OpenSUSE Hardware :: Read The Hardware Info From Cd-rom Drive?
Dec 23, 2009
I want to read the hardware info from my cd-rom drive. It's actually a hd-dvd drive, but has no stickers or anything on it. I want to read its flash from the command line. I don't know if the "flash" is exactly what I want to read, but whatever displays its info.. model, serial, that stuff. (final goal being - I want to see if I can flash it to read blu-ray, but I need to figure out what drive it is first!)

I have spent some time in photoshop. And I remember a useful feature in it, where Photoshop can tell you info about the image, by pressing on the properties or something. Photoshop can say what the picture was taken with (mobile / camera) and what date.
I run Ubuntu now is there anyone who knows a program which can do the same for Ubuntu? I can't find anything in GIMP

Somehow, the wife got her laptop into this situation yesterday. The Windows partition booted normally when selected from GRUB but os 11.3 would boot to a command line login and pretty much everything besides CTRL-D was useless as the root partition was ro.
I booted a live CD and found two a couple of strange things. First, the system clock was reset to the default date/time (2007-xx-xx). I reset that. Second, after correcting the time I ran fsck on the root and home partitions. Both went through with no errors reported but the 20GB root partition took a long, long time to complete while the 80GB home partition went pretty quickly. After doing the above, the system booted normally but both partitions reported running the transaction log as well as forcing fsck where I had just done that. My question is for future reference: how does the system react to a grossly incorrect date/time, especially where all the drive data reports being much later than the reported system time? Would this be the reason for what I saw? I have no idea how the wife managed to reset the system clock, even if the

seen this or have suggestions on how to fix this. I can read the original disks but I cannot read the backup. The backup disc was burned on Window$ using Nero.I am trying to read the disc using both VLC and Totem but you can see in /var/log/messages there is an issue with reading the disc. This disc is readable in the Window$ box and on all DVD stand alone players.

Not sure if anyone uses floppy drives anymore much. I know that most machines don't come with them anymore unless you ask for one.One of my machines [Machine # 2] has a floppy and I have never had the occaision to use it under linux [opensuse 11.2 currently]. Until now that is! I have about 30 floppies that I need to transfer the data from. I am able to mount the floppy drive and take data off the currently inserted floppy, but if I want to insert another floppy and remove the data from it, I must unmount and remount the floppy everytime. There is an entry in fstab:
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto,user 0 0
and a mount point in media [/media/floppy] Is there something else I need to have in the fstab line for the floppy so that it will read automatically everytime I insert a disk?

So when I click on delete I get another error message:

I have not changed anything on the stick recently so I dont know what is causing the problem.

I down loaded Debian 5.0.4 and burned it to CD (several times I might add till it was right) and now the computer I'm putting it on wont acknowledge it as a boot disk and load. It does not have a problem with my windows cd, which has a crack and the start of all my problems, But not the Debian CD-1 disk. what now? The computer is an IBM thinkpad a22p. Everything works as far as I can tell. But I was going to reinstall Windows and failed in that because of a small crack on the edge of the disk that stopped the install and any hope of accessing the file on the laptop. Microsoft does not support windows xp any longer, you must buy windows 7, but the ibm will not run it due to processor speed and ram limitations. But it will run linux and I'm willing to try it just to get out of microsoft control.
Idon't know what else to do. This is the link to where I downloaded the software ( [URL] ). The others five that i downloaded were on the same page that I got this one. Are there bad files here? Is there a missing file in the disc?

I bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

Server with 4 disk partitions in an RAID 5 array using md. Yesterday the array failed with two devices showing as faulty. After rebooting from rescue, I was able to force the assembly and start the array and everything looks to be okay as far as the data goes, but when I run:
Code:
mdadm --examine /dev/sda3
I get (truncating to the interesting bits):
Code:
Raid Level : raid5
Raid Devices : 4
Avail Dev Size : 1448195216 (690.55 GiB 741.48 GB)
Array Size : 4344585216 (2071.66 GiB 2224.43 GB)
Used Dev Size : 1448195072 (690.55 GiB 741.48 GB)
Array Slot : 0 (0, 1, 2, failed, 3)
Array State : Uuuu 1 failed
And
Code:
mdadm --detail /dev/md1
yields:
Code:
Array Size : 2172292608 (2071.66 GiB 2224.43 GB)
Used Dev Size : 1448195072 (1381.11 GiB 1482.95 GB)
Raid Devices : 4
Total Devices : 4
Active Devices : 4
Working Devices : 4
Failed Devices : 0
Spare Devices : 0
Additionally, the 'slot' for devices a-d line up like this:
a - 0
b - 1
c - 2
d - 4 (!)
The first number 'Array Size' from examine is twice as big as sit should be based on the output from detail and comparing to twinned server, and why does the 'Array State' and 'Array Slot' from examine indicate there's a 5th device that's not indicated anywhere else?

I have a home network that includes a couple of computers {A, B, C, D}. currently, I have a cron jon that runs every minute and updates (using rsync) the hard drives of computers {B, C, D} with the contents of hard drive {A}. So far everything works great, as hard drive {A} barely has any information on it. Now, I am about to copy a lot of information (about 8 GBs) to hard drive {A}. Naturally, the cron job will run (as it runs every 1-min) and try to 'sync' the contents with hard drives {B, C, D}.
Given my network (100Mbit/sec), there is no way the cron job will be able to 'copy' the contents to hard drives {B, C, D} in one minute. It will take much more time. Does this situation create a problem? meaning, will cron re-run a new rsync instance 1min later, even though an existing rsync process is running and still copying information to hard drives {B,C,D}? Will my backups be hurt / slowed down tremendously because of this?

