OpenSUSE :: Live Cds Why Use Kernel-default

Jun 2, 2011

There is something what confuses me:

- I thought that the kernel-desktop is the one optimized for desktop usage
- The KDE and Gnome live cds are used by people who want to use their OS as a desktop. I mean I doubt that anyone would install a KDE live cd on a server

So the live cds why have the default kernel installed on them? Just of curiousity, it is not a big deal to remove the default kernel and install the desktop one, but if the desktop kernel gives better experience on the desktop, that one should be used on the live cds too.

OpenSUSE Install :: Differences Between Kernel Default And Kernel Desktop?

Jul 21, 2010

differences between Kernel Default and Kernel Desktop? I've found some past threads like this link and this other link, and some other google info, which suggest the only difference would be the io scheduler. Also, I see the default grub choice is "Desktop" and not "Default", so I take this as a suggestion to prefer one over the other.

However, my broadcom 4312 wireless only works on the "default" and not on the "desktop" kernel, so I guess there must be other differences. I just want to evaluate which one is the less long-term risk option to go.

OpenSUSE :: Freezing 11.3 -kernel 2.6.34.4-0.1-default I686

Sep 15, 2010

I have Opensuse 11.3 with kernel 2.6.34.4-0.1-default i686 and use KDE4-4.5.1 from the new OpenSuse repo. My system sometimes freezes while using Firefox or Chrome and also sometimes playing with Kpatience or browsing images with Gwenview.

My video card is an old Sapphire Radeon working with radeon module and desktop effects are off. The only way to bring up the system is hard resetting. I tried also the desktop kernel with no difference.

OpenSUSE Install :: Kernel Panic When Booting Live Gnome Or Dvd

Jul 4, 2011

I've currently have opensuse 11.3 installed on my system and I would like to do a new fresh install of opensuse 11.4. I therefore downloaded the DVD 11.4 x64 install. However, when booting the kernel from the DVD (that leads to the installation procedure) I obtain the following error message "unable to handle kernel paging request". The system then stops and I need to perform a hard reset to restart again. The same happens if I try do boot from the live gnome CD. Thus, I'm unable to install opensuse 11.4 at all due to this problem. A possible solution would be to perform a hot update (i.e. changing repositories in my 11.3 and perform a zypper refresh and zypper dup). But I'm a bit scared of doing this since this will install the problematic kernel. how to circumvent this problem ? Is there any updated version of the live CD? I've been able to install opensuse 11.4 x64 without problems at home. Now I'm trying to install it at work. The current kernel (at work) is:

[code]....

OpenSUSE Hardware :: USB Disks Keep Waiting During Use In 11.3 -kernel 2.6.34.4-0.1-default I686

Sep 15, 2010

I'm using OpenSuse 11.3 with last kernel 2.6.34.4-0.1-default i686 and KDE4-4.5.1 from the new repo. When I reproduce a video from one of my USB disk, after a while it stops waiting for the disk, then go on. This behavior is not related with the program used to reproduce (Kaffeine, Mplayer, VLC) and is present in both my USB disks, one with ext3 fs and the other with ntfs fs.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Loads Debug Kernel Not Default / Change It?

Dec 23, 2009

Recently, I upgraded 11.1 to 11.2. Everything seemed to go fine. However, for some reason the system boots with the debug kernel - 2.6.31.5-0.1-debug. According to Yast every kernel under the sun seems to be loaded on the system. Grub, however, gives two choices - one for the regular and one for the failsafe system. They both boot to the debug kernel.

How do I get this thing to load into the regular, as opposed to the debug, kernel?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Error - Kernel: [time] Sisfb: Mode 'none' Not Supported Anymore. Using Default

Aug 7, 2010

I have just upgraded to 11.3 and work in icewm (I have kde apps installed but no other desktops). When I boot up the computer it gives me this console error message:

Code:
kernel: [time] sisfb: Mode 'none' not supported anymore. Using default.
kernel: [time] sisfb: Fatal error: Unable to reserve 16MB framebuffer memory
kernel: [time] sisfb: Is there another framebuffer driver active?
Apart from that I'm not exactly sure what the problem is. The computer isn't displaying immediate symptoms to me. I checked the hardware sticky and when I have a few hours I can work through

HTML Code:
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Configuring_graphics_cards but I don't have that kind of time at the moment, so I wanted to check that that was the route I should be going down before I did. I googled this stuff but everything seems to start from a knowledge base above mine and leaves me clueless.

