OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Unable To Use External DVD-RW Drive

Apr 14, 2010

I'm running openSUSE 11.1 32-bit and I'm trying to use my external USB DVD-RW drive. I've tried loading two 11.1 discs in the drive and both of them fail. After putting the dvd in the drive I mount with::mount/dev /scd0 /media/cdrom

and it comes back with:mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error. In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so.Second question is can I use this external USB DVD-RW drive to install linux from, or does it have to be an internal drive? If so is there anything special I need to do to get it to look at the drive during boot. I take it this is dependant on a BIOS setting. This is all assuming of course I can get my dvd's to read.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Unable To Play Files On NAS Drive From Within Smplayer Over Samba Shares Or Ftp?

May 21, 2011

I have mentioned this in another thread elsewhere but perhaps this is a better location. In Opensuse 11.3 I was able to play files on my NAS drive from within smplayer over samba shares or ftp. I would simply use dolphin to browse to the file on the nas drive (either through samba or ftp protocol), double click the .avi file and it would load smplayer and begin playing immediately.

In 11.4 I have samba set up using the same smb.conf file However, if I double click the .avi file it copies the entire contents to the local computer before launching smplayer. If I use smplayer's file selector and navigate to the file on the samba share I get the message "you can only select local files" This is a different behaviour to that from 11.3 However, using the ftp protocol from within dolphin smplayer launches immediately and begins playing. smplayer is launched using the shortcut command

Code:
smplayer %U
Does anybody have any suggestions on a workaround or how to correct? Using kaffeine I have no problems. Double click the file on the nas drive and kaffeine launches immediately and begins playing.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Mount External Drive?

Jul 29, 2011

Having issues while mounting my 1TB passport USB drive. When running this command....

Code:
sudo mount /dev/sdc /mnt/WD/

I got this error: mount: you must specify the filesystem type I even tried adding the filesystem, which was or is ext4

Code:
sudo mount -t ext4 /dev/sdc /mnt/WD/
Getting a different error instead:
Code:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

I should mention that this was working just a few hours ago. There was a power glitch and my Ubuntu headless server lost power. I turned it on and since then, I am getting this error. I would prefer not to format via GUI .... 1st because I have data there , 2nd, because I don't want to rely on a graphical interface but being able to fix this via terminal.

Fedora :: Unable To Access A Usb External Hard Drive

May 27, 2011

Running fedora14 on a dell latitude-d600 laptop and I'm trying to access a 500gb sata external hard drive that is connected via usb. The laptop can see the drive as '500 GB Hard Disk: 524 MB Filesystem' and it's clearly mounted under the '/media' directory. However, when I attempt to read the files on it, I am only able to see the 524mb section of the drive. The external hard drive is an ext3 file system (running fedora13) and I believe it's encrypted.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Mount Ext4 External Hard Drive

Jul 5, 2010

I wanted to make a clone of my drive, so I tried the ole sudo dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/sdg1 trick, but first I formatted the drive to the Ext4 format. I wish I would have understood that format a little more before I decided to format it that way. Now I can't access my drive at all. I read almost everything on the net about manually mounting it, but almost everything was in Fat, NTFS, or Ext3/2 format. I even read the Ubuntu documentation. I don't know if it's because my drive is in Ext4 format, or if I'm just not doing something right.

As you can see in the following picture, it recognizes the drive, yet I am unable to mount it. I am trying to access the 160 GB drive. I even tried to see if Windows would recognize it. No go. Today while lurking in the Ubuntu Forums I found a way to make a live .iso of my system (which I think is awesome). So now I want to reformat my drive and use it as storage once again. I think I will restore it to NTFS. I thought that the Ext4 format would work better in Linux (which I was wrong), but now I need Windows to recognize it as well, and it needs to be able to store files bigger than 4 GB (unless you have a suggestion on what to format it as).

General :: Unable To Own Previously Saved /home Files On New External USB Drive

Nov 2, 2010

I have just had to reinstall my OS (Sabayon) onto a new and larger hard drive (dying old disk). I quickly saved all my old docs in /home on an external USB drive (formatted and then created an ext4 file system) before the swap and installation.

After getting the new disk running I connected the USB external disk. First I could not access the drive at all, but that seems to be fixed. Now I want to bring all my files back to my new /home folder but apparently they (especially the former MS Office .doc, .xls, etc files, not so much the OpenOffice files) are read only and I don't have permissions anymore. I am able to create directories on the external, and can move files back and forth, but don't seem to own many of them.Sabayon automatically mounted my external disk in /media/disk, rather than /mnt, so I've left that alone for now. After searching here and elsewhere for info, I tried a few things (below): For access I added a line to /etc/fstab:

Code:

/dev/sdb1 /media/disk ext4 noauto,rw 0 0

Here's what I've done to try and fix ownership already:

in /media I:

Code:

# chmod 775 disk

which gives output of:

Code:

media # ls -l
total 4
drwxrwxr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 1 21:30 disk

[code]....

I'm not sure what the total 4 refers to since there is only the one directory disk inside /media but I assume that's not part of this issue... Does adding umask=0 have anything to do with this, and if so where does that go?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Unable To Use External USB Sound Card

Apr 17, 2010

I have an external USB Sound Card (Audiophile Fubar II DAC) that worked flawlessy up to one or two months ago when suddenly it stopped to make any sound. The card, speakers, etc. are working, I tried it from another OS running on the very same PC. The card is detected, but it's dumb

$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog]

[code]....

The card appears under System->Preferences->Sound->Hardware but there are two unusual things (if I remember correctly). 1. The green sound card icon on the left is not shown, it's not gray, there is nothing (but the USB Headset, that works well, doesn't have the icon either so maybe it'ok).

2. From the Profiles dropdown I can only choose from four options (off, analog mono, analog stereo and digital duplex). Before there were more (digital output only, etc.).I checked the levels several times. Another external USB card (SB Xi-Fi 5.1) works well.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Installing LinDVD For Toshiba External SuperMulti Drive?

Dec 26, 2010

X-Posted at Hardware & Laptops

I'm having the same problem this guy had. He got an error message when trying to install LinDVD, but since he realized he didn't actually need the software in the first place, the thread is still unsolved.

My computer has no CD/DVD drive. I just got a Toshiba External SuperMulti Drive that I want to use for reading CDs and DVDs. The drive included a CD with LinDVD on it, which I can put into the drive and use to install LinDVD. However, the Package Installer gives me the same status message as CKMBDavis had: Error: Wrong architecture 'lpia'.

I tried just hooking up the drive to my computer and inserting a DVD. It prompted me to open Movie Player, which I did, but when it tried to actually play the DVD, a pop up box came up that said, "An error occurred. Could not read from resource." VLC will not play the DVD either.

Here is my output for print architecture in response to adam814's first comment on CKMBDavis's thread:

Code:
$ dpkg --print-architecture
i386
I also tried adam814's suggestion in his second comment:
Code:
$ dpkg --force-architecture -i <lindvd.deb>
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'

How do I get my DVD player to work?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Automount Fails With External USB Drive

OpenSUSE Hardware :: USB External Drive Works On Desktop?

Sep 14, 2011

So I've got a weird issue with my usb external drive. It's a generic enclosure in to which I've mounted a toshiba IDE drive. It appears as "Generic USB to IDE bridge".Said drive works fine on every machine I try to use it on, but NOT my laptop. Oh, it will appear in LSUSB, and in dmesg, (sometimes it appears, but the partitions do not, e.g. I see sdc, but not sdc1 and sdc2).

However, on any attempt to access it (it mounts fine too), Dolphin hangs (and so does most of KDE). I assume a disk sleep is the problem. Unplugging the drive resolves the hang. ages later, the drive will copy bits of data in small spurts, until it hangs for some more time. After a while, I see an ACHI/USB reset message in the system logs, and the drive resumes copying for some more time.

The drive is bus powered, but it doesn't matter if I use one/both USB connectors, and like I said, it works fine on my desktop, which also has SuSE 11.4 on it. Any ideas what's going on? Sorry if I left out some info, I wanted to get this out and let you folks stew over it while I'm running some errands.

OpenSUSE Install :: Using An External Drive As A Root Device?

Jan 6, 2010

I have a large external drive, which I connect to my laptop via a PCMCIA card - the machine is old and does not have USB 2.0 built in, so I use the PCMCIA card for that.

I am thinking of the following setup, and hope you can give me some tips on whether or not that would be a sound solution:

- designate a boot partition on the laptop's internal hard drive, which could store kernels

- make up a linux partition (or more than one) to use as root for any distribution on the external drive

- keep /home as separate partition on the external drive

My goal in mind is to be able to boot more than one Linux partition from the external drive. I can't make it through USB boot because the PCMCIA card is not recognized before a kernel module is loaded, and I can't use the internal USB 1.1 port for the external drive.

Do you think this is the way to go? Currently, I only have my /home partition mounted off the external drive.

OpenSUSE Install :: Formatting A External Hard Drive?

Jun 12, 2011

What I've done is partition my external hard drive to have 130g for my Windows info. Then putting the 90g towards Linux. I used a live cd on my home computer to format the 90g of Linux. I'm simply wanting something to learn more about from time to time that I can use on my home computer, laptop, fiance's computer, etc. So the formatting went successful. I have linux on the 90g of hard drive that I wanted it on. The problem is this. When I take the live cd out, when I remove my external hard drive from my computer. The home computer (which has Windows) won't boot. It comes up with a error 21. But now when I boot with the external hard drive I use, I make it to the boot menu and can boot from Windows.I need to be able to boot from Windows on this home computer, since my mother and grandparents use this computer quite a bit. I'm not always going to have my ext. hard drive plugged into this computer, so I need some help if you all know now.
