The program continues to open, but only packages that have already been installed are visible.

OpenSUSE :: Gnome Install Using YaST Over KDE

Feb 24, 2010

From a fresh install of OpenSuse 11.2 64 bit the default is KDE. But if you want to install both KDE and Gnome on the same machine. I got to Yast --> Patterns --> And tick Gnome Desktop Environment and Gnome Base System.

That inturn pops up with a dependency issue. That states the following:
#### YaST2 conflicts list - generated 2010-02-24 13:18:37 ####
pattern:gnome-11.2-20.22.1.x86_64 requires patterns-openSUSE-gnome, but this requirement cannot be provided
uninstallable providers: patterns-openSUSE-gnome-11.3-1.1.1.i586[http-download.opensuse.org-ae9db630]
patterns-openSUSE-gnome-11.3-1.1.1.x86_64[http-download.opensuse.org-ae9db630]
patterns-openSUSE-gnome-11.2-20.22.1.x86_64[openSUSE 11.2-0]
patterns-openSUSE-gnome-11.2-20.22.1.i586[repo-oss]
patterns-openSUSE-gnome-11.2-20.22.1.x86_64[repo-oss]
[ ] do not install pattern:gnome-11.2-20.22.1.x86_64
[ ] break gnome by ignoring some of its dependencies
[x] deinstallation of patterns-openSUSE-kde4_pure-11.3-1.1.1.x86_64
#### YaST2 conflicts list END ###

So my question is what exactly does removing and applying the Gnome pattern do. Because it seems to change alot more than just branding. It changes the default environment to GTK. How would go about reverting the pattern back to KDE after the install of all the correct Gnome Dependencies.

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Use Yast Package Manager Because It Seems To Crash During Repositories Refresh

Jan 12, 2010

I am meeting some problems on my opensuse 11.2 system in the last week, I see an higher load on CPU and the system seems to swap a lot of time. Checking on dmesg I found that at boot time I have a lot of errors: I paste a little part of the full log at the end of this post

If I am not wrong I have found and installed an official opensuse 11.2 kernel update through zypper some days ago Moreover, actually I am not able to use yast package manager because it seems to crash during repositories refresh (or just after it)

OpenSUSE Install :: Install Error - Config Defaults For GNOME For GNOME Power Manager Have Not Been Installed Correctly

Mar 4, 2010

Things were running fine until GNOME misbehaved;

GNOME failed to load telling me:

Install error, Configuration defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly.

So I

Code:

To the shell and check the logs in gdm and find this:

Could not ask power manager if user can suspend, launch helper exited with unknown return code 0.

So I try

Code:

To see if another user will get the desktop; I get the error

Cant create etc/passwd no space left on device.

So I

Code:

And get the following

I insert a usb drive to prepare for back up; Run

Code:

On the shell to get the usb device name; Then run

Code:

To mount the device.

I end up with:

Cant create lock file /etc/mtab~ 4610 No space left on device(use -n flag to override)

So, I

Code:

And see 9 partitionitions

Code:

Again to check which ones are loaded at boot up time and get

plus some other file systems mounted at boot up, but not mapping to any physical partitionition.

I try

Code:

On partition9 and get warnings because its mounted, so I chicken out and try

Code:

And run into the error:

cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4832 no space left on device (use -n flag to override)

Good thing is there is a

Code:

Since space is a problem, I

Code:

On partition6 which is not mounted at boot up time and try to

Code:

I still get the error

cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4735 no space left on device (use -n flag to override

Code:

For package update tells me

cant open /var/run/zypp.pid in mode w

Code:

For power management tells me its not even recognised as a command.

OpenSUSE Network :: YaST Package Manager Wants IPv6?

Apr 12, 2010

it's a couple of weeks I can't perform YaST updates from my openSUSE 11.2. The reason is that YaST wants to connect to repositories "only" through IPv6, but my network doesn't support it. I quoted only because I suppose it prefers v6 over v4, but it keeps trying to connect without switching to v4 or returning error.

Even if I disabled IPv6 from YaST/Networking/Network Settings, I still have a local scope address. I connect to Wifi using KNetworkManager. The TCP/IP stack should know that if an interface has a local scope v6 address and a global v4 address, it's a bad idea to keep trying with v6. Italian mirror, garr.it, of openSUSE repository both has v4 and v6 addresses. If I try to ping opensuse.mirror.garr.it I ping v4, but if I try to telnet that host on port 80 it tries to connect to v6. Same if I try to connect with Firefox.

