i run right now digikam and rebuild my thumbnails. It seems like that this task takes a lot of cpu power and its not digikam itself, rather xorg takes the load. Is this right? I just wonder.

I just posted about this in this thread, but as the other thread was started by a KDE user then I thought I'd post here as well. I've had high CPU usage for a few months now - probably since trying the 0.9 branch of Compiz then dropping back to the default openSUSE builds (XOrg and gconfd-2 running a Core i5 at about 30% on every core*). I've now finally found a solution after deciding I wanted to fix it once and for all.
Once again, the Ubuntu forums come to the rescue with this thread (I don't like the distro as a whole, but I do find the forums useful!). I'm using Compiz, but it turns out that Metacity was running as well. A quick "killall -9 metacity" and the gconfd-2 process has vanished and XOrg settled down to its normal 1-2% (which is reasonable when I've got a Conky config refreshing every fraction of a second to repaint a sound visualiser!). Now I just need to find out why Metacity starts when I'm using Compiz...
* according to Conky's per-core graphs, although top only reported 15% overall and the Conky "top 3 procs by CPU" reported a measly 3% for each process, so someone's maths was out somewhere!

When I run tvtime with the desktop effects enabled Xorg, compiz and tvtime use a lot of cpu. It's even worse with tvtime in full screen. This doesn't happen with the desktop effects off or when I use vlc for example. The system is a 3GHz P4 Prescott, 1.7GB Ram, Nvidia FX5500. I'm running 11.3 with the nvidia video driver (173.14.27).

I have a problem with Xorg, I am not sure if the black screen is related, but sometimes when I am just using the computer, with heavy processor and memory, but sometimes not, but the title bars to the programs disappear, my compiz effects quit working, and the cairo dock becomes unusable, so I cannot switch windows, but I can close them using 'File > Close" to access the windows under the ones on top, and to fix it I have to switch over to a terminal "Ctrl + Alt + F2" and log into that to kill Xorg by "sudo top" and killing it with the PID.
And the Blanking Screen, I am just doing usual programming with Bluefish, Eclipse and the terminal, and the screen will just go black, and won't come on if I wiggle the mouse, press a key on the keyboard or turn it off and back on, the status light on the monitor stays green, and doesn't go to orange as if it were unplugged or the computer went idle, so I know that it is still communicating with the monitor, but the way I fix this is I have to manually power down the machine via the power button and turn it back on and it works normally for a while.

I recently tried to plug in a second monitor to my graphics card in an attempt to mess around with a dual monitor set up. This created a duplicate effect (which I expected at first) but downgraded my original monitor to the second monitors max resolution. Now my xorg.conf appears to be blank and I dont believe my fglrx drivers are working anymore.
When I try to start compiz from bash I get the following:
Code:
When I attempt fglrxinfo:
Code:
I'm running Kubuntu, Karmic
AMD64
ATI Radion x1350
What could have happened? All I did was plug in a second monitor and restart!

I have had a few X crashes and started to suspect compiz as they usually happened when I was resizing a window or the window was wobbling.
Here is the Xsession-errors log (it's a hidden file in your home folder). It mentions:
Code:

Compiz Fusion set to load on boot; it doesn't. Settings checked as start on boot, it just doesn't and has to be loaded manually from desktop 2.) Desktop Drapes (wallpaper changer) also set to load on boot; also doesn't do so, even though checked to do so, and also must be loaded manually from desktop. 3.) Something is hogging CPU cycles something awful; if I have more than a few tabs in Firefox open, it takes forever to scroll or reload, and the entire system just bogs almost to the point of unusability. This same behavior exists offline when using any graphic capability (Shotwell or even just Nautilus file manager, if viewing graphics as thumbnails.
I realize this is kind of all over the place and all-inclusive, but although my experience USING Ubuntu goes on several years, it's been generally so trouble-free that I've not had to dig around under the hood much, and I'm kind of at a loss as to where to begin troubleshooting this mess. Would it be easier to just back-up and nuke/reinstall the OS?

