OpenSUSE Hardware :: Nvidia Modules With 4GB RAM?
Jan 28, 2011
My PC is running with 2GB of DDR2 memory installed (one DIMM). But when put 4GBs in (2x2GB, dual channel), strange things start to happen!
I have a GA-MA69G-S3H motherboard, AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ CPU, and openSUSE 11.3 installed (2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop, x86_64).
Symptoms are that X won't start. In /var/log/warn, I see entries like this:
Jan 28 18:55:19 media kernel: [ 8.690297] NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 260.19.21 Thu Nov 4 21:16:27 PDT 2010
Jan 28 18:55:20 media mcelog: failed to prefill DIMM database from DMI data
Jan 28 18:55:20 media kernel: [ 9.463711] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 53, CMDre 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000001 00000001
[Code]....
(I'll see this for various processes, not just xfslogd. But always with the nvidia, uh... is that an interrupt?)

I'm trying to install the nvidia drivers but it is not working.
lspci | grep VGA
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX - nForce GPU] (rev a3)
My xorg.conf looks like this:
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
[code]...
And after that my X is not working. And when i try sudo modprobe nvidia I get this:
FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.26-2-686/nvidia/nvidia.ko): No such device

I downloaded all the nvidia modules from yum repos. Now fedora will not boot. Seems to fail as xwindows starts. How I can undo those modules from the live disk? I've tried removing blacklists from etc/modprobe.d. and the .ko files from /lib/kernel/drivers//. My next alternative is to do what the windows lot do. Backup and re-install.

I have, for days, been trying to get a Fedora 15 server to send audio output to the system monitor, an ASUS VH242H, via HDMI. The video portion works perfectly, allowing me to appreciate GNOME 3 for the first time. Sound, on the other hand, is non-existent.
From many, many threads on this problem, I have at least been able to provide some info which might help resolve this. Unfortunately, I have now read too much and followed too many suggestions to be able to find my way through the morass. So, once again, I built a completely new system to ensure a clean start.
Note also that to simplify things, I disabled the on-board audio in BIOS so only Nvidia has any sound output capability. Initially, 'alsamixer -V all' identifies the card and the chip as being PulseAudio. That would change if I used the <F6> option but I have not done so to keep things 'clean' at this point. The 'Master' is full on (100<>100), so muting is not a problem. Next, I searched for the device from the output of /proc/asound/card0 which would match the monitor.
The one device associated with the monitor_name is eld#3.0:
monitor_present 1
eld_valid 1
monitor_name ASUS VH242H

Both the kernel driver and the kernel modules are not what I think I should have. The kernel driver should be HDA NVidia for starters, no? Running modprobe -l and looking for nvidia returns:
'kernel/drivers /video/nvidia/nvidiafb.ko'and 'extra/nvidia/nvidia.ko' But I have not attempted anything beyond this point because I am just too confused as to what needs to be done and who or what manages these values effectively.

I was trying to install VirtualBox through the YaST > Software Management but it is not working, someone in the forum told me that I have to download the OSE version and do it manual way. Finally I am able to start up VB but not able to use the network connection. Thus I am trying to do this:
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup. I get this error:
[code]...
When I type dmesg, it shows me a bunch of info which I don't know what should look for. When I type modprobe vboxnetflt, I get the error: FATAL: Error inserting vboxnetflt (/lib/modules/2.6.37.1-1.2-default/updates/vboxnetflt.ko): Invalid module format. what should I do in order to get my VB to be able to connect to the internet?

I've been trying to load my pcmcia network card driver "xirc2ps_cs" at startup with no success. I have added "modprobe xirc2ps_cs" to the rc.modules file but it doesn't load at startup. Curiously, though, if I execute rc.modules AFTER the machine has booted it will load the modules just fine. Just not during the boot up process. Thinking that hotstart might have been causing problems I've disabled hotstart (chmod -x) temporarilly to remove it from the picture, but there was no change.

I'm trying to install Pystromo using both the README packed w/ the app, and this guide, both of which start off by instructing you to add a new line to the /etc/modules file.
However, there is no such file on Suse 11.2, at least not in that location. I assume there's a Suse version somewhere else, anyone know what it is?