I have been running Ubuntu 9.04 for the past year. Tonight decided to upgrade to 9.10 thru update manager. Every thing regarding the install seemed fine until the request to restart the computer. I hit the restart and it will not boot up. Computer goes thru the normal restart screens.
Screen flashes with bios info--no hard drive detected, then proceeds to show booting from hd, then loads grub stage 1.5 (not grub 2)and screen goes blank.

I am looking for explanations on how Opensuse utilizes the root directories. Like what decides if a program goes in /bin vs /sbin vs /usr/bin etc...In other words, a breakdown of the directory structure and how each part is utilized. I am trying to get more familiar with it so it will be easier for me to locate things and I will know where to look for X part of a program that does Y.

I've installed quantum GIS on opensuse 11.3 gnome, so far so good. I run the app and it opens fine. To get the app to use data on the HD you get a dialogue box with a browse button. It should just be a case of clicking browse and selecting the required data file. Unfortunately when I click on browse the app crashes. I've no idea how to get info about the crash in an attempt to solve the problem. Had a similar problem with gimp in suse 11 kde could only fix it by updating the os to 11.3.

When I say info, I get an empty document: nfo: (dir)Top, 1 linii --AllWhen I say info -f /usr/share/info/dir, I get the same. When I open /usr/share/info/dir in KWrite, I notice that there are tabulations in the Node: declaration. When I removed these tabulations, the directory suddenly displayed all right (info -f /tmp/dir).So I tried the same thing with the file extracted from the current package, and it contains tabulation characters, so I can see nothing there with info.

I set up a server using ubuntu 9.10, with two hard drives in a hardware Raid 1 setup and with two more drives for recurring backups. The problem is that the two drives for backup are set to read only and won't allow me to change the permissions even when logged in as root. I have tried putting "rw" into the "fstab" file with no luck, I have also tried running "gksudo nautilus" and "fsck -r /dev/sdc" but still have the same message that I don't have the necessary permissions to complete the task.
**I just tried erasing the data on the disk and creating a new partition, the disk utility allowed me to erase the data and create FAT32 partitions with the same permission problems but would not allow an EXT partition or NTFS partition (it would give and error message stating:"Error creating file system: helper exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:mke2fs 1.41.9 (22-Aug-2009)")**
***I fixed the problem by fixing a formating problem in fstab and reformatting the drives to ext4.(the fstab had a problem with the way that I broke up the lines when I input the info for the new drives, and I didn't realize it until I maximized the window in gedit.)***

I have a Coby MP3 player which functions as a USB drive. It has always worked fine, both on Ubuntu Karmic and on the Windows (booted from another disk).
Now, in Ubuntu, it appears as read-only (but it works fine when I boot into Windows on the same machine). How can I deal with this? It's not a matter of my fstab, which I have never manually edited; the USB device is always auto-detected.

Since I started using Linux I've learned that almost anything is possible with a little tweaking, so I was just wondering that if I have a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive on my laptop, is there any way to make it write to a DVD instead of just reading it? I know it's a long shot, but since the drive can write to a CD, I don't see a reason why it couldn't write to a DVD somehow.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on an Armada laptop with a Teac CD-W24E installed. This drive can handle cd, cd-r and cd-rw, however the cd/dvd writer and hence Brasero detects it as read only. So no possibility to write!! Also, when I load a blank disk the cd drive icon disapears from the file browser page . The disk utility program detects the loaded empty disk, but can not format it (read only) With F3b I can write to the drive, but only once (takes up the total disc), no multiple sessions. So where does F3b gets its drive definition from? My question is, is this read only forced by the kernel, or is there a file that i can edit in order to make it read/write and usable by Brasero? I prefer Brasero, because with the latest update it now allows easely multisession while I can stil not achieve it with K3b

I removed my old 160Gb laptop drive to install a new 320Gb drive. The 160Gb drive is partitioned as follows: 20Gb unallocated partition, 115Gb ext3 partition (running ubuntu 10.04), and 5Gb swap.
I placed this drive in a portable enclosure so that I could retrieve data from it. The Disk Utility in Ubuntu recognizes the drive but the partitions are not recognized, shows unknown and the only option available is to format the volume. If I place the drive back into my laptop, the drive boots normally and data is accessible.
I have connected other portable USB drives and they work (NTFS formatted), so USB ports are not the problem.

having repartitioned a disk yesterday but uwisely not obliterating a DOS OEM partition, came down to find the machine had woken up & booted the wrong disk (one I partitioned but without ne OS); with apparently dead (unwilling to seek main drive).
Trouble is the OEM diagnostics was old DOS and likes to **** on other disk partition tables and it seems to have got run, from what was the OEM Windows disk. Now I've fixed that, it seems to be screwed partition table issue.
No problem, it happened before and I recovered with gpart(8) & a spot of tweaking, but due to "redevelopment" I've now got my partition table backups on the disk that's lost. The old backup of them, got tidied. gpart's for once only finding the partitions I don't care about eg) swap & a Windows 7 NTFS backup partition.
Have some logfiles from 11.1 days, which may if it gets recorded somewhere by YaST or other in /var/log actually have the table output. Any one happen to know, where to look as a time saver?
I'd like to get these system partitions back, as I put in bugs on 12.1 M2, as well as an 11.4 and older 11.2 install for comparison. Wasn't planning on re-installing, when I get asked to try something later on.
