OpenSUSE Hardware :: Some Scripting To Upgrade ATI Catalyst From 10.6 (repo) To 10.8 (run)
Aug 31, 2010
I have to do it on several machines, so I wrote a script. You don't have to reboot but you must exit X. Use it at your own risk
Code:
#! /bin/bash
# --------------------------------------------------------------
# What it does :
# - unload fglrx if needed
# - make a copy of /etc/X11/xorg.conf (if any)
[code]....

when RPMfusion will have the ATI catalyst driver for Fdedora 14 in its repo? If it is going to take a log time then I might just install it from ATI's site, but I'd rather not go through all the trouble if I don't have to.

I have 2 machines running 11.1, but using 2 diff KDE repo sets . . .
On the first, I am using /KDE:/43:/openSUSE_11.1 as listed under the KDE 4.3.x section of the KDE repo's page. The installed KDE version is 4.3.3-3 but yesterday this repo was updated to 4.3.4-1. The corresponding repo for 11.2 now also has 4.3.4-1.
On the second, I am using /KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.1. Installed is 4.3.3-128, the most current. This is the same version as in the corresponding 11.2 repo.
IIRC (and I very well may not) for those of us who wanted to go to 4.2 (and later, 4.3) it was first advised to use the /KDE:/KDE4:/Factory set, but later it was advised to switch to the /KDE:/43:/ set.
In any event, since 4.3.3 is officially released by KDE and considered stable while 4.3.4 is not, it would appear the upgrade path should use /KDE:/KDE4:/Factory/11.2 (which is counter-intuitive to me, given the "factory" nomenclature; on the other hand, the "43:" section is not accurately described, so perhaps that's the problem).

Imagine my surprise when, after accepting the proposed upgrades posted for OS 11.1 today, that my SeaMonkey email client shows NO messages from Sept. 2010 in any account, sent or received.
More info: Upon checking for messages, an unusually large number were seem to download (POP server) but few appeared in the in boxes. Old messages from August appeared for the first time.

If I disable the repo-non-oss repository the update works fine. The URL I have for the repo-non-oss repository is:

This has been going on for over a week. Do I need to use a different URL for the non-oss repository? I live in New York, United States.

Maybe saying Ubuntu is getting worse is unfair. I'm not a big user I have to say. I use it more out of curiosity than anything else. I first used 8 and it was brilliant. I told all my mates about it. Everything work great. I had all desktop effects. I could use a KDE session. Then I upgraded to 9 and lost KDE ability but still had all desktop effects available. Upgraded to 10 a few weeks ago and now no desktop effects. Non of the above is a problem but I feel like, for me, it's going backwards.
I use an old AMD 2600 machine with a Radeon 9600. I used to be able to use ATI Catalyst but that didn't work after the upgrade to 10 and I can't seem to find a solution. Ubuntu is still brilliant but I don't like things being taken away from me.

I wasn't paying proper attention when adding a repo to yast and need to find the file were the info is saved to delete this. The problem is that whenever i use yast it comes up with an error code saying that it can't find the data for the 'problem' repo. Have tried zypper rm but that comes up with a similar error advising that the data is in a format that was not expected. My thinking is to track the file were the yast repo source details are saved, delete this and then just add the repos that i use back.

So xorg was acting up, and I went into the Hardware Drivers menu to see if the driver had a problem. The driver was disabled, and could not be activated. I downloaded the new ATI driver. I uninstalled the old one, installed the new one, and ran the config step just like it specifies in the install instructions. Upon reboot, I got a blank screen instead of the login screen.I managed to drop back to the command line and uninstall the driver, so now I'm stuck in ubuntu with one monitor instead of 2.
I'm going to attempt to revert to the old ATI driver (which I still have in my home dir), but I wanted to be sure to get this into the forums before I ruined my GUI again.

I upgraded to F15 from F14 via a yum upgrade using an F15 repo. Things seems to be working mostly OK except for some shared drives on Windows Server 2003. In my /etc/fstab file I have this:
Code:
# /etc/fstab
# Created by anaconda on Fri Oct 8 18:32:22 2010
#
# Accessible filesystems, by reference, are maintained under '/dev/disk'
# See man pages fstab(5), findfs(8), mount(8) and/or blkid(8) for more info

I want to have most my system in Debian Stable and a few packages updated to a version that is not in Stable repos. For example Abiword. With the one in Debian Stable I have many issues.I could add Debian testing repos and update it, but then I will have to upgrade to testing a lot of programs that I didn't intended to upgrade.ex: Abiword in testing may requiere libc6(testing) and with that I would have to upgrade a lot of programs that will not work with a newer version of libc6.

I've never got if, after enabling the 3d acceleration in virtualbox and installing the guest additions in safe mode, you still need to install the original drivers (catalyst in my case). Do know that by chance?

