OpenSUSE :: Blinking Of The Screen And Xorg CPU Usage?

Aug 3, 2011

Recently I decided to install my first linux. I choose openSUSE. Installation went smooothly and everything seemed to work just fine. After few days i noticed that sometimes my screen blinks for some time. During this blinking everything is working very slow.Today when blinking started i decided to see CPU usage of specific processes and I noticed that during this strange behaviour Xorg CPU usage is about 40% or more, it seems odd to me because usually it is few %. I am wondering what is the cause of this behaviour and how can I do something about it.I am using KDE, my graphics card is Intel GMA 4500.

OpenSUSE :: High CPU Usage With XORG / Cause Of This?

Dec 14, 2010

I just upgraded KDE on my openSuSE 11.2 installation. I have never had any problems doing this in the past, but this time, when I rebooted, I noticed that after a few seconds of idle time, my CPU usage goes sky high. I ran top in a console and noticed the culprit was xorg. I am using an NVIDIA card on an AMD64 3200+ with 1 gig of memory. KDE version is currently 4.5.85.
Like I said, I didn't have this problem until the last update. Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

OpenSUSE :: Regular Xorg And Plasma-desktop CPU Usage Spikes

Nov 1, 2010

I have this problem that Xorg CPU usage spikes to between %20-%40, a little more than once every second - constantly. When this happens, everything on the system slows down, video, scrolling through pages, etc. plasma-desktop does the same, at the same time as Xorg, though uses less CPU. Switching off Desktop effects makes no difference. The spikes starts just after KDE is up and running after boot. I'm running 11.3, KDE 4.4.4 release 3, 64bit on a desktop and 32bit on a laptop, both have the same problem. I have searched the internet, but cannot find anything related to this, please help!

My 64bit desktop details is:

AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5400+, 1000 MHz

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.4 Screen Blinking ATI Radeon X1650 Series?

Sep 5, 2011

Similar to the other threads, but a completely different card/manufacturer. The others were mostly Nvidia. I have a dial boot machine, HP PAvillion with Windows 7 and now openSUSE, 11.4.

One (of my many problems right now!) is the screen / monitor constantly blinks/flashes/blanks. About every 15-20 seconds, it will go black for about 1-2 seconds and then come right back.

I was using KDE the first go around, and have since re-installed and am now running Gnome. I switched to Mint in between and did not have this problem. Also, I do not appear to have this happen at the logon screen. I have also tried ubuntu and didn't have the problem. I have checked the screen saver settings, and power save options and have them set to off and a couple of hours respectively. I have also modified the xorg.conf.d file to hard code the monitor settings. (Dell 23"). The card is Dual DVI out, and I have it converting to VGA to the monitor.

OpenSUSE Install :: 'x11failsafe' Parameter - GUI Wouldn't Show Up - Ctrl+alt+f2 Yeilded A Black Screen With A Blinking Underscore

Oct 30, 2009

I ran into a problem the moment i installed 11.1. The GUI wouldn't show up (ctrl+alt+f2 yeilded a black screen with a blinking underscore). Failsafe worked fine, though.

So, i tried entering, one by one, every parameter that was entered in the failsafe boot options. Entering 'x11failsafe' gave me a flawless GUI. So, i opened the '/boot/grub/menu.lst' file and added this parameter in the 'showopts' of the normal mode, to make it permanent. Fine. Now, what exactly have i done?

Note- I use an NVidia 8000 series Graphic card. I'll post more details if you need them.

Ubuntu :: Xorg CPU Usage Goes To 99%+ After Idling With Xbmc?

May 27, 2010

I use my second machine mainly as an xbmc box, but for the past few months it has come across a problem where if I idle for a certain period while running xbmc, eventually my Xorg process will basically hang, using 99% or more of my CPU. I can rescue my machine via ssh if I stop the gdm service and then kill the Xorg process, but re-starting gdm will cause Xorg to immediately use 99% again, even if xbmc is no longer running.

This will invariably occur if xbmc is running, and never occurs if not. I believe sometimes it also will happen if I am actually using xbmc, but usually it happens when idling. I have tried changing the screen saver to a blank screen, thinking that maybe the screen saver was causing some kind of graphics driver problem, to no avail.

I understand if this should be posted at the xbmc problems but the fact that the problem persists after shutting down xbmc and restarting gdm/Xorg suggests to me that something is going awry outside of xbmc. The logs for both xbmc and Xorg do not reveal anything that would suggest why things would all of a sudden break.

