OpenSUSE Hardware :: Radeon 4670 Ati Driver - Graphics Card Recommendation?

Mar 13, 2010

I recently bought a HIS HD 4670 IceQ card but can't get it to work in openSUSE 11.2 Under Windows the card works fine, so I assume there is no hardware problem. I tried this card in two computers with different mainboards, but it does not work. Several times I reinstalled openSUSE completely from scratch (tried both 32bit and 64bit versions) but no luck. The problem: Right after the installation it uses the radeonhd driver. This basically works, but without 3D (no Tuxracer...) and even 2D is slow (dragging around windows on the desktop is slow, page scrolling in firefox also).

Then I tried to install the ati proprietary driver, both from rpm (the rpm's from the "official" ati repository have a checksum error, as already mentioned in another thread!), and by downloading the driver from AMD and running the install script. The install script seems to work successfully. The kernel module is compiled and loaded. "aticonfig --initial" makes a rudimentary xorg.conf. But then, when starting X, it does not work:

- on one of the 2 tested systems, even kdm does not start, the screen simply stays black with a frozen cursor top left, even CTRL+ALT+backspace doesn't do anything - on the other system, kdm starts and shows the login screen, but when trying to start KDE kwin crashes, and the windows have no title bar (when I googled for this symptome I found lots of people also having this problem...) - trying to configure the system using sax2 didn't help, even sax2 doesn't display properly I have now spent 4 days trying to get this to work and now I'm really tired of those buggy graphics drivers, be it proprietary or open source...

Can anyone recommend me a graphics card that is approximately as powerful as the radeon 4670 (I bought this card because it is said to be the most economical card (both in price and energy consumption) that allows to play Anno 1404 reasonably well on windows), but is known to work in openSUSE 11.2, even in 3D mode (tuxracer...)?

OpenSUSE Install :: Graphics Card Driver For GMA HD?

Jun 25, 2010

I have unfortunately found myself unable to properly boot up openSUSE because I decided to buy the Acer Aspire with the i5 Processor.

I have the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (GMA HD) graphics card, and unfortunately from all my searching online and on openSUSE, I have been unable to find a driver for this that works for linux, and in addition I don't know how to install a driver outside of a GUI.

My openSUSE boots up to the boot choosing screen (regular openSUSE or failsafe), and then that nice list of functions being done is displayed, but as soon as the daemon has started, suddenly my screen goes blank and I am unable to do anything about it. Beyond this point, my OS loses all functionability, and while I can hear it computing, I am unable to actually tell WHAT it is computing. get a driver for this and to install this driver and get this GUI running, that would be great.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: System Freeze With Radeon Driver + DRI / FireGL V3100 Card?

After a bit of work I got 3d acceleration (direct rendering) working on my system. Now, whenever I use intensive graphics, (certain screen savers, Google Earth overlay animations) all performs fine for a while (1-2 minutes) and then causes a full system freeze. Only solution at that point is a hard power reboot. I don't know where to look for a solution, since I can not check any diagnostic files when the system is frozen.

System:
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz
ATI FireGL V3100 graphics Card

OpenSUSE Install :: Graphics Card Driver / Everything Is Greyed Out (nothing To Be Selected)?

Jun 18, 2009

I recently installed SuSE 11.1 (64 bit) on my system

AMD Phenom II 940 3.0 Ghz;Biostar TA790GX 128M Motherboard with ATI Radeon HD 3300 Graphics card built in;
4 Gb (2*2 sticks) DDR2 800 MHz RAM

The installation went smoothly, But on first restart and login (and subsequent ones too!) I get a light purple screen with a skyblue box at top left corner, with xconsole written on it. when I Left click anywhere on the screen, I get a popdown with a number of options, of which only XTerm (bash shell) and exit (logout) options work. Now I know the HD 3300 graphics card drivers are not built into the SuSE 11.1 distribution, and I have already downloaded them (Linux ones)from ATI website. I login as Superuser, and type init 3 to go to a very basic screen, login as user, change to superuser again and then run the following file i downloaded from ATI:

sh ati-driver-installer-9-4-x86.x86_64.run

The result/output at the command prompt:

Created directory fglrx-install.ubanI5
Verifying archive Integrity... All good.
Uncompressing ATI proprietary linux driver-8.602...
.....(lot of dots)...
ati-driver-installer-9-4-x86.x86_64.run: line 295: ./ati-installer.sh: Permission denied Removing temporary directory: fglrx_install.ubanI5

Once again, i tried everything in superuser login.

Also I tried making changes via sax2 command, it doesnt seem to work. A window opens where I see that my graphics card has been detected but thats about it. nothing else in that option, everything is greyed out (nothing to be selected)

Debian Installation :: Radeon HD 4670 - Display Completely Dark In X

May 22, 2011

I want to get Debian stable working on an iMac 11,2 (previous model):

1/ Same problem as this one, but I solved it by installing the fglrx-driver
2/ New problem: magic mouse and wireless keyboard don't work - solution: install .38-kernel from backports
3/ New problem: fglrx for .38 requires linux-headers.38 requires linux-kbuild.38...

So again stuck with the vesa-driver. I'm quite happy with the wireless mouse and keyboard working, so I'd rather stay with linux-image.38.

