OpenSUSE :: How To Adjust CD Mounting Behavior

Feb 19, 2010

Under Suse 11.1 & KDE 3.5, when a CD was inserted, the disk was automatically mounted at /media/cd-label. With 11.2 & KDE 4, I get a pop-up from the task bar, from which I must select the CD, and then select the Open With File Manager option. Then (and only then) is the CD mounted at /media/cd-label.Is there a setting that I can change that will eliminate the requirement for all the mouse clicks and just have a CD automatically

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Strange WiFi Behavior Breaks Connection Repeatedly

May 30, 2011

I have recently upgraded to 11.4 and also had to renew an AP (HP ProCurve 10ag). This was several years old but replaced an identical model which had been working well until recently. I thought it would be appropriate to flash newer firmware as the device four releases behind the times. The access point serves partner's XP laptop and my openSUSE 11.4 laptop and after flashing the firmware both machines would make a connection and then break and remake, to the extent that the openSUSE machine became unusable. I thought it was an encryption problem and spent hours changing the AP and Client setups to no avail

After reading a thread here I checked out dmesg and this is what I found:-
[78.639247] wlan0: authenticate with 00:1d:b3:4b:ae:14 (try 1)
[78.640804] wlan0: authenticated
[78.642507] wlan0: associate with 00:1d:b3:4b:ae:14 (try 1)
[78.651195] wlan0: RX AssocResp from 00:1d:b3:4b:ae:14 (capab=0x411 status=0 aid=1)
[78.651200] wlan0: associated
[78.652222] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): wlan0: link becomes ready
[78.652283] cfg80211: Calling CRDA for country: DE
[78.674378] cfg80211: Regulatory domain changed to country: DE .....
This went on and on.

OpenSUSE :: KDE-new & Recent Devices-widget-bad Behavior After Optical PATA-SATA Swap

Feb 2, 2011

openSUSE 11.3, 2.6.34.7-0.7-desktop, KDE 4.4.x, 3.0-P4, 2.5g mem. I replaced PATA-OEM optical drive with SATA-OEM works fine with all apps outside of and except with this widget. No problems until the swap. I have performed some updates and I have not put the PATA drive back in to see if the behavior changed because it was failing. It could be an update but the optical drive swap is my first suspect. This now. If I hover cursor over notifier widget icon "last plugged in device" will pop up with accurate last device until a click on the widget icon and selection of action for the recently plugged in device. Selected actions work fine ... once.

Then it no longer updates the new or retains the previous DVD/CD (or any USB external drive when connected) entry. Closing after viewing but with out selecting an action results in an empty list also. The menu remains empty there after and only removal of the widget and reinstall makes the devices appear again ... once. Then the behavior repeats if the widget is removed and reinstalled. I was wondering if this is likely to be a udev/rules.d problem related to the swap of the optical drives? The 70-persistant-cd.rules file shows two cd's after the swap:

[Code]...

If I delete or rename the 70-persistant-cd.rules file in udev/rules.d will it truly be recreated at boot and might it this fix the issue? Should I look elsewhere first at some var logs for errors? Reinstall 11.3 and let auto detect and config sort it out is also and option but I'd rather not, heh.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Sporadic Hotplug (auto-mount) Behavior In 11.3 On A 64bit Machine?

Nov 8, 2010

I have a new 64 bit workstation (Dell Vostro i7) which I usually keep running for extended periods (read; days and weeks). I have realized that the system completely ignores when I insert a USB stick (LaCie 8Gb USB Key). By ignore, I mean it doesn't get mounted, and /media/ is empty. Interesting enough if I go into YAST and probe for Hardware Information, I find my USB stick there under the USB section. There is no specific entry for the key in /etc/fstab by the way, as far as I know I don't need to specify how a USB stick should be mounted. Auto-mount, when it actually works, is perfectly fine.

OpenSUSE :: Adjust Click Time Response

Mar 8, 2010

how do you adjust the response time of the taskbar menus, such as when you click on the start button on the bottom left of the desktop? My problem is that when I click them, it would delay for about 1 second before popping up the menu. But right-clicking on the desktop popped out fine without any delay though. Is this normal? Where do I adjust the settings for this? I have configured my ATI graphics card succesfully. Direct rendering, desktop animation and everything else is working fine btw.