Ubuntu / Apple :: The Default Option Is "live" Bla Bla Bla But In Case Of Problems Use "Live Video=ofonly"?

Apr 22, 2011

I've got an old iMac g3 on which I'd like to install Ubuntu Dapper Drake. Here's the problem:I insert the disk in the computer.Keep pressing "C" till this comes out:Quote:"The default option is "live" bla bla bla but in case of problems use "Live video=ofonly"I write "Live".The orange progress bar appears, but the the screen becomes black.I still can hear sounds: the classic ubuntu log-in music, but I can not see anything: I guess the live has started, but the screen is just black.By pressing CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE I'm able to come back to shell.

Once rebooted, I try "Live video=ofonly".Again the orange progress bar, but then this message comes outQuote:"Failed to start the X Server, It is likely that is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the server output to diagnose the problem?"Even if I dont select anything, some random words appear in the screen, too fast for me to read them. Then I'm back to shell.I read here (that the problem is caused by Xorg and that the solution can but editing his configuration by using Quote:sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.confBut I just don't know when to do that: Ubuntu is not installed yet and there is only MacOS 9.2 on that machine.

OpenSUSE :: Getting Rid Of Unused "Default" Kernel?

Jun 29, 2011

So i finally got my other netbook back, and decided i would try suse 11.4 + gnome 3 on it. So i did a clean install from the gnome 3 live cd.After installation i noticed i got the default kernel, instead of the desktop one, so i went to yast->add/remove software and installed the kernel-desktop and kernel-desktop-base,then i went to the bootloader settings app in yast and set the default boot kernel to the new desktop one.

I restarted, and went to add remove software again, to remove the "default" kernel, and removed the kernel-default package, then i went to bootloader settings and noticed that there is still an entry for the "default" kernel, i assumed that once i removed it, its entry in grub would be gone?So i went again to add/remove software, to veryfy that the default kernel had been removed, and it was, but i noticed that kernel-default-base is still installed. And when i try to remove it, yast tells me that to uninstall that package, it has to install kernel-default

Ubuntu :: Changing The Default Live CD Desktop Appearance?

Mar 25, 2010

recently I have been trying to create the perfect custom ubuntu .iso to write to a usb drive so i could carry around a live cd version of my current desktop operating system. I have 2 problems...

1: using various tools like Remastersys, Ubuntu Customization Kit, and Ubuntu's own LiveCDCustomization tutorial I have managed to install most of the packages that I want.... Truecrypt is not in the repos and i would very much like it on my custom live cd. while in chroot i tried using wget to download it then extract and install it, but i got a 404 error so it did not seem to be connecting to the place to download it. is there a workaround to getting truecrypt to install into my extracted squashfs? would it be possible to download the packages to my desktop then copy them over to my chroot squashfs to be installed?

2: I have not been able to customize the default appearance of the desktop environment like the background, icons, colors, window border, panels, applets, and so on.... Ubuntu's tutorial states that I need to edit .xmls in /etc/gconf but i do not understand how to edit those to get what I want. LiveCD creates a new user with default settings everytime it is started so its a matter of editing the files that control the settings of a new user.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading Kernel On A Live-cd?

Mar 15, 2010

I am building a live-cd using live-helper on Karmic (9.10). The process executes fine and I am able to build a live cd of ~200MB in size with minimal and xfce. But things does not work if I try to upgrade the kernel with the one of them from [URL] site. Ubuntu kernel team publishes the kernel for testing and I would like to upgrade the kernel for testing. But when I upgrade the kernel from inside the live-helper's interactive shell, it upgrades fine and iso gets created. While booting, it loads the kernel and errors out with the following message:

Code:
(initramfs) mount: mounting aufs on /root failed: No such device.
aufs mount failed.

I am running initramfs after installing the new kernel (a .deb file) using dpkg.

What else should I need to do for getting this to work?

Fedora :: Default 32 Bit Kernel Support More Than 4GB?

Feb 18, 2010

I just want to know what is the default Fedora 32 bit kernel - does it support more than 4G memory. I would like to save myself from compiling custom kernel and all following fiddling (nvidia drivers, virtualisation software etc) and 64bit OS is not for me - too many apps that I need are missing, of poor quality or need more manual intervention. Actually if bigmem / whatever it is called is configured in the default kernel, this may be the reason to switch. I intend to use 4 to 8 GB memory and it's a desktop, so server builds (like Ubuntu) are not for my taste.