Two possibilities:
1/ I get the radeon-driver working
2/ I get the fglrx-driver working

I'd prefer the first method, but as you can see in the log (infra), there's a version mismatch between the kernel and the radeon-module. Any ideas how to get around this?

Using the radeon-driver gives me the following EE's in xorg.0.log.old:
(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed because of a version mismatch.
(EE) RADEON(0): Acceleration initialization failed
(EE) RADEON(0): clock recovery failed
(EE) RADEON(0): channel eq failed
(EE) GLX error: Can not get required symbols.

The las error is also shown as the only error when I use the VESA-driver; so clearly that is not the problem. I have tried without an xorg.conf, and the following xorg.conf won't work either:
Section "Module"
Load "glx"
Load "dri"
EndSection .....
I also tried the radeonhd-driver, but that doesn't change anything.

Debian Hardware :: ATI R7 Graphics Card - Open Source Radeon Or Fglrx Catalyst?

Jul 11, 2014

I've set up this new PC, the graphic card I picked is the ATI R7 260X, pretty good card with lots of core processors, high clock and 2GB memory. I'm now currently using the 14.4 catalyst drive, it works actually alright, though, there are some mishaps with this driver:

First my hdmi screen had scale down, leaving black borders around, even though the catalyst control said the correct native resolution, this turned out to be a underscan that fglrx does and I've finally managed to fix it. Other caveat is that the screen simply won't suspend or turn off( via software), DPMS actually works, forcing it turns the screen blank for some seconds but something does not allow the screen to sleep.

Performance wise it seems pretty good though, everything is pretty smooth, being able to play games maxed out on resolution and ultra settings, though, I still haven't tested out that many games.

The open-source radeon on the other hand, well its open-source, fully xorg and linux compatible, which is a major plus point. It seem it has come a long way, supporting lot of features and providing better performance in some cases.

Before installing Catalyst I had issues with mesa and steam, steam would complain about not finding the 32bit libraries, this is however a steam runtime issue, maybe it could already be fixed.

Ubuntu :: Built On A ASUS P4S800D-E Motherboard And It Has An ATI Radeon 9200 LE Graphics Card

May 23, 2010

I just lost my weekend trying to install Xubuntu 10.04 on my pc I made the ps a while back - its built on a ASUS P4S800D-E motherboard and it has an ATI Radeon 9200 LE graphics card. It has a PS/2 keyboard and mouse, 1Gb of memory and a 160Gb PATA/IDE hard drive (I unplugged the SATA drives) Every time I installed or made a tweak to the config it failed in the same way. It showed its failure by continually repeating the first character typed. Regardless of whether this was the password screen for synaptic or just the first character typed into a terminal. Until the first character was typed the mouse seemed to work ok but then it would stall too

I've tried most things, running Xorg with/without an xorg.conf file, loading the ppa kernel and tweaking loads of bios and grub boot parameters all to no avail. So I think I want a more linux friendly graphics card and I fear I may need a new motherboard. Can someone recommend a replacement graphics card for this motherboard? Can anyone reassure me that my motherboard is ok with linux?

Slackware :: ATI Radeon X700 DRI / ATI Card Configuration/driver?

May 11, 2010

I am setting up a system that I was recently given and am having some problems with the ATI card configuration/driver (I think).

THE SYSTEM

System is P4 3.0Ghz, 1GB RAM, 200GB SATA with new full install of Slackware 13, Fluxbox WM/DE.

Code:
lspci lines:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV410 [Radeon X700 Pro (PCIE)]
01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV410 [Radeon X700 Pro (PCIE)] (Secondary)
I have read a lot of things that seem confusing to me, but I have set it up mostly with info from slackwiki.org, and after reading various threads here at LQ.

I am using an xorg.conf created with Xorg -configure, with the radeon driver and have added the DRI section and enabled options per the above URL.

THE SYMPTOMS

First, X starts and I can run glxgears and get a frame rate of 3100+.

But glxinfo seems incorrect:

Code:
glxinfo |grep -i render
GL_RENDERER: Mesa DRI R300 20060815 x86/MMX/SSE2 TCL
I see no "direct rendering: yes" as seems to be required (am I missing something?).

Most things seem to work such as video playback from DVD and Flash.

At boot the vesa modes do not work and I have to use vga=normal, which is no big problem, although a better framebuffer mode would be nice if possible.

But the first big problem I hit is running Blender. When it starts my screen goes blank with just the mouse cursor visible and moving. To get out of this I can kill X or ctl-alt-Fx to get a new login and kill the blender process. Oddly, I found I can also alt-F2 (Open a Run dialog in Fluxbox) which opens with a running Blender behind it - but any attempt to interact with the blender window reverts to the blank screen with mouse cursor.

I believe this to be due to the lack of DRI mostly because of a similar problem once encountered on another system - but am open to other suggestions.

But I think I need to better understand and configure the drivers for this video card before troubleshooting any applications.

So, I guess my questions would be:

1. Is the radeon driver the best choice for this card?
2. Are there advantages/disadvantages to using the ATI driver instead? (Is there a slackbuild for the proprietary driver?)
3. Can someone point me to any better sources of info for ATI cards/drivers used under Slackware?
