OpenSUSE Hardware :: DVD Drive Will Not Read Burned Dual Layer Discs?

Feb 22, 2010

seen this or have suggestions on how to fix this. I can read the original disks but I cannot read the backup. The backup disc was burned on Window$ using Nero.I am trying to read the disc using both VLC and Totem but you can see in /var/log/messages there is an issue with reading the disc. This disc is readable in the Window$ box and on all DVD stand alone players.

Ubuntu Installation :: Won't Read Most Discs?

Dec 9, 2010

I have several old poweredge 2450 servers I bought recently, used. I have made several Ubuntu 8.04 or 8.04.4 server cds. They all hang on the packages.gz file trying to install. I used the check disc function on the 2450s and it can't read the file, it thinks it is corrupt, though it works fine on a more modern computer.have tried several similar computers. I have burned to CD-R and CD-RW. I have burned at 8x (slowest on my drive).I have checked the MD5. I just don't understand why these computers won't read this disc properly. Or several other discs, like SMS server or tiny core. Won't read them either. Oh, but it reads Ubuntu 10.10 server just fine, installs ok, well slowly, but it works.

Hardware :: DVD-RW Drive Not Reading Discs?

Apr 22, 2011

Installed Ubuntu 10.10 this morning from CD, downloaded all the latest updates. But when I put a CD or DVD in the drive, I can't access any of the data. Disk utility recognises that the drive is there, but it says "No medium detected".

Disk utility recognises it at /dev/sr0 so I added a line to fstab

/dev/sr0 /mnt/dvd udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec 0 0

but made no difference

I ran accross someone asking someone with a similar problem to run:

Slackware :: Windows 7/Slackware Dual Boot, Different Discs?

Sep 19, 2010

My new job requires I use Windows and as such I put a second HDD in my laptop for the purposes of Window/Work The issue is that Windows will not install on this second disc (Windows cannot create partition or install to disc). I got around this by installing Windows to the first disc, then the second then putting Slackware back on the first but then I suffer the "Bootmgr cannot be found, press ctrl + alt + delete to restart".

I am using Lilo and I have never really had an issue dual booting them on the same disc (Admittedly over a year ago) but it is of the utmost important I have them on separate Discs. Has anyone encountered this and/or know a way around?

OpenSUSE Network :: Cloning Discs And Networking?

May 26, 2011

I haven't used linux in a long time, and have to install OpenSUSE 11.3 on ten of our servers. What I plan to do is install OpenSUSE and all our required software on one of the servers, and then clone that drive to all the other server drives (the servers are hot swappable). My question is:

What do I need to worry about conflict wise? So far the only conflicts I can see that I will need to address are machine name (hostname) and set unique static IP addresses? How can I change the machine name (ie. server01, server02 ...) and IP address? Is there any other stuff I need to change as well?

We have a 2U file server running windows. All of the servers (1 x Win and 10 x linux) will be connected to a 24 port gigabit switch.

Is there also any special stuff I need to do to allow access to the Windows server (file etc)?

I will also require remote access to the servers, but assume that this will be easy to setup?

As for sleep mode, I assume that's fairly easy to configure through the interface?

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot-up Results In A Read-only Root Drive?

May 20, 2011

Somehow, the wife got her laptop into this situation yesterday. The Windows partition booted normally when selected from GRUB but os 11.3 would boot to a command line login and pretty much everything besides CTRL-D was useless as the root partition was ro.

I booted a live CD and found two a couple of strange things. First, the system clock was reset to the default date/time (2007-xx-xx). I reset that. Second, after correcting the time I ran fsck on the root and home partitions. Both went through with no errors reported but the 20GB root partition took a long, long time to complete while the 80GB home partition went pretty quickly. After doing the above, the system booted normally but both partitions reported running the transaction log as well as forcing fsck where I had just done that. My question is for future reference: how does the system react to a grossly incorrect date/time, especially where all the drive data reports being much later than the reported system time? Would this be the reason for what I saw? I have no idea how the wife managed to reset the system clock, even if the

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Can't Make Floppy Drive Read Disc Automatically

Oct 24, 2010

Not sure if anyone uses floppy drives anymore much. I know that most machines don't come with them anymore unless you ask for one.One of my machines [Machine # 2] has a floppy and I have never had the occaision to use it under linux [opensuse 11.2 currently]. Until now that is! I have about 30 floppies that I need to transfer the data from. I am able to mount the floppy drive and take data off the currently inserted floppy, but if I want to insert another floppy and remove the data from it, I must unmount and remount the floppy everytime. There is an entry in fstab:

/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto,user 0 0

and a mount point in media [/media/floppy] Is there something else I need to have in the fstab line for the floppy so that it will read automatically everytime I insert a disk?

Mar 15, 2010

I have a laptop with a small (dual boot) hard drive. It is a dual boot with Windows XP and Open Suse 11.1. I want to remove Suse Linux but keep the Windows side. I need to keep that Windows drive just the way it is. I have OpenSUSE 11.2 installed in another laptop and want to keep them separate. I don't want to damage the proprietary program on the windows side. My challenge is I do not have aa Windows install CD, I do have the recovery disk that came with the Laptop, but this DOES NOT include the Proprietary program I want to keep. Is there a way to remove Linux from this dual boot drive without erasing Windows?

OpenSUSE Install :: Dual Boot With Backtrack4 - Partition Drive To Make Room For Bt4?

Nov 28, 2010

finally got mostly everything fixed on my opensuse 11.3. 11.3 is my only os on my laptop right now and I want to be able to dual boot with backtrack4. I used to have bt3 but it was on a usb loading up with winxp. Anyway, I've downloaded the iso image and after hours of forum reading I figured out how to mount the iso image. Doing so allows me just to look at the files. Is there an install file somewhere I'm missing?

Also, couldn't ever figure out how to partition my drive to make room for bt4. Tried downloading gparted and failed. Tried using the expert partitioner program that came with this system but it won't allow me to create another partition. Couldn't ever find a reason why. Will bt4 allow me to create a partition upon installation? How do I install?