On login, my skydome (in the Desktop Cube) doesn't load up. Instead, I get a gradient.
I go look in the settings manager and sure enough, I see the skydome image file checked there, and I even changed my gradient colors to be 100% transparent. Makes no difference! All I have to do is change /anything/ in the skydome settings and the skydome image suddenly shows up. Literally changing the gradient color will even make the skydome image show up.

I've read the how-tos (thank you oldcpu!) and wikis about how xorg.conf take precedence over the section configuration files in etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/, if it exist. I also understand that the xorg.conf can be partial. If it is missing some sections, these will be taken from the corresponding xorg.conf.d section config file. Currently I'm using a xorg.conf generated by nvidia-settings in one of my home machines, due to a dual-monitor setup. After generating xorg.conf, the device sections are:
in xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Device0"
Driver "nvidia"
[code]....
My question is if the Option "UseCompositeWrapper" "True" will be used or not. In other words, if a section exist in xorg.conf then it's correspondent in xorg.conf.d/ will be completely ignored *or* only the lines in xorg.conf.d/ that already exist in xorg.conf will be ignored?

I typed the metacity --replace command in Maverick to turn off compiz so I could change compiz files for the "mac minimize" effect. The default Ubuntu installation had compiz working but now it won't work at all. I tried downloading the proprietary driver from "system --> additional drivers" as well, but it said it failed to install.
I have an ATI radeon 3200 HD card. What can I do?

Just upgraded a desktop to openSUSE 11.4 with KDE, and I'm encountering various graphical problems. This machine's been running SUSE versions since 10.0 on similar hardware with few major issues, and I did the 'upgrade' by reinstalling the root partition and keeping the /home partition intact. It has a Radeon 9600 AGP card, which goes under the R300 and RV350AP monikers, and uses the radeon driver (too old for the proprietary ATI driver - deprecated). With the new KMS, it boots up fine under the monitor's correct resolution of 1440x900, though occasionally and randomly then drops to 1024x768 at the login screen. On occasions it will then arrive at the desktop under this lower resolution, other times it corrects itself before getting there.
On starting KDE, the taskbar cycles through various different settings (composited / non-composited) and colours with erroneous shadows. I've tried disabling desktop effects which at least resolves that particular issue. More troublesome is that certain actions result in a garbled display from which it is almost impossible to recover without guessing various keystrokes to cause a logout. Two examples are when running the regular (non-OpenGL) KDE slide show screen saver, when certain transformations corrupt the entire screen, and when opening the Tools -> Options dialog in LibreOffice, though strangely this only causes a problem under one user account and not another.
Running dmesg, I note it is being littered with:
Code:
[drm:radeon_vga_detect] *ERROR* VGA-1: probed a monitor but no|invalid EDID yet I have just the one VGA monitor which is VGA-0, and set as such under KDE. Not sure if that's related or a separate issue.I tried adding 'nomodeset' at boot, but it brings me to a console login and after entering 'startx' I get:
Code:
xauth: file /home/[user]/.serverauth.2891 does not exist
Fatal server error:
Cannot move old log file "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" to "/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old"
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: server error
[code]...
Booting in failsafe mode gets me into KDE but with other weirdness and problems using the desktop. I don't know if KMS is ultimately the culprit or there's some other obvious problem, but this is what I'm left with after a 'fresh' installation (despite the /home partition still being kept from openSUSE 11.3). It's not my PC so I need to leave it in a usable state knowing these corruptions aren't going to occur, and I leave the country next week.

I am trying to use the 'autoconf' command and I keep getting an error message saying I need to have xorg-macros 1.3 or later. I have downloaded both 1.4 and 1.6.0 and tried to install them. Apparently all to no avail, because when I run the autoconf script it comes back as saying I only have 1.2.2 installed. Where do I start looking to figure out what I am screwing up?When I run the configure script in the util-macros-1.6.0 it seems to run right. Then I run make and it says "nothing to do for 'all'". Then I run 'make install' and it seems to run that but apparently it isn't getting installed.
Here is the output of ./configure;make;make install

I am running Crossover Office on a laptop on OpenSuSE 11.2 with a fair bit of success (Outlook is still twitchy related apparently to the http stack). But whenever I do disk I/O to a windows app and I have a second monitor plugged in it flashes to black.
In prior OpenSuSE versions I used to be able to stop this by adding entries to disable the TV output in xorg.conf but now it appears that there is no xorg.conf in use. How do I disable this in the post-sax2 era?