Tonight I installed ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) on an external usb harddrive with a dvd I burned and I used my older desktop. I disconnected all internal and external drives first so everything had to be put on the usb drive I selected (only option available). I used the option to load extra software, use the entire hard drive, and let the software do it's thing. I basically had no options where to put things and it didn't have much choice.
When I boot the usb drive on my laptop (win 7 64 bit) by telling the bios to boot to it first... I get an error: modprobe: FATAL Could not load /lib/modules 2.6.35-22 generic modules No such file or directory. This message appears twice and then it does boot into ubuntu and seems to work fine. I'm new to this OS so that is an uneducated guess but the things I have done seem to be working. So exactly what is this error referring too? Is there a way to fix the problem or do I just ignore it.

The freeze's on my machine only appears when i monitor the temperature of
the gpu. Normally i use gkrellm to monitor temperatures including the gpu temperature. When i stop gkrellm there a no more freeze's on my system. Then i started nvdock which also monitor the gpu temperature and the freeze's are back. Stopping nvdock make the system working normally. I have done a few reboots now, warm and also cold starts und everything works normal.

I own an ASUS N61JV-X2 notebook PC that has an Intel HD IGP, nVIDIA GeForce GT 325M GPU, and nVIDIA Optimus technology. I am running OpenSUSE 11.4 64 bit with GNOME. I used to be a former Ubuntu user. I used Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat 64 bit. In Ubuntu, it was not recommended that I install the proprietary nVIDIA binary drivers because it would cause me to log into a TTY console upon reboot.
nVIDIA states that they have no plans to support Optimus technology in Linux at any time. Would it be recommended that I install the proprietary nVIDIA binary drivers in OpenSUSE 11.4 64 bit with GNOME? Will I get the same problem as in Ubuntu? How do I do this?

I had it running fine but then needed to do a system re-install and upon installation this time I get a error saying it's is Unable To Build Kernel Module and reffers me to a error log. I have a couple of question regarding the screen blanker on Gnome desktop.I used to use a 1024x768 display with previous openSUSE distribution. With 11.3, I discovered the new "auto-configure" X feature. The default screen mode was 1600x1200, but I changed it to 1280x1024.My gfx board is a Matrox G400 DH. Hardware acceleration is disable because of a missing mga_dri.so (fall back to software rendering).I find some screen blanker modules are using almost all the CPU cycles. Animations are very slow, and it can take long before a keyboard hit or mouse movement makes to leave the blanker.
So the questions:- Is there a way to define another (smaller) screen resolution just for the blanker ?- Who should I try to convince to add mga_dri.so back in Mesa again ?- When the monitor go to sleep (DPMS), the blanker still is running, uselessly consuming CPU times. (I can see that because at the first mouse/kbd event, the monitor wake up and shows the blanker running.) Is there a way to configure the blanker to stop running when the monitor is sleeping ?- There are some modules which load images from HD (not the diaporama which load images in ~/images). But the shown image is always the default built-in one. Where is the blanker trying to load images from ?

I am having some issues compiling kernel modules against the pre-built OpenSUSE kernel. Whenever I compile a module and try to load it, I get something like:
Code:
insmod fs/smbfs/smbfs.ko
insmod: error inserting 'fs/smbfs/smbfs.ko': -1 Invalid module format
It doesn't actually matter what the module is, they all do the same thing. I have tried the above mentioned smbfs, I've also tried:vmware kernel module

I've got a weird problem since the update to 11.4: every time I use a yast module (the problem occurs with all of them), when I've finished (press OK or Cancel), it relaunch the module after the work is done. For example, launch the Package Manager, choice a package to install press OK : it performs the install and then relaunch the Package Manager. If you choose to quit, it will relaunch it... The only way to stop it to kill the process (or killx). The same problem occurs with the terminal version of yast. it's linked to a config file of yast under root or something so? I haven't found such problems reported on the internet.