How to tell Linux that I don't have IPv6? I'm connecting from University of Naples wireless network. While unina has IPv6 via GARR's Teredo tunnel (2001:760::/32 as I remember), it doesn't reach students' network because DHCP server doesn't release IPv6, nor Zeroconf obtains one. I just would like to use classic IPv4 until, at least for now.

OpenSUSE :: Yast Different Interfaces In KDE And In Gnome?

May 6, 2011

I have opensuse 11.4 with gnome and kde, being kde the default wm. I have noticed that the interface of software management in yast in gnome is different from that in kde. There are several differences in interface and behavior but the most noticeable are the ones bellow. In gnome, in the bottom left corner appears a list of the number of all available, not installed, installed and upgradable applications. This is very practical because when I want to update applications all I need to do is to click on list of upgradable apps and all of them appear filtered on the right side allowing me to choose wich to upgrade. In kde no matter what view mode I choose that list never appears and this becomes very complicated since kpackagekit is very, very slow to build the list of apps to update. Furthermore, in gnome when I choose packages to install bellow the lists appears a link to view changes. Clicking there displays a list of all apps that are to be installed, the size of disk space that will be used and the size of files to download. On the other hand in kde all I can do is to click accept and everything starts to be installed without advice. Since I have a slow internet connection it takes much time to wait to kpackagekit to load the list of softwares. And I need to know the size of a download before engaging in it, because it may delay very much depending on its size. Currently I use kde as default and do everything in it almost all the time, but when I have to do some install I stop every activity in kde logout and login in gnome to do it. Sometimes it's boring but I have lived with this. However I have tried to get used to kde for all my activities because in next versions probably gnome will come with many changes. Indeed, since I like traditional menu and panel config I don't think I'll be able to tolerate gnome shell and don't know for how long gnome 2 will exist and be supported. So is there a way to launch yast software management in kde but with gnome interface or at last with the functions of gnome interface?

OpenSUSE Network :: Configure A Connection With YAST As Well As With Network Manager?

Feb 1, 2010

Im new in this world of linux and suse. I have just installed the opensuse 11.2 in a Dell Inspiron 5160. Such laptop has a BCM4306 Wireless LAN controller. When I tried to configure a wlan connection, I found that the firmware was not installed. After looking in different forums, I installed the firmware b43. Now, my wlan card is abled to find the wireless of my router.

I have tried to configure a connection with YAST as well as with Network Manager, but both cases failled. Specifically, when I use Network manager, Im able to see in the applet my connection, how strong is the signal, but I see a yellow symbol (in one forum, such a box is shown with a green symbol).

I have check many time all about the secutity, encryption, and so one and all seems to be correct. But when I open the mozila firefox or the konqueror browser, no chance to surffer in internet. Now Im just a step to become crazy. The drivers are ok, the information about the router and the keys are ok, but in such a way, I am still harmloss.

How do you mannually set up a network using Yast/ifup? I'm trying to get my wireless running on a Broadcom 1390 WLAN. I've gone through the stickies in the wireless forum (this is my first stab at Linux) and have gotten the drivers installed and the internet working (albeit intermittently) using Knetwork manager. It seems that some folks that have had the same issue did not have problems setting the network up manually with Yast & ifup. I've disabled network manager in Yast, and I went through man ifup. It seems I need a "pre-configured interface," but I don't know how to make that happen.

OpenSUSE :: How To Install Vuse 4.3 Via RPG / YaST In Two Clicks

Jan 29, 2010

If you go to Vuze: The most powerful bittorrent client in the world. you'll see that you can download a tarball for linux. But, if you're like me, you'd rather get the RPG so you can use YaST to install it, allowing you to add vuze to your application launcher and desktop. After digging through google for the rare RPG files for the latest version of vuze.

Step 1: Download the swt libraries RPM here: ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/packman.i...m.6.1.i586.rpm - ( original link found on this page )
Step 2: Download the Vuze RPM here: ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/packman.i...1.1.noarch.rpm (original link found on this page)

The Vuze package needs the swt libraries pre-installed, so download that one first. In just two clicks, you'll have the latest version of Vuze installed by YaST on your system! BTW, this is my first post and first thread in these forums. I just installed SUSE on Tuesday and it's my first Linux OS I've tried.