I've been running 11.3 for about 3 days, and have been noticing that it seems to crash with depressing regularity. The symptoms are, from the users perspective, the screen just locks up, mouse cursor won't move, won't respond to any keystrokes, and just dead in the water. But, I can go to another system and ssh back into this one. When I do a top I see at least one and sometimes two Xorg processes owned by root that are grabbing every available CPU cycle. This box has dual cores, so it can support two processes running close to 100% CPU. I tried sending the runaway processes a SIGQUIT signal, which did stop them and did restore normal system operation. But I couldn't find the expected core dump anywhere. If I don't do anything to stop the runaway processes, eventually the whole system locks up, including the ssh session.
I haven't been keeping a real close track, buy my general impression is that this only happens when we have two X sessions running. My wife and I usually keep separate login sessions that we switch back and forth from during the day. I realize this isn't a lot to go on. Any suggestions on what I can do to collect some more info. I particular what do I have to do to get a core dump from the runaway process and what should I do with it if I can get it.

I just upgraded KDE on my openSuSE 11.2 installation. I have never had any problems doing this in the past, but this time, when I rebooted, I noticed that after a few seconds of idle time, my CPU usage goes sky high. I ran top in a console and noticed the culprit was xorg. I am using an NVIDIA card on an AMD64 3200+ with 1 gig of memory. KDE version is currently 4.5.85.
Like I said, I didn't have this problem until the last update. Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

For a few days now every time I start xdvi, Xorg crashes completely. The screen freezes and no input seems to have any effect. So I have to reset the PC. I'm on a 64 bit 11.4, KDE setup, the graphics driver is nouveau.
Here is the part of Xorg.0.log, that seems to be relevant:
Code:
Backtrace:
[ 1772.204] 0: /usr/bin/Xorg (xorg_backtrace+0x28) [0x483068]
[ 1772.204] 1: /usr/bin/Xorg (0x400000+0x5e6d9) [0x45e6d9]
[ 1772.204] 2: /lib64/libc.so.6 (0x7f16585e5000+0x32b30) [0x7f1658617b30]
[Code].....
I tried to reinstall the packages containing libc.so.4 and libexa.so with no improvement.
Are there any other log files, that could give more information?

I recently started using OpenSuSE, coming from a year on Kubuntu as my introduction to Linux operating systems. I had tried out Compiz and liked it, though I used KWin more often than not, and I thought I'd give it a try. However, when I went into YaST to get it, I noticed that it wants to install gnome-desktop and some GNOME programs along with it...I had at one pointed tried Ubuntu Studio alongside my Kubuntu desktop, and I regretted it immediately because ever since I had done that a bunch of things got screwed up in KDE. So I'm a little leery about installing GNOME just to get Compiz working...
Is there a way to use Compiz without the gnome-desktop? Shouldn't it just need GNOME libraries to work? Is installing gnome-desktop along with Compiz going to screw things up and add a bunch of GNOME programs I don't want or need (ex. Nautilus) alongside KDE? If so, I won't bother getting it, so I thought I'd ask, because I don't want to screw things up like I did on Kubuntu.

Recently I decided to install my first linux. I choose openSUSE. Installation went smooothly and everything seemed to work just fine. After few days i noticed that sometimes my screen blinks for some time. During this blinking everything is working very slow.Today when blinking started i decided to see CPU usage of specific processes and I noticed that during this strange behaviour Xorg CPU usage is about 40% or more, it seems odd to me because usually it is few %. I am wondering what is the cause of this behaviour and how can I do something about it.I am using KDE, my graphics card is Intel GMA 4500.

I just got a set of updates from Xorg11 (Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.1/i586) repository and now, my X doesn't come up. During update, zypper complained about xorg-x11-libxcb and it didn't get updated. On further investigation I noticed that libxcb-xlib.so.0.0.0 is missing in the new package (version 7.4-4.2.