I run OpenSuse 11.2. I installed Catalyst 10.2 on a new installation only to lose my cursor on boot up (and the 'task bar' was not extended to the length of the screen) I re-installed the o/s and installed Catalyst 10.3 but with the same result. I've spent hours trying to figure out the problem but to no avail. My system is as follows:
Radeon HD 5870
M/B Asus P6X58D Premium
6 Gb RAM (1066)
i7 2.8gb

I can't remove my old 10.6 catalyst drivers. First I have removed both fglrx packages installed from ATI repo. Then I removed the xorg file, run mkinitrd and finally a reboot to start again with radeon drivers. (fglrx module is not running anymore). After that I run the 10.8 installation script, aticonfig --initial, mkinitrd and finally the reboot. Now the fglrx module is running but when I open de catalyst control center the information tab shows catalyst 10.6 drivers version (8.741 package version). Radeon HD2400 + openSUSE 11.3. Is there something else I should remove before installing catalyst drivers again?

I haven't paid attention to this before (there are too many monitors around here). But I just noticed a display problem with fglrx on HD 2400 XT (iMac) : parts of pages get covered with gray or black while scrolling up and down in Firefox.
I did reboot that machine a couple times and switch the driver to reproduce the problem. It never occures with either radeon or radeonhd.

I tried to install the ATI proprietary driver for an HD 5800 (Catalyst for Linux 64 bit, v. 10.8). The two main instruction sites are:
SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE
SDB:ATI drivers - openSUSE
I chose the hard way method. I downloaded the driver. Restarted SuSE 11.3 in mode 3. And as SU followed the method above, including adding the zypper programmes (which found some already installed and which installed a whole lot more). When I then attempted to run the install (sh ./atidriver-install-10.8-x86.x86_64.run) and selected automatic mode. It completed 82% and stalled attempting to install "Postprocessing Kernel Module".
I pressed control c to kill the process and attempted to re-install using the manual mode and then using the build mode. In both instances, same outcome. When I rebooted, and entered my password, the desktop did not load but sent me back to the username/password page. I can't get back in. Does not matter as I have backed up my docs.
I decided to install the proprietary driver because the colours on the desktop corrupt after the 2nd boot following a clean install. i.e. on the initial boot the colours are fine. Second, this is the 3rd effort I have made to install the driver after a clean install of SuSE 11.3 and there is no change in outcome. So, my question: anyone any suggestion what is going on and how I can install the driver successfully? Or, do I not understand the new regime in SuSE 11.3 and should I not attempt to install a new driver.

I just installed the ATI Catalyst drivers for my Radeon HD3200, and upon reboot my mouse has disappeared. I can still use it, it's just that there's no pointer on the screen. In addition, moving windows and loading/scrolling any window is very, very slow.I also noticed there's no entry for the mouse in xorg.confI have run aticonfig --intial and aticonfig --initial -f, to no avail.

i'm attempting to know and understand fedora more and i will spend probably the next month pouring through all the forums and documents to answer more of my own questions. but there's quite a bit here, so i'd thought i'd ask some noob questions to get me started a little.
ive installed fedora 14 64bit and chosen only kde as the desktop. i selected an extra 2 repos besides the default, fedora 14 -x86_64 and fedora 14-x86_64 -updates. i believe this kernel is installed: 2.6.35.11-83
1. i can only see the 2 extra repo's as being "checked" in kpackagekit, shouldn't i see the default repo also ?
2. i dont have an applet in the system tray indicating the system is up to date, does fedora have this by default ? also after a clean install i ran yum check-update and yum update but the message sayes: "no packages marked for update". i'm not sure if the system is auto-updated during install or not, but with other distros iv tried there is always atleast a few updates needing to be done after install.
3. is kpackagekit the fedora gui package manager ? i dont see any others.
4. i want to upgrade to nvidia drivers, but i think i am missing a non-free repo or something. when i enter: yum install kmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686 xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.x86_64 i get messages stating "no package" i get the same message with yum install nvidia-settings.i also tried this: LANG=C yum --enablerepo=rpmfusion-nonfree info akmod-nvidia but it sayes repo not found.

I installed the new 9.12 cat drivers in the usual way (init 3; rpm -e the old drivers; generate new rpm; rpm -i new drivers; init 5), but instead of starting like I expected, I got a blank screen and what appeared to be a hard lock (keyboard lights don't toggle, Ctrl + Alt + Backspace and Ctrl + Alt + F1 don't do anything).
I switched back to radeonhd, but I'd like to get the proprietary drivers working if possible.
The usual listings
Code:
[nathan@ebisu ~] lsmod | grep fgl
fglrx 2323096 0
[nathan@ebisu ~] modprobe -l | grep fgl
extra/fglrx.ko
Looks like the driver loaded OK...
Code:
[nathan@ebisu ~] dmesg | grep fgl

Looks like this has gone walkabout. It used to be in the Education repo and still is but is missing several updates. This repo has also gone missing from wiki pages and from list of community repos in YAST. Seems a bit suspicious as though something has been changed again. Is GRAMPS now in a different repo or is it no longer supported in openSUSE? Is Education repo defunct?