OpenSUSE Install :: How To Adjust The Screen Resolution

Jul 17, 2010

Suffering from the expected error in detecting my video properly when installed 11.3.Have intel 915G onboard video. Up until 11.1 Opensuse struggled with loading this correctly. in 11.1 & 11.2 all was well. A couple of minor tweaks in sax2 and it worked perfectly. Now hat sax2 has gone I'm not sure how to make these minor tweaks.

My problem is I have been forced to a screen resolution of 1024X768 VGA Following the readme file adding nomodeset at boot fixes the problem but of course forces me back to an old video driver with pretty poor performance. Is there any way I can change the screen resolution and set the correct monitor - any GUI replacement for sax2? Krandrtray will only let me set a max res of 1024x768. I need to set res to 1280x1024

where the time to display media notifications is stored? When I put a CD or DVD into the player slot, a popup window shows possible actions to take but these old eyes can't read it fast enough to get through the list. Is it possible to get it to display longer and if so how?

When I put an audio CD in the slot, the display says there are six (6) actions possible but I only have time enough to read the first 2 or 3.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3: Where To Adjust X11 Timeout Parameter Affecting Boot

Mar 13, 2011

Computer boots up fine, but drops to commandline as it tries to go to the desktop. Just logging in and issuing "startx" brings up the desktop and all is well.

The Xorg logfile gives no fatals or clues (at least to me), but the "warn" file in /var/log gives the following at the end:

Mar 13 13:25:43 xxxxxxxx kdm[2328]: X server startup timeout, terminating
Mar 13 13:25:43 xxxxxxxx kdm[2328]: X server for display :0 can't be started, session disabled

Yesterday was fine, and never had it before; no harware changes (still same ATI 4770 and ATI 11.2 driver), nor BIOS changes/updates, for ages. First boot today this started. Does it continuously.

how I might slightly increase X's timeout parameter a bit, if this is the problem?

OpenSUSE Network :: Mounting A Cifs Share As Normal User In OpenSuse 11.4?

Apr 2, 2011

Q: How can I allow my users to mount a cifs share without an entry in fstab in OpenSuse 11.4?

I have an answer myself. Until OpenSuse 11.2 I could mount my samba shares by making mount.cifs and umount.cifs setuid root. Today I installed OpenSuse 11.4. Unfortunately mount.cifs isn't anymore allowed to be setuid due to security concerns. Security is not an issue in my case, so I copied the mount.cifs and umount.cifs from 11.2 to make it work again:

1. Download cifs-mount-3.4.2-1.1.3.1.x86_64.rpm from this repository (I use 64 bit):
2. Extract the files mount.cifs and umount.cifs from the rpm and copy them to /sbin
3. Make them setuid root:

Code:
linux-y5qw:~ # chmod u+s /sbin/mount.cifs
linux-y5qw:~ # chmod u+s /sbin/umount.cifs
4. Mount your cifs shares as a normal user:

Code:
martin@linux-y5qw:~> /sbin/mount.cifs //192.168.2.2/data /home/martin/data/ -ousername=martin

Networking :: Mounting Permissions Error / Mounting A Windows Host?

May 28, 2009

I am having permissions errors every time I try to mount a windows host. I have a linux server and all the windows computers can see that computer and its files, but we wanted to start backing up the linux machine to one of our other computers. so I tried to mount one of the computers. here is the sequence of events:

Code:
$mount -t cifs //192.168.1.194/Admin$ /mnt/Anita-comp
password: (I have no password so I left it blank)
Mount error (13): Permission Denied
I tried all sorts of passwords we use around the office and none of them worked.

I then decided to try mounting one of our other computers. this one looked like it worked fine. no error messages at all. (I left password blank) so I look in my filesystem and the mounted drive is not in the /mnt/Anita-comp file. What gives?

OpenSUSE Network :: 11.3 And Mounting Buffalo NAS?

Jul 18, 2010

I am running openSUSE 11.3 and I have a Buffalo LS-CH1.0TL NAS (it doesn't support NFS) that has all of my media and backup files stored on it. I can access the NAS just fine in Dolphin, but when I try to setup a music folder in any of the media programs (Amarok, Banshee, Rhythm Box) I am confined only to the drive on my computer. There are no options to browse a network share.

So, I guess I have to mount the drive. How do I do this? Is there a GUI I can use to do this, or is this something I need the command line to do? If so, what's the code I need to input to my fstab?