I've installed SLES 11 SP1 as a VM on my Hyper-V/Win2008R2, HP DL380G6 QuadCore, total 18GB RAM, 4GB assigned to the VM. The installation does not include a gui and everything works as expected. The hv-modules are visible but the systems freezes while I
- backup the system with Symantec BackupExec 2010/RALUS
- run an rsync from my physical P DL360G5
I have to powercyle the VM to reestablish a connection i.e. to CUPS by browser or to open a new session by ssh. Why SLES crashes on hyper-V or what I can do here?

I haven't been able to get a working X11 environment on a Dell PowerEdge 1850. Using YaST without an X11 environment sucks particularly when you are trying to configure Apache. In addition, the Apache configuration files seem to have changed significantly since the last time I configured Apache on a SuSE Linux distribution. Where can I find good documentation on editing suseconfig files to ensure that I get the modules installed that I need for the collaboration tool that I'm installing?

I want to remotely install OpenSUSE on one of my servers. I followed the instructions given at SDB:Remote installation - openSUSE, but it didn't work. (My server reverted back to the already installed system.) I think this has to do with a special kernel module (megaraid_sas) that is necessary for the raid controller. Without this module, the kernel cannot find any disk. Of course, the module is not included in the initrd provided by OpenSUSE. I know how to add files to the initrd, but I have no idea where I have to put the required kernel module and which config file inside the initrd must be modified to make the kernel load the module.

I recently bought a pci multi io card to give my pc 2 parallel ports. For Linux, Moschip supply the source plus makefile and instructions. I ran make as root and got an error message
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop/build/: No such file or directory. So I created a folder called build in /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop but that isn't good enough as I still get an error cannot make target modules. So I assume there must be something in the build folder. So what packages do I have to install to get the correct environment to be able to build the driver? Has anyone done this and can supply the driver for 11.2?

I am trying to connect my samsung mobile to a laptop, with bletooth. In Ubuntu it worked normally. I have installed opensuse 11.3 KDE and tried to connect when KDE bluetooth module gave me an error that my mobile does not support services. I have solved the problem by installing nautilus from official repo and blueman from factory repo and now I can connect to my mobile with blueman and browse the files with nautilus. Is there a known problem with bluetooth and kde or something is wrong with my opensuse?

Basically when I add more than a single 2gb RAM module, my computer starts randomly crashing every half hour or so, the screen freezes with no response. I have tested the RAM with memtest 86+, it only happens when there is more than one module. The system is openSuse 11.2 64bit and it had a single 2gb RAM module when I first installed it, and removing all but this seemingly fixes the issue. The following is the error message I get when the system crashes, It seems to continue messaging after the initial visual lockup.
Jan 11 16:34:50 eddie kernel: [ 3129.580690] SysRq : HELP : loglevel(0-9) reBoot Crash terminate-all-tasks(E) memory-full-oom-kill(F) fGldbg kill-all-tasks(I) thaw-filesystems(J) saK show-backtrace-all-active-cpus(L) show-memory-usage(M) nice-all-RT-tasks(N) powerOff show-registers(P) show-all-timers(Q) unRaw Sync show-task-states(T) Unmount show-blocked-tasks(W) dump-ftrace-buffer(Z)

I don't know what the problem is, but from searching the web it could be a number of problems, the memory is not being allocated correctly or it maybe there's some conflict no between my ATI HD card/driver (latest driver from ATI repo).

I am trying to setup Slacware 13.1 x86_64 to a encrypted partition. I used the README_CRYPT.TXT howto : [URL] At the step when I create an initrd.gz I get this error: Quote: ERROR: No /lib/modules/2.6.33.4-smp kernel modules tree found for kernel "2.6.33.4-smp"
I tried to look into the directory and there was only modules under 2.6.44.3. So I tried to change the command into: Quote: mkinitrd -c -k 2.6.33.4 -m ext3 -f ext3 -r cryptroot -C /dev/sda2
This command was successful, but I don't know if this is alright. I made the changes in lilo.conf, add initrd = initrd.gz. This is all on unencrypted /boot partition. The boot=/dev/sda1 I also set for the unencrypted boot partition. When I boot the system I get a kernel panic:
