OpenSUSE Hardware :: Suspend On Desktop Results On Back Screen?

Jan 6, 2010

I use frequently on my laptop the "suspend" function of opensuse 11.2.

I would like to use the "suspend" function on my desktop too running an opensuse 11.1 with default kernel 2.6.27.39, but when I restart the machine the monitor is black and the only solution is to reboot it.

Is it possible to use the "suspend" on desktop? Where is it possible to get the information to make it possible?

Ubuntu :: Got Black Screen After Suspend/switch Back From TV

Jul 8, 2011

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 64bit. Mainboard Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2V. My LCD is a HDTV monitor which is plugged to onboard graphic card.

I don't know what happen with my Ubuntu. It sometimes goes black when I try to wake my PC when it's suspended previously. The screen is black, but I still can move mouse cursor. I also can do blindly click on stuff on screen (I could play a song last time by clicking randomly). This problem also happens sometimes when I switch back to PC from TV (My LCD is a HDTV monitor).

The only action I can do when it happened is reset my PC.

OpenSUSE Install :: Suspend On A Desktop In 11.4?

Mar 8, 2011

Suspend "appears" to be working for me but not quite:1) the screen says "done" (3 lines of text) appear2) the screen never shuts down, nor does the "done" messages disappear3) it returns from suspend by both keyboard activity and the power button4) the pc doesn't go silent, some fans or something still making sound 5) the pc power light blinks indicating suspensionActually the pc doesn't really suspend as not only do fans run but the optical drives open and appear to read (based on blinking lights)In 11.3 suspending seemed to actually suspend and hitting the power seemed to bring it out of sleep but the monitor never came back on (indicator light displayed off color) so the suspend functionality was useless

OpenSUSE Install :: Screen Black After Pm Suspend?

Dec 24, 2009

I'm running openSUSE 11.2 on a Thinkpad T61p with nvidia graphics. I'm running the proprietary nvidia driver. The battery ran very low and the computer suspended itself. After I woke it up, the desktop is completely black. After troubleshooting as much as I could, I did ctrl-alt-backspace, which brought me to a normal (non-black) login screen. However, as soon as I logged in, I was back to a completely black screen. But the system is operating.I rebooted the computer (warm reboot as well as cold restart) and each time the video is normal until I get to the desktop and all I get it black.Everything was normal until the pm suspend.Suspend has never worked exactly right, so I don't normally use it. But in this case, it used itself Next step: I logged in to console mode and looked at the logs. The only messages of interest seem to be in Xorg.0.log I found a couple error messages that might be of interest:

(II) LoadModule: "nouveau"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module nouveau
(II) UnloadModule: "nouveau"

OpenSUSE :: Change Gnome Desktop Icons Back To Previous Settings?

Jan 15, 2011

I have recently played around with Mac4lin a program to change the interface to one that resembles a Mac computer. I did not like the settings then decided to uninstall the program. It reverted to a really ugly looking gnome desktop rather than my previous settings. One thing that I don't like is that I have a foot icon on my gnome traditional menu button on the panel rather than the green ball type icon I used to have. I know it's not the end of the world that my icons do not look like it previously did, everything else is running smoothly, though I'm just more annoyed than anything else.

I have managed to delete my panel at the bottom of my screen and I'm totally stumped as to how to get it back.I'm pretty new to linux, having dabbled with it in the past.. finding it much better than said mainstream OS *Ahem* .The reason I deleted it by accident was I right clicked on it and deleted panel thinking I'd just added another panel to it. D'oh. My firefox isn't touching the top of the screen either, I think I created a panel up there but I can't see it or anything

OpenSUSE Install :: Login Screen Keeps Bouncing Back To Login Screen

Sep 17, 2010

I have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

/etc/fstab:
/dev/dis/by-id/ata-ST9250410ASG_5VG0B5VS-part5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/dis/by-id/ata-ST9250410ASG_5VG0B5VS-part6 / ext4 acl,user_xattr 1 1

[code]....

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:

/dev/sda6 Use% is 100%
devtmpfs Use% is 1%
tmpfs Use% is 1%
/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%

So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?

Fedora :: NVidia Driver Results In Nowhere ( Black Screen )?

Sep 23, 2009

NVidia FX5200: nvidia-glx-173xxx The problem is that, when I install it, upon rebooting, I get a black screen with one blinking underscore at the top left corner. I somehow managed to get into the console and .. there's something wrong with the video card driver ( no way I could catch it into a picture ).

This was the exact reason why my Fedora CD was laying on the corner for months - I remember having this issue earlier as well.

Is there a way to fix it or at least, recover from a broken video card driver ?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Always Results In Black Screen Any Variant?

Jun 8, 2010

I have a fairly old laptop that has been running 8.04. I got the 10.04 alternative CD and updated the system. After the reboot the screen just stays blank. I have left it running for some time to see if anything happens. I have tried to CTRL+ALT+F1 to get a console. But nothing.

So I looked up some solutions on the internet and decided to try xubuntu too see if this may be related to the low (old) specs of the laptop. Got the xubuntu CD. But even booting from the xubuntu CD (try before you install) results in a blank screen. 9.10 boots fine from the CD, but I have not tried to install it yet.

Ubuntu :: New Video Card Results In Black Screen?

Aug 20, 2011

My EVGA 7600GT video card suddenly died. A friend gave me an EVGA GeForce 8400GS to replace. I'm running a homemade AMD Athlon 64 3700 box with 2 GB memory and 2- 250 GB WD hard drives. First drive has Win XP OS and second drive runs Ubuntu 10.04. I was using Ubuntu about 99% of the time before the video failed. After installing new vid card, I deleted old driver in Win and installed new driver off the CD that came with the card. Windows system was then 100% back to normal.

My grub booter is set up to default boot to Ubuntu with Windows the last choice which can be done manually. After installing new Win video driver and confirming it worked, I re-booted the computer and let it go to Ubuntu. The results was the usually flashing cursor for about 10 seconds, but instead of the Ubuntu splash screen popping up, the monitor went black for about a minute and then shut off the same as if I had shut down the computer.

That was over a week ago, Since then I have tried everything I can think of but nothing changes. I have read and tried numerous ideas from other posts on these forums (such as hitting ctrl, alt, +/- to change screen resolution) but I still have a black screen.

I tried booting up from my original install CD which is ver 9.10, not 10.04 (I upgraded to 10.04 by directly downloading online and never made a 10.04 CD). I can get into an Ubuntu desktop with that old CD and I checked to see that it showed the highest resolution for my monitor (a 22" wide flatscreen whose native resolution is high-1920x1280?? don't exactly remember at the moment). I also tried loading the generic Nvidia 185 driver but it didn't seem to take. I downloaded the latest Nvidia driver for Linux onto a thumb drive and tried to install it here, but was refused because the message said it had to go into "root" and I didn't have permission. I don't know how to establish permission when booting from an old install CD. I'm sure I have administration rights under my regular 10.04 installation but can't see it due to the blank screen.

I've tried at boot to go to the recovery mode listed right below the default Ubuntu boot option, but when I do, a whole series of text flashes on the screen and rolls down to the word "done" with a flashing cursor at the very end, The cursor flashes for about 5 seconds and then the screen goes black. I've tried to enter some quick text at the cursor to keep it from going black, but it doesn't stop it. It wants to go black and it does so.

Ubuntu :: Changing GPU Clock Speeds Results In Black Screen?

Sep 13, 2010

I've recently done a clean install from Karmic to Lucid, everything went well first time, although I noticed that my GPU performance seemed to drop. It wasn't amazing to begin with being an older AGP card (nvidia 6800GT), but it was enough of a drop to make me look for a solution.

I thought maybe the drivers in Lucid were to blame so I recently added the ubuntu-x-swat PPA

[URL]

to get the most up to date drivers.

Performance didn't go up, so I tried the 173 version of the drivers to see if that would help, but I had no luck.

Today I'm pretty sure I downloaded an update from the above PPA and since then every time I change the clock speeds (via the Coolbits option within nvidia-settings) on my card I get a black screen, there is no response from any input device and I have to hold the power button to turn off the PC.

I want to know if there is anyway to check recent packages I've downloaded, and also if anyone could shed some light as to why changing the clock speeds of the card would result in a black screen and no response from the keyboard or mouse.

I'd also like to point out, that I've been changing the clock speeds of the card since I first installed Karmic with no problem. Additionally before I downloaded today's updates, even with the new packages from the above PPA changing the clock speeds worked perfectly. It seems that something I downloaded is to blame.

Ubuntu :: Desktop Keeps Trying To Suspend - How To Disable?

Jul 11, 2011

I'm managing a desktop that is several states away. The person I'm working with has no internet and the computer IQ of a twig. We're running Ubuntu 10.04 It's a Dell 230 Slim tower. Ubuntu keeps trying to suspend the machine randomly for no reason. I had him disable suspend in the BIOS because the computer was just suspending sporadically. Now he gets a popup that says "Failed to Suspend, the computer failed to suspend. The failure was reported as cannot suspend"

He is running a custom Ubuntu distro I made. I have this same distro running on dozens of other computers with no issues. I can't figure out why this is happening. Is there anyway I can completely disable anything that would make the computer suspend from the CLI? Or where are the logs that I can look at to see what may be causing this? I can SSH into his machine but nothing more.