I am running xbmc on a retired mythbuntu installation, x86_64, which has had most of the myth stuff removed. I already disabled/uninstalled pulseaudio and compiz. This phenomenon occured all way way back with Gutsy Gibbon and I have since tried every upgrade in between, now on Lucid Lynx. I have also tried with both stable and daily SVN builds of xbmc.

Any ideas on where I might start debugging this problem? What is confusing to me is that xbmc seems to be stable, and so does Xorg. If I had to guess it would be a driver issue, though I have also tried multiple versions of the Nvidia driver as well (currently using 195.36.07.03).

Ubuntu :: Xorg Periodically Spikes In CPU Usage?

Jun 23, 2010

I just upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 LTS, and my system seems to have developed a weird problem. Every few minutes, especially when I'm using chrome, VLC, or the screensaver is running, Xorg will start to spike in its CPU usage - spikes occur several times per second, and generally go up to 50-100%. Spikes seem to be composed of half "System" and half "User" according to my System Monitor applet thing.

Weirder than the problem is the thing which seems to stop this behavior - going to a terminal which is running top and hitting enter a few times seems to invariably return the CPU usage to usual (within seconds). There does seem to be a ~10 second period where the system monitor shows a few % "System" activity. Xorg starts up again with the same spikes within minutes, however.

EDIT: It looks like almost any keyboard input to any terminal also stops the Xorg CPU use - things which change the state of the other terminal, e.g. hitting the spacebar, typing a letter, will work, while hitting CTRL or SHIFT does not suffice to return the CPU use to normal.

I'm using an NVIDIA proprietary driver (which system->administration->hardware drivers says is (version current) and Recommended). My graphics card is a GeForce 9400 GT. I'm using Kernel 2.6.32-22-generic, and x86_64 Ubuntu. Here's my xorg.conf file:

Code:
# nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings
# nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (buildd@crested) Sun Feb 1 20:25:37 UTC 2009

Fedora :: Xorg's CPU Usage Spikes When Using Scroll Wheel / Sort It?

Jan 29, 2010

When I "middle click" the scroll wheel to enable smooth scrolling in Firefox, the entire machine basically locks up until it scrolls to the bottom of the page. On a long web page, this can take almost a full minute as it scrolls very slowly.

Also, just using the scroll wheel to scroll normally. If I scroll up then back down quickly, it takes quite some time, and the CPU usage spikes under those conditions too.

As a test, I went ahead and loaded Top in a terminal window, set side-by-side with my browser. Once I start the smooth scrolling, I can't stop it. It has to get to the bottom of the web page to quit. Xorg's CPU usage spikes during that time and I can hear the fans starting to speed up.

I just quickly made a long text document in Gedit and tried scrolling through it. Same thing. So it's not limited to any one application.

Anyone experiencing anything like this? It started happening after my last major update.

I'm using Fedora 12 with Gnome.

Ubuntu :: AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Consistently At 99% Usage Whenever Any Application Besides Xorg Is Open And Running

Jun 12, 2011

I have a desktop PC that I built back when I was a teenager, running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and nothing else. I love it, but for one thing: the dang CPU usage hits at least 99% whenever any application besides Xorg is open and running. This doesn't affect performance too much, but if Windows XP Home Edition never gets close to 100% usage, then I figure there's something going on.

Software :: Xorg-server-1.7.1 Shows Only Blank Screen After Update From Xorg-server-1.6.3?

Jan 5, 2010

my laptop is running Slackware64 13.0. Today I tried to update to X.org 7.5 (version 1.7.1) from version 1.6.3 shipped with Slackware. I downloaded the relevant source tarballs from www.x.org and compiled them with no errors. The compiled packages are:

xorg-server-1.7.1
xf86-input-synaptics-1.2.0
xextproto-7.1.1
xcmiscproto-1.2.0

[code]....

My laptop has an NVIDIA graphics card and I'm using the proprietary driver from NVIDIA. Thus I reinstalled the driver after the update and tried to launch X.org with "startx". After a short while the NVIDIA logo appears for some hundred milliseconds and disappears then. But now the screen is blank and it is not possible to switch to another VT via Ctrl+Alt+Fx. But it is possible to login from another computer and restart everything, so that I conclude that the system does not hang.

It is even possible to do work normally with the laptop from remote. If I try to kill the X-server, it ignores SIGTERM and has to be terminated by SIGKILL. But the laptop's screen stays black and empty and does not allow to switch to another VT (chvt terminates with "interrupted system call."). dmesg does not give any errors.

Fedora :: Blank Screen With Blinking Cursor?

Feb 22, 2010

Whenever I boot the system after the fedora 12 bubble fills up I see a blank screen with a blinking cursor. Though I am able to access tty2 by pressing alt+ctrl+F2.

I have seen the boot logs and it shows a warning:

Code:
Warning: Deprecated config file /etc/modprobe.conf, all config files belong into /etc/modprobe.d/

I have an ATI Radeon 3xxx series card and I have recently installed mesa-dri-drivers.x86_64. I guess the blank screen problem is because xorg for fedora 12 doesn't support these drivers.

I want to remove this package using yum, but when I try to do it using "yum remove" it shows 95 packages that would be uninstalled with it. I don't want to remove those packages as it has some that I use like Konversation.

how do I remove mesa-dri-drivers and what were the drivers that were being used before I installed mesa.

Debian :: Booting From Another Drive - Blinking Cursor At The Top Of The Screen

May 17, 2011

I have a machine with Squeeze that currently boots from an USB thumb drive (that was the only drive on that box, referenced as SDA in /dev... Yep, no optical drive or HDD). I have installed an SSD on that machine. It is referenced a SDA, and the thumb drive has been nudged to SDB. I'd like to boot from the SSD and ditch the thumb.

I've partitioned and formatted the new Disk (ext4), created a swap file (to keep things simple, no swap partition), and used rsync -Sax / /media/USB0/ to clone the content of the root FS. I've edited the fstab file of the SSD to match the config (uuid of the drive, ext4 FS, swap file) then use grub-mkconfig -o /media/USB0/boot/grub/grub.cfg (I apt-get installed grub 2)

I've set the SSD as first boot device in the BIOS. Now when I boot from the SSD, all I get is a blinking cursor at the top of the screen (the thumb drive still boots fine). I guess I missed something .

I've been struggling with this for about 2 hours now (not the grub issue, the whole mess). I've tried googling this last problem, then searched this forum with no luck (I usually find stuff about people who want to boot from a drive other than the first one and must daisy-chain grub).

Bootloaders (and low level linux stuff) are new to me. I'm afraid to botch the bootloader of the thumb drive (grub 1.9x), and to be locked out of the machine.

Ubuntu :: Get A Black Screen With A Blinking Cursor After Start Up

May 5, 2010

A few weeks ago I installed Ubuntu 10.4 beta on a pc. I upgraded it to 10.4 RC and 10.4 final release. I think it was after upgrading to 10.4RC that I started having a problem during startup. Here is what happens:
I turn the pc on the bootstrap process occurres, then the grub screen comes up I let ubuntu boot. For a few seconds I get a black screen with a blinking cursor. The Ubuntu splash screen flashes on the screen for maybe a second or two. Then I'm dumped to the command prompt on TTY1.

At this point I can log in with a username and password type startx and I'm at the ubuntu desktop. If I log off I'm back at the command prompt on TTY1. If I press alt-ctrl-F7 at the command prompt this is what I see, these are the last four lines of text: init: ureadahead-other main process (742) terminated with status 4

Ubuntu :: Cannot Boot - Black Screen With Blinking Server

Jun 4, 2011

I built my computer and having trouble booting Ubuntu, here are my system specifications.
System Specifications:
CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 3.0GHz Quad-Core
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 5750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5
Motherboard: ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3
Memory: 4G G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR3 1600
PSU: Cooler Master GX Series 750w
HDD: 500GB Samsung 7200 RPM

I have Ubuntu on a DVD and have tried both my DVD drives, AND an external DVD drive and have no luck. I have tried different versions of Ubuntu and get the same problem. So I boot it fine and it gets the the Ubuntu splash screen and I select "Install Ubuntu" it loads for a few seconds then goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. It sits here forever. I tested on my friends computer with very similar processor and it blinks for about 3 seconds then an Ubuntu splash screen appears with dots under it and it loads and works fine.

So I am 100% positive the DVD is fine and should work for my processor also. I do have Windows 7 currently installed. And I made a 100 GB partition via Windows 7 using Easeus Partition Manager. If it matters, I did test Ubuntu on my computer by installing it from VirtualBox and it worked fine...but I'd rather do a dualboot because I don't like running an OS in another OS and its performance isn't so great when emulating an Operating System...

After the install it either freezes/hangs when the post install begins or IF the post install works (when I use ide=nodma) it won't boot. I do get to see the grub screen (if I change the timeout in grub.conf) but as soon as the kernel starts loading it freezes. and I see a black screen with a prett fast blinking cursor.

With the live cd, if I try to boot: it reports, no root available going to sleep.
